J., Kutlu, M., Vollmar, C., Kaufmann, E., Quach, S., Remi, J., Noachtar, S., Staudigl, T. Abstract: Spatial navigation and memory are thought to rely on common neuronal mechanisms, enabling us to travel in physical and mental space. Seminal findings in animal models support this assumption. However, how navigation and memory processes interact in humans is not well understood. Here we tested whether real-world head orientations act as spatial context for memories by investigating their reactivation during wake and sleep. We recorded intracranial electrophysiology in epilepsy patients and scalp EEG in healthy participants while they retrieved real-world head orientations as well as while targeted memory reactivation (TMR) was applied during subsequent non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. We show that head orientation-related signals are reactivated during successful memory retrieval, suggesting that they provide specific memories with spatial information. Moreover, we found that TMR triggered reactivation of prior learned head orientations during sleep. Sleep related memory reactivation was paralleled and predicted by increased power in the SO-spindle range while being accompanied by elevated levels of ripples recorded intracranially from the medial temporal lobe. In conclusion, our results suggest that core features of spatial navigation add contextual spatial information to newly formed memory traces. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.26.525724v1?rss=1 Authors: Griffiths, B. J., Schreiner, T., Schaefer, J., Vollmar, C., Kaufmann, E., Quach, S., Remi, J., Noachtar, S., Staudigl, T. Abstract: Information about heading direction is critical for navigation as it provides the means to orient ourselves in space. However, given that veridical head direction signals require physical rotation of the head and most human neuroimaging experiments depend upon fixing the head in position, little is known about how the human brain is tuned to such heading signals. To address this, we asked fifty-two healthy participants undergoing simultaneous EEG and motion tracking recordings (split into two experiments) and ten patients undergoing simultaneous intracranial EEG and motion tracking recordings to complete a series of orientation tasks in which they made physical head rotations to target positions. We then used a series of forward encoding models and linear mixed-effects models to isolate electrophysiological activity that was specifically tuned to heading direction. We identified a robust posterior central signature that predicts changes in veridical head orientation after regressing out confounds including cuing, visual input and muscular activity. Both source localisation and intracranial analysis implicated the medial temporal lobe as the origin of this effect. Subsequent analyses disentangled head direction signatures from signals relating to head rotation and those reflecting location-specific effects. Together, these results reveal a taxonomy of population-level head direction signals within the human brain that is reminiscent of those reported in the single units of rodents. Every human being has immeasurable value, so we each have the power to create something that brings value to others as well. This week, Ben Vollmar, founder of Flatlands Coffee, joins Dr. Michael Brown, founder of DMB Coaching, in a conversation about finances, flexibility, and having faith in ourselves and others.
It's still a little hard to believe. But on October 8, just a few days ago, a jury in southern Utah found me not guilty on all charges. The next few podcasts will discuss the trial, and its aftermath. But this first episode will focus on what came before: the incredible mobilization of people across the nation and world to fight with us against Smithfield, and for the right to rescue. Almira Tanner is lead organizer of the grassroots animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). She was the one, behind the scenes, ensuring all the trains ran on time – from the disruption of an NFL game on Monday Night Football to managing the theater in St. George where supporters gathered to watch the trial. Curtis Vollmar is the grassroots lead for Compassionate Bay, a 501(c)(4) organization that has pushed some of the most groundbreaking legislation in animal rights history, including a nearly-successful effort to impose a moratorium on new factory farms. Curtis was the activist who, in July 2022, was charged with disorderly conduct for merely leafleting in Beaver County, Utah regarding the Smithfield trial. His case, and the death threats against animal rights activists, were the basis for our successful effort to move the Smithfield trial from Beaver to Washington County. Finally, Paul Darwin Picklesimer was my co-defendant in the Smithfield trial, and a lead investigator in the DxE Open Rescue Network. Among other things, Paul is also responsible for the design aesthetic of DxE. You'll hear all the work these folks did behind the scenes to make sure that the story of the Smithfield trial reached, not just the mainstream media, but became a powerful narrative in communities across the nation. How did we do it? What were the impacts? What were our mistakes? You'll hear it all on this episode – and also how you played a crucial role, too. Not every movie is worth finishing, and not everything we start is worth continuing. This week, college dropout turned entrepreneur Ben Vollmar joins Dr. Michael Brown in a conversation about values, commitments, and mindset.
Visit Bushel online: https://bushelpowered.com/ Today's episode takes a peak inside one of the hottest agtech companies to come along in recent years: Bushel. I've known about Bushel for a couple of years now, and originally just understood them to be a company that was digitizing scale tickets, which is actually how they started. Scale tickets, for those of you who don't know, are the paper receipt that accompanies a load of an agricultural commodity that usually includes how much was delivered to where, what the grade factors were, etc. It's really important because historically this is what is used to get paid properly, to keep effective records, and to have a paper trail for bankers, etc. Then this year they raised a $47M series B round and acquired long time farm management software company FarmLogs, and it became clear that I needed to get them on the show to explain all of these pieces and how they fit together. Joining me is Bushel co-founder and CEO Jake Joraanstad as well as Jesse Vollmar, who was the cofounder and CEO of FarmLogs and now is the VP of Farm Strategy at Bushel after the acquisition. We discuss why a company that is focused on supply chain would get into the farm management software business, what is digital infrastructure and how it makes money, why they don't see blockchain as the answer for this digital infrastructure, and how they might use the data they're collecting to provide unprecedented insights back to their customers. Bushel has some pretty impressive feathers in their cap: they've raised a total of around $75M now, much of it from corporate venture capital arms of large grain companies such as Cargill, Scoular, The Andersons, and Continental Grain (which I actually think is more of an investor and holding company than a grain company nowadays, but we'll count them anyway). Even more impressive is that Bushel boasts 60,000 active users on its platform, which is used at 2,000 grain buying locations throughout the US and Canada. They reach 40% of grain origination in the US and handle $22 billion of grain contracts each year.
This week we talk to two agtech founders - Jake Joraanstad, the CEO and co-founder of Bushel, and Jesse Vollmar, the CEO and co-founder of FarmLogs - about the recent news of Bushel acquiring Farmlogs. Bushel is an independently owned software company and leading provider of software technology solutions for growers, grain buyers, ag retailers, protein producers and food companies. FarmLogs is an agtech startup that provides farm management software designed to help run a more efficient, more profitable farm. Jake and Jesse talk through the recent news, their businesses, and how they plan to integrate and grow together. They also offer some spicy takes during our quick takes segment. Don't miss this one! Hey folks! This will be the last episode of the JDO Show for a few months. I'm moving soon, so Rob and I will live closer to each other, and we're cooking up something a little different. I very well might scrub this thing clean. I like starting fresh. So think of this as (kind of) the last episode of "THE JDO SHOW", and I look forward to seeing you in the future. We go over In the Dark Places of Wisdom, about Parmenides, mystery traditions, Apollo worship, and how mysticism in the West got erased by Plato. The audio is a little off at the beginning, but I put a compressor on it, and it should sound pretty okay. Enjoy!
This graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell came out between 1989 and 1998, 100 years after the Jack the Ripper murders it's based on. We look at the meticulous research they put into this to try to understand how this story manages to be about true crime while indulging in deep themes like English identity, psychogeography, and the nature of time. In this episode, Rob and I discuss John Zerzan's Twilight of the Machines. The description on Powell's reads: "The mentor of the green anarchist and neo-primitive movements is back with his first book in six years, confronting civilization, mass society, and modernity and technoculture—both the history of its developing crisis and the possibilities for its human and humane solutions. As John Zerzan writes, 'These dire times may yet reveal invigorating new vistas of thought and action. When everything is at stake, all must be confronted and superseded. At this moment, there is the distinct possibility of doing just that.'" Rob and I discuss the history of civilization as put forth in the book, primal anarchism, static language vs. language of becoming, symbolism, depression, immediacy, and whether or not art is inherently bad. We also discuss how to apply the ideas presented in this book. How do we begin to tear off the Band-Aid that is our modern lives?
This week I'm talking to the WLT book review and online editor Rob Vollmar about Pentti Linkola's Can Life Prevail? A celebrity in his native Finland, Linkola is a traditional fisherman and essayist known for his radical environmentalism. We look at the deep questions of his most important work, which asks some...uncomfortable questions. Is this a work of genocidal ecofascism, and is there anything that can be pulled from it?
