South American cane toads were brought to Australia in 1935 to help eradicate native beetles that were destroying sugar cane crops. The toads didn't care much for the beetles, but they did spread across the coast of Queensland and beyond, with no natural predators to stop them. Their own deadly toxin devastated local reptiles along the way, and they now number over 200 million.Invasive biologists have long tried to curb Australia's cane toad population. The newest approach uses CRISPR gene-editing technology to create cannibalistic “Peter Pan” cane toad tadpoles: tadpoles that don't fully mature and instead feast on the tens of thousands of eggs that the toads produce.How was this approach developed, and how do these researchers think about making a potentially massive change to the ecosystem? Biologist Rick Shine, who has led the effort, joins Host Flora Lichtman to discuss it. Elon Musk set off a grenade in conservative circles this week, trashing the one big, beautiful bill Trump has staked so much on. He didn't just throw shade — he called it a “disgusting abomination,” backed Rand Paul's $5 trillion deficit claim, and waved the American flag emoji as punctuation. This wasn't a random tweet. This was Musk choosing to detonate right as Speaker Mike Johnson is working the Senate hard to shepherd this bill into law. Johnson, for his part, did respond, claiming he had a 20-minute phone call with Musk where the topic never came up. But c'mon — that silence says a lot. Either Johnson's not telling the whole story, or Musk baited him. Neither looks great.The timing is brutal. Musk has been a reliable MAGA ally — hosting DeSantis's launch, reshaping Twitter into a free speech battleground, becoming a key donor and message amplifier. When he turns on your signature policy, it signals open season. And it's not just personal. Elon hates the EV credit phase-outs in the bill. He's furious about the AI regulatory overrides that strip individual from states like California. And his businesses, from SpaceX to Starlink, all have reasons to be wary of the bill's broader tech oversight. So what looked like a united conservative front just fractured — and it fractured loudly. This is the part of the process where fights get public. And loud. Say what you will about the process — yes, it's clunky, yes, it can be exclusionary — but nobody works harder at retail politics than Iowans. I've been in diners, VFW halls, and school gyms across that state. These are folks who grill candidates, push policy details, and actually pay attention. Compare that to South Carolina, which Biden bumped to the front of the line for the Democratic primary. That move was clearly strategic — to avoid an early embarrassment — but it came at a cost. The engagement just isn't the same. You can walk into a bar in Manchester and get into a policy debate with a random guy sipping Busch Light. That's not happening in Columbia.Now, there's a window to fix it. With 2024 settled, both parties could realign the primary calendar — and they should. Let Iowa go first. Let New Hampshire follow. Put South Carolina third, Nevada fourth. Let people earn it. The current process is dominated by consultants who don't want surprises. But surprises are good. They shake things up. They reveal flaws. They test candidates in real-time, not just in sanitized TV town halls. If you want to know who can campaign in a blizzard, let 'em face a real one. Bring back the vetting. Bring back the grit.Deal Deadlines and Tiers of ImportanceThen there's the global chessboard. June marks the end of the 90-day tariff pause Trump announced on Liberation Day — his dramatic trade reset. That pause gave negotiators time to cut new deals, to defuse tensions. But with just weeks left, where are the deals? Trump hasn't sealed anything. Not with China. Not with India. Not with Vietnam, or Mexico, or even Taiwan. Instead, he's hosting white paper summits and showing off 2017 flashbacks. The branding is tight, but the substance is lagging.Look at the scoreboard. Ukraine was inching toward peace talks — then dropped a drone strike that disabled a third of Russia's bomber fleet. That doesn't scream “diplomatic breakthrough.” Gaza? The American-backed aid initiative is collapsing under mutual mistrust and unconfirmed shootings. We're left trying to guess which footage is real and which claims are propaganda. And while all this plays out, the trade environment remains stuck. Japan, South Korea, Australia — they're locked into frameworks that don't need rewriting. The real action would be a comprehensive tariff reset with Mexico or Vietnam, or a groundbreaking semiconductor pact with Taiwan. But so far, we're getting press releases, not treaties.So here's how I see it. You've got three tiers of trade potential. Tier 1: countries that matter symbolically — Canada, UK, the Netherlands. Deals here look good but don't move markets. Tier 2: mid-size powerhouses like South Korea, Japan, and Germany. All three matter for automotives, while South Korea and Japan both matter for their tech sectors. Finally, Tier 3 is where it counts: China, Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan, India. If Trump can close one deal there, he regains the upper hand. If he can't, he enters the summer with big talk and no wins — just in time for Senate Democrats to go on offense. When journalist Cheng Lei was detained by Chinese state security agents, she thought would be freed within the week. Now I, and I'm sure I murdered that name Rosemary, so please forgive me, but it was gonna have 88 turbines in about 450 megawatts of capacity, enough to power about a quarter million homes in Australia and tied with, it's about 300 construction jobs and 10 permanent positions to make that wind farm go. But there's was like a two month public consultation period that happened. And during that consultation period, about 80 per 90% of the local residents, and when I say local residents are about 150 local residents, uh, replied back and were concerned about some of the, the known people that are gonna be there because it's gonna like double the population, right. And 300 construction workers in a, an area of 140 people, 150 people. Uh, and based on [00:02:00] that boom, perhaps the, the project was canceled. What is happening in Queensland that we need to understand that projects just kinda get wiped away like that with 140 people, 150 people chiding in.  Rosemary Barnes: So what's happened is that the Queensland government, the Queensland State Government, it was labor for quite a while and they had, uh, renewables targets and net zero targets and stuff like that. And then, um, the government changed last year, so now there's a, a liberal government, which means conservative in Australia. They're in power and they wanted to change their planning regulations. But what is a bit weird is that they wanna do it retroactively. So they've changed the rules in April, and now they're going through projects that have already been approved to see if they meet the new rules rather than the rules at the time that they were approved. But the weirdest thing is that I'm pretty sure that this specific wind farm that they revoked, they were the ones to approve it shortly after [00:03:00] they came into government. They approved this wind farm and then they changed the rules a few months later, and then they did a new round of community consultation. Um. And they say that 85% of local residents were, um, you know, in favor of reassessing. The issue is that now we're at this stage of the energy transition where, you know, we're up over 40% renewables across Australia. Um, that's primarily wind and solar.

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHWe're in Sydney, Australia. Biocyte Pharmaceuticals. This Einstein looking mother goose shoots himself in the wrist with this gun that has some sort of drug in it. Apparently he created a bioweapon for Biocyte called Chimera but also created the cure for it. And he needs to get it into the right hands.  Next thing you know, he's on a plane sitting next to Ethan Hunt. He's the right hands. The plane experiences some cabin pressure loss, so the masks come down. Ethan stands up to take a look at whats up. People with the masks on start dropping like flies. Turns out, it's not really Ethan Hunt. It's a dude in the mask. Son of a gun got me again! There's a group of baddies who take the briefcase that Einstein had in his hands. They kill him and jump out of the plane before it crashes.Next thing you know, we're with Ethan Hunt, the real one. and he's just rock climbing, free solo style. It's nuts. Suddenly, this bag with glasses appear and he's given his mission - find this women named Nyah who apparently is the ex of Ambrose, the head of the guys from the plane. They think she'll be able to help get the briefcase back seeing as how she's also a profession thief. Ethan finds Nyah at this party trying to pick a lock for a necklace. Ethan tries to warn Nyah that the lock is protected by a fool proof alarm, but she ignores him. They are surrounded by armed guards. Thanks to Ethan's cover, he helps her escape, but she's not interested in working with him. Ethan chases Nyah in his car and he saves her life when car skids and falls over the cliff edge. They then have special time and she agrees to help him. Ethan then meets mission commander Swanbeck who reveals that Einstein had sent a video message to Ethan, while Ethan was out climbing. Now he's dead. And that's why you don't go on vacation. Apparently Ambrose was ordered by Swanbeck to impersonate Ethan Hunt since that who Einstein trusted but then he went rouge. Ethan's mission is to find this briefcase with the drug in it and bring it back.Nyah is not happy to learn that she has been recruited because she was Ambrose's ex-girlfriend but she agrees to help. Ethan get a team together. Luther is back and then we meet Billy, an australian helicopter pilot. Nyah sets up a time to meet with Ambrose. He sends someone to bring her to him which she's okay with because she knows that Ethan is tracking her and will keep her safe. One of Ambrose's associates, Hugh, suggests that Nyah's timing is a big suspcious, so he cuts off the tip of his pinky. Ambrose makes a memory card with information on Chimera and brings it to the race track to show to John McCloy, the CEO of Biocyte. Ethan sees Ambrose showing the contents of the memory card to McCloy on a camera. Nyah is able to get that card and gives it to Ethan. The card confirms that the drug is deadly. She gets back to Ambrose and she sneaks the card back into his pocket, which he notices but plays it cool. McCloy gets into his limo which has been taken by the IMF and they pump it full of this gas.  When he wakes up, he's  in a fake hospital room and is greeted by the ghost of Einstein. He tells him he's been infected with Chimera. McCloy admits that he ordered Chimera to be developed as a bio-weapon to sell for big bucks. Obviously, it's actually just Ethan in a mask and he now has all the information he needs. Nyah meets up with Ethan and they talk about the plan and we find out that it's not actually Ethan, rather it's Ambrose in a mask. So many masks, so little time. Ambrose decides he's going to use Nyah as bait to get Ethan to show up. Ethan and his team work on a plan to break into Biocyte and destory the remaining Chimera samples. Ethan enters the building from the roof, cuz it's Mission Impossible. He gets into the labs and begins to get rid of the remaining samples. Ther'es one left when he is suddenly ambused by Ambrose and his team. Ethan isn't worried about it until he finds out that Ambrose brought Nyah. He sends her over to grab the last gun of Chimera.. Nyah injects the virus into her body, giving her 20 hours to live and ensuring that Ambrose won't kill her. Ethan escapes but promising to save her. Ambrose releases Nyah on the streets of Sydney to spread the virus. Why? Because he meets back up with McCloy with a vile of the virus. He says he doesn't wants his money, he wants stock because as the Chimera outbreak grows, BioCyte will make a ton of money since they already have the anti-virus. McCloy isn't thrilled with this plan but there's not much he can do. Suddenly, there's a knock on the door. It's an explosive thrown by Ethan. Ambrose tells his baddies to go kill him, including Hugh. Ethan and Hugh get into a big fight. He is able to put an Ethan mask onto Hugh and put a Hugh mask on himself. Ambrose them killed the fake Ethan. But when Ambrose see's fake Ethan's finger, he realizes what he's done. While Ambrose was distracted by this, the real Ethan takes the vials containing the virus and the antidote and runs to the helicopter waiting for him outside. Ambrose catches up with him first which leads to a bit of a chase with Ethan on a motorcycle, riding it through fire and what not. Ultimately, it leads to a fight between Ambrose and Ethan and Ethan is able to kill him in one of the more ridiculous ways you could imagine. They tracked Nyah down and brought her to Ethan and Luther injects her with the anti-virus! Commander Swanbeck reminds Ethan he was supposed to bring back a sample of the Chimera virus and he's like sorry. Nyah's record is wiped clean and Ethan ends the movie by meeting up with her and kissing big ones cuz everything is just a Hallmark movie in disguise, some might say a mask.
