Shane MacGowan lived his life as an outsider. He was an Irishman living in England, a troublemaking jug-eared punk with rotten teeth and a voracious appetite for drugs and alcohol. And with his band, The Pogues, he created a powerful synthesis of the traditional music of his homeland and a modern punk attitude. It was this gift for melding the sacred with the profane that led to the creation of one of the finest and most unique Christmas songs ever: "Fairytale of New York." This week, Jaci and Chelsey debate your hottest Christmas takes, because the holiday is approaching fast and there is so much to discuss. You sent in everything from whether strangers — or even straight-up enemies — should be welcomed into festive gatherings for the sake of holiday cheer, to whether wish lists are turning gift-giving into a consumerist chore instead of something magical. With plenty more cozy controversy sprinkled in, this episode is all about questioning the traditions we've accepted and deciding what actually makes the season feel meaningful.// WHAT WE ARE WEARING/MENTIONING // https://shopmy.us/shop/whatwesaidpodcast SHOP OUR MERCH: https://shop.dearmedia.com/collections/what-we-said !!! There's a lot to celebrate this time of year—the food, the fun, the family time—but Dr. Tony Evans redirects our attention to the real reason for the season, encouraging us to make sure Christ doesn't get lost in the celebration.
Christmas decorations are meant to be cheerful — but some have been anything but. Over the years, certain holiday decorations have turned out to be creepy, hazardous, and even deadly. This episode begins with some of the strangest and most dangerous examples. https://www.epa.gov/radtown/radioactivity-antiques?utm Many classic Christmas songs have surprising backstories. Brenda Lee was only 13 when she recorded Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was tossed in the trash before becoming a holiday staple. Music journalist Annie Zaleski joins me to share these and many other stories. She is author of This Is Christmas, Song by Song: The Stories Behind 100 Holiday Hits (https://amzn.to/3ZomPBn). There's a lot of myth and speculation surrounding The Twelve Days of Christmas. We take a closer look at where the song came from, what it was really about, and how much all those gifts would actually cost if you bought them today. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/12-facts-about-12-days-christmas-180967569/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Jared is fired up in NYC for Ticked Off Tuesday, venting about TikTok warriors telling him to “stay out of politics” after an RFK Jr pull-up rant, uninvited life-coach replies to a simple “I'll be 60 when my kids graduate” thread, health scolds comparing a Pura Vida tuna sandwich to two Big Macs, and strangers who jinx an empty middle seat before the plane door even closes. Then he dives into listener complaints: a December birthday dictator who holds friendships hostage over a group dinner, baby gifts that are somehow dry-clean only, Reddit poisoning how people hear their favorite podcasts, and a sister-in-law who wants guests to split the cost of the Christmas roast. It's one big, cathartic gripe-fest with plenty of laughs.Jared is on tour!

Long before Dickens penned A Christmas Carol, our ancestors gathered around midwinter fires to tell tales of spirits and monsters lurking in the darkness. Tonight, we explore why Christmas and ghost stories have been intertwined for thousands of years — then share true accounts that prove the tradition is very much alive. #HolidayHorrorsIN THIS EPISODE: Earlier this month I shared some true reports of people seeing Kris Kringle – or what appeared to be Kris Kringle – in real life. But there are many more of those strange sightings to share! (More Real Santa Sightings) *** Christmas has been celebrated for centuries, and gift-giving has been around in America since well before the Civil War. But how we celebrate and what we give changes depending on the time. We'll take a look at what Christmas was like for American pioneers in the 1800s. (Christmas in The Old West) *** At a Christmas party the revelers heard a horrifying scream from outside. They rushed out to hear the screams were coming from the sky, at least above the rooftops. But how could that be? It was then that they learned Oliver Lerch had disappeared – never to be seen again. (The Christmas Disappearance of Oliver Lerch) *** Nothing says Christmas like a poisonous weed! Well… you explain mistletoe! We'll look at why we're supposed to kiss under this deadly plant during the holidays. (A Kiss Under the Mistletoe) *** A horrible fire breaks out at an Oklahoma school during the holidays of 1924 – and the ghosts of the children still linger at the site. (Ghosts of the Babbs Switch School Christmas Fire) *** You might be celebrating Christmas like a viking and not even realize it. From the holiday ham to the evergreen in your living room, we'll look at how the pagan celebration of Yule influenced modern Christmas traditions. (How To Celebrate Christmas Like a Viking) *** Kids in America anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus bounding down the chimney with gifts and candy for the good little boys and girls. But that's America. What comes down the chimney of Irish and Scottish kids may not be so jolly, plump, and loving. Some Gaelic children have to watch out for the Bodach. (Beware the Bodach at Christmas) *** It's something we're trying to revive here on Weird Darkness… the lost tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas. Many are angry with President Trump’s reaction to the murder of Hollywood actor and film maker Rob Reiner and his wife. Stigall takes a page from Reiner’s hit film “A Few Good Men” to discuss this further. Meanwhile, protecting the homeland is one of his chief responsibilities, and on that front he’s kicking butt. Border enforcement, deportations, drug boats, and foiled terror plots are among the many wins racked up just these last few months of his first year in office. But the economy still looms large, so Vice President Vance is hitting the trail to tackle the message today as gas prices continue to fall and people are still spending record amounts for Christmas. Steve Moore joins to explore the economic story. And a new family film hits theaters in a couple of days “David” by Angel Studios. Rian Johnson's new Knives Out film, 'Wake Up Dead Man,' is sparking conversations few mainstream movies ever touch — faith, forgiveness, power and what it actually means to follow Jesus in a polarized world. In this episode, we talk with the filmmaker about growing up in the Church, walking away from faith and why Christ's teachings — especially “love your enemy” — still shape the stories he wants to tell. Johnson opens up about wrestling with the us-versus-them mentality, the corrupting pull of power and influence, and why he wanted to portray Christian belief with empathy rather than caricature.Plus, the RELEVANT crew debates the best Christmas movie of all time in a chaotic bracket showdown, reacts to surprising year-end culture stories and discusses new research suggesting adolescence doesn't actually end until age 32.HIGHLIGHTS:01:40 – Why 'Wake Up Dead Man' Feels Like a Gospel Story04:00 – Serving vs. Fighting: Faith and the Culture War06:45 – Why Culture Is More Open to Spiritual Conversations09:20 – Is Wake Up Dead Man the Best Knives Out Movie?12:10 – Is Rian Johnson Done With Faith?13:10 – Christianity vs. Church Culture20:15 – RELEVANT Buzz22:00 – Forrest Frank Breaks Into Google's “Hum to Search” List26:30 – Theo Von and Morgan Wallen's Bible Study Revealed32:00 – Rian Johnson on Growing Up Evangelical34:00 – “Arms Wide Open vs. Fists Up” Faith Explained39:00 — SLICES39:20 – New Research Says Adolescence Lasts Until Age 3245:15 – AI Reality TV Is Here (Unfortunately)47:30 – Christmas Movie Bracket ChallengeAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We meet Sabrina, a writer who penned a glowing piece about the books. As a result, she's chosen to ghostwrite a memoir and is put up at the Grand Fairbanks Hotel in the legendary Cordelia Suite — a very big deal. She meets Grayson Westcott, the man who hired her. She'll be interviewing him about his life as an art broker and writing his memoir, but she only has until Christmas Eve to gather everything she needs. One night, while working late, Sabrina craves a sandwich. She calls down to the bar, runs in, and starts eating the first sandwich she sees — which turns out to belong to Ian, who's sitting nearby. He doesn't mind at all and clearly wants to keep talking, but the bar is closing. Maybe another time. The next day, Sabrina continues interviewing Grayson and learns that he was once Hazel Holly's butler at this very hotel. He's hesitant to talk about that part of his life, but when he opens up, she's completely captivated.Later, she runs into Ian again and they grab coffee. He tells her he works for a charity and that it's his first time in the city. What Sabrina doesn't know is that he actually works for the royal family — something he's keeping very quiet. After overhearing a conversation at dinner, she mistakenly assumes he is royalty. Could he be Lord Braxton? She keeps her suspicions to herself as they continue spending time together and sparks fly.Ian suddenly has to leave town to make sure Lord Braxton doesn't marry a woman he just met. They reunite at the Christmas ball, where they dance and share a magical evening — until Ian notices Lord Braxton leaving early and has to follow him. He does return for a kiss first, though. Sabrina is both smitten and increasingly frustrated by how Ian disappears without warning. For various reasons, Sabrina never quite asks him outright if he's Lord Braxton, and Ian never tells her that he works for the royal family. When she joins him at a charity event, she's having a great time — until she spots a jewelry box in his bag. Lord Braxton is known for proposing quickly… is Ian about to propose to her?During a dinner date, Sabrina finally admits she thinks he's Lord Braxton — but before Ian can explain, he's called away again. After hearing more of Grayson's story, Sabrina decides to end things before Ian can break her heart. Grayson is baffled and basically says, “How on earth did you get that from my story?!”Sabrina attends a gala and finally learns the truth: Ian is not Lord Braxton. Overwhelmed, she storms out. After more conversations with Grayson, he encourages her to rethink everything.Speaking of Grayson, Sabrina reunites him with his long-lost love, Charlotte — who is Lady Braxton. Grayson insists he's too old for love, but Sabrina shuts that down immediately. They rush to see each other, and it's beautiful.Sabrina races to find Ian, but she's told he's already left for the airport — except he hasn't. He stayed because he's fallen for her. He gives her the jewelry box, revealing not an engagement ring, but a snowflake necklace. They talk things through, make up, and he tells her he's moving to the States to expand the charity. They kiss — big ones. The movie ends with Grayson and Lady Braxton getting married. At their wedding, we see that Ian and Sabrina are engaged. She talks with Grayson more and he encoruages her to think about things a bit more. Speaking of Grayson, she ends up finding Grayson his long lost love charlotte. she's lady braxton. he's like oh i know that, but i'm too old for this ish. She's like NO! You're never too old for love. They rush down to see each other and it's wonderful. And Sabrina rushes to find Ian. But she's too late. He's already left for the airport. Except, HE NEVER LEFT! He says he's fallen for her and then he gives her the jewlery box...it's not an engagement ring at all. It's a snowflake necklace. they talk and make up. he tells her he's moving there to bring the charity to the states. and they kiss big ones! The movie ends with Grayson and Lady Braxton getting married. Moving into a new home right before Christmas should have felt hopeful—a fresh start, a safe space, a place finally designed for her needs. But by the end of the first night, it was already clear the house had plans of its own. What began as a single cry—a baby in a hallway where no children lived—grew into laughter, voices, and heavy footsteps in an empty attic. Police found nothing. Her own family dismissed it… until they heard the same things themselves. Then came the physical encounters. A shove in the shower. Doors held closed by an unseen grip. Sudden blasts of freezing air where no draft existed. And warnings delivered through a seven-year-old child who calmly insisted, “They said you're in danger.” This wasn't just a haunting. It was a residency dispute. And she's no longer sure she's the one who lives there. #hauntedhouse #trueghoststory #paranormalencounter #haunting #poltergeist #ghostvoices #supernaturalstory #realhaunting #creepyhome #unexplainedphenomena Love real ghost stories? Christmas can be a season filled with beauty and hope, yet for many, it also highlights grief, loss, and emotional heaviness. As this devotional reminds us, celebrations don’t look the same every year—some seasons overflow with joy, while others are marked by sorrow. Still, Scripture assures us that God meets us tenderly in our pain. He is Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23), and He invites us to cast every anxiety on Him because He genuinely cares (1 Peter 5:7). Even when our hearts feel heavy, we can find lasting joy in the truth that Christ came to rescue us, redeem us, and bring the hope of eternal life. Joy may not always look like outward cheer, but it is a steady confidence anchored in the presence and love of Jesus. Main Takeaways You’ll learn why Christmas can feel emotionally heavy for many, especially those navigating grief or change. Discover how remembering Christ’s presence—Immanuel—helps restore hope in difficult seasons. Understand the biblical call to cast all anxieties on the Lord, trusting His deep care for us. Reflect on how worship can become a source of comfort even when joy feels distant. Be encouraged that lasting joy is rooted not in circumstances, but in Christ’s unchanging love and promise of eternal life. Over the Christmas of 1716, during a time of political tension and uncertainty in England, strange events began to trouble Epworth Rectory. After nightfall, the home of Reverend Samuel Wesley was disturbed by unexplained sounds. Soft footsteps thumped in hallways, as dull thuds knocked on the walls and door latches rattled in their housings. The Wesley family spoke cautiously of a presence they called Old Jeffrey, an unseen force that seemed intent on making itself known. Whether trick, imagination, or something darker, the disturbances unsettled the household for only a short time, but held a potential influence that would be felt centuries later, through the beliefs of the son, John Wesley, who would later go on to be a founding member of the Methodist church.
