What does decolonizing design mean to you? How can designers learn from and value the knowledge that comes out of localized contexts? In this podcast episode Christian Zöllner and Ramon Tejada - Professor for Graphic Design at RISD - engage in a conversation about the urgent need to question the euro-centric design canon, making space for other voices, and the potentials of slowing down design education altogether. #decolonizedesign #learnability #designeducation Ramon is a (New Yorkino / Afro-Caribbean / American) designer (as Estudio Ramon) and educator based in Providence, Rhode Island. Dug and long time friend Ray Amico get Real On... The state of the touring industry during such crazy COVID-19 times. What the future holds and what's next. They then get a little into some philosophy on how to reimagine the industry and beyond! Ray Amico is a multi-faceted musician/composer/producer/studio engineer for over 30 years, known as the guitar player in the legendary NY Bizarre-Core band, SIX AND VIOLENCE as well as a veteran Tour Manager, Production Manager, FOH Sound Engineer, and Tour Accountant. BIOGRAPHY Born in Brooklyn, N.Y in the late '60s, Ray started out in the early 80's first as a musician, then as a producer and studio engineer. Ray worked for several years in various NYC studios, as an engineer for A&M Records, working on projects for artists such as Celine Dion, Taylor Dayne, Mariah Carey, Cheap Trick, Norman Bates & The Showerheads and many, many others. From the mid-'80s through the late 2000s, Ray was best known as the guitarist for the NY Bizarre-Core Band, SIX AND VIOLENCE, who were known on the scene for their radically strange music and stage shows, which drew notice from Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL, who loved the band so much that he played flute on two songs for their 1989 debut album, “Lettuce Prey”; the same year that JETHRO TULL controversially won the Grammy for “Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Recording”. After several years in the studio, Ray found that several of the artists that he had been working with started asking him to go on the road with them, doing their FOH Live sound, as well as taking care of responsibilities as Tour Manager / Production Manager, with the skills that could cover all of the different types of things that happen on the road. Over the last 25+ years, Ray had been on the road almost constantly, working with artists internationally, at every possible level. Ray has toured with a wide diversity of artists over the years, in multiple positions, from Toni Braxton to John Fogerty, George Lopez, Dane Cook, Smash Mouth, Ke$ha, DEVO, Fiona Apple, Sublime With Rome, The Cult, Jane's Addiction, 2 Skinnee J's, Jimmy Cliff, Zucchero, Panic! At The Disco, Dream Theater, “Weird Al” Yankovic, System Of A Down, Nancy Sinatra, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Eric Johnson, Chic with Nile Rodgers, Beastie Boys, Sinead O'Connor, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Jim Gaffigan, as well as many, many others. As of March 2020, Ray was on a Central, South & North American tour with the Italian artist Eros Ramazzotti when the international Coronavirus Pandemic struck, ending that and seemingly every other tour and event, for the undetermined future. After moving to Rome, Italy in 2004 Ray released his first solo album as TYRANASSAURUS RAY, called “The Never-Ending Battle Of Fear”, a compilation of Ray's demos and recordings from all over the world. While living in Rome, Ray was introduced by a mutual friend to Eddie Zengeni, who along with Ray has a deep love, knowledge, and fascination with Mob-related films such as “The Godfather” and “GoodFellas”, as well as a passion for all types of music. While working for years as Tour & Production Manager for the band DEVO, Ray met his future wife Michelle, who was DEVO's secretary at their MUTATO MUZIKA STUDIOS in LA. After moving back to the states, Ray married his loving wife Michelle in 2009 and adopted both of her children, Michael and Matthew. In 2016 Eddie Zengeni approached Ray with a project: Eddie was writing, producing, and starring in his own independent street-gangster film set in Rome, Italy called “UNREDEEMED”, and asked Ray if he would write and record the entire soundtrack and score for the film. Ray asked one of his closest friends, keyboardist/producer Michael Klooster of the band SMASH MOUTH to be his co-musical director of the film and for the two of them to collaborate on the entire soundtrack and score of the film, consisting of a wide variety of styles, and accompanied by the talented Josh Mighell on drums/percussion. Along with contributions on various songs from a variety of friends, the talented singer Fiona Apple also supplied inspiration as an Associate Producer of the film. Ray has a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from CUNY Queens College and is extremely passionate about the loves of his life: his wife Michelle, his NY Mets, his puppy dogs, and music. "finding that courage and self love to be able to get myself out of the relationship. And it almost felt like me detaching from a whole identity. And so I felt like pulling away from this individual that I was so connected to for years. It felt like there was so many pieces of me that was so intertwined with that person's identity that I didn't know what was him, or what was me, and I had to redefine who I was. That took some time, I had to hit rock bottom which is not a bad thing I was talking to a few people and I tell them all the time, hitting rock bottom is the best thing because there's only one way up, and that is up." We’re fortunate to have a close friend and advisor of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez as our guest for this episode. Andrés Bernal’s optimistic and expansive point of view is contagious and inspiring. Explaining the source of his optimism in this terrifying time, Andrés says he is influenced by historical struggles for justice: the Black struggle, from abolition to the civil rights movement and beyond, the struggle of indigenous communities, and the liberation movements of colonized nations. In seemingly impossible situations, against all odds, people persevered. What emerged are the most beautiful examples of solidarity. Andrés was a philosophy major, with concern for deconstructing knowledge, questioning what we know and how we know we know it. Perhaps this explains the direction his life has taken. Whether his boundless curiosity is innate or epistemological, his passion for humanity is palpable. He believes that cynicism is the fastest way to destruction and the antidote is a genuine search for knowledge. He has managed to combine his disciplined pursuit of greater understanding with a belief that we can build a society of abundance that’s grounded in human creativity and based in a caring economy. In this interview he has the same reasoned enthusiasm when explaining the Green New Deal, a federal job guarantee, or public banks. Andrés relates the story of his long friendship with AOC and how her political evolution coincided with his developing understanding of Modern Monetary Theory, which he shared with her. This magical confluence has had history-altering consequences; she is a major reason MMT has broken through the surface, and the ripples have not yet been stilled. She put the job guarantee on her platform and told a reporter that MMT should be part of the national discussion. She challenged the accepted wisdom that there’s a natural rate of unemployment, below which society will collapse, or face some calamitous fate. The chairman of the Federal Reserve was forced to agree with her, publicly. This interview covers enough wonky material to satisfy regular fans of Macro N Cheese. But Andrés also inspires us to unleash our imagination, reconsider the nature of work, and plan for a future that meets all our needs. Andrés Bernal is Lecturer of Urban Studies at CUNY Queens College, Doctoral student in Public & Urban Policy at The New School, and policy advisor, political organizer and Green New Deal scholar. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/opinion-green-new-deal-cost_n_5c0042b2e4b027f1097bda5b Andrés-Bernal.com @andresintheory on Twitter

Playing for Team Human today and closing out this season of the show; author and New York Times and Wired contributor Clive Thompson. Clive is a keen observer of human beings and the way different media and technological environments change how we see ourselves and our purpose. His latest book, Coders: The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World, looks at the ways coders are engaged in not only programing our technologies, but programming our reality. In this free-form Team Human conversation, Douglas and Clive discuss the embedded logic behind the codes that shape our society– looking all the way back to Torah, and then on to contemporary platforms. What values are being coded into our everyday experience? Is there still space for that very human, weird, and eclectic expressions of technology we once celebrated at the dawn of the internet?Rushkoff and Thompson bring both a critical eye and sense of hope to the project of writing human virtue and value back into the programming that shapes our experience of the world.Douglas opens with a monologue on the significance of language, specifically the machine metaphors, that also shape our understanding of reality. What do we lose when we think of human persons as as objects, “human resources,” inputs and outputs? Is there something more to being human than just being a producer in a system?Team Human will be taking a much needed break. We’ll still be working, just at a more human pace. Playing for Team Human today: activist, professor, podcast producer, journalist, and musician Chenjerai Kumanyika. Chenjerai joins Douglas in the basement Media Squat at CUNY Queens College for a conversation about why studying history matters more than ever as we fight for a just future. Chenjerai also shares a bit of his own unique personal history; how he went from working in an emergency room to a touring as an international hip hop artist, to his most recent work as an activist/journalist and now, college professor at Rutgers University. Drawing from these diverse contexts, Chenjerai helps us understand media and activism in a time of renewed racism and repression. A spirit of deep conviction and empathy animates Chenjerai’s work and shines through in this conversation with Douglas.Check out Chenjerai’s Peabody Award winning podcast, Uncivil, from GimletListen to Things I've Seen featured in today’s show, from Chenjerai’s group The Spooks."You won't believe the things I've seenFar beyond your wildest dreamsI've seen chaos and order reign supremeI've seen the beauty of the universe so peaceful and sereneIn seconds turn to violence and screams"A clip from Chenjerai's recent lecture at Penn State is featured in this episode. What happens when our past becomes indelibly fixed in the online databases that shape our digital identities? Is there ever escape from the internet’s permanent memory for our blemishes and increasingly public misfortunes? Sarah Lageson studies the serious social ramifications and new forms of “digital punishment” meted out by the growth of online crime data. On today’s episode she discusses this topic, the focus of her forthcoming book, Digital Punishment - Uses and Abuses of Criminal Records in the Big Data Age. Her work looks at the way bias and errors in the criminal justice system become embedded within these digital records and how this is exploited by private data brokers. Lageson and Rushkoff then turn to the very human question of how we should treat each other in a society where every mistake or brush with the law becomes glued to our digital identity. At the very least, it’s a future where we’re going to have to cut each other a little slack.Guest Bio:Sarah is an Assistant Professor at the Rutgers University-Newark School of Criminal Justice. She studies public access to criminal justice data, error in criminal record databases, and associated issues with punishment, Constitutional rights, and inequality. Sarah’s current research examines the growth of online crime data that remains publicly available, creating new forms of “digital punishment.” Learn more about Sarah at sarahlageson.comDouglas opens the show with a monologue about the gamification of social good on Wall Street. Can the market actually be coaxed into rewarding social good over exploitation? Or are funds such as the new ETF “JUST capital” a mere ploy to make investors feel good while exacerbating the problem of inequality?Today’s show was produced in the Laboratory for Digital Humanism at CUNY Queens College. Dave Macholz is the Academic Chair of the Automotive Technology program at Suffolk County Community College, the largest Community College in the State of New York. Dave began his career as a Technician at the age of fifteen and worked as a tech while pursuing a degree at CUNY Queens College. After College Dave owned and operated his own shop and continued to work as a Technician until being hired as a full-time High School Automotive Teacher at Eastern Suffolk BOCES in Oakdale NY. Dave served as the lead instructor for the AYES Automotive program at ES BOCES for several years before leaving to take a position as a full time Instructor at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, NY where he currently Chairs the Fiat Chrysler MOPAR CAP Local, General Motors ASEP, Honda PACT, Subaru U, Toyota T-TEN, and general automotive programs. Dave is an instructor and program consultant for Worlpac where he teaches and manages a team of Asian market vehicle technical trainers. In addition to his instructional background, Dave writes technical articles for Motor Age Magazine, serves on several industry and publishing company advisory boards and is an advocate for continuing automotive education for working automotive professionals. Talking points: Dave grew up in his grandfather’s shop. Suffolk County Community College on Long Island, New York is in its 30 th Year. There are over 6,000 registered shops on Long Island. How do we Improve enrollment in automotive technology college or automotive post-secondary schools? Need to first communicate the need for techs which starts in schools Middle school, high school, BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational; Services in New York provides school districts with shared skilled trades courses) It starts with parents. If the parent’s perception that the automotive industry isn’t the right path for their child, then students never consider it as a career. Students starting their career in the automotive. Initial pay is lower than most careers, $12/hr, required to have own tools. This needs to change. The Industry needs to start with a pay progression process along with pay scale that follows that progression. Too many students are not doing challenging work after two years and they lose interest in their chosen career. We must take on this task to challenge our future techs. Mentors are necessary to help students into their new career. Key for the student to become successful. Shops needs to commit to cost in training. Mentoring is a skill and needs to be learned. Most senior person in the shop is not necessarily the best choice for being a Mentor. There will be a charge involved in mentoring young people. The shop must come to that realization. Rethink automotive industry. From training, certifications, and continuing education. New business models may be considered. With technology changing in cars you need a next level technician. Internships First semester- vet skills Second semester in the first year- 80 hours spring semester, 400 hours over summer, 80-160 fall semester, graduation about 100% of interns are working. 60% dealerships, 40% independent shops. Post-secondary must follow up with industry to verify students career pathing and learn about any changes to the program to better prepare and keep student employed. Capital budgets for public college and the need for improvement. 70-80% is faculty salary and benefits. Need to get creative for funding- grants, donations. Facility upgrades need to be considered because of the demand of the industry. The need of industry is so great which is sparking interest from colleges to help fill industry’s employment needs. That is what community colleges do. Grants are important to find funding. In-kind donations are also important for his program. Key to funding is involvement from industry. Future of
Playing for Team Human is Brian Hughes. Brian is a recent graduate of the Media Studies Graduate Program at CUNY Queens College, home to Team Human and the Laboratory for Digital Humanism. Hughes’s work explores media origins and portrayals of extremism. On today’s episode, Hughes begins by sharing his research on Arab Nationalism as related to media technologies from global broadcast to networked communications. Using his recent MA thesis as the springboard, Hughes and Rushkoff take a deep look at nationalist and extremist affinities that have surfaced both at home and abroad. How do hypertext, memes, and even magick fit into this story? Tune in to find out.Read Brian Hughes’s MA thesis linked in the abstract below and at queenscollege.media:“The 20th Century witnessed several opportunities to unify the Arab peoples as a political and identitarian bloc. None of these attempts, however, resulted in a lasting pan-Arab nationalism. Brian Hughes‘s thesis, Communications Technologies and the End of Arab Nationalism, argues that the nationalist paradigm was at odds with those communications technologies available to spread the 20th Century Arab nationalist message. This mismatch has had dire and lasting consequences into the new millennium, including the rise of violent jihadist ideologies such as those of Al Qaeda and the Islamic State.”More of Brian’s work can be found at the following links:http://qc-cuny.academia.edu/BrianHughesOn CNN:http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/16/opinions/how-to-fix-the-fake-news-problem-hughes/http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/24/opinions/social-media-false-narratives-hughes/ Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
