In this 2022 discussion, editor and writer James Aquilone joined Word Balloon to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kolchak: The Night Stalker — the cult-classic TV franchise that helped define the modern supernatural investigator genre. Aquilone talked about the enduring influence of Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak, from The Night Stalker's 1972 TV movie origins through its single-season series and lasting impact on shows like The X-Files.The conversation also covered Aquilone's work curating and editing the Moonstone Books graphic novel anthology, a Kickstarter-backed project that united top writers and artists to tell new Kolchak stories spanning five decades of the character's career — from classic newspaper-era mysteries to modern paranormal cases. He discussed collaborating with Moonstone's long-time Kolchak publisher, coordinating contributions from creators across genres, and ensuring the stories captured the tone and noir-horror style of the original show. Aquilone reflected on Kolchak's place in pop culture history, the challenge of blending nostalgia with fresh storytelling, and how the 50th anniversary served as both a tribute to Jeff Rice's original creation and a reintroduction of the Night Stalker to new generations of fans.
Liz LongleyTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Nashville based artist Liz Longley. In this episode, Liz and I chat about her being born & raised in Pennsylvania, not far from where Taylor grew up, and how there MUST be something in the water in that area! Then we get into some of the reasons behind her attending; as well as some of the thigs that she learned at The Berkley School of Music. We touch very briefly on her similarly brief NYC residence, before she packed her guitar and her song book, and headed for the much more apt Nashville. Of course, I get her to explain a musical concept that I only recently learned about, and it turns out that it is her favorite musicology term! Then we talk about her music. Liz has released SEVEN albums! I pepper her with questions about some of my favorites of her work, and the meaning behind them. Naturally, I ask her about her two Kickstarter campaigns. In 2012, Liz launched a Kickstarter campaign designed to help her finance a studio album. By the end of the campaign, she has raised 157% of her goal. The resulting record that she made, landed her a record deal with Sugar Hill Records! We discuss a bit of her time at that record company, and how her exit from it transpired. Sadly, when she left the record company, they had received & shelved her latest album. So, she turned once again, to her backers at Kickstarter. Her 2020 Kickstarter campaign had a goal to raise enough funds to PURCHASE the finished album from the record company. The campaign met the stated goal in the first 24 hours and went on to raise 333% of the financial goal; making that one of the biggest musician campaigns ever funded on the platform. She used the extra funds to create TWO more records! Liz was a blast to chat with, and she even let me play two of her songs that I absolutely love. PLUS, we get together to come up with an amazing offer for the listeners of this episode. Liz will send every listener a FREE CD EP (just pay shipping)! Click the link below to get that FREE CD! Make sure you follow her on all of the social medias, and check her website for tour dates near you. At the time of this recording, Liz was about 8.75 months pregnant with her second child. That baby was born less than 2 weeks ago! Congratulations Liz and welcome Connor to the world!Link to FREE CD (Just pay shipping)B) FSH Sales Page #1 — Liz Longley

Yancey Strickler is a writer and entrepreneur that co-founded Kickstarter (and was CEO for 3 years), Metalabel, The Creative Independent, and A-Corp (Artist Corporations). Essentially, each of these ventures exist to equip creative people with capabilities, knowledge, and tools that make them more powerful. We cover the different facets of this at length, especially his concept of, and push to create Artist Corporations, the systemic exploitation of artists, how DSPs trade convenience for meaning and depth, platform boycotts, "winning" in it's purest sense, and a whole lot more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Yancey StricklerA-CorpsMetaLabelThe Creative IndependentHipgnosisNirvanaThe Royal Alberta AdvantageEp 68 - Evan Honer“All The King's Men”Virgil AblohBentoismCS Lewis - “The Inner Ring”Click here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Send us a textI swear they are listening to us?Who is “They”? You now, “Them”! On Season 3 Episode 16 of You Heard It Here Last, Christina and I talked about the fact that somebody at EN World really loved Deathstalker.I just found out that by the time you hear this episode Deathstalker will once again be in movie theaters. That's right they are remaking the campy Conan rip-off, and it looks like they are doing it the proper way…with another “B” Movie version. But that's not what this one is about. In our episode I said that if we were going to have a Roger Corman TTRPG it should have been Death Race 2000 and look what EN World did. They have written another 2 part piece about Death Race 2000 as a TTRPG. https://www.enworld.org/threads/where%E2%80%99s-the-death-race-2000-roleplaying-game-part-one.715287/Mike, I know you are not a big “B” Movie fan like Christina and I, but I can't help but feel like we are starting to see some throwback themes in roll playing to the 80's and even 70's. The 80's makes sense with Stranger Things, but what's your take on roleplaying games starting to mine our childhoods for inspiration?[Kick to Mike]Since I've got Mike here, we might as well dive into his favorite genre.Cyberpunk Legends: Into the Night is a solo or cooperative card game set in the world of R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk. It's an officially licensed game and just premiered on Kickstarter…and it blew past it's funding goal in 19 minutes.https://www.rascal.news/cyberpunk-legends-hacks-the-system-500k-raised-in-under-a-day/At the time of recording this it is at 3 quarters of a million dollars and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down much.Mike, why do you think Cyberpunk in general is so popular and is this just an example of a game riding the coattails of other games or is it something else?[Kick to Mike]And there you have it…all the news, you've already heard.
