Former adult film actress Devyn Michaels is on trial for the murder and decapitation of Johnathan Willette — the father of her two daughters — while she was legally married to his adult son, Deviere Willette. Prosecutors say the motive was control: that Michaels feared Johnathan's attempts to reconnect with his children and move closer to her home, so she decided to eliminate him permanently. They claim she drove to his Henderson residence in the early morning hours of August 7, 2023, killed him, then tried to dissolve evidence with bleach and ammonia before hiding his belongings in her garage. His head has never been found. The defense tells an entirely different story. They argue that Deviere — not Devyn — had motive and opportunity, and that the physical nature of the crime suggests someone else. They point out that there's no murder weapon, no DNA evidence, and no direct forensic proof tying Devyn to the act itself. Seventy percent of Nevada's population resides inside Clark County. Add 40 million visitors a year and this unit has a great deal of responsibility in both patrol functions and search-and-rescue.With only five aircraft, they flew over 4,000 patrol hours and responded to 91 rescue calls in 2024. It is not unusual to complete a rescue in the snow-covered mountains, respond to a rescue in Lake Mead, and then handle a pursuit, all in the same shift.Our conversation with pilot Blake Farris and tactical flight officer Brad Bear was fascinating. We discuss training, unit dynamics, the mixed fleet of aircraft, mission profiles, and the full time search-and-rescue team located inside the hanger facility.Brad shares an impactful story of working as a patrol officer, where having skilled air crew overhead kept him safe. Dr. Renata Keller is an associate professor of history at the University of Nevada, Reno. She is the author of two books:  Mexico's Cold War: Cuba, the United States, and the Legacy of the Mexican Revolution and, most recently, The Fate of the Americas: The Cuban Missile Crisis and the Hemispheric Cold War. Dr. Keller received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.

In the early hours of Thursday, February 21st, 2008, a six-year-old girl woke to a creaking noise down the hallway outside her bedroom door. It was a blustery night in rural Nevada, so she figured it was just the wind bending frozen tree branches in the yard. But then another creaking noise filled the house, this time even closer to her bedroom. She pulled her covers tight around her and stared out through the crack in the door. An uneasy feeling settled over her as the light in the hallway shifted. She could almost see the outline of a person standing outside her room. She squinted, trying to make out a face, wondering if it was one of her parents checking in on her.
