It was awesome. But in between all that, we hit on something serious. Congress is quietly trying to push through a bill that would sell off 500,000 acres of public land in Utah and Nevada. Not great. We break down what's going on, why it matters to anyone who loves the outdoors, and how to speak up before it's gone for good. Welcome to the sixth episode in a series called “The Failures of Old Earth Creationism.” Many Christians attempt to fit old earth ideology into their beliefs, adopting uniformitarian or evolutionary pieces into their worldview. While this is often done in an effort to appeal to science, it often leads to major issues logically, scientifically, and theologically. The Coconino Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formation famously exposed near the top of Grand Canyon, but it spreads much further, from northern Arizona, northwest Colorado, through Nevada, and Utah. This rock remains locked in geological controversy, as two counterclaims vie for its origin. Those who believe in an old earth claim that the feature was primarily wind-deposited, while others claim that the sandstone was formed by water. Which of these is true, and why is the answer so important? In today’s episode, we’ll take a look at the Coconino Sandstone, examining the claims made from both sides. Join host Renée Dusseau and Dr. Brian Thomas as they discuss this topic on episode 98 of The Creation Podcast. --- Join... More...

What happens when you try to dismantle one of the most common and damaging forces in diabetes care with comedy? Diabetes stigma affects nearly 4 in 5 adults with diabetes. It impacts their mental, physical, and social well-being. Spoonful of Laughter is a national campaign that tackles this stigma head-on—not with lectures, but with laughter. In this episode, guests Brian Fitzgerald of Dancing Fox and Beth Strachan, who collaborated with The diaTribe Foundation to create the campaign, take us behind the scenes of how this unexpected creative approach came to life. We explore why comedy is such a powerful "Trojan horse" for social change, how the campaign broke through entrenched stereotypes, and what nonprofit communicators can learn about designing bold, emotionally resonant campaigns. About the guests Beth: For over three decades, Beth Strachan has been a professional do-gooder working at the crossroads of social justice, environmental protection, and health. Her narrative change work has helped catalyze the nationwide move toward clean energy; integrate arts, culture, and creative expression into our daily lives; and illuminate structural racism as a root cause of inequity. She has helped lead courageous breast cancer survivors on awe-inspiring ascents of Mount Shasta and Mt. Rainier, uniting communities in a powerful movement to prevent the disease. She helped launch the premier traveling film festival spotlighting women's voices in cinema, raising $8 million for nonprofits across North America. With a family motto of "Non Timeo Sed Caveo" (I fear not, but am cautious), she approaches every endeavor with boldness tempered by wisdom, ensuring that progress is both impactful and sustainable. Brian:  Brian Fitzgerald has been a mischief-maker for social change for most of his life. He spent 35 years with Greenpeace doing everything from door-to-door canvassing to going to sea to save whales, stopping a nuclear weapons test in Nevada for four days, and pioneering the organization's adoption of digital activism back when the web was young. Together with Tommy Crawford, he's the founder of Dancing Fox, a creative agency based in Amsterdam and dedicated to beautiful disruption, where he advocates for a more invitational, hope-based form of activism.  Resources: Demystifying Nonprofit Budgets: What Every Leader, Fundraiser, and Marketer Needs to Know: https://brooks.digital/health-nonprofit-digital-marketing/demystifying-nonprofit-budgets/ Contact Brian and Beth Brian: https://www.dancing-fox.comBeth: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bethstrachan/Brian: @brianfit.bsky.socialLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianfit/Insta: @brianfithttps://substack.com/@brianfitBeth: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bethstrachan/https://www.dstigmatize.org/spoonful-of-laughter/The Center for Media & Social Impact's report, How Comedy Works [to Change the World]

The 8 Taxes You Could Pay When Doing a Roth Conversion (Is it worth it?)

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 10:45

In this episode of the Power of Zero Show, host David McKnight looks at every possible tax or cost that may result from a Roth conversion. The first tax you'll have to pay when executing a Roth conversion is federal income tax.  Whatever portion of your IRA you convert to Roth is realized as ordinary income and piled right on top of all your other income. David is an advocate for not converting to Roth unless you think your federal tax rate in retirement is likely to be higher than it is today. The second tax you could end up paying when doing a Roth conversion is state tax. The situation will vary depending on where you live – in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming, you don't have to pay state tax, including on Roth conversion. Do you live in Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi, or Pennsylvania? Then, you'll have to pay state tax, but Roth conversions are exempted. If you're thinking about moving to one of these states to avoid paying these taxes, just know that, while they may not charge income tax on Roth conversions, they do make up for it in other ways (sales and property tax, for example). IRMAA – the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount – is the third cost you could end up paying when doing a Roth conversion. IRMAA represents an additional charge you could be required to pay on your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. The next potential tax you could pay as a result of doing a Roth conversion is Social Security taxation. The fifth cost you could incur because of a Roth conversion is NIIT (Net Investment Income Tax) – also known as the Obamacare surtax. NIIT is a 3.8% surtax on the lesser of your net investment income or the amount of your modified adjusted gross income that exceeds the threshold of $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filing jointly. The sixth tax you could potentially pay as a result of doing a Roth conversion is an indirect one and results from the phase out of certain credits or deductions. The list of credits and deductions includes child tax credits, student loan interest deductions, the saver's credit, and education credits. Underpayment penalties is the seventh tax you could potentially pay by doing a Roth conversion. David explains that many people opt to pay taxes on their Roth conversion in the fourth quarter. The problem, however, lies in the fact that when you pay the taxes on your Roth conversion out of cash in the fourth quarter, the IRS expects you to have paid taxes on that Roth conversion evenly throughout the year. The eighth and final tax you could end up paying as a result of doing a Roth conversion applies to those who are getting health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Does your Roth conversion push you above the subsidy threshold? If so, know that you could have a partial or total loss of subsidies or may have to repay subsidies at tax time. “Think of all of these additional taxes or costs as tradeoffs, not problems or unintended consequences,” says David. For example, you may pay increased Social Security taxation during your Roth conversion period, but will then eliminate Social Security taxation altogether by the time your conversion is complete. If President Trump extends his tax cuts, then the national debt will grow to $62 trillion by 2035. Most experts believe that the only way we can service this massive debt load is to dramatically increase income tax rates. According to a recent Penn Wharton study, if the U.S. doesn't right its fiscal ship by 2040, no combination of raising taxes or reducing spending will prevent the nation's financial collapse. Remember: while it's true that Roth conversions do cause you to pay additional taxes and expenses in the short term, they do dramatically reduce those costs over the balance of your life, once your conversion is complete. News From the Fallout is one of those horror titles that sticks to your heart like tar. It has a lingering fear that seeps deep into you the longer you sit with the book. It's an incredible piece of work from the Writer CHRIS CONDON (THAT TEXAS BLOOD, Ultimate Wolverine), artist JEFFREY ALAN LOVE (The Last Battle at the End of the World, The Thousand Demon Tree), letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and designer Michael Tivey. I was lucky enough to sit down with the writer and artist to have a long discussion about the series that digs into some rather heavy topics about the book. Pre-order it now! In 1962 Nevada, a nuclear bomb test goes horribly awry and unleashes a contaminate into the atmosphere that turns people rotten. Otis Fallows, a private in the U.S. Army who is present for the test and is the only known survivor, flees the secret army base in search of a safe haven—but does such a place exist? Here is an excerpt from my review of the first two issues, which you should pre-order now: I grew up as a child in the 90's, seeing footage or references to nuclear fallout drills in all sorts of media. Watching those children my age crawl under their desks to escape the blast of a nuclear bomb's fallout seemed more like science fiction than something that was a real present threat anyone faced. Nothing catastrophic like that could ever happen in America, right? Well, in 3rd grade, I watched the Twin Towers fall on live television. So those tests didn't seem too far-fetched in my 9-year-old gray matter anymore.  With both the horrors that I witnessed and everything surrounding them, it felt like people's fears were heard loud and clear. They were echoed in everyone's hearts to try to stop them from happening again. There was no doubt that the fallout was inevitable.

This episode was recorded in Reno, Nevada, during the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference. The panel is reviewing a presentation given by Dr. Rick Grant, who was unable to be on the podcast. The presentation was based on the idea that crowding is a subclinical presence. If you manage it with people and resources, a dairy can do very well. But if something happens in that crowded situation, like a disease or heat stress, it can tip performance over the edge. Evaluating time budgets for cows can allow for the identification of places to improve. Beds are vitally important. If a cow doesn't have a bed due to crowding then she's not lying down, chewing her cud, which is what allows her to be as efficient as possible. (3:19)Jason thinks about time budgets as a tool for managing stress. Jim agrees and notes that crowding is part of every cow's day, but we can manage to minimize that time in most instances. Jason and Jim talk about some of their approaches to evaluating crowding when they work with a dairy, and where pain points are often located. (5:57)Jason liked Dr. Grant's takeaway message that the cow doesn't necessarily care she's overcrowded as long as she has a bed she doesn't have to fight for and room at the feed bunk she doesn't have to fight for. He describes a very successful client who is overcrowded, but everything else is managed well. All other stressors have been removed, so the only stressor remaining is the overcrowding. But when additional stressors compound crowding, then dairies experience issues. He adds there is a huge opportunity for error when feeding to slick bunks in an overcrowding situation. (16:15)Jim talks about different measures of efficiency. Is it milk per cow, milk per free stall, milk per parlor stall, or milk per pen? He thinks the real answer is “it depends,” and the answer might be different for each dairy. Jason notes that the bank wants to see assets on a balance sheet, and the cows are the assets. (19:24)The group discusses geographical differences in overcrowding. Jim's observations show crowding increases as one moves east in the US. Tom agrees and notes 20-30% of the available stalls are in his part of the world. Overcrowded cows eat faster, and this impacts rumen efficiency, probably leading to lower de novo fatty acid synthesis and overall lower components. The panel talks about whether or not there is such a thing as an “overcrowding ration.”(20:59)The panel relays some real-world examples of crowding where dairies would cull cows to decrease milk production, but production would remain the same because the cows were now less crowded. They talk more about other management strategies that need to be on point if a dairy is going to overcrowd. (27:50)The panel wraps up with their take-home thoughts for dairy producers and nutritionists. Jim and Jason share their contact information with the audience.
