    2. From Raiders to Rulers: The Danelaw and the Eastern Expansion of the Norse Eleanor Barraclough Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age The discussion highlights the transformation of Vikings from raiders—who famously plundered Paris for 7,000 pounds of gold—to military conquerors. The Great Heathen Army arrived in England around 865, conquering East Anglia, Northumbria, and Mercia. The subsequent stalemate led to an agreement between King Alfred and the Norse leader Guthrum toward the end of the ninth century. This accord established the Danelaw, granting the Norse political and legal control over vast swathes of England, evidenced today by Old Norse influences in place names. The Norse cultural sphere was enormous, characterized by a diaspora that spread east and west. People from what is now Sweden moved down Eurasian waterways, becoming known as the Varangians, or Russ (rowers), and settled Novgorod in 862.

    3. Kievan Rus Assimilation and the Unsolved Mystery of the Salme Ships Eleanor Barraclough Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age In the east, Rurik and his company founded what became Kievan Rus, shifting their power base south from Novgorod (862) to Kiev. Although people of Norse heritage controlled the area initially, they were a minority who mastered cultural assimilation with Slavic groups. Norse names like Ingvar and Helga became Slavicized as Igor and Olga, demonstrating extensive cultural mixing. The text also covers the mystery of the Salme ships in Estonia, recently discovered. These two ship burials, dated around 750 AD and predating Lindisfarne, contained the remains of dozens of high-status individuals from Sweden who died violently, likely on a diplomatic mission. One leader was buried with the king piece of the popular board game Hnefatafl placed in his mouth—an intentional act of storytelling.

In today's episode, Sarah shares an update for the listener seeking high-contrast planner options, with products mentioned including the Marjolein Delhaas Planner from Wms&Co, Rad & Happy, and Passion Planner. Then, she shares a listener's story of ordering the Personal Planner from Sweden -- and being extremely surprised by fees (over 4x the value of the planner!). Following, Sarah gets into the concept of an Analog Fall (or an Analog 2026?) inspired by Julianna Salguero's Keepsake substack post: https://juliannasalguero.substack.com/p/how-to-have-an-analog-fall She adds to Julianna's ideas with several fun analog activities of her own, and also ponders: if we were adding tech back to our lives from scratch, what would we actually choose to partake in? ‘Noisy Neighbors' (Swedish title: ‘Bullret I byn'). A audio documentary in 3 episodes by Mattias Wallenius. For over a decade, noise complaints have shaped the music scene in Stockholm. Many venues have been forced to close down or move due to neighbors being disturbed. ”Noisy neighbors” (Swedish title: ”Bullret i byn”) investigates the relationship between music, sound and city life in the Swedish capital. The series follows Fylkingen, one of the oldest still active organisations for experimental music in the world, as they are being evicted from their venue after almost 40 years. But they are far from alone. A series in three parts, where the sounds of the city, memories and actual noise complaints submitted to the Swedish Environmental Department blend together to create something between a documentary and music in itself. Autism isn't new, but our understanding of it has changed dramatically. It's now recognized as a broad neurodevelopmental spectrum that shapes how millions of people perceive, process, and interact with the world. In this episode, we explore what autism is AND isn't, from its earliest signs in infancy to its deep genetic roots, and why misinformation about it continues to spread. We speak with three remarkable experts leading the field in early detection, genetics, and public education: DR. AMI KLIN, PhD, Director of the Marcus Autism Center at Emory University and a pioneer in early autism research, whose work shows autism can be identified in babies as young as two months old. DR. JOSEPH BUXBAUM, PhD, Director of the Seaver Autism Center at Mount Sinai and a global leader in autism genetics, uncovering hundreds of genes linked to the condition. DR. ANDREA LOVE, immunologist, microbiologist, and founder of ImmunoLogic, known for her clear, evidence-based communication about vaccines, immunity, and autism myths. Together, we discuss: • What autism really is, and how the definitions have evolved • How it develops in infancy (and why early diagnosis can be so critical) • The powerful genetic evidence behind autism • The persistence of vaccine myths, and how misinformation spreads • How technology like eye-tracking can detect autism early • The rise of “profound autism” and what it means for families • The future of genetics-based treatments and therapy Whether you're autistic yourself, a parent navigating a new diagnosis, or simply seeking understanding, we're thrilled to share this extensive, in-depth episode with you. Major Cohort Studies Hviid et al., 2019 – Annals of Internal Medicine A nationwide study of 657,461 Danish children found no increased risk of autism in vaccinated children compared to unvaccinated peers — even among those with risk factors such as a sibling with autism. Ann Intern Med. 2019;170(8):513–520 Madsen et al., 2002 – New England Journal of Medicine In 537,303 Danish children, researchers found no difference in autism rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups, and no relationship with age, timing, or date of vaccination. NEJM. 2002;347:1477–1482 Jain et al., 2015 – Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) A U.S. cohort of 95,727 children — including those with siblings with autism — showed no link between MMR vaccination and autism risk, even in genetically predisposed children. JAMA. 2015;313(15):1534–1540 Madsen et al., 2003 – JAMA A study of 467,450 Danish children found no relationship between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism. JAMA. 2003;290(13):1763–1766 DeStefano et al., 2022 – Vaccine A retrospective cohort of over 500,000 U.S. children with ASD found no increase in adverse events or worsening of autism-related symptoms following vaccination. Vaccine. 2022;40(16):2391–2398 2. Population-Level Epidemiologic Evidence Taylor et al., 1999 – The Lancet One of the earliest large epidemiological studies found autism prevalence was the same in vaccinated and unvaccinated children, and the age of onset was unrelated to the timing of MMR vaccination. Read: Lancet. 1999;353(9169):2026–2029 Institute of Medicine (U.S.) Immunization Safety Review, 2011 A global review of studies from the U.S., Denmark, Sweden, and the U.K. concluded there is no causal relationship between vaccination status and autism, and no plausible biological mechanism linking vaccines (including thimerosal) to ASD. Read: National Academies Press / PubMed 20669467 3. Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Taylor et al., 2014 – Vaccine A comprehensive meta-analysis of 10 studies including over 1.2 million children found no association between vaccination and autism or ASD. Vaccine. 2014;32(29):3623–3629 Maglione et al., 2014 – Pediatrics Review of 67 high-quality studies covering the full U.S. immunization schedule concluded that vaccines are safe, adverse events are rare, and there is no link to autism, type 1 diabetes, or other chronic conditions. Pediatrics. 2014;134(2):325–337 Parker et al., 2004 – Pediatrics Systematic review of 10 primary studies examining thimerosal exposure found no relationship between vaccines and ASD. Authors noted that studies showing an association were methodologically flawed or biased, while robust studies consistently showed safety. Pediatrics. 2004;113(6):1904–1910 Offit & Hackett, 2003 – Clinical Infectious Diseases Review of immunology and epidemiology concluded that claims that vaccines “overwhelm” or “damage” the immune system are not biologically plausible based on how the immune system actually functions. It's Tuesday, October 21st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson                    Xi Jinping fired 9 Chinese military commanders China's communist system is in turmoil, as the defense ministry announces the removal of nine very senior military commanders from duty, including a number two general, He Weidong. Since 2023, the communist leader, Xi Jinping, has administered the removal of dozens of senior officers. These moves signal a factionalism from within the party and the Chinese military. Experts question whether Jinping will survive in his position. This week, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is holding its Fourth Plenary Session where leaders will work out a Five-Year Plan. The outcome of this meeting will reveal Jinping's standing in party politics. Keep in mind: God is in control. Haggai 2:22 says, “The word of the Lord came unto Haggai … I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. … I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.” Pakistani pastor survives murder plot A Pakistani pastor survived a murder attempt in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on the morning of Sunday, September 21, reports Barnabas Aid. Pastor Kamran Naz had been traveling by bus, accompanied by his mother, from his home in Gujranwala to lead a church service in Islamabad when he was attacked by two unidentified gunmen. One bullet wounded the pastor in the right leg. A second bullet narrowly missed his head. The attackers then fled on a motorcycle as some church members who were present swiftly came to the pastor's aid and contacted emergency services. Pastor Kamran had previously notified the police of numerous death threats. He was warned to stop ministering at the church or face the consequences.  Pastor Imran Amanat, leader of the Christian advocacy group LEAD Ministries Pakistan, said, “We will not be intimidated or silenced. We demand that the authorities immediately ensure the protection of Christian leaders and hold the criminals accountable. If the government continues to ignore these threats, it becomes complicit in the persecution.” According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Swedish parents lost custody over kids' required church attendance Certain European nations have now been recognized for their systemic violation of parental rights, especially if the parents happen to be Christian.  Alliance Defending Freedom International is working on a case in Sweden, where parents have lost custody of their children under charges of “religious extremism.” The parents had simply restricted the phone use of their teen children and required attendance at church meetings. After three years of attempts to regain custody, Daniel and Bianca Samson are appealing their case to the European Court of Human Rights. Recently, the High Court has already condemned countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, and Romania for systemic violations in family separation and child welfare cases. Iran threatens Israel Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to social media (X) yesterday, effectively taunting the American government, threatening Israel, and asserting independence for the nation's nuclear program. He asked, “What authority do you, Americans, have to dictate what a country should or shouldn't do if it possesses nuclear industry? What position do you hold in the world? How is it any of America's business whether Iran has nuclear capabilities and nuclear industry or not? .. . The U.S. President boasts that they've bombed and destroyed Iran's nuclear industry. Very well, in your dreams!” Trump urges Putin and Zelenskyy to end the war President Donald Trump is urging Ukraine's leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war on Russia's terms.  He warned Zelenskyy of Russian President Vladimir Putin's threat to “destroy” Ukraine it there is no agreement.  The Financial Times described the meeting as a “shouting match”, with Trump throwing maps in the room, and “cursing all the time.” Japan greenlights Morning After Pill Japan has just approved the abortifacient drug known as the over-the-counter “morning after” pill. Japan also approved the RU-486 abortion kill pill back in April 2023. Japan recorded 686,000 births in 2024. That's down from 762,000 in 2023, and down from 2,000,000 in 1975. Jeremiah 32:35 speaks of this child sacrifice.  “They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination.” Day 21 of U.S. government shutdown The U.S. government shutdown is rounding its 21st day. With 900,000 employees furloughed, the shutdown represents the most severe in American history.  Indeed, 7,850 flights were delayed due to air traffic control staffing shortages on Sunday.  According to TheHill.com, 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA agents are presently working without pay. Housing bubble has burst The housing bubble has burst in multiple cities across the United States. The median house values in Oakland, California and Austin, Texas have dropped by 24% since the peak in 2022. Significant declines have also been reported in New Orleans, San Francisco, Fort Myers, Florida, and Denver, Colorado, reports WolfStreet.com. Gold and silver hit new record highs Metals continued their journey upwards and onwards in Monday's market activity. Gold hit $4,350 per ounce and silver hit $52 and change per ounce, reports Reuters. Trump's Education Dept. funds conservative ideology at colleges The Trump Education Department is offering preferential funding for those universities willing to bend more conservative. Only Vanderbilt, the University of Arizona, and the University of Texas at Austin have embraced to the idea out of the nine universities approached with the proposal, reports Breitbart.  MIT, Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Southern California have all rejected the Trump administration's encouragement to abolish their departments opposed to conservative ideas.  Major jewel heist at Louvre in Paris, France And finally, a team of four thieves broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris over the weekend. They stole priceless jewels dating back to the 19th Century, reports Reuters. Among the stolen items were a tiara and brooch belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, an emerald necklace and a pair of emerald earrings from Empress Marie Louise, Napolean's second wife, and a tiara, a necklace, and single earring from the sapphire set that belonged to Queen Marie-Amelie and Queen Hortense. (Also a brooch known as the "reliquary brooch” was taken). XX https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/advances-in-type-1-diabetes-science-and-tech/ This article is part of “Innovations In: Type 1 Diabetes,” an editorially independent special report that was produced with financial support from Vertex. XX More evidence linking COVID 19 to type 1 diabetes.. but still exactly why is a mystery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an unexpected increase in the number of cases of type 1 diabetes in Sweden, particularly among children under 5 and young adult men. The infection accelerated the onset of diabetes among children between the ages of 5 and 9. The researchers looked at data from a 17-year period on the incidence of type 1 diabetes among all people under the age of 30 in Sweden. In addition, they compared the risk of developing diabetes among 720,000 individuals with positive COVID-19 tests against a control group of 3.5 million people. The findings are published in the journal Diabetologia. The number of diabetes cases increased by 12% in 2021 and 9% in 2022 compared with previous years. In 2023, the number of cases was back to a normal level. Despite this, the researchers cannot distinguish a clear connection between COVID-19 infection and diabetes, except for children between 5 and 9 years old. They had an increased risk of type 1 diabetes about one month after a COVID-19 infection even though their total risk did not increase. "However, it's clear that the COVID-19 vaccine can be ruled out as a cause of the increase in diabetes cases. The recommendation for the age group where we saw the strongest increase was not to get vaccinated. In addition, other studies on adults have shown that vaccination reduces the risk of developing type 1 diabetes after a COVID infection." https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-10-diabetes-young-people-pandemic.html XX A new gene therapy approach aimed at protecting people with type 1 diabetes from developing diabetic kidney disease—a serious and common complication of the condition, has shown promising results in a University of Bristol study. Findings from this new study, published in Molecular Therapy, demonstrated a 64% reduction in a damage indicator for kidney disease, paving the way for a potential new treatment. The study, explored the potential of delivering a protein called VEGF-C directly into kidney cells. Previous studies have shown VEGFC could protect against kidney disease as it helps keep blood vessels in the kidney filter healthy, repairing early signs of diabetes-related kidney damage. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-10-gene-therapy-kidney-disease-diabetes.html XX The FDA has agreed to consider Afrezza inhaled insulin for children and teens. The company said in August that it submitted a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Afrezza in the pediatric population and it's been assigned a decision deadline date of the end of May, 2026. Afrezza first recieved FDA approval for adults (age 18 and up) in June 2014 https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/fda-accepts-application-mannkind-inhaled-insulin-kids/ Update on inhaled insulin for kids.. in the open-label, randomized, phase 3 INHALE-1 clinical trial Afrezza demonstrated safe and effective replacement for rapid-acting meal insulin in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D and demonstrates comparable glycemic control to injected rapid-acting insulin. The INHALE-1 clinical trial assessed the safety and efficacy of Afrezza among children and adolescents with T1D, including a total of 230 patients aged 4 to 17 years. Researchers used basal injected insulin and randomly assigned inhaled insulin or rapid-acting analogue for meals, evaluating the change in hemoglobin A1c levels at 26 weeks. After completing 26 weeks of randomly assigned treatment with either Afrezza or rapid-acting insulin injections combined with basal insulin, participants continued receiving the inhaled insulin until week 52 for an extension phase to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Afrezza with continued use.1,2 https://www.pharmacytimes.com/view/inhaled-insulin-demonstrates-comparable-safety-lung-function-and-efficacy-to-injectable-insulin-in-type-1-diabetes XX Eli Lilly released the results of two new Phase 3 trials of an experimental GLP-1 pill that the company says could become a “foundational treatment” for type 2 diabetes. The Indianapolis-based drugmaker plans to submit global regulatory applications for orforglipron in the treatment of type 2 diabetes next year. The company said it will seek approval of the drug as an obesity medication by the end of 2025. Lilly is trying to build on the success of its Mounjaro/Zepbound franchise by offering patients a pill instead of an injection. But the company is trailing behind rival Novo Nordisk in developing an oral alternative, and data released so far has raised some skepticism among investors. A study released in August showed that orforglipron could help patients lose an average of about 12% of their body weight. Wall Street had been expecting more; Lilly's injectable drug Zepbound produced weight loss of as much as 21%, and Novo Nordisk has achieved 15% weight loss percentages for both oral and injectable versions of its Wegovy medication.   https://www.fiercebiotech.com/biotech/eli-lillys-orforglipron-bests-farxiga-padding-oral-glp-1-case-pair-phase-3-diabetes-wins   XX XX UF Health Cancer Center researchers have found a surprising culprit behind common health problems such as obesity, diabetes and fatty liver disease: silent genetic glitches in the blood system that occur naturally as people age. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, mean that in the future, simple blood tests could be developed to identify people most at risk early on, helping prevent chronic illnesses and cancer through strategies like diet or lifestyle changes. As people age, stem cells in the bone marrow that produce blood cells gradually accumulate mutations in their DNA. Most mutations don't cause any issues, but sometimes blood stem cells with a mutation can start crowding out their peers. Called clonal hematopoiesis, this condition affects about 10% of older people and is associated with an increased risk of blood cancers like leukemia. It's also linked to a higher risk of obesity and diabetes. But the prevailing thinking was that obesity and related conditions promoted blood cell changes, not the other way around. The new study reverses that. The implications could be far-reaching, particularly as obesity has now overtaken smoking as the most significant and preventable risk factor for cancer. The team is studying how the mutations drive disease. Next, they plan to test how drugs like those commonly used to treat diabetes and new popular weight loss drugs might help reverse or prevent diseases caused by blood cell changes. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-10-hidden-blood-mutations-obesity-diabetes.html XX A new ultra rapid insulin continues to move forward. A phase 3 clinical trial of BioChaperone Lispro (liss-pro) conducted in China found it safe and effective compared with Humalog along with a significant reduction of the rise of blood glucose after a test meal.     These results complete and confirm the positive outcomes previously obtained with THDB0206 injection in people with Type 2 Diabetes It combines Adocia's proprietary BioChaperone® technology with insulin lispro, the active ingredient in the standard of care, Humalog® (Eli Lilly).   This innovative formulation acts significantly faster https://pharmatimes.com/news/ultra-rapid-insulin-shows-promise-in-phase-3-trial-for-type-1-diabetes/   Poor blood sugar control in adolescent patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) may be associated with a higher risk of neuropathy in adulthood, according to recent research from the University of Michigan.1 The study included children diagnosed with T1D between 1990-1992 who were recruited into the Cognition and Longitudinal Assessment of Risk Factors over 30 Years cohort study in Australia. Investigators collected HbA1c from medical records, and microvascular complications were assessed through self-reports, clinical screenings, retinal photographs, and urinary albumin-creatinine testing.3   A total of 30 children were recruited from the original cohort with a mean diagnosis age of 2.9 years. After an average of 29.7 years (standard deviation [SD]: 3.9 years), 33% of participants (n = 13) developed neuropathy, 63% (n = 19) developed diabetes-related eye disease, and 10% (n = 3) developed neuropathy.3 Mean HbA1c estimates during adolescence (9% [74.9 mmol/mol]; 95% CI, 8.6-9.3 [70.5-78.1]) were substantially higher than childhood (8.2% [66.1 mmol/mol]; 95% CI, 7.8-8.5 [61.7-69.4]; P

New research from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that your brain interprets certain aromas as taste, activating the same regions as sugar Retronasal smell — odor molecules rising from your mouth during eating — creates flavor, while orthonasal smell (sniffing) detects outside odors Functional MRI scans revealed that the insula, the brain's taste cortex, responds to sweet-associated aromas like vanilla or strawberry as if sugar were present Everyday experiences, such as food tasting bland during a cold, highlight the difference between taste vs. flavor and the role of retronasal airflow Sweet-linked aromas can help reduce added sugar in foods by enhancing perceived sweetness, though they do not change calorie or glucose content

Released senior prisoners could regenerate leadership. He discusses the long-standing conflict between Pakistan and the Taliban/TTP, noting deep mistrust exacerbated by perceived Indian influence. Regarding Ukraine, the potential delivery of long-range Tomahawk missiles, viewed by Putin as escalation, is uncertain due to past US bluffs and domestic supply concerns. 1957 SWEDEN
