Episode #385: Minna Fredriksson, human rights advisor at the Swedish development organization Diakonia, describes her humanitarian work and critiques the humanitarian aid field based on her years of work in Southeast Asia. Fredriksson managed humanitarian efforts in refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border in 2013. This was at the start of the democratic transition, and when donor governments such as the U.S., Sweden, Germany, and Japan were urging refugees to return to Myanmar despite persistent insecurity. She observed firsthand the disconnect between donor timelines and refugee realities. Later, inside Myanmar, Fredriksson found that decades of repression had shaped how people communicated even in safe settings, highlighting the need for culturally-sensitive modes of communication and trust-building. She stresses that aid responses must be trauma-informed, participatory, and led by communities themselves, and offers examples of successful local initiatives. However, she cautions against overromanticizing societies, including traditional societies, noting that all exhibit inequalities and prejudices of some kind or other. “Those need to be addressed,” she says firmly. She also warns of the global trend of aid retrenchment, especially Sweden's shift toward nationalist priorities, which undermines those on-the-ground gains. “It breaks my heart when I hear that people say, ‘It's like the world doesn't care,'” she says. In closing, Fredriksson highlights the damaging effects of information repression inside Myanmar, which she calls a form of “soft violence,” as well as the international marginalization and erasure of Myanmar's crisis. She affirms her commitment to amplifying Myanmar's voices: “The motivation, of course, to continue to talk about Myanmar… and make sure that there is information about what's happening.”

Teddie Dahlin was born in Norway and graduated from Business School in Gothenburg, Sweden with a degree in International Marketing and Economics. Today on Sauna Talk, we welcome a very special guest. Dr. Hans Hägglund. Who is Dr. Hans Hägglund? Hans Hägglund MD, PhD, is a medical doctor and professor at Uppsala University, in Northern Sweden. Professor Hägglund has a strong research back ground in clinical research within medicine. He graduated from Karolinska institute, Sweden and did his post doc at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, USA. Between 2013 and 2018 he served as the director of the Cancer Center at Uppsala University Hospital. Professor Hägglund also had the position as the national cancer coordinator at The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) between 2019-2022. He currently holds a position as a senior consultant at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, which is where we catch up with him for this episode of Sauna Talk. But there is a broader history to be told about the dandy - one that incorporates unknown men from the lower strata of society. The Dandy: A People's History of Sartorial Splendour (Oxford UP, 2025) constitutes the first ever history of those dandies who emanated from the less privileged layers of the populace - the lowly clerks, shop assistants, domestic servants, and labourers who increasingly during the modern age have emerged as style-conscious men about town. Peter Andersson shows that dandyism is far from just an elite phenomenon represented by famous poets and artists. He shows how dandyism as a popular youth subculture grew into an influential cultural movement, from the days of Beau Brummell in the early 19th century to the age of mods in the 1960s. France and Austria will follow Monday, and the United Kingdom Tuesday. Under a decree signed by President Donald Trump last month, international goods that were previously exempt from U.S. tariffs – those valued under $800 – will be subject to import duties from Aug. 29. Letters, books, gifts and small parcels worth less than $100 will continue to be exempt. A trade framework agreed by the U.S. and the European Union last month set a 15% tariff on the vast majority of products shipped from the EU. Marine ecologist, Pia Winberg learned how useful seaweed could be for gut health and wound healing. One day she was conducting research by herself in her lab when she had a terrible accident.Pia was four-years-old when she moved from her native Sweden to Australia.She always loved the beach and the coastline. As an adult, Pia became fascinated with the scientific properties of seaweed after visiting a Sri Lankan prawn farm using seaweed to bolster the health of the surrounding environment.She became a marine ecologist in Wollongong south of Sydney, looking at the unique ways seaweed could help clean the ocean and help people with various ailments.In 2015 Pia set up her own seaweed farm, on the edge of an alcohol distillery in the town of Nowra.One day she was emptying seaweed extract from a tank when a large section of her scalp was torn away from her head by a machine.The accident could've killed her if she'd fainted. Mark Williams is a veteran that has paid his dues over more than two decades on the scene as a DJ and producer. Since the 80s, when he started his career at UK hot spots like the Ministry of Sound and Final Frontier, he has been laying the groundwork for his future success. His production work has also gained him acclaim the world over and he has released a staggering catalogue of quality tracks on some of the most respected techno labels in the world including: Tortured, Dark House, Pure Plastic, Phont, Primate, and Carl Cox's Ultimate Trax imprint, to name a few. In addition to releasing on other labels, Mark also has his own imprints: Artificial Vinyl, Real Sessions, Macumba and Real Vinyl. Mark has also gained worldwide recognition with his skilful and distinctive DJing style. Mixing tribal, tech house and techno on three decks and CDJs, his rocking performances have helped him to develop a strong fan base and facilitated gigs in places like Spain, Turkey, Slovenia, Japan, Brazil, Colombia, Macedonia, and Sweden. His first major tour was in 1998 when Mark was asked to join Carl Cox on his “World Wide Ultimatum Tour.” In 2000, Mark became a resident at a club night called “Damage” in Dublin and later that year he supported Billy Nasty on his “Torture Chamber World Tour.” 2003 found Mark on his first “Ingoma Tour” with Ben Sims which culminated in a now legendary party at the Loft Club, Barcelona, the weekend of Sonar. In 2004, Mark and Ben set out for another tour to promote Mark's debut album, “A Point in Time” on Ingoma. 2005 was another banner year, with Mark playing at clubs, parties and festivals around the world including a set for more than 40,000 people at the Monegros Festival in Spain. 2005 also saw Mark bringing his sound to radio. The “Concept Show” (www.conceptshow.com) is a monthly broadcast that Mark co-hosts with Macedonian DJ Goran Kan. Some of the past guests have been Mark Broom, Paul Mac, Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Oscar Mulero and DJ Bone. From the studio to the DJ booth, Mark Williams is one of the brightest stars in the world of techno and his list of accomplishments is impressive and ever growing. In 2007, Mark has teamed up with Paul Mac to provide a new way of presenting his music using a combination of three turntables, 2 CDJs and a laptop running Ableton. Sou Tai are intending to fuse their customary sounds to create something new and fresh. The addition of Ableton to the standard setup enables the use of custom edits of classics and to be able to drop all manner of surprises into the mix. Mark has also found time to create a masterpiece of an album that expresses all the sides of his musicality. His love for tribal, Detroit techno and house music shines through in his album “You can't hide what you truly feel” (out later this year) for the label Subject Detroit. So far Mark has soared to new heights, with Sou Tai closing the Awakenings party in Holland to outstanding reactions from the crowds.
