[18:00] Battling Toxic Burden, Inflammation, and the Vital Role of Essential Oils in Doorway Care -       Dr. Lieurance introduces the concept of a constant battle between the external and internal environments, highlighting the challenge of managing the body's toxic burden. -       This battle leads to inflammation, a key factor in health shifts. -       The emphasis is on strategies to take care of the body's doorways, particularly the mouth and nasal passages. -       Essential oils are presented as a valuable tool for caring for doorways. -       Dr. Lieurance explains the role of biofilm, a sticky gelatinous material that microbes use to shield themselves from the immune system. Without proper care of the doorways, biofilm in the nasal passages can accumulate particles from the air, potentially leading to bloodstream entry. Breathing becomes a lot easier and effort free. It removed his asthma and eczema problems for years. You also start feeling better. Even without the medications, he is perfectly healthy as his body healed itself. Eliminate things from your diet as this would reduce excess harmful elements from your body. [15:53] Sleep, seed oil, processed foods, and fasting If you sleep properly and at the proper time, you will not just feel better but will also age slower. Replace seed oil with olive oil, butter, or avocado oil. Pro tip: if you go to a restaurant just tell the waiter you and everyone on the table are allergic to seed oil. Processed foods are not what you should be putting in your body. You must remove processed foods from your diet and eat real clean whole food. Fasting is amazing- your sleep hours even count. Healing the gut, bouncing your sugar levels, fat oxidation, and training your body are all achieved by fasting.  Fasting if done right can be a very powerful tool. You give your digestive system a break. [23:15] A twenty-four hours once a week, and why does he do it? The dinner-to-dinner fast helped to increase the time of his fast oxidation. Lengthening the fast and doing a full day fast helps make him feel like superman. Tap into the knowledge of our ancestors and include the new research; studies aren't supposed to overwhelm you. You must incorporate how something makes you feel; if you feel energized with something do it. Start your fasts small and then build up. [30:40] How to overcome a standstill in weight; when you can't seem to lose more weight It depends on what you have been doing to lose weight; was it keto, vegetarian diet, intermittent fasting, and so on? It also depends on the period you have been doing what you have been for losing that weight. Your body gets efficient at breaking down fat and you reach a plateau after a certain time; you need to cycle the carbs back in. This way your body becomes better at breaking fats back again. Easier to switch back to carbs and take in the enzymes. This switching back and forth is an easier way to go about it; you need to create diversity in the gut. Our ancestors would have a diverse line of foods that they consumed. [39:50] Bio-individuality and the elimination method People should remove vegetables but only for some time and they should be added back in gradually. You don't know what is affecting you until you eliminate the suspects; you don't know what anti-nutrients are responding to you. A carnivore diet for a while can help improve your gut. After this has happened which can be between one to three months you start adding plant foods to your diet slowly. This way you get to realize what is affecting you through your gut-healing journey. It Helps identify allergies. But first, you must go on a gradual approach to searching for yourself. [44:00] The glucose monitor (CGM) and the Oura ring Your glucose monitor can pick up the signs and aware you. Oura ring is a tool; HRV drops with eating more plant toxins and vice versa means that a carnivore diet suits you the best. Ray's blood sugar pattern picks up when he wakes up. It drops during his fasting period but picks up gradually. This is because his body is optimal. This is because of having more muscles too. Breathing becomes a lot easier and effort free. It removed his asthma and eczema problems for years. You also start feeling better. [15:53] Sleep, seed oil, processed foods, and fasting If you sleep properly and at the proper time, you will not just feel better but will also age slower. You give your digestive system a break. [23:15] A twenty-four hours once a week, and why does he do it? The dinner-to-dinner fast helped to increase the time of his fast oxidation. Lengthening the fast and doing a full day fast helps make him feel like superman. Tap into the knowledge of our ancestors and include the new research; studies aren't supposed to overwhelm you. You must incorporate how something makes you feel; if you feel energized with something do it. Start your fasts small and then build up. [30:40] How to overcome a standstill in weight; when you can't seem to lose more weight It depends on what you have been doing to lose weight; was it keto, vegetarian diet, intermittent fasting, and so on? It also depends on the period you have been doing what you have been for losing that weight. Your body gets efficient at breaking down fat and you reach a plateau after a certain time; you need to cycle the carbs back in. This way your body becomes better at breaking fats back again. Easier to switch back to carbs and take in the enzymes. This switching back and forth is an easier way to go about it; you need to create diversity in the gut. Our ancestors would have a diverse line of foods that they consumed. [39:50] Bio-individuality and the elimination method People should remove vegetables but only for some time and they should be added back in gradually. Episode Highlights [03:03] Ben's Fitness Story Ben grew up following the standard 'sad, toxic, and process-filled American diet' alongside unhealthy behaviours linked to drugs, alcohol, and video games. At 24, Ben started to read health books. Reading helped change his mindset and take ownership and responsibility for his life and decisions.  He began exercising and eating better. Ben went from 250 pounds at 34% body fat to 170 pounds at 6% body fat.  Ben continues to explore different diets and protocols and keeps up with the research.  [07:16] The Deal with Type II Diabetes Ben's father had Type II diabetes and died from it despite following his healthcare providers' instructions. His father's untimely death prompted Ben to question the ‘conventional approach' to treating diabetes and why many people suffer from the chronic disease. Ben considers this a significant turning point in his transformation journey. He believes that the pain pushed him from hobby to purpose. [10:43] Ben's Book: Keto Flex  Ben has authored four books: Keto Flex, The Perfect Health Booklet, The Intermittent Fasting Cheat Sheet, and The Power of Sleep.  Keto Flex, his flagship book, was written to help people understand what ketosis is, how to apply it, and how to use it as one tool to achieve metabolic flexibility. A study conducted by the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill found that only 12% of the American adult population is metabolically healthy.  [14:47] Get Well, Fix the Cell The human body has an innate intelligence that acts as the world's greatest physician, healer, doctor, chiropractor, and health coach from within. The cell membrane is where this intelligence lies; hence, this is the part that needs care.   Ben explains that removing interferences from bad nutrition, lifestyle, and behaviour, among other things, is one method to promote cell membrane health. [25:21] Insulin Resistance  Ben explains that the body's optimal amount of glucose is about one to two teaspoons or 80 milligrams per deciliter.  Insulin levels spike when the body takes in too much glucose, overworking your receptors. The solution is to reduce carbohydrate intake, practice intermittent fasting, and drop glucose and insulin.  Measure, then double your waistline. If it's more than your height, you probably have metabolic dysregulation. [31:52] Taking Responsibility for your Health Insulin resistance leads to Type II diabetes, leading to many other problems — stroke, heart attack, infections, and kidney failures.  Diabetes and insulin resistance are easy to reverse, but they involve time and effort. Understanding the process and science will make people much more likely to do the work. Epigenetic changes take place over at least six to eight weeks or longer.   There is no need to avoid carbs for years. Instead, try different avenues of healing to get optimal peak healthy states.  [38:33] Counter Regulatory Hormones  Human bodies drop insulin in a fasted state. The body's counter-regulatory hormones increase as you lower insulin. This is the body's innate intelligence to pump the body full of energy for daily functions.  At the same time, when the body is dropping insulin, it burns body fat and produces ketones giving you another fuel source.  Listen to the episode to learn more about how keto works!  [41:58] Metabolic Flexibility Think of intermittent fasting as a muscle that develops over time. It has to be trained to have metabolic flexibility . Hypoglycemic people often feel awful during the fast; instead of burning fat and producing ketones, their brains panic and send intense signals for cravings for sugar and carbs.  Exogenous ketones also help people transition through the phase.  Ben recommends adding ketones in the mix and electrolytes during keto to help transition into the ketosis state.  It gives the body the needed ketones, especially for people who have never experienced a deficit of calories or glucose.  [48:08] Keto Diets   Keto is not a diet. It is a metabolic process. Ketosis is our natural fat-burning state. It has always been around for as long as humans have existed.  Dieting is not the only path to health — there are other tools to use. [51:22] Focus on Cellular Health, Not Just Losing Weight  Do it from a lens of cellular health, not just losing weight. Do not lose weight to get healthy. As you get healthy, you will lose weight. View health in cycles, just like in circadian rhythm. Today we have Dr. Benjamin Bikman on the Keto Kamp Podcast. Dr. Bikman is a biomedical scientist, professor, and expert on insulin resistance. Dr. Benjamin Bikman studies diabetes and obesity, and much of what he focuses on is a seemingly obscure condition called insulin resistance. But it's, in fact, not very obscure at all. Half of all adults in the U.S. have insulin resistance. That means you could have it too, and you don't know it. What is insulin resistance? Why did Dr. Benjamin Bikman devote his career to studying something like this? Well, insulin resistance is essentially two things. First of all, some cells in your body aren't responding very well to the hormone insulin. Second, you have more insulin than you did before, a condition called hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance is at the root of virtually every chronic disease. If we go through the chronic diseases that are killing us today, things like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and certain cancers, what they all have in common is insulin resistance. To varying degrees, insulin resistance is either causing the problem or making it worse. Purchase all 7 challenge recordings! Special pricing: http://www.ketochallengerecordings.com  Who Can You Trust When It Comes To Experts In The Health Space?  If the person we're seeking to learn from uses derogatory language when speaking about those with whom they disagree, that is the sign of a petty person. Experts should have discussions politely and respectfully and acknowledge that there is room for disagreement. There ought to be a degree of skepticism that we apply to every authority. We should challenge that authority to some degree. There are people with Ph.D. degrees who we shouldn't trust. Overall, we should always be on our own journey to understand what is accurate and true.  A Basic Understanding of Ketosis  Ketosis is the state where blood ketones are elevated, but pH is normal. Every human has some amount of ketones, even if it's below the detection level on commonly used devices. When you're in ketosis, you will have a detectable level of ketones on a moderately used device and yet pH is not changing. Ketones have the potential to make the body more acidic. When someone's in ketosis, the amount of hydrogens coming off the ketone is relatively modest. Within the blood, there are numerous buffering mechanisms. That way, your body will defend its pH range. Overall, ketones are fat-burning products; when insulin is low, the body will burn fat at a high rate.  Ketones Are Energetic Molecules; Plus, Ketones Are Signaling Molecules Ketones are energetic molecules roughly similar to the calories you get from glucose. Plus, ketones are signaling molecules. If a ketone is being used as a fuel, it will come to a cell. Then the ketone will get shuttled into the cell through an MCT (monocarboxylate transporter). When the mitochondria have a lot of pressure to be burning molecules, they get the signal that they need more mitochondria. Fatty acids can have the same effect. When a cell is burning a lot of fatty acids for fuel, it will start stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis.  Why The Laws of Thermodynamics Are Misleading Regarding Weight Loss People are producing ketones and breathing out ketones, and urinating them out. Remember, ketones have a caloric value. Calories matter, but don't worry about them. Let the calories take care of themselves. Invoking the laws of thermodynamics in nutrition and human metabolism was one of the greatest tragedies in the history of human-relevant science. It absolutely misled us and made us demonize fat and embrace carbohydrates. Hormones matter at least as much as calories because hormones tell the body's cells what to do with the available calories.  The Problems With Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance  Metabolic syndrome used to be called insulin resistance syndrome. Insulin resistance is the single most common problem in the US and abroad. Plus, insulin resistance is relevant to virtually every chronic disease. Covid has only made metabolic problems worse. Luckily, keto and intermittent fasting can help lower insulin. Remember, there is no insulin resistance without elevated insulin. Lowering insulin is a perfect way to help the body become more sensitive to it. If no nutrients are coming into the blood, insulin starts running out of nutrients in the blood that it can store away. So, insulin comes down when nutrients aren't coming into the blood. She grew up in Wisconsin, and earned her dietetics degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1999. While very active throughout her entire lifetime, she struggled with weight gain in college, despite following conventional nutrition recommendations and exercising extensively. It took many years to figure out why she was so much bigger then, but the truth revealed itself when Shana discovered hormonal connections between weight gain, and eventually growing sick and fat. Shana has worked in the medical nutrition therapy field for 20 years. Like most dietitians, she recommended strategies to her clients for much of her career that failed them long-term, with little sustainable weight loss. This proved to be frustrating to both practitioner and client. Armed with new knowledge, an open mind, and simple healing concepts, she developed a 5- Step lifestyle improvement program for her clients, resulting in immediate and sustained success. Megan's major role in the IDM Program is to facilitate the patient's education on the IDM dietary principles and counsel them on their fasting regimens.  Megan, along with her colleague Dr. Jason Fung, believe that both what you eat and when you eat matter. The IDM Program utilizes therapeutic fasting and time restricted eating protocols with their patients to help them reverse their type 2 diabetes and achieve sustainable weight-loss. They encourage their patients to eat real foods and adopt a low-carb lifestyle in addition to the fasting. You Can Be Metabolically Unhealthy But Look Skinny There are two different types of fat: subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is the fat that we are self-conscious of at the beach. It sits between our abdominal wall and our abdominal cavity. This type of fat doesn't exactly go into our organs or infiltrate our organs; it's unsightly, and if we accumulate more of it, it puts us at risk for disease. The secondary type of fat, visceral fat, is a real sneaky bugger. It sits under the abdominal cavity. Plus, this type of fat wraps around your organs and infiltrates into your organs. You can have a lot of visceral fat and still be skinny. The scale doesn't tell us what our body is made up of. Is Insulin Bad For You? Too much of anything good for you is bad for you. Not having enough insulin, that's a problem, or having too much insulin too, is also a problem. Sadly, mainstream medicine doesn't understand the definition of too much insulin. Megan says that there is a time and a place for insulin injections for certain people. However, most people are eating a diet that's highly processed and full of refined sugars and fats. Plus, we're eating all of the time; so, we're making our body produce lots of insulin over time. For North Americans, our constant state is to produce insulin all the time. Our cells will develop resistance. Remember, absence makes the heart grow stronger. Why Megan Loves a Low Carb Approach You don't want to keep adding fuel to the fire; dietary choices are essential. When you're eating low carbs, you're not adding more fuel to the fire, and you're giving your body a chance to burn off some of that fire. When someone already has insulin resistance, insulin resistance causes the body to produce insulin. If you are constantly eating all day long, then insulin is being leaked into the body all day long. Intermittent fasting will help break the cycle of insulin resistance because you will be suffocating the fire. Overall, the body is impressive, and you have to remove the interferences. The Reason You Want Variation For Fasting  You don't want to slip into this one meal-a-day pattern consistently because the body will adapt. You want to keep confusing the body and changing it up; that way, the body won't adapt. It's great to mix things up! Our primary hunger hormone is ghrelin, and when men and women both start fasting, we see a drop in ghrelin. Then men's ghrelin tends just to go up and down, and it stays relatively consistent. However, women will see an initial drop; it will continue to decline more than their male counterparts. Many women feel like they're constantly putting out this enormous fire when doing alternate daily fasting. They would instead rather get into a fast and stay there. If you want to stay in a fast, you can! However, you need to cut out the snacks and reduce problematic foods. In this episode, Nikou speaks to Ben Azadi, founder of The Keto Camp and one of the main people in the industry that’s getting into bio-hacking and teaching people how to be successful in the ketogenic diet, how to do intermittent fasting correctly and helping you find the root cause of your problems not just treating the symptoms that – as Ben says – is true healthcare, not just sickcare. KEY TAKEAWAYS I was following a stupid American diet being unhealthy growing up which made me obese and gave me low self-esteem. Books helped me open up my eyes and they helped me take responsibility and ownership and I started to eat, think and exercise better and transformed my physical appearance as well as my mental health. We’ve seen depression and suicide skyrocket in the last 18-20 months thanks to what’s happening in the world. I’ve been there, looking at ways to kill myself on the internet but then thinking of my Mom and stopping, which became a cycle. What helped for me was to really understand the thoughts that we think. We have 60,000 thoughts per day, but 90% are from the day before, you need to change your paradigm to thoughts that serve us. Every time I had a negative thought I’d let it pass, like a cloud, and choose a better thought. If you change your environment and move away from negative people you begin to think less negatively. It’s proven that thoughts are a frequency, or a soundwave, that penetrate your cells, and there are receptor sites on your cells that allow these frequencies to get inside your cells and communicate with your DNA. Negative, fearful or hateful thoughts will tell your DNA to produce proteins that are inflammatory and can lead to disease. Positive thoughts produce healthy protein that leads to health. The food you eat will determine the thoughts you think. Processed foods give us peaks and troughs in glucose. Eating healthy food puts you into ketosis and your brain loves that. I think all diets work, but not long term. Our ancestors changed their diet from keto to vegetarian when they didn’t have animals to eat. That variation makes your digestive system and cells to grow stronger. Plants have anti-nutrients in them, like toxins, that put predators off eating them. When you eat plants all the time for an extended period of time if damages your gut causing all kinds of problems. You need to remove them from time to time and reintroduce them later. Meat that has been pumped full of medication and fed grain are bad for you, but free-range animals are healthy and can reduce your risk of heart disease. Intermittent fasting is just like keto and our ancestors did this too, so it’s not new either. It’s such an important tool. A lot of people eat too frequently, this will raise glucose an insulin throughout the day – even if you’re eating healthily. Fasting leads to autophagy – eating thyself. Your body will enter into a state where it looks for damaged cells/proteins/mitochondria/fats and will use those for energy. This is good for fighting disease because it gets rid of cells that could cause disease replacing them with healthy cells. Dr Thomas Seyfried (Cancer is a Metabolic disease) says that if you completed a 7 day water only fast once a year you will reduce your risk of cancer by 95% thanks to autophagy. Women and men need to do keto and fasting differently due to differences in hormones pre- and post-menopause. Bio-hacking includes red light therapy, wearing blue-light glasses. But the best thin you can do for your body is going out every day and get a dose of vitamin D while walking between 11am and 2pm.
