Summary In this episode, Justin Townsend and Adam Berkelmans explore the ancient art of food preservation through salting and curing. They discuss the historical significance of salting, the science behind how it works, and practical applications for home cooks. The conversation delves into the unique considerations for salting fish, the impact of salt on texture and flavor, and the importance of precision in curing. They emphasize that while salting and curing can enhance food, they require careful attention and quality ingredients. The episode concludes with a focus on integrating these techniques into a modern wild pantry approach. - Leave a Review of the Podcast - Buy our Wild Fish and Game Spices The Art of Venison Sausage Making Links How To: DIY Cure Chamber Chapters 00:00 The Art of Food Preservation 05:19 Understanding the Science of Salting 13:23 Practical Applications of Salting at Home 21:09 Salting Fish: Unique Considerations 29:42 The Impact of Salting on Texture and Flavor 37:27 Curing and Salting: A Wild Pantry Approach Takeaways You can preserve food without electricity. Dr. Zamir Punja is a Professor of Plant Biotechnology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. His research interests include the etiology and management of plant diseases and the applications of plant biotechnology for disease management. Since 2018, his work has focused on cannabis, identifying and describing a range of previously unreported pathogens affecting the crop and evaluating various methods for disease management.  Zamir is CannMed regular, having presented at 5 previous events. His presentations are always a highlight of the event because they often feature stunning electron microscope images showing plant structures and pathogens up close. In fact, his CannMed 22 presentation about glandular trichomes has gotten more than 300,000 views on our YouTube page, making it the most viewed CannMed presentation.  Zamir will again present at CannMed 26, this time about non-glandular trichomes in a presentation titled “Non-glandular trichomes in cannabis plants can secrete salts”.  During our conversation, we discuss: Non-glandular trichomes: What they are and what they do. How leaf spots, initially mistaken for disease, led to the finding that cannabis secretes excess fertilizer salts through these trichomes. Theories on why the plant would develop the ability to actively excrete excess salts. Practical guidance for cultivators on how to distinguish overfertilization from disease. Future research directions — comparing salt-tolerant vs. non-tolerant strains under varying salinity levels and exploring whether this mechanism explains cannabis’s resilience in drought-prone, high-salt environments. Send a textThe salt can make you or break you, and Rick White has lived on both sides of that line. From towing a $500 high school Corvette to Bonneville and setting a 151 mph record to piloting the first single-engine car beyond 400 mph, Rick's journey blends fearless engineering, family grit, and relentless problem-solving. Growing up at Nolan White's elbow and rooted in land speed racing, He watched his father enter the 200 MPH Club in 1963, he learned how to build speed from wood, steel, and stubborn ideas. We dig into the turning points that define land speed racing. Rick explains why he and Nolan built a rare four-wheel-drive streamliner in 1980 to fight traction loss, how blown fuel became their language, and what it took to sort a one-off machine aimed squarely at 400 mph. He breaks down the differences between SCTA and FIA records, why two-way runs collided with today's shorter, rougher salt, and the day parachute failure on a return run took his father's life. The conversation is raw, clear-eyed, and focused on what changed and what still drives him to innovate safely on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Then we go under the hood of Rick and his son Brad's current project: a competition coupe built around a tiny Honda 600 body to punch the smallest hole in the air. With a 540-cubic-inch blown-fuel big block, carefully set wheelbase, and a hand-formed aluminum nose, the car is aimed at a 305 MPH class record and a blue hat. Rick shares the fix that unlocked new pace—proper tank venting for a bigger fuel pump—and how a 257 mph El Mirage record proved the direction. His years in nostalgia top fuel, including March Meet and Hot Rod Reunion wins, and how the salt taught him how to be a better drag racer. If you love Bonneville history, four-wheel-drive streamliners, FIA records, and the hard math of traction, drag, and fuel delivery, this story hits all the marks. A Scottish ferryman refused to take travelers across the water after dark — and the ones who stayed the night were never seen again. | #WDRadio WEEK OF FEBRUARY 22, 2026==========HOUR ONE: A 178-year-old mystery comes to the surface in a Philadelphia suburb. (Grandfather's Ghost Story Leads to Mass Grave) *** Recently a wrecking crew began tearing down and old building in Rhode Island. But the big burly men on the crew got so frightened they refused to continue the work. Does reconstruction of a home or building anger the souls who once lived there? (Does Remodeling Your Home Disturb The Spirits Who Died There?) *** The way life has grown on our planet requires that all living things feed off each other and must kill others in order to survive.  That's the way of the world if you want to live for any more than a few days. But some people are now claiming they can live without food at all… indefinitely. (Life Without Food) *** Three men were in a shed selling gardening supplies when some strange powder suddenly hit the ceiling. Before they had time to react, a small jug on a shelf abruptly flew across the room. One man picked up the jug and placed it a covered box. Instantly, the jug was...somehow...back on the floor. And that was just the beginning of the strange haunting of a community's garden shed. (The Poltergeist In The Allotment Shed) *** In the movie Salt, Angelina Jolie plays a double-agent who is mind-controlled by scary remnants of the USSR secret service. And in real life, the 1940s bombshell Candy Jones was apparently brainwashed with drugs and used as a CIA covert operative.  (The Supermodel Who Was Brainwashed Into Becoming a Spy) *** No one knows exactly when she was born. Some think, maybe, she was a gypsy. Others say she was the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter. The life of Elizabeth Barnes is a mysterious one, filled with many loves, losses, and prognostications. (The Witch of Plum Hollow) *** Some travelers, arriving late at night to board Oliver's Ferry the next day, stayed at Oliver's house. But they were never seen making the ferry crossing the next morning. Is it possible that the rumors are true – that they never left the house alive? (The Frights of Oliver's Ferry)==========HOUR TWO: An eerie tombstone stands watch over one of Portland Oregon's oldest cemeteries. And the story behind that tombstone is a strange one. Speaker: Rob BerrethScripture: Matthew 5:10–16Episode Overview:In Matthew 5:10–16, Jesus declares that His people are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. This message explores what that identity means in a culture shaped by Christian influence yet increasingly untethered from Christ Himself. The church's strength has never come from blending in, grasping for power, or retreating in fear. It has come from embodying the Beatitudes—poverty of spirit, mercy, purity, peacemaking—and living distinctly in the world for the glory of the Father.Drawing on insights from The Air We Breathe by Glen Scrivener and historical reflections like Dominion by Tom Holland, this sermon considers how Christian convictions have shaped society—and why remaining faithful to Jesus still matters. When believers stay salty and let their light shine, some will be drawn to glorify the Father. Others may resist. Yet Christ's kingdom advances, and He promises blessing to those who are harassed for righteousness' sake.Key Highlights:• Identity before influence – Salt and light flow from the transformed character described in the Beatitudes.• Distinct, not diluted – The church is most potent when it is truly different from the surrounding culture.• Faithful presence – Neither compromise nor retreat fulfills Jesus' call; we are sent into the world without becoming shaped by it.• Wisdom in a polarized age – Christian faithfulness often defies easy political categories, following Christ above all.• Expect both fruit and friction – Some will glorify God because of faithful witness; others may respond with opposition.• Unshakeable hope – The risen Christ builds His church, and no resistance can overturn His kingdom.Call to Action:Ask the Lord to search your life. Where have you grown dim or lost your saltiness? Repent where needed. Re-anchor yourself in Scripture. Pray for courage to speak with grace and truth. Look for one concrete place—at work, at school, in your neighborhood, in your home—where you can shine distinctly for Christ this week. Step forward in humble confidence, trusting that faithfulness in small acts carries eternal weight.Redeemer Church211 Northshore Dr. Bellingham, WA 98226www.redeemernw.org

Chlorine at zero and a control panel full of mixed messages can make any pool owner or service pro feel stuck. We break the problem apart step by step so you can restore steady saltwater chlorination with confidence, starting with the most common culprits and moving into the hidden faults that waste time and chemicals. We start at the cell, explaining how thin scale films quietly choke production long before a “clean cell” warning appears, and the right acid‑wash ratios that protect plates. Then we put the panel's salinity reading to the test with a handheld meter, outlining the true operating window of 2800 to 3500 ppm and why 3000 ppm is a practical sweet spot. You'll learn how false low and high salt readings point to aging cells or sensors and what to expect from brands like Hayward and Pentair when their cells near end‑of‑life. Temperature gets its due as we show why most generators idle in the low 60s and how to bridge winter with a simple floater plan. From there, we dig into hardware and hydraulics. Flow sensors, chewed wires, and bad switches can lock out generation, and a dirty filter or slow variable‑speed schedule starves the cell of activation flow. We share dependable RPM targets, filter habits, and placement tips to keep water moving through the cell safely. You'll also hear a clear method to benchmark production: run one 24‑hour, 100 percent, high‑RPM cycle and measure the chlorine rise. That single test separates hardware failures from runtime math, letting you tune hours, RPMs, and output percentage to match pool size, sunlight, and bather load.• dirty cell plates blocking current and how to clean safely• verifying salinity with a meter and ideal ppm range• recognizing false low and high salt readings• temperature thresholds that shut down production• expected cell lifespan and end‑of‑life signs• failed sensors, chewed wires, and flow‑switch problems• pump RPM, filter condition, and activation flow• benchmarking output with a 24‑hour full‑power test• dialing runtime and percentage to meet demandSend a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! Lot fails to act on God's Word with urgency and needlessly delays leaving Sodom. The LORD remains merciful to Lot in his weakness, and the angels agree to Lot's requests. The LORD's destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is just and calls all to repent of their sins. At the same time that the LORD is destroying the wickedness of sin, He is also rescuing His people in faithfulness to His promise. After Lot's wife becomes a pillar of salt, Lot's daughters take advantage of their father in his grief. Even as this text shows the effects of sin, God's mercy does not fail.  Rev. Andy Wright, pastor at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Topeka, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Genesis 19:15-38.  To learn more about St. John's in Topeka, visit stjohnlcmstopeka.org. “In the Beginning” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies Genesis. The first book of Moses sets the stage for God's entire story of salvation. As we learn the beginning of the story, God prepares us to receive the fulfillment of the story: Jesus Christ, the Offspring of the woman who has crushed our enemy's head.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
