Summer is the season for road trips, and also for road trip stories. Jack Kerouac's “On the Road” may be the most famous example in American literature — but there are lots of other great road trip books, so this week the Book Review's staff critics Dwight Garner, Alexandra Jacobs and Jennifer Szalai presented readers with a list of 18 of their favorites. On this episode of the podcast they chat with host Gilbert Cruz about the project, their picks and the top-down, wind blown, carefree appeal of the road trip narrative as a genre.Books discussed in this episode:“On the Road,” by Jack Kerouac“Sing, Unburied, Sing,” by Jesmyn Ward“Lost Children Archive,” by Valeria Luiselli“I Am Homeless if This Is Not My Home,” by Lorrie Moore“Tramps Like Us," by Joe Westmoreland“Driving Mr. Albert,” by Michael Paterniti“Gypsy: A Memoir," by Gypsy Rose Lee“The Dog of the South,” by Charles Portis“All Fours,” by Miranda July“Hearts,” by Hilma Wolitzer“The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories From My Life,” by John le Carré“Machine Dreams,” by Jayne Anne Phillips“Lonesome Dove,” by Larry McMurtry“Lolita,” by Vladimir Nabokov“The Grapes of Wrath,” by John Steinbeck“The Price of Salt,” by Patricia Highsmith Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. She tells host Ken Miller that the modern debate over encryption and cybersecurity dates back to a cyber espionage operation run by Chinese hackers called “Salt Typhoon” that breached various parties and critical U.S. infrastructure, including wiretapping members of both the Trump and Harris presidential campaigns. Their ability to breach texts and voice messages and access databases highlighted inefficiencies in America's cybersecurity infrastructure – and the tension between protecting American citizens from cyberattacks while posing additional challenges to law enforcement agencies worldwide. To learn more about today's topics or to stay updated on EMSO and EW developments, visit our homepage. We also invite you to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions for future episodes by emailing host Ken Miller at host@fromthecrowsnest.org.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4th, brings about several important tax changes. I'm discussing what these updates mean, especially for retirees, and sharing practical advice on how to take advantage of new deductions and avoid unexpected tax hits.  From permanent adjustments to tax brackets and an increased standard deduction, to special benefits for those aged 65 and older, I cover everything you need to know to optimize your retirement strategy. Whether you're curious about Social Security taxation, itemized deductions in high-tax states, or planning smart Roth conversions, this episode is packed with insights to help you make informed financial decisions for your golden years. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [00:00] An overview of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). [06:13] Roth conversion tax implications. [07:29] Additional deductions for those over 65 increase total deductions. [11:35] TCJA and SALT deduction changes. [13:43] Strategies to lower taxable income for retirees. Key Tax Changes Every Retiree Needs to Know About the One Big Beautiful Bill Act One of the most impactful provisions of the OBBBA is making existing federal income tax brackets permanent. The 2017 TCJA tax brackets —10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37% —had been set to expire after 2025, which would have led to higher rates. The new act not only locks these rates in place but also indexes the brackets for inflation. While there are minor changes in the income thresholds at the lower brackets, the net result is stability for taxpayers, and retirees can now plan with confidence, knowing their marginal tax rates aren't set for an imminent hike. Higher Standard Deductions Standard deductions also see positive changes, rising to $15,750 for individuals and $31,500 for married couples filing jointly. Previously, these figures were $15,000 and $30,000, respectively. With higher deductions, more retirees may find it beneficial to take the standard deduction rather than itemizing, saving time and potentially reducing taxable income. Extra Deductions for Retirees 65+ Perhaps the most significant impact for retirees: From 2025 through 2028, filers aged 65 and up can claim an additional $6,000 deduction per person. For couples where both spouses are over 65, that's a $12,000 boost, on top of the already existing extra deduction for seniors ($2,000 for individuals, $3,200 for couples). So, if both spouses are over 65 and income is below the required threshold, the combined standard deduction could reach $46,700. There is a catch, though: this extra deduction phases out as income rises, disappearing entirely for individuals making $175,000 or more and couples earning $225,000 or more in modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). The deduction is reduced by 6% for every dollar over $75,000 (for individuals) or $150,000 (for couples). For example, if a couple's MAGI is $200,000, they'd lose $3,000 of the $6,000 deduction per spouse. Timing IRA distributions or Roth conversions helps you stay under these thresholds and maximize deductions. Social Security Taxation Although there was political talk about ending Social Security taxation, the OBBBA preserves the old rules. How much of your Social Security benefit is taxable depends on your combined income, still calculated as adjusted gross income plus 50% of your Social Security benefit. The deduction enhancements may help lower your taxable income, keeping more Social Security benefits untaxed, but there are no direct changes here. Being mindful of when and how you draw taxable income can keep more of your Social Security out of the IRS's reach. Itemized Deductions and SALT Cap Changes For high-tax state residents and those with larger itemized deductions, another headline is the increase in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap. Temporarily, from now through 2029, the cap rises from $10,000 to as much as $40,000 (with phase-outs for high earners, those over $500,000 in MAGI lose this benefit, and it disappears after $600,000). This can provide significant relief for homeowners or retirees in states with high property or state income taxes. The mortgage interest deduction rules remain unchanged, and when combined with the higher SALT cap, could make itemizing more attractive for some. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act creates opportunities and considerations for retirees. Take the time to review your financial plan, explore new deduction limits, and coordinate with tax and financial professionals. Thoughtful adjustment now can lead to years of improved after-tax retirement income.  Resources Mentioned Retirement Readiness Review Subscribe to the Retire with Ryan YouTube Channel Download my entire book for FREE  Connect With Morrissey Wealth Management  www.MorrisseyWealthManagement.com/contact   Subscribe to Retire With Ryan

Chef Kyle Perkins has found his culinary home at Salt & Meadow inside The Tides Inn in Irvington, Virginia, where the breathtaking waterfront views and local seafood inspire his cooking. "I came and I walked through the front door at the Tides Inn. I saw the view, and I said, 'Yep, sign me up,'" Perkins said. Before joining The Tides Inn as executive chef, Perkins worked at Twin Farms, a boutique resort in Vermont that he describes as "a true definition of escaping reality" with no phone service and a secluded woodland setting. The Vermont native's journey to The Tides Inn came after a stint in San Francisco during 2020, when the pandemic made city living unaffordable and limited opportunities. He returned to Vermont, briefly worked in landscaping, then joined Twin Farms under chef Nathan Rich, who provided "an excellent platform for me to excel and grow." When the opportunity at The Tides Inn presented itself through Tanzerra Resorts, the property's parent company, Perkins was immediately drawn to the unique coastal setting. The transition from Vermont to Virginia's Northern Neck brought significant changes to his culinary approach. At Twin Farms, Perkins served about 28 guests and could change menus at will. At The Tides Inn, he feeds up to 300 people daily and focuses on consistency. "Making sure that recipes are extremely consistent, because I don't have the ability every single day to change the menu," Perkins said. Being on the water has also influenced his menu, with seafood playing a prominent role. Perkins has even worked on an oyster farm to better understand the local industry. "I've worked out on an oyster farm for a couple of days, and they were 12-hour back-breaking days. It's no joke. I have a lot more respect for what they're doing out there on the water," Perkins said. To source local ingredients, Perkins explores the area and builds relationships with producers like Young Overholt in Gloucester, which raises cattle on seventh-generation family land. "He's pushing for quality. He's not pushing for quantity. And that's something that we want to promote," Perkins said. "As we kind of reverse back in time, and we go back to this farm to table, which used to be the norm, and we go back to buying things from your neighbor and not buying it from a supermarket." The Tides Inn offers guests a unique experience on a peninsula that feels secluded yet welcoming. The property features a boardwalk showcasing their living shoreline, a marina, croquet lawn, bocce court, and the more casual Fish Hawk bar. While the restaurant is "a little more upscale" with a dress code, Perkins aims to create an inviting atmosphere with elevated home-style cooking. "We want them to feel welcome. We want them to feel at home, but like whoa. This tastes like home-cooked food, but it doesn't look like it. It's a level up," Perkins said. The Tides Inn continues to add unique experiences for guests, including crab feasts on boat rides and, most recently, seaplane tours that depart directly from the property. The Innermost House: A Memoir (Bright Leaf, 2024) is a stunning account of year-round life on the windswept shores of Cape Cod, threaded with meditations on memory, forgetting, and identity. About The Innermost House, Publishers Weekly writes, “Salt air and the limits of memory animate this heartrending debut. . . . Readers will be captivated.” Shelf Awareness calls the book “Enthralling” adding that “Blakeley is an evocative writer who captures the lush beauty of a ‘half feral' childhood spent immersed in the natural world while never losing sight of the precarity and violence that permeated it.” Foreword Reviews calls the book “a distinctive memoir with a keen sense of place and renewal.” Raised in a nineteenth-century saltbox house in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Cynthia Blakeley was both surrounded by generations of immediate and extended family and isolated by the mysteries locked inside her affectionate yet elusive mother and short-fused father. While she and her sisters and cousins roamed the Outer Cape—drinking in the dunes, swimming in kettle ponds, and dancing in Provincetown—Blakeley also turned to the inner world of her journals as she contended with her own secrets and memories. Over-identifying with her unconventional and artistic mother, Blakeley felt certain that the key to understanding her mother's drinking and distractions, her generosity and easy forgiveness, was the unexplained absence of two of Blakeley's half-siblings and their connection to her mother's unhappy first marriage. Blakeley kept her distance, however, from her disciplinarian father. Though he took his daughters sailing and clamming and beachcombing, he was the chill to their mother's warmth, the maker, not the breaker, of rules. Slipping through these dynamics in that small house and evocative landscape, Blakeley eventually crossed the bridge and left home, only to return later in search of the family stories that would help her decode her present. Blakeley's captivating memoir moves fluidly through time, grappling with the question of who owns a memory or secret and how our narrative choices not only describe but also shape and change us. In this insightful and poignant account of tenacious year-rounders on Cape Cod, Blakeley contends that making sense of ourselves is a collaborative affair, one that begins with understanding those we came from.
