As Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary, The Trek Files welcomes a performer who was there before the beginning and then came back for the episode that introduced the series to television audiences. Stunt performer Sandy Gimpel first entered the Star Trek universe as one of the Talosians in "The Cage." When the series went into production, she returned to inhabit one of its most memorable creatures: the shape-shifting M-113 creature, better known to generations of fans as the Salt Vampire, in "The Man Trap." This week's document is an excerpt from George Clayton Johnson's June 16, 1966 final draft of "The Man Trap." Before the story even begins, a note to the director explains the creature's ability to appear differently to different people and suggests giving "Nancy" an identifiable gesture to help the audience follow her transformations. The script's cast list, meanwhile, simply identifies the creature as a silent role ("CREATURE (?)") giving little indication of the character that would become one of the most recognizable images from early Star Trek. Sandy joins Larry to remember what bringing that creature to life actually required in 1966: a plaster cast of her head, a custom-made mask and costume, severely restricted vision, and an ingenious low-tech technique for matching her position to actress Jeanne Bal so the two could transform into one another on camera. When the costume made it nearly impossible for Sandy to hit her mark opposite William Shatner, she asked Gene Roddenberry to let her rehearse without it, counted her steps like the dancer she was, and then repeated the movement once she had been sewn back inside the creature. The conversation also reaches beyond Star Trek, tracing Sandy's remarkable career from dancer and background performer to stuntwoman, stunt coordinator and director. Stunt performer Sandy Gimpel first entered the Star Trek universe as one of the Talosians in "The Cage." When the series went into production, she returned to inhabit one of its most memorable creatures: the shape-shifting M-113 creature, better known to generations of fans as the Salt Vampire, in "The Man Trap." This week's document is an excerpt from George Clayton Johnson's June 16, 1966 final draft of "The Man Trap." Before the story even begins, a note to the director explains the creature's ability to appear differently to different people and suggests giving "Nancy" an identifiable gesture to help the audience follow her transformations. The script's cast list, meanwhile, simply identifies the creature as a silent role ("CREATURE (?)") giving little indication of the character that would become one of the most recognizable images from early Star Trek. Sandy joins Larry to remember what bringing that creature to life actually required in 1966: a plaster cast of her head, a custom-made mask and costume, severely restricted vision, and an ingenious low-tech technique for matching her position to actress Jeanne Bal so the two could transform into one another on camera. Primary Election Sabotage and Party Betrayal Ron Ahlers explains that two candidates who had only recently switched their registration from Democrat or independent to Republican entered the race, one of whom did not even realize the job required moving to Sacramento and filed his paperwork the day the deadline closed, yet received financial backing from established Republicans opposed to Elizabeth. Elizabeth adds that both parties knew she could win and preferred to hand the seat to the Democratic incumbent rather than let a candidate with her values take it. She describes how their local Republican Central Committee, whose job is recruiting winning candidates, wrote letters protesting the county and state party's interference, which exposed to grassroots Republicans how leadership favored personal power over principle. Ron describes mailers from a group called Reform California, led by an assemblyman named Carl DeMaio, falsely claiming an opposing candidate had won an endorsement Elizabeth had actually won, calling it deceit and lying, while Elizabeth notes the fragile, closely contested state party platform and an internal Log Cabin Republican caucus pushing the party away from its pro-family positions. Common Sense, History, and the Church's Role Pastor Ron Greer presses Elizabeth and Ron on what the party establishment is really trying to prevent and protect, and Elizabeth answers bluntly that personal ambition and power matter more to party leaders than winning elections or defending families. Ron Greer cites his own research that California has roughly eight to nine million evangelical Protestant Christians, among the highest concentrations in the country, and argues there is not a single election at any level Christians could not decide if they simply voted, laying the failure at the feet of pastors who preach that politics will not save the country. Schofield agrees, noting that pastors and pulpits led the American Revolution and the Civil War and asking what changed, while Elizabeth describes her work through Salt and Light Council, a national key-turn ministry founded by Diane Reeves that places biblical citizenship materials in churches, and warns that California's new statewide Islamic holiday curriculum may be the shock that finally wakes congregations up. Paul Hall's Common Sense History Lesson Dr. Paul Hall recalls a July statement from a White House official warning that American institutions have grown too soft to defend themselves, then reminds Elizabeth of her own words from March, that she is running to save California for the children coming behind her. He quotes Benjamin Franklin's line that democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on lunch while liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote, then walks through Thomas Paine's 1776 pamphlet Common Sense and its influence on Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, asking whether common sense can still work in politics when history has been rewritten and the founders forgotten. Elizabeth says her voter base showed real hunger for common sense and anger at party corruption, and Hall follows with a grim list of statistics, California's cost of living, poverty, homelessness, education rankings, and energy and water troubles, concluding that common sense alone tells anyone paying attention that the state is in serious trouble. Ron Greer's Own Battle and a Closing Prayer Ron Greer shares that the Republican Party once tried to stop him the same way, recruiting three twenty-something volunteers to run his own campaign after the establishment blacklisted him, winning a primary against the odds only to have national funding vanish and local leadership work openly against him, until a source told him Republicans and Democrats had privately agreed to protect each other's incumbents in neighboring districts. Elizabeth responds that the same corrupt system explains why the establishment cannot be bought or controlled by people like them and therefore does not want them at all. Schofield closes by quoting Galatians on not growing weary in well-doing, promising to invite the Ahlers back to finish sharing their family photographs, and mentioning a supporter named Janet Collins who is praying for them. With only minutes left, Schofield asks his wife Melba to pray, and she thanks God for using Elizabeth and Ron and asks him to continue blessing them and the whole team before the closing theme plays.

In his sermon, “The Foolishness of a Dirty Cup” centered on Luke 11:14-54, Pastor Alex exposes the foolishness of moralism and reveals the dangers that moralistic beliefs can lead to. Knowledge is wonderful, but even if you know everything about God's word, and do not allow it to change your life, ultimately that knowledge is wasted. Through Christ, not only can filthy sinners be forgiven, but they are made new.

Inverse 5 he asks: “Do you not remember that when I was still with you Itold you these things?” I find that verse interesting. Remember, Paulhad not spent years with these believers. His time in Thessalonica had beenrelatively brief. Yet while he was there, he taught them about the return ofChrist and the prophetic events surrounding it. That tells me that Bibleprophecy isn't something we should ignore. Some people say, “Prophecy is toocomplicated. Let's just talk about practical Christian living.” But Paulapparently didn't separate the two. He taught new believers about the return ofJesus. And when properly understood, prophecy is very practical. If I believeJesus could come again, it should affect the way I live today. It should affectmy priorities. It should affect how I use my time. It should affect how I treatpeople. It should affect my desire to share the Gospel. And it should cause meto live with my eyes toward heaven. ThenPaul says in verse 6: “And now you know what is restraining, that he maybe revealed in his own time.” That word “restraining” isvery important. Something—or Someone—is presently holding back the fullmanifestation of evil and preventing this “man of sin” from being revealedbefore God's appointed time. Notice those final words: “In his own time.”The Antichrist cannot simply appear whenever Satan chooses. Satan isnot controlling the prophetic calendar. God is.  ThenPaul says in verse 7: “For the mystery of lawlessness is already atwork.” Paul wrote those words nearly two thousand years ago. Lawlessnesswas already working in Paul's day. And it is still working today. The spirit ofrebellion against God has been present throughout human history. John expressedsomething similar when he wrote in 1 John 2:18 that many antichrists hadalready come. The final Antichrist had not yet appeared, but the spirit ofopposition to Christ was already operating in the world. We certainly don'thave to look very far to see that spirit today. ButPaul says something is restraining it. And then he makes this remarkablestatement: “Only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out ofthe way.” Now we come to a question Bible students have discussed forcenturies: Who is the Restrainer? Paul doesn't specifically identify Himhere. There have been several interpretations. But I personally believe Paul isspeaking of the restraining ministry of the Holy Spirit working through theChurch. Think about what Jesus said to His followers. He said: “Youare the salt of the earth.” Salt in the ancient world was used as apreservative. It slowed corruption. Jesus also said: “You are the lightof the world.” Light pushes back darkness. Everywhere genuine believerslive for Jesus Christ, preach the Gospel, pray, stand for truth, anddemonstrate the love and righteousness of Christ, there is a restraininginfluence against evil. Not because we possess that power ourselves. It isbecause the Holy Spirit lives within us. AndI believe there is coming a day when the Church will be caught up to meet theLord in the air. When that happens, the Holy Spirit's present restrainingministry through the Church will be removed, allowing the man of sin tobe revealed in God's appointed time. Now, that does not mean that theHoly Spirit will cease to exist or cease working on the earth. God the HolySpirit is omnipresent. He was working in the world before the Church began atPentecost, and He will continue working according to God's purposes. Whatchanges is His particular restraining ministry through the Church.  Sometimeswe look around at our world and become discouraged. We see evil. We seeviolence. We see immorality. We see people rejecting biblical truth. And wemight wonder: “What difference can one Christian possibly make?” Morethan you think. Jesus didn't ask us to remove all the darkness. He told us to shinein it. He didn't ask us to stop all the corruption. He told us to be salt.

Breathe through your nose: Take a few slow breaths in through your nose and notice the scents carried in the air. Pay attention: Notice what catches your attention; don't be concerned with trying to identify smells Follow your curiosity: Move toward different plants, trees, flowers, or other natural elements and see how their scents change. Notice what comes up: Pay attention to any memories, emotions, or sense of place that a particular scent evokes. Stay present: Take a moment to appreciate the experience and notice how you feel after giving your sense of smell your full attention.
