This week we are doing something a bit different. Often this podcast is a space for a deep dive into an article that you can read about on the Velo website. This week we are instead going to learn more about contributor Lisa Charlebois. Mike Levy and I sat down to chat with Charlebois about a ride she once did. This wasn't an ordinary ride, though. Charlebois does a lot of big rides, but this one was even bigger. It is called the Midnight Sun Randonneur, and it is a 1,215-kilometer (755-mile) loop that starts six hours north of Stockholm in Umeå, Sweden, pushes north into the Arctic Circle to the Norwegian Sea, and then loops back. Because the event takes place during the Scandinavian midsummer, there is no real sunset, just a constant daylight that messes with your sense of time. The mass start kicks off at 11:00 PM, and riders navigate to checkpoints roughly every 100 kilometers where they refuel on local items like deep-fried dumplings and moose meat sandwiches. Beyond that framework, it is an unsupported ride with a 90-hour time limit. You carry your own gear and sleep when you can. To put her pacing into perspective, Lisa's first day on the bike covered 470 kilometers (292 miles) with over 15,500 feet of climbing. That initial push took 19 hours of moving time through rolling hills and endless Swedish forests before the landscape drastically shifted. Just in case you thought things weren't hard enough, the third day is where the weather broke. Lisa and the remaining riders faced roughly 200 kilometers of driving, freezing rain. Of course, like any ultra-endurance event, crossing the finish line was met with no fanfare. Does that sound like your idea of a good time? Maybe not, but that's the kind of thing Charlebois brings to the table when she shares her perspective about a bike. We are rolling the original gear talk on the Ark Vigg and Vigg Air, the suit Chris has loved since his first swimrun in 2020 and has not stopped talking about since.  This one comes straight from the vault, originally Episode 188 from August 10, 2023. The crew starts with gear updates, Ark prototype goggles, new flip-flops, and Stasher bags as a solution for organizing electrolyte tabs, before getting into the full Vigg breakdown.  We get into what makes the Vigg and Vigg Air work, the Yamamoto limestone neoprene, the glide skin coating, and the seal on the sleeveless Vigg Air that designer Daniel Sand and his team in Sweden spent so much time dialing in. We talk through who this suit fits best, why it makes more sense as a second suit than a first, the back venting, the pocket setup, and where the fit and sizing can get tricky depending on body type.  Chris also reads an original poem he wrote about the Vigg, because eight months without talking about this suit was apparently too long to go without writing one. The CEO of Heart Aerospace describes the development of a hybrid-electric 30-seat regional commercial aircraft. In the news, a near miss at Boston Logan between a landing Delta Air Lines flight and a departing American Airlines flight, NASA's Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) program, Canada’s purchase of F-35A fighters and possibly Saab Gripens, and Canada’s look at early-warning-radar planes. Guest Anders Forslund is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Heart Aerospace, formed to electrify short-haul regional aviation. Heart Aerospace is developing the ES-30, a hybrid-electric 30-seat regional commercial aircraft. Heart is currently in upstate New York, testing the X1 demonstrator aircraft, which the company says will be the largest electric aircraft ever to fly. The company is backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Ventures and Y Combinator, as well as operator/investors United Airlines and Air Canada. Anders explains Heart Aerospace’s mission to lower the cost of air travel and how their clean-sheet Part 25 airliner will achieve about a 40% reduction in overall operating costs. The ES-30 will be an electric-motor-and-turboprop hybrid, while the full-scale X1 prototype is all-electric. The X1 demonstrator has completed low-speed taxi testing at the company’s X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. Aviation News Horrifying Near Miss at Boston Logan as Quick-Thinking Delta Air Pilots Go Around to Avoid Landing On Top of American Airlines Boeing 737 Delta Air Lines flight DL-2351, an Airbus A319 flying from Dallas, was landing at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), was cleared to land on runway 33L. Moments later, American Airlines flight AA-3161, a Boeing 737-800, was cleared to take off for Charlotte from intersecting runway 27. The pilots repeated the instruction back to the controller, and after about 40 seconds, started the takeoff. As Delta flight 2351 was about to touch down, the pilots saw the American Airlines plane and executed a go-around. Electra reveals 100-seat hybrid-electric aircraft concept Electra developed the concept under NASA's Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) program. NASA has commissioned industry and academia to “develop transformative aircraft designs, propulsion technologies, and sustainability solutions for commercial aviation by 2050.” Electra's large airliner concept features a wide “double-bubble” fuselage that generates lift. Propulsion comes from two turbofans under the wings that produce thrust and electricity, as well as three fans mounted on the top of the aft fuselage. Electra says those fans would “ingest and re-energise slower-moving air over the fuselage, a technique known as boundary layer ingestion.” Other AACES participants include the Georgia Institute of Technology with the Liquefied Natural Gas Powered Athena Aircraft Concept, and JetZero with a hydrogen fueled blended wing body design. Congress Questions Air Force's Combat Rescue Readiness As HH-60W Helicopters Get Turned Into VIP Transports The Senate Armed Services Committee filed S. 4784, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2027 (NDAA), which establishes funding levels and authorities for the U.S. military. The 66th annual NDAA supports a total of $1.15 trillion in FY 2027 funding for national defense. In its report [PDF], the Committee expresses concern “about combat search and rescue (CSAR) force structure in the Air Force. In recent years, the Air Force truncated the buy of HH-60Ws and has since transferred 26 HH-60Ws from units responsible for CSAR operations to the Air Force District Washington (AFDW) to replace H-1 helicopters. AFDW uses these helicopters to support contingency response, homeland operations, and ceremonial honors in the National Capital Region. “The committee believes that these actions have left CSAR forces unnecessarily short of the forces needed to support CSAR operations in a major contingency. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of the Air Force to conduct a study of CSAR requirements and capabilities, including HH-60Ws and HC-130Js, and provide a report and briefing on that study to the congressional defense committees, not later than March 31, 2027. “Furthermore, the committee directs the Secretary to avoid making any changes in CSAR force structure until the study is completed and he or she has provided the results of that study to the Congress.” Canada Plans Fleet Surge to 140+ Fighters as Low Cost Gripens Reduce Expenses According to informed sources, the Royal Canadian Air Force plans to grow its fighter fleet to 140, possibly by purchasing Saab Gripen jets. Canada has planed to purchase 88 F-35A fighters, but that could drop to 70, accompanied by 70 Gripens. Saab offered to establish final assembly, maintenance, and long-term industrial support in Canada. This would transfer technology and intellectual property to Canada. Under the F-35 program, sustainment and software updates are centralized in the United States. Canada to buy Swedish surveillance plane over US models Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would not purchase early-warning-radar planes from the United States. Instead, they will purchase Saab’s GlobalEye, which is based on the Bombardier Global 6500 jet, manufactured in Canada. Price and fleet size were not announced. Saab said in a statement that as part of any deal, the company would invest in research and development work in Canada. A question we will not stop asking. Karina Holmer was murdered 30 years ago today. She was 20, barely an adult, and straddling two worlds when she was pulled from a dumpster by someone rummaging for cans. It was a brutal discovery.On the afternoon of Sunday, June 23, 1996, her remains were found wrapped in trash bags in a dumpster in the Fenway. She was strangled, washed, bisected, discarded. Only part of Karina was returned to her family in Sweden. The other part of her has never been found.Over the years, so many stories have been told, suspicions raised, misinformation spread. It is inevitable, I'm afraid, to stop people from theorizing and making stuff up.In this replay, we trace what we knew about those last hours and where the investigation led. In the years since I began researching her case, I have learned more and spoken to people with information about those months, weeks, and days leading up to her murder. It was a pleasure to speak with Jessica and listen as she shared  all that she experienced as a high school drop out and single mother with a husband behind bars.   This major turning point in her life,  motivated her to complete her GED as well as complete college and law school, with honors, in order to help those similarly unfamiliar with the way the criminal justice system works.  When you hear the compelling stories about both  Jessica and her mother, you'll say, 'the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.'   Both women have been working tirelessly for decades in order to educate victims and their family members,  as well as inform  society to be more compassionate and aware and to update the parole and probation system. Resilience is one of the words that Jessica uses over and over again when describing her mother Maria who is originally from  Stockholm, Sweden.  Jessica also describes her mom as "a pioneer in her field." Very early on in the AIDS epidemic, Maria was involved with helping patients and their families maneuver the scary waters of a frightening disease.  While in graduate school, Maria brought her days old daughter Jessica with her to class.  Jessica went where ever her mother took her, to HIV/Aids conferences, seminars, etc. "She showed us"  says Jessica, when referring to her mother, "by her actions, not her words, on how to live life." Jessica was adamant about how her mom had a "show them, don't tell them" philosophy about life. In other words, Maria was an  example by her actions, not her words. Jessica reflects, "I never once saw my mom give up." Again, the parallels between mother and daughter are striking, Maria working with HIV/AIDS patients and Jessica with people in prison. Again, those whose lives were turned upside down, found a smart, caring and devoted women to make a difference in these unfortunate individuals lives. When Kim Kardashian West wanted tutoring in law once aware of wrongfully incarcerated first time offenders, she went to Jessica Jackson for help.  On November 29, 2019, USA Today wrote "Kim Kardashian West came on board with the campaign after she heard about Alice Marie Johnson, a grandmother who had served 21 years of a life sentence for her first-ever drug conviction, and was moved to help. Kardashian West was instrumental in convincing Trump to grant Johnson clemency. "  That's just one of thousands of cases that Jackson has had overturned and continues to fight in order to get families back together under one roof. Both of these women with all that they have accomplished and continue  to accomplish is living proof that if you set your mind to something, anything and everything is possible. As colorectal cancer rates rise among younger adults, surgeons are increasingly caring for patients with rectal cancer who are pregnant or hoping to preserve future fertility. With more individuals delaying childbearing, balancing effective cancer treatment with fertility preservation and maternal–fetal safety has become an important clinical challenge. This timely topic was recently highlighted by Dr. Sharon Suwanabol during a presentation at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons annual meeting 2026. In this episode, we explore the intersection of rectal cancer, fertility, and pregnancy through a multidisciplinary, case-based discussion.
