The family of Yonatan Samerano, 21, who was murdered during the October 7th , 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel has filed a lawsuit in the Jerusalem District Court against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), alleging the agency played a role in his abduction and death. The lawsuit, submitted by attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the president of Shurat HaDin, the Israel Law Center, on behalf of Samerano’s estate and immediate family, seeks NIS 25 million in punitive damages under Israel’s Compensation for Victims of Terrorism Law. It names UNRWA, a UNRWA employee alleged to have taken part in the attack, and several current and former senior UNRWA officials as defendants. Here's something most people don't know: In California, families cannot start an involuntary psychiatric conservatorship. Only hospital staff can initiate that process — and only if the patient is "gravely disabled," meaning unable to provide food, clothing, or shelter for themselves.Being violent doesn't count. Being delusional doesn't count. Terrorizing your family doesn't count. If you can tell a psychiatrist where you're going to sleep tonight, you walk out the door.Nick Reiner reportedly lived in his parents' guest house. He allegedly had food, clothing, shelter — provided by Rob and Michele. Under California law, that meant he wasn't "gravely disabled." So even if he was psychotic, even if his medication had been changed and he was spiraling, even if his father told friends he was afraid for his life — there was nothing the family could legally do to force long-term treatment.This episode explores the 1967 law that created this reality. The Lanterman-Petris-Short Act was supposed to end the abuses of indefinite commitment. It succeeded. But it also stripped families of any meaningful ability to intervene before tragedy strikes. California went from 37,000 patients in state hospitals to fewer than 1,500 on conservatorships today.Where did everyone go? Nursing homes. Family homes. The streets. Raskin questioned whether Columbia conducted adequate due diligence, whether any donations or benefits were accepted directly or indirectly, and how Epstein's presence may have been normalized or concealed within academic circles. The tone of the letter made clear that this was not a casual inquiry but an accountability demand, rooted in the concern that elite institutions repeatedly failed to erect meaningful barriers against Epstein despite ample warning signs.Raskin's letter also framed Columbia as part of a broader pattern in which powerful institutions insulated themselves with silence, procedural ambiguity, and selective memory. He emphasized that universities are not passive victims of association, but active gatekeepers whose decisions can legitimize predators and marginalize survivors. By demanding records, explanations, and transparency, Raskin signaled that Epstein's academic enablers should not be treated as incidental footnotes to his crimes. The letter underscored that reputational laundering through academia was a key component of Epstein's power and protection, and that Columbia's answers would speak volumes about whether elite institutions are willing to confront their own role in that system.
