Last week, KALW attended the 2025 San Francisco Press Club awards… and left with five wins! This next story was reported back in February, and took home an award for ‘Best Reporting'. When it first aired, organizers in California had been working for months to spread the word about this helpline/ a helpline for perpetrators of domestic and intimate partner violence. You heard that right. A helpline for perpetrators, not victims. It's an unusual approach to a serious problem: Rates of domestic violence in the U.S. are high, and they got even worse during the pandemic. The helpline – A Call for Change – promises anonymity to its callers. And their goal is to provide a non-carceral approach to preventing domestic and intimate partner violence.

In this episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Mae shares her journey as a survivor of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse. She describes the early red flags, including love bombing, control, and isolation. Despite initial displays of love and support, her husband's behavior deteriorated, becoming marked by physical violence, emotional abuse, and financial manipulation. Key incidents included a New Year's Eve attack and a bar altercation, which led to his incarceration for assault and domestic violence. Despite his arrest, Mae's divorce was complicated by his enabling family's support and legal maneuvers. It's a story of physical abuse, sexual coercion, emotional abuse, financial manipulation, love bombing, control, isolation, threats, enabling in-laws, trust, support, child abuse, coping strategies, codependency, false imprisonment, family court, divorce, and custody.   *** CONTENT WARNING - We discuss physical abuse and sexual coercion in this episode. *** If you want to be a guest on our survivor story podcast, please click here or send us an email at narcissistapocalypse@pm.me To buy Mae's book, click here. The conversation delves into the immense stress and separation distress that deployments can impose, often leading to emotional disconnection and conflict that may drive individuals to seek solace elsewhere. Her expertise helps listeners navigate the murky waters of self-blame and relationship challenges. As technology bridges the distance between separated partners, it also introduces new dynamics that can inadvertently fuel infidelity. Our discussion touches on how tools like Wi-Fi on military ships enable frequent communication but also open doors for missteps. Dr. Polinsky categorizes affairs into three main types—protest or revenge, "come and get me," and burnout exit—each with its unique emotional drivers. With her guidance, we unravel the complex emotions at play and the potential pitfalls for long-distance and military relationships, offering a roadmap to understanding and addressing these issues. In our final segment, we tackle the intricate psychological factors that often underpin affairs, especially in those with trauma histories or in hyper-masculine professions. We explore the role of compulsive sexual behavior as an escape from emotional pain, drawing connections to childhood experiences that stunt emotional growth. Dr. Polinsky underscores the importance of understanding and patience, highlighting the potential for healing and growth despite the challenges. Through her insights, we aim to inspire hope and foster long-term commitment to change, providing a beacon of hope for those navigating the complexities of infidelity.

These researchers calling today for a ban on alcohol marketing and sponsorship sound to me like they're living in the past. Maybe it's the circles I mix in. But I reckon things have come ahead leaps and bounds when it comes to our drinking culture in New Zealand. And before you start yelling “what about things like crate day mate?” - I'm not saying we've got it perfect. But I think we've moved on from any decade before the current one - when what these experts are saying today might have carried more weight. So health promotion advisor Lizzie Barratt and researcher Dr Debbie Hager are saying that, with people drinking more at this time of the year, there is a spike in violence - especially by men against women and kids. I'm not going to argue with them on that one. But is advertising to blame for that? I don't think so. But it's not just an end-of-year thing. They say there needs to be a permanent ban on alcohol marketing and sponsorship to protect women and children from violence. They say a ban would eliminate alcohol's role in reinforcing a masculine drinking culture and eliminate its link with sporting activities. And, if we do nothing, things will only get worse. But the alcohol adverts I see these days are way different to the ones we used to see. For starters, they are way less “blokey”. They also seem to be promoting restraint, as much as anything. I really started noticing this a couple of years ago. Maybe further back than that. When the beer companies seemed to be putting as much effort into advertising their zero-alcohol products, as their other products. So doesn't that diminish the argument for a marketing ban and sponsorship ban? What's more, whatever I personally choose to drink has nothing to do with what I see on a billboard or whatever beer logo I might see on a rugby jersey. I'm not saying that the alcohol companies should be allowed to run ads encouraging us to get tanked. I‘m just saying that I don't think banning alcohol ads and banning alcohol sponsorships would stop the mongrels who do get pissed and go home and beat up their partners and kids. The house looks perfect from the street—until you step inside and feel the air shift. We sit with survivor, campaigner and author David Challen to trace the shape of coercive control through a child's eyes: a mother's world shrinking, a father's rules governing every room, and a son trying to earn love by molding himself to a script that never fit. This is not a tidy true-crime arc. It's the long echo of control on identity, mental health, and the stories boys are told about how to be men.David unpacks how “small” acts—who can visit, when dinner is served, how money is spent—stack into a total system of power. He names what many miss: economic abuse as a lever, isolation as a tactic, gaslighting as the daily weather. We talk about the man box and the costs of belonging, from silence to self-erasure. We tackle the hard part too: accountability that goes beyond time served. Real repair means naming strategy and impact, especially on children who lived the consequences, and measuring change by consistent, relational behavior over time. For practitioners, we get specific. Speak to children separately. Document patterns, not just incidents. See acting out, addiction, or stoicism as possible signals of exposure to domestic abuse. For schools, use relationship education to decode media, practice empathy, and give boys language without shame. For survivors—especially adult child survivors—claiming identity and community can turn a private burden into shared understanding and support.Search terms like coercive control, boys' mental health, domestic abuse, economic abuse, restorative justice, and healthy masculinity thread through this conversation for a reason: they're the keys to earlier recognition and real change. If this resonates, share it with someone who needs language for what they've lived. The conversation opens with End of the Year reflections and personal milestones—international book releases, masterclasses, collaborations and community work—and quickly moves to a timely, thorny question: can we talk honestly about male violence without “shaming” men? We take a stand for courage, honesty and clarity, using global data, real cases, and practical frameworks to show how accountability, truth about behaviours and their impact and compassion can live side by side. Our goal isn't to score points; it's to keep families safer, support children's well-being, and help men find a way back into healthy connection. We share insights from research in Australia, including applications of the Safe & Together Model in child and family services and in Aboriginal-led settings. That work underscores a core theme: organize around shared values, not shared trauma. We explain why labels and decontextual tags fail families, and why pattern-based, contextual practice—mapping behaviors, impacts, and risk—succeeds. Along the way, we address restorative justice and carceral responses with nuance: both can help or harm depending on how they're used, and some people do require firm containment. The standard remains constant—what increases survivor safety, improves children's stability, and creates the strongest opportunities for behavior change. We also unpack the “shame” debate with care. Shame is a human emotion; the task is to guide it into inclusive responsibility, not silence the conversation. The facts are clear: men are disproportionately perpetrators of serious violence, and boys growing up amid coercive control learn dangerous scripts about loss and power. Naming this is not man-bashing—it's a necessary move toward balance, health, and prevention. We close with a story of loving confrontation that strengthened a father-child bond, offering a model for how accountability can deepen connection rather than destroy it.If this resonates, subscribe and share the episode with someone who cares about safer families, effective practice, and honest conversations. In this episode, I talk about one of the most confusing and insidious forms of manipulation survivors face in high-conflict relationships and co-parenting: Double Speak. It's that moment when control hides behind concern — when an email, message, or conversation sounds calm and reasonable to everyone else, but your body knows something is off. It's when someone says, “I just want what's best for our child,” while taking positions that go directly against your child's needs or the agreements already in place.I break down how Double Speak operates as a tactic of coercive control — how it creates contradiction, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion — and how to start spotting it before you're pulled into another circular argument. I share real-world examples from co-parenting cases, explain how this pattern shows up in court, and offer practical strategies for documenting, responding, and staying grounded when someone twists words to maintain power. If you've ever felt like you were being gaslit by “reasonable” communication, this episode will help you name the manipulation — and reclaim your clarity.Support the showJoin the Patreon: https://patreon.com/Youarenotcrazy *New Course*: Unhooked: Map the Cycle of Abuse in your Relationship Website: Emotional Abuse Coach and high-conflictdivorcecoaching.comInstagram: @emotionalabusecoachEmail: jessica@jessicaknightcoaching.com{Substack} Blog About Recovering from Abuse {E-Book} How to Break Up with a Narcissist{Course} Identify Signs of Abuse and Begin to Heal{Free Resource} Canned Responses for Engaging with an Abusive Partner

After a supremely messed up Munchies' Choice episode last week, we settled back into the late season doldrums with an SVU that seems deadset on being racist against both Italians and West Virginians while wallowing in a domestic violence case that ends badly in a bathtub. Is it believable that the character who meets his maker would have been taking a bath? Were there more inventive or contemporary ways to take out the abuser? Probably not, but why focus on wanting this ep to make sense? Fin is also left to pick up the pieces from his S21 officer-involved shooting, which means that the Munchie Boys have to wade back into the morass of semi-serialized procedurals to watch as the pieces are picked up from a story from which we probably could have been spared.Music:Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business”Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Diana R, Tony B, Barry W, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Lily, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, Johnathon M, Tiffany C, Brian B, Whitney C, Alex, Jannicke HS, Erin M, Florina C, Melissa H, Olivia, Holly F, Karina H, Zak B, Karyn R, and Summer S - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! My guest wrote to me saying "even as a child , my mother had me researching at the library and writing essays on various topics! I went on to pursue higher education and become a teacher, and after retiring from a successful and rewarding career, I went on to write an award winning spiritual fiction and a prominently endorsed 5-book series (in addition to contributing to numerous anthology books."  Dr. Foderaro continues, "I am passionate about handling life's challenges with goodness, compassion, honesty and love. I talk about surviving Family Trauma which initially led to being open to the Universe's signs and synchronicities, and then eventually led to my writing to heal and becoming an author. From a young age, Marni's mother, Elizabeth Ann, taught her daughter many lessons. Often these recurring lessons were meant to instill creativity, discipline and motivation, all skills that Marni says were helpful when becoming a teacher. For example, Marni shares the story of when she was a child and wanted her first ten speed bicycle and many more.  Her mother was steadfast and had specific reasoning as to how Marni could get that bike. You'll have to listen to the show to get all the details. Just so you know, both  Marni and her mother were writers and teachers."My mother was a lover of words and extremely witty and intelligent. She grew up in Florida and North Carolina. She got her   Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in an era and area of the United States  which typically  was unheard of for women, continues Marni. Before completing her Masters, Elizabeth Ann was a high school English teacher in Broward Co., Florida and went on to teach English at Stetson University at DeLand, Florida." Marni is convinced that her mom had tremendous family support and encouragement as a young lady, otherwise "there's no way she could have achieved all that she did" reflects Dr. Foderaro.Marni has many wonderful stories to share about her mother and how she encouraged and supported her as a child and how her mother still influences her today. " I know my mom was a huge part of who I am."Foderaro admits that her upbringing was unconventional compared to her peers. It was the 60's and she and her two younger brothers had plenty of freedom. The kids were often on their own, left to raise themselves, yet plenty of time to be creative. Her father was a college professor. "The freedom had pros and cons", says Foderaro, "I didn't get guidance for many things, it was bittersweet. I was often striving for structure and discipline and I grew up being very organized which helped me with my teaching career." More from Marni's Bio:Marni's life was forever changed after experiencing numerous trauma-induced STEs-Spiritually Transformative Encounters. Marni's 2020 Best Books Award Winning Spiritual fiction “God Came to My Garage Sale” is prominently endorsed by James Redfield, best selling author of “The Celestine Prophecy” series of books and founding directors of IANDS (International Association for Near Death Studies). Marni's latest prominently endorsed 5-book series is entitled: “True Deceit False Love” addresses Domestic Violence, Narcissistic Abuse, Parental Alienation and Intergenerational Family Trauma.Marni is a lover of animals, nature, music and world travel who handles life's challenges with love and compassion. She values honesty, integrity, equality and goodness and prays for peace on earth. In addition to her speaking engagements and various writing endeavors, Foderaro is a contributing author to numerous anthology books, including: “The Last Breath,” “The Evolution of Echo,” “We're All In This Together: Embrace One Another,” “The Ulti-MUTT Book for Dog Lovers” and “bLU Talks Presents” (Business, Life and the Universe.) In January 2022 Marni was inducted into the Bestselling Authors International Organization. She describes the moment she realized she had become a shell of the person she once was—and the day she finally escaped with her son, her dog, and a single laundry basket of clothes. Nick guides the conversation through the grief that survivors carry long after leaving: grief for the life they imagined, grief for the version of themselves they lost, and grief for the safety they never had. Elissa's story is raw, grounding, and rooted in truth, offering survivors and supporters a roadmap toward healing, self-awareness, and reclaiming personal power. A stadium's worth of men—every year. That's the scale of new IPV use suggested by Ten To Men, Australia's landmark longitudinal study of male health. We sit down with research fellow Karlee O'Donnell a Researcher with the Australian Institute of Family Studies to unpack what the data really says about how depression, suicidality, paternal warmth, and social support shape men's risk—and what actually works to prevent harm.Across a decade of surveys, one in three men self-reported using some form of intimate partner violence. Yet within those hard numbers are practical levers. Men who strongly felt they received warm, respectful affection from a father or father figure were nearly half as likely to perpetrate IPV later. That's not about father presence; it's about the quality of care boys see and absorb. We translate that insight into real-world steps: father-inclusive perinatal care, concrete coaching on warmth and de-escalation, and programs that treat caregiving as core to men's health. We also dig into mental health pathways without reducing IPV to mental illness. Men with moderate or severe depressive symptoms were significantly more likely to use IPV later, and men with suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts carried elevated risk independent of depression. We explore how anger, externalizing behaviors, and coercive control intersect with distress, and why services must protect partners while caring for the suicidal person. Clinicians get a roadmap: use screenings as early-warning signals, educate on escalation, build coping skills, and connect men to support before behavior hardens into harm. Finally, we highlight the quiet power of social support, which lowered the odds of IPV onset, and we make the case for policy that rebuilds men's community ties and includes fathers from day one. Healthier men mean safer families and stronger communities. If you care about preventing violence, ending loneliness, and improving men's mental health, this conversation points to integrated solutions you can act on today. If this resonated, follow the show, share with a friend, and leave a review to help others find it. Through courage, community support, and sheer determination, she escaped and built something extraordinary — Warriors Way Forward, an advocacy organization pushing for trauma-informed policing and systemic reform for domestic violence survivors. Her story is one of unimaginable pain turned into purpose — a reminder that even in the darkest places, warriors rise.✅ Check SEIU West✅ Wellness News✅ Bunny Hugs and Mental Health✅ Parenting in the StormChelsea's linksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/17oZzziCTa/?mibextid=wwXIfrNew's publicationshttps://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/edmonton-woman-says-police-didnt-take-domestic-violence-case-seriouslyhttps://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/domestic-abuse-femicide-edmonton-alberta=============Find Donna on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/donna.gilchrist.794Support the showCheck out the speakeasy podcast Follow Daniel Unmanageable on Facebook Follow Project Sparky We've got fresh merch and it's amazing! Send us a textHost Andrea Atherton is joined by Danielle Young, founder of Inspired Action Wellness, whose lived experience and professional expertise illuminate the healing journey from trauma and domestic violence to emotional sovereignty and self-respect. Nicole's transformation began with one brave decision: to finally trust the voice inside that whispered she deserved more. Her healing journey, marked by nervous system recovery, deep self-reflection, and rebuilding her sense of self, opened her heart to guiding other women out of the shadows of their own relational pain. Together, their stories remind us that breaking free is not a single moment, but a series of courageous steps toward self-honoring truth. This episode invites listeners into an exploration of toxic relationships, not only the intimate partnerships that leave women depleted, but also the societal conditioning that teaches them to overextend, overgive, and overwrite their own needs to be “good” partners. From a young age, women receive messages that their worth is tied to caretaking, emotional labor, and the quiet management of relationship harmony. These roles create exhaustion, self-abandonment, and the painful belief that suffering is simply part of love. In this conversation, we expose these pressures with compassion, offering clarity and encouragement to those ready to step out of old expectations and reclaim their inherent worth.Throughout this episode, Andrea and Danielle explore how cultural narratives, family patterns, and relational trauma intersect to shape how women show up in love, often at their own expense. They dismantle the myth that endurance is admirable and instead elevate the importance of self-trust, boundaries, and emotional safety. Listeners will leave with a sense of validation, renewed strength, and the understanding that healing is not only possible but transformative. This conversation invites every woman who has ever felt drained, silenced, or unseen to reclaim her voice, her boundaries, and the freedom to create relationships that honor who she truly is.30-minute Consultation with Andrea https://www.andreaatherton.com/booking-calendarAndrea Atherton Websitehttps://www.andreaatherton.com/Love Anarchy Websitehttps://www.andreaatherton.com/podcasthttps://loveanarchypodcast.buzzsprout.comLove Anarchy Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/loveanarchypodcast/Andrea Atherton Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/andreaatherton-17/

The statistics related to domestic violence are sobering, but the story behind them is even more complex—and too often misunderstood. In this episode, we dig into how popular frameworks for understanding domestic violence took hold and how survivors play a role in shaping those frameworks - and thereby enhancing our understanding of abuse. Our guests, Melissa Scaia and Dr. Lisa Young Larance, bring decades of frontline practice, research, and program design to this conversation. Melissa explains how the Duluth Model emerged from listening sessions, and why anger management fails when entitlement—not emotion—is the root of abuse. Lisa introduces the “arrest web,” showing how coercive partners weaponize preferred arrest policies and police interviews, leading to survivors over confessing while abusers stay calm and quiet. We examine plea pressures, court silencing, criminalized survivors and the ripple effects of probation and child protection that can replicate intimate harm. We also discuss how oppression theory and intersectionality help to explain why women of color are arrested more and believed less, regardless of stand-your-ground or duty-to-retreat frameworks. Practical takeaways include better police questioning, expert-informed court processes, and agency support that moves beyond the victim–offender binary to truly increase safety and autonomy.
