Katie Schlott spent 20 years in innovation — running experiments, iterating, testing what works. So when she realized her professional network had quietly gone dark during the years she was deep in parenting, she did what any good strategist would do: she designed an experiment.Day raves. Pop-up dinners in strangers' homes. Perfume making fundraisers. Online Slack communities. Wonder Woman dinners. A volunteer board for women's health research. She tried all of it, wrote about it for Inc Magazine, and then came back on AND/BOTH to talk through what she actually found. The conversation covers the new rules of networking, why smaller rooms build realer connections, how parents in particular need to rethink the whole model, and what happens when you decide to build the community you can't find. This week, we are sharing an historic conversation among Ohio comic book royalty: Prolific, award-winning creators Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko. The conversation was moderated by Mike Sangiacomo, one of the Founders of the Siegel and Shuster Society. Recorded live on July 11, 2026, at the Cleveland Public Library as part of the weekend-long Icons Fest held in conjunction with the Icons in Ink: The Jewish Comics Experience exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (on display until August 23, 2026). Growing up together in Northeast Ohio, Bendis and Andreyko first teamed up as friends to create the true crime comic book series Torso, the story of the "Torso Murders" in Cleveland in the 1930s when Eliot Ness was the city's Safety Director. Their wide-ranging conversation included stories about their early collaboration and the on-going challenge of bringing Torso to the screen, their storied careers in the comic book and entertainment industries, and Cleveland Public Library's role in Bendis's decision to go to DC to write for Superman. Brian Michael Bendis was born in Cleveland, took classes at Cleveland Institute of Art, and did work for several Cleveland-area newspapers and magazines in his early career. He has co-created characters like Miles Morales, Jessica Jones, and dozens of others that populate the Marvel, DC and all-new original universes. He is a New York Times bestseller and has won numerous awards for his work, including multiple Eisner Awards and a Peabody for Jessica Jones. Bendis was Executive Producer of the Academy Award winning hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Bendis' fabled move to DC Entertainment after nearly two decades at Marvel made international headlines, making his DC debut in the landmark Action Comics 1000. Bendis continues to be a prolific creator, producer, Marc Andreyko grew up in Mentor, graduated from Mentor High School, and co-created the character Kate Spencer/Manhunter for DC and was the original writer on Wonder Woman '77. He has written comics for Dark Horse, DC, IDW, Image, and Marvel. Michael Sangiacomo is a long-time writer of articles on Superman and the comics industry for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In 2006, he penned an article that urged Cleveland to embrace the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and this led to the creation of the Siegel and Shuster Society of which he was a founding board member. Sangiacomo has also taught comic book history at Case Western Reserve University and is a comics writer himself. In This Episode: Brian Michael Bendis Jinxworld: Brian Michael Bendis (official site) The Peabody Awards ceremony where Bendis was called “the original hero” for his creation of Jessica Jones ‘I'd Have Been a Fool Not to Try Everything': PW Talks with Brian Michael Bendis (Publishers Weekly, 2026) Marc Andreyko DC Comics Press Release for Love Is Love (2016) Marc Andreyko talks comic anthology Love Is Love (Entertainment Weekly, 2017) Supergirl & Superman Unite Against Krypton's Killers (ScreenRant.com, 2019) Michael Sangiacomo Cleveland, the True Birthplace of Superman (Smithsonian Magazine, 2010) Cleveland Torso Murders The Torso Killer: Cleveland's Lingering Mystery from Cleveland Public Library Cleveland Torso Murders (aka The Kingsbury Run Murders) from the Cleveland Police Museum Torso Murders from Encyclopedia of Cleveland History Siegel and Shuster Society (including information about the Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster Superman Plaza) Telling Lies in America (film by writer Joe Eszterhas (who also grew up in Ohio) mentioned in the conversation) Underexposed! For years, Aquaman was one of DC Comics' most misunderstood heroes, weighed down by outdated stereotypes and pop culture jokes. Then Geoff Johns completely reinvented the King of Atlantis with a critically acclaimed run that restored Arthur Curry as one of DC's greatest icons. In this video, we break down how Geoff Johns' Aquaman transformed the character, from embracing the classic jokes to rebuilding Atlantis, introducing memorable new villains like the Trench, redefining Aquaman's relationships, and reminding readers why he belongs alongside Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as one of DC's premier heroes. We also discuss the lasting impact of Johns' run on modern Aquaman stories and why it remains the definitive starting point for new readers. If you're a fan of DC Comics, Aquaman, or comic book history, this is a discussion you won't want to miss.Thank you so much for watching and be sure to share the stream! Grab your cape and your cold one, because Shayne and Jay are suiting up for a DC Universe deep dive. Round 322 is a Redux of the classic BT40, and these two self-proclaimed experts (their words) are ready to settle the score between the DC and Marvel movie universes. Spoiler: Wonder Woman wins everything.Topics include:Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, and the Zod controversyBatman v Superman and why Gal Gadot saved the whole movieSuicide Squad, Jared Leto's divisive Joker, and Margot Robbie's scene-stealing Harley QuinnWhy DC rushed their cinematic universe and paid for itWhere Wonder Woman ranks among Marvel movies**Round 322**~~~~~~~**Support the Show on Patreon!**Want more Beer Thursday in your life? It helps more people find the show, and honestly, it makes us feel like superheroes.~~~~~~~Here's what our house elf, Artie (not Archie), says about this round:**DC Movies, Cold Beers, and Big Opinions**Shayne and Jay are back with a Round Redux, revisiting one of their earliest deep dives into the DC Extended Universe. And yes, they are expertise. They even discovered a hidden Marvel movie once. Nobody else figured that out.**Man of Steel gets some love.**Jay is a lifelong Superman fan, and he gives Henry Cavill major props for making the role his own without trying to copy Christopher Reeve. The bus rescue scene, the weight of Clark Kent's childhood, and yes, the controversial ending with General Zod all get the Beer Thursday treatment.**Batman v Superman? Mixed feelings.**Jay basically calls it a decent Batman movie that Superman happened to show up in. Shayne enjoyed it because he is easily entertained. Both agree that Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman entrance alone was worth the price of admission.**Suicide Squad and the Joker problem.**Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Brilliant. Jared Leto as the Joker? Not so much. The guys give full credit where it's due and move on quickly.**The big question: Did DC rush it?**Shayne makes a sharp point. Marvel spent years building up to the Avengers. DC threw everyone into the same movie by film number two. The game was not allowed to come to them.**Wonder Woman stands alone.**Jay calls it his favorite DC movie and says it comes close to Marvel caliber. Where exactly it ranks among Marvel films is a question that will require its own round.Part 2 is coming. Whenever that is.~~~~~~~Disclosure: I don't really have a house elf. Artie is AI. Get it? Jace and Rocky break down all 13 DC releases for the week of July 15, 2026. Nightwing #140 brings Psycho Pirate into Dan Watters' Blüdhaven mystery by tying the city's violence to Medusa architecture instead of the Medusa Mask. Wonder Woman #35 works as a Wonder War interlude that retells Diana's origin through Steve Trevor explaining Wonder Woman's history to Trinity. End of Life #6 has Eddie Stallion try to leave Pluto before his reunion with Sophie convinces him to stay while the Menagerie's assassins keep closing in. Batwoman #5 has Kate Kane rescue Alice by removing her mask and reaching her sister directly, while Mother Despina warns that winning may still mean losing. Deathstroke: The Terminator #5 reveals the person behind the attacks on Slade and ends with a threat to Rose Wilson that she may not survive. Absolute Flash #17 ends the Gorilla City story in tragic fashion with the young Grodd caught between loyalty to his father and his bond with Wally. Batman/Superman: World's Finest #53 highlights Dick Grayson's skills as he tries to break Batman and Superman free from Tyrannus Rex's control in Skartaris. Dark Knights of Steel 2 #1 expands the medieval DC world beyond the original kingdoms as Kara is welcomed into Amazonia, Batman remains separated from the League, and Amanda Waller's secret villainy continues to hang over the larger story. New Titans #37 hints at Static joining the team while giving Kid Devil more spotlight and continuing Spoiler's rise into a stronger leadership role. Lobo #5 has the network ordered to bring Lobo back, only for the executive to put a contract on him and send Lip Bomb after the Main Man. Catwoman #89 pushes Selina deeper into her Gotham war with Black Mask while bringing her connection to Carmine Falcone closer to outright confirmation. Superman Unlimited #15 builds on the Ultra Boy reveal by showing Jon Kent's faith in him pay off, while Superwoman's arrival keeps the Earth-3 story from ending cleanly. Absolute Green Arrow #3 shifts further into Black Canary's investigation as the issue reveals Miraclo, Rex Tyler and anti-aging experiments tied to the billionaires being targeted. They also give a rundown of this week's collected editions, reprints and facsimile releases. As always, all books are ranked from top to bottom and each host gives a Book of the Week pick.
Throw out your Dreamstones, because the Binge Buddies are about to wish they could unsee this one. > Welcome back to "Hall of Just Us." This week, Bryan, Matt, Joel, and Ryan are gritting their teeth and wading through what might just be the biggest misstep of the entire franchise: the nearly unwatchable Wonder Woman 1984. How did the team behind one of the DCEU's greatest triumphs deliver such a monumental sophomore slump? The guys are breaking down every baffling creative decision in this neon-tinted disaster. From the highly questionable ethics of Steve Trevor's body-snatching return and Kristen Wiig's descent into Cats-level CGI as Cheetah, to Pedro Pascal screaming at wind tunnels and the bizarre lack of actual Wonder Woman action. We're trying to figure out how this 80s nostalgia trip went so spectacularly wrong. Strap on your golden armor and hit play—we're trying to survive the mall!

Unlimited Leaguers we have two exciting episodes with small team-ups this week. Like Green Arrow, hold on tight because we are going to Tartarus and back. "The Balance" has the Greek gods sending Wonder Woman on a mission to save Hades from Felix Faust. Faust has tricked Tala and inhabited the Annihilator. He went to Tartarus to seek revenge on Hades. After chaining Hades up, he spends his time in the library learning all the dark magic from the books. Wonder Woman knows her weapons will not work. She tries to take Hawkgirl's mace. But ends up enlisting Hawkgirl to help. Before entering Tartarus, Diana's mother fully activates Wonder Woman's armor and lasso. The 2 ladies make their way to Faust. They are whisked away by his magic. They free Hades and the three of them take down Faust. "Double Date" has the Huntress trying to take out Steven Mandragora. He was the man who killed her parents when she was young, as she watched from the closet. But Manhunter had set it up as a test and she failed. He kicks her out of the League. Before she goes, she offers to help The Question if he helps her. He knows she can't help him, but he likes her and wants to help. They track down Mandragora. He is in protective custody of the feds along with Green Arrow and Canary. Mandragora tricks the Arrow and Canary to try and hurt him and get thrown out. The feds are then taken down by Mandragora's thugs. He escapes to the docks. Question and Huntress head there but they are being followed by Arrow and Canary. At the docks, Mandragora is waiting for a ship. It holds his son, who was kidnapped and then rescued. Steven and his son were going to escape. He easily takes out Arrow and Question. Canary's cry shockingly barely phases him! Huntress gets the drop on him but can't kill him because of his son. In the end, she traps him until he can be taken away. The episode closes with Question and Huntress becoming a couple. Witnessing adaptation is one of our great pleasures. How does one transform an audio medium into a visual one? How will the podcast World Beyond Number, from Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, Aabria Iyengar, and Lou Wilson, expand into The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One, courtesy of comic storytellers Jadzia Axelrod and Sarah Webb? When the chance to ponder the thought arose with some of those involved, we jumped at it. There are only days left ot support Worlds Beyond Wonder: The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One via Kickstarter. As of this writing, it's already reached over $1.8 million. The book is happening and will be published through Skybound Entertainment. Join the party in confidence. We spoke with Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, and Lou Wilson about their love of comics and the delight they've discovered in watching Jadzia Axelrod and Sarah Webb bring their story to this medium. We relish the love evident in their play, found in every Worlds Beyond Number episode. We discuss nerdom not as a monolith, but as an endless pebbly beach. This episode was a fantastic surprise, but not as big a surprise as the email we recently received that threw our lives into turmoil (which is the topic of today's introduction). Jill Lepore is a Harvard professor and contributing writer to the New Yorker. Her books include The Secret History of Wonder Woman, New York Burning, These Truths: A History of the United States, and her latest, We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution – and instant New York Times bestseller. This year is the semi-quincentennial of the United States of America and, as Lepore points out, also the anniversary of constitutionalism. There's no better guide through American history than Jill Lepore, and it is a delight to spend an hour in civics class led by someone who readily references Mel Brooks and AI in a discussion about the Constitution. Lepore is interviewed by OPB's Geoff Norcross, host of All Things Considered. They discuss Lepore's Amendments Project, which catalogues all the amendments that have been proposed throughout history, and explore why it is so difficult to amend the Constitution and the story of how some of the amendments we do have (there are 27, including the 10 in the Bill of Rights) came to be. They talk about originalism and the pessimism of the framers, who believed that any man would be a tyrant if given power, and set up the checks and balances in our Constitution to give the legislature, the court, and the people – with the vote – the power to oust a tyrant. A few notes to listeners just for clarity: It's mentioned “what is Congress doing right now,” this was during the November 2025 government shut down. Jill is not in the room with the audience; Jill was unable to join us in Portland due to a last-minute travel issue (related to the shut down, frankly), but very gamely came in on video while Geoff Norcross and the audience were in the theater. Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper '41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. As a wide-ranging and prolific essayist, and winner of the PEN prize for the Art of the Essay, Lepore writes about American history, law, literature, and politics. She is the author of many award-winning books, including the international bestseller, These Truths: A History of the United States (2018). Her newest book is We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution, which was published this September. As one of the local hosts of OPB's “All Things Considered,” Geoff Norcross shares local and regional stories to audiences of NPR's flagship newsmagazine. Previously, Geoff was the host of OPB's “Morning Edition” for 15 years. He was part of the team that built the program into one of the most listened-to presentations of “Morning Edition” in the country.

No hard sell required with this one. Operation: Iron Coffin #1 is in shops today, courtesy of IDW Publishing. It's concocted by our new favorite comic book dynamic duo, Kenny Porter and Tyrell Cannon (with letterer Shawn Lee). In its pages, you'll see Bram Stoker's Dracula working for the Allies during World War II. Like a bomb, he's dropped from a plane upon a secret Nazi gold train. He lands in the caboose. He proceeds to slaughter his way toward the engine. Many losers are torn limb from limb. Folks have already compared its action to John Wick, but it's more like Game of Death smashed with Snowpiercer. As Dracula works his bloody way down the train, new foes present themselves, boss-level style, and each one represents a different mindset or philosophy. Porter and Cannon excel in the excessive bodily harm, but simmering beneath the violence is a powerful reckoning with the human experience and the darkest depths our species can plunge. In the last few years, we've spent a lot of time pondering vampires, mortals, and their relationship to the soul. How fun to have Kenny Porter and Tyrell Cannon on the podcast this week to discuss bloodsuckers, human monsters, evil, and capital E Evil. This is a full-spoilers conversation about Operation: Iron Coffin #1. Be warned. However, this is kind of an unspoilable book. Nothing we say in this podcast can rob the comic of its visual might. So, listen based on your own spoiler sensitivity. But, seriously, you should just grab the comic the next time you're in the shop. Follow Kenny Porter on Instagram and Bluesky. Tim Conway Jr. Hour -1Happy 250th, everyone — wishing you all a happy and SAFE Independence Day! This hour is straight FIRE. It's fantastic when a comic gives you a jolt. Beast of Borikén, written by Julio Anta and illustrated by Daniel Irizarri, delivers a great prod, stimulating your brain to run numerous scenarios on and off the page. It's the story of a people who've witnessed so much monstrosity at the hands of invaders. It's a story of people finding strength in their neighbors, ancestors, and legends. The first issue is out now, from Dark Horse Comics and Tiny Onion, and we investigate it meaningfully with both storytellers. Set in Puerto Rico, the main character is Loli, an activist protesting an incoming resort, the face of which is yuppy CEO Simon Hunt, who is using every slippery trick in the book to break ground despite opposition. Loli is incensed and focused on stopping the overdevelopment of her ancestral lands, but is her fixation in part because she is avoiding processing a horrendous grief, since her father died alone in a hospital during Hurricane Maria? This week on the podcast, we speak with Julio Anta and Daniel Irizarri about Beast of Borikén, witnessing endless horror, and hope through collective action. We discuss the influence of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and the appeal of monsters. Also, what does it all have to do with Robocop 2? You'll have to make your way through the intro to understand all that. Beast of Borikén #1 is out now from Dark Horse Comics and Tiny Onion. It's written by Julio Anta, illustrated by Daniel Irizarri, colored by Patricio Delpeche, and lettered by Lucas Gattoni. Follow Julio Anta on Instagram and Bluesky. No one is more surprised than we are. Frank Miller, the legendary comics maker behind Daredevil: Born Again, Ronin, Batman: Year One, Sin City, and The Dark Knight Returns, which celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year, joins us this week to discuss his career as he filtered it through his new memoir/self-help book, Push The Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and The Art of Storytelling. His latest creation floored us. Broken into sixteen lessons, Push the Wall sees Frank Miller excavate his past to understand his pursuit of storytelling. He attempts to explain his rebellious nature and a need to throw himself against opposing forces, but in the process, reveals the awesome, unbeatable power of change. He treats the reader as his mentors did, like Neal Adams and Dick Giordano. Push the Wall works not only as motivation for the struggling artist, but also for the struggling human. The aggression and fascination for violence are present, but more importantly, Push the Wall contains a great softness or vulnerability. Frank Miller is not a creator who doubles down on past mistakes; he admits regret and offers encouragement to everyone who must fail to grow. We're beyond delighted to have Frank Miller on the podcast. We discuss how “The City” was the first to change him, why The Dark Knight Returns should not be the template for all Batman stories, and whether or not Robocop 2 is an essential ingredient in his vocation. Push the Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and the Art of Storytelling arrives in bookstores everywhere on July 14th. Make sure you're following Frank Miller on Instagram and his website. For our final look at Supergirl, we're returning to the DCEU. And also Earth 89, Earth 789, Earth 30, Earth 66, Earth 203, Earth 789, and a reboot. That's right, we're taking a look at The Flash (2023), which aimed to be both a love letter to and the end of the Zack Snyder DC Universe, while also serving as an introduction to James Gunn's DCU. All your favourites are back: Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, and Adam West as Batman, along with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, a pretty solid interpretation of Supergirl from Sasha Calle, and Ezra Miller's The Flash, I guess, if you're into that kind of thing. And it's awful.
