*) Russia sanctions dozens of US citizens Russia's Foreign Ministry has said that it is imposing sanctions on 61 US nationals. It said the move was being taken "in response to the ever-expanding US sanctions against Russian political and public figures, as well as representatives of domestic business." The list includes US officials and former and current top managers of large American companies, such as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, White House communications director Kate Bedingfield and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. *) UK providing Kiev with 'exactly' the right weapons Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the United Kingdom has been providing weapons Kiev needs to fight Russia. Britain, in coordination with the United States, will supply Ukraine with multiple-launch rocket systems that can strike targets up to 80 kilometres away as part of a new UK military aid for Kiev. *) Johnson survives no-confidence vote Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson has narrowly survived a confidence vote instigated by members of his own party. Johnson wins backing of 211 out of 359 Conservative lawmakers, more than simple majority needed to remain in power, but still sees a significant rebellion of 148 MPs. The simmering discontent with Johnson is a result of his participation in illegal parties during the coronavirus lockdown. The so-called Partygate scandal led to a daming report and Johnson becoming the first serving British Prime Minister to have broken the law. *) Iran close to making nuclear bomb The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog says Iran is "very close" to enriching nuclear material to required levels for nuclear weapons. He stressed the need to work with the country to combat its "very ambitious nuclear programme". The IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told journalists in Vienna that there is evidence that suggests Iran is continuing to develop new centrifuges. And, finally… *) Türkiye's Cappadocia hosts 1M tourists Türkiye's globally renowned Cappadocia region in the central Nevsehir province has attracted one million tourists in the first five months of this year. A total of 1.03 million domestic and international visitors came to explore the charming touristic hub, famed for its distinctive fairy chimneys, underground cities, cave hotels, and hot air balloon rides. While it hosted over 1.1 million visitors in the same period of 2019, the number of tourists who visited Cappadocia decreased drastically in 2020, to around 323,000, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Indian OTT industry poised for growth. But are low prices sustainable?

Business Standard Podcast

Another year has been lost to the pandemic, and various sectors such as real estate, hospitality and mobility are counting their losses and making projections of when they're likely to attain their pre-Covid growth levels.  Amid this doom and gloom, the media and entertainment sector presents an encouraging picture. According to a recent report by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Boston Consulting Group, India's media and entertainment industry has revived to pre-Covid levels and is expected to grow to $55-70 bn by 2030 at 10-12% CAGR, driven mainly by strong growth in OTT, gaming, animation and VFX. The report explains that the media and entertainment industry contracted by 10% year-on-year in 2020, its market size decreasing from $26 bn in 2019, to around $24 bn in 2020.  This contraction was mainly due to a decline in advertising revenues across mediums such as print, television and radio.  However, digital led-consumption of OTT services and gaming are now driving the growth, helping the industry grow 12-16% year-on-year in 2021, to a market size of $27 bn.  Today, OTT has a 7-9% market share in India's $27 bn M&E industry. However, by 2030, its market share is expected to increase to 22%-25%. Meanwhile, television's market share will decline from around 35% to 24%.  The growth in the number of Indian households with a Pay TV subscription, such as Tata Sky and Dish TV has more or less stabilised, only growing at 2%.  However, India is seeing a growth of 51% in the number of households with a subscription-based video-on-demand service or SVOD.  This growth in subscription-based OTT services offered by the likes of Netflix, Amazon's Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar can be attributed to the improved internet and smartphone penetration and payment mechanisms. Most importantly, these players have made significant investments in content, pricing innovations and bundling to create niche properties. Notably, streaming giants such as Netflix are offering their India plans at affordable prices, compared to the pricing plans for other geographies. The CII-BCG report explains that the Indian pricing plans of global streaming giants are on average, 70-90% cheaper than their prices for the US market.  Increased market competition, with local OTT players also entering the fray, are driving this reduction in prices for OTT services. And global streaming giants are keeping their fingers crossed.  In 2020, the global executives for Disney+ noted that the company's India offering, Disney+ Hotstar, brought down its global average revenue per user (ARPU). And last year, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that the company was ‘still figuring out the Indian market', also calling it a ‘speculative investment', comparing the Indian market of 2021 with the Japanese and South Korean markets of five years before.  As the experts pointed out, the Indian OTT industry has just started scaling up, and will continue to remain a high volume market. Hence, expect more pricing experiments and bundling of OTT services with your mobile data plans as more global streaming players tap into the Indian market.  Watch video

How Do You Actually Get Things Done? How do you filter through the noise, the constant barrage of images and content thrown at you on a daily basis? Well, let’s jump in and talk about it. Thomas Joyner here with Business on Purpose! I read a statistic this week that blew my mind recently! “On average, over 500 hours of content is added to YouTube... EVERY MINUTE!!!” That’s outrageous, over 500 hours of content is uploaded to YouTube every minute. That means you can never catch up.   Another statistic for you... Netflix currently has 200 shows and movies under production to be added to their streaming platform to be added during 2021. That means you could binge-watch a new series (not individual show) or movie every day for almost 7 mos and still not watch the same thing twice. That is mind-blowing! In fact, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently was quoted as saying that their “biggest competitor moving forward will be an individuals sleep!”   Think about that for a second, your attention is being fought for day in and day out...every second of the day. But your attention is being attacked not just to keep you from sleep, but to keep you from working hard, spending time with your family, being productive, getting healthy, every aspect of your life is being fought for by outside influences. So how do you fight back? How do you filter through all of the noise and begin to implement things in your business or organization that truly can change it! Well, it starts with putting down the distractions for a bit and making time for what truly matters most.  I was sitting in a coaching call with several of our clients last week and several of them all sat there and said, Thomas, it’s so hard to just find time to get started! I have great intentions of doing the Roadmap, but I just get caught up and stuck and I look up and the day or week is gone! So, we pointed them back to the Weekly Schedule. It’s why we implement this with every business owner we work with. Until you can dictate what your schedule is, you don’t stand a chance to move past the chaos. You have to set a time, EVERY WEEK, to work on your business. We call it dental chair time… Think about the last time you were at the dentist with that hygienist all up in your mouth cleaning...you don’t ask them to stop so you can answer an email or take a call or put out a fire. NO! You’re in a dentist appointment. And here’s the funny thing, we believe that a dentist appt is a better excuse for being off the radar than taking time to work on and build our business. It’s no different! Set time in your schedule every week to implement. Imagine the clarity you would have if you took 2 hours a week as time to get perspective on what is going on? Imagine how freeing if you just cut your phone off or put it on do not disturb and closed that email tab at the top of your browser to give yourself enough time to filter through some of the noise and make game-changing decisions about what you want to implement. Chaos is fighting for your attention! There’s no doubt about it. The question is can you push the pause button on the distractions long enough to do something about that. To cut through all of the awesome content that’s being thrown at you, to process it, and figure out what you’re going to implement in your business. As Scott loves to say and Joe Calloway made famous, “Vision, without implementation, is hallucination.”  Don’t fall into the trap of getting distracted, but build your week up the way you want it to look, and then DO NOT WAVER from it. Implement, implement, implement. It’s the only way to take your business where you want it to go.

Competition, content, and culture. They’re the three Cs of Netflix’s unbeatable strategy in these so-called “streaming wars.” And you can tell Disney I said unbeatable. But how did the company come to dominate each facet of that strategy? That’s what we’ve set out to learn in this episode of Business Casual with Recode senior correspondent and bona fide Netflix expert Peter Kafka.Peter also co-hosted season 2 of Land of the Giants—it’s a seven-part podcast about Netflix and the impact it’s had on Hollywood and the world.Hosting the podcast on it > writing the book on itThere’s clearly a lot to unpack with Netflix—and with market entrants including Apple TV+, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max, Hulu, and Amazon Prime (to name a few) attempting to unseat it at the head of the video streaming table, Netflix has been left no choice but to dig some deep moats. Thanks to some fortuitous timing as the earliest of early movers in the new era of streaming, a huge multi-billion dollar content budget, and a penchant for treating employees like professional athletes, Netflix did just that.Listen to this episode for the inside scoop on how it all went down—and what goes down next. After you listen, read my column to find out why I disagree with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings: https://column.businesscasual.fm/timing-beats-culture

The History of Computing

Today we're going to cover what many of you do with your evenings: Netflix. Now, the story of Netflix comes in a few stages that I like to call the founding and pivot, the Blockbuster killer,  the streaming evolution, and where we are today: the new era of content. Today Netflix sits at more than a 187 billion dollar market cap. And they have become one of the best known brands in the world. But this story has some pretty stellar layers to it. And one of the most important in an era of eroding (or straight up excavated) consumer confidence is this thought. The IPOs that the dot com buildup created made fast millionaires. But those from the Web 2.0 era made billionaires. And you can see that in the successes of Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. Prelude Hastings founded Pure Software in 1991. They made software that helped other people make… software. They went public in 1995 and merged with Atria, and were acquired the next year by Rational Software - making he and Netflix founder Marc Randolph, well, obsolete. Hastings made investors and himself a lot of money. Which at that point was millions and millions of dollars. So he went on to sit on the State Board of Education and get involved in education. Act I: The Founding and Pivot He and Marc Randolph had carpooled to worked while at Pure Atria and had tossed around a lot of ideas for startups. Randolph landed on renting DVDs by mail. Using the still somewhat new Internet. Randolph would become CEO and Hastings would invest the money to get started. Randolph brought in a talented team from Pure Atria and they got to work using an initial investment of two and a half million dollars in 1997.  But taking the brick and mortar concept that video stores had been successfully using wasn't working. They had figured out how to ship DVDs cheaply, how to sell them (until Amazon basically took that part of the business away), and even how to market the service by inking deals with DVD player manufacturers. The video stores had been slow to adopt DVDs after the disaster they found with laser disk and so the people who made the DVDs saw it as a way to get more people to buy the players. And it was mostly working. But the retention numbers sucked and they were losing money.  So they tinkered with the business model, relentlessly testing every idea. And Hastings came back to take the role of CEO and Randolph stepped into the role of president. One of those tests had been to pivot from renting DVDs to a subscription model. And it worked. They gave customers a free month trial. The subscription and the trial are now all too common. But at the time it was a wildly innovative approach. And people loved it. Especially those who could get a DVD the next day. They also gave Netflix huge word of mouth. In 1999 they were at 110,000 subscribers. Which is how I first got introduced to them in 2000, when they were finally up to 300,000 subscribers. I had no clue, but they were already thinking about streaming all the way back then.  But they had to survive this era. And as is often the case when there's a free month that comes at a steep cost, Netflix was bleeding money. And running out of cash. They planned to go IPO. But because the dot com bubble had burst, cash was becoming hard to come by. They had been well funded, taking a hundred million dollars by the time they got to a series E. And they were poised for greatness. But there was that cash crunch. And a big company to contend with: Blockbuster. With 9,000 stores, $6b in revenue, tens of thousands of employees, and millions of rentals being processed a month, Blockbuster was the king of the video rental market.  The story goes that Hastings got the Netflix idea from a late fee. So they would do subscriptions. But they had sold DVDs and done rentals first. And really, they found success because of the pivot, wherever that pivot came from. And in fact, Hastings and Randolph had flown to Texas to try and sell Netflix to Blockbuster. Pretty sure Blockbuster wishes they'd jumped on that.  Which brings us to Act II: The Blockbuster Killer.  Managing to keep enough cash to make it through the growth, they managed to go public in 2002 and finally got profitable in 2003. Soon they would be shipping over a million DVDs every single day. They quickly rose through word of mouth. That one day shipping was certainly a thing. They pumped money into advertising and marketing. And they continued a meteoric growth.  They employed growth hacks and they researched a lot of options for the future, knowing that technology changes were afoot. Randolf investigated opening kiosks with Mitch Lowe. Netflix wouldn't really be interested in doing so, and Randolph would leave the company in 2002 on good terms. Wealthy after the companies successful IPO. And Lowe took the Video Droid concept of a VHS rental vending machine to DVDs after Netflix abandoned it, and went to Redbox, which had been initially started by McDonalds in 2003. Many of the ideas he and Randolf tested in Vegas as a part of Netflix would be used and by 2005 Redbox would try to sell to Netflix and Blockbuster.  But again, Blockbuster failed to modernize. They didn't have just one shot at buying Netflix, Reed Hastings flew out there four times to try and sell the company to Blockbuster. Blockbuster launched their own subscription service in 2004 but it was flawed and there was bad press around late fees and other silly missteps. Meanwhile Netflix was growing fast.  Netflix shipped the billionth DVD in 2007. And by 2007, there were more Reboxes than Blockbusters and by 2011 the kiosks accounted for half of the rental market. Blockbuster was finally forced to file for bankruptcy in 2010, after being a major name brand for 25 years.  Netflix was modernizing though. Not with Kiosks but they were already beginning to plan for streaming. And a key to their success, as in the early days was relentless self improvement and testing every little thing, all the time. They took their time and did it right.  Broadband was on the rise. People had more bandwidth and were experimenting with streaming music at work. Netflix posted earnings of over a hundred million dollars in 2009. But they were about to do something special.  And so Act III: The Streaming Revolution The streaming world came online in the early days of the Internet when Severe Tire Damage streamed the first song out of Xerox PARC in 1993. But it wasn't really until YouTube came along in 2005 that streaming video was getting viable. By 2006 Google would acquire YouTube, which was struggling with over a million dollars a month in bandwidth fees and huge legal issues with copywritten content. This was a signal to the world that streaming was ready. I mean, Saturday Night Live was in, so it must be real!  Netflix first experimented with making their own content in 2006 with a film production division they called Red Envelope Films. They made over a dozen movies but ultimately shut down, giving Netflix a little focus on another initiative before they came back to making their own content. Netflix would finally launch streaming media in 2007, right around the time they shipped that billionth DVD. This was the same year Hulu launched out of AOL, Comcast, Facebook, MSN, and Yahoo. But Netflix had a card up it's sleeve. Or a House of Cards, the first show they produced, which launched in 2013. Suddenly, Netflix was much, much more than a DVD service. They were streaming movies, and creating content. Wildly popular content. They've produced hundreds of shows now in well over a dozen languages. 2013 also brought us Orange is the New Black, another huge success. They started off with a whole Marvel universe in 2015 with Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and tied that up with The Defenders. But along the way we got The Crown, Narcos and the almost iconic at this point Stranger Things. Not to mention Bojack Horseman, Voltron, and the list just goes on and on.  That era of expansion would include more than just streaming. They would finally expand into Canada in 2010, finally going international. They would hit 20 million subscribers in 2011. By 2012 they would be over 25 million subscribers. By 2013 they would exceed 33 million. In 2014 they hit 50 million. By the end of 2015 they were at almost 70 million. 2016 was huge, as they announced an expansion into 130 new international territories at CES. And the growth continued. Explosively. At this point, despite competition popping up everywhere Netflix does over 20 billion a year in revenue and has been as instrumental in revolutionizing the world as anyone.  That competition now includes Disney Plus, Apple, Hulu, Google, and thousands of thousands of podcasts and home spun streamers, even on Twitch. All battling to produce the most polarizing, touching, beautiful, terrifying, or mesmerizing content.  Oh and there's still regular tv I guess…  Epilogue So Y2K. The dot com bubble burst. And the overnight millionaires were about to give way to something new. Something different. Something on an entirely different scale.  As with many of the pre-crash dot com companies, Netflix had initially begun with a pretty simple idea. Take the video store concept, where you payed per-rental. And take it out of brick and mortar and onto the internets. And if they had stuck with that, we probably wouldn't know who they are today. We would probably be getting our content from a blue and yellow box called Blockbuster. But they went far beyond that, and in the process, they changed how we think of that model. And that subscription model is how you now pay for almost everything, including software like Microsoft Office.  And Netflix continued to innovate. They made streaming media mainstream. They made producing content a natural adjacency to a streaming service. And they let millions cut the cord from cable and get into traditional media. They became a poster child for the fact that out of the dot com bubble and Great Recession, big tech companies would go from making fast millionaires to a different scale, fast billionaires! As we move into a new post COVID-19 era, a new round of change is about to come. Nationalism is regrettably becoming more of a thing. Further automation and adoptions of new currencies may start to disrupt existing models even further. We have so much content we have to rethink how search works. And our interpersonal relationships will be forever changed from these months in isolation. Many companies are about to go the way of Blockbuster. Including plenty that have been around much, much longer than they were. But luckily, companies like Netflix are there for us to remind us that any company can innovate like in a multi-act play.  And we owe them our thanks, for that. - and because what the heck else would we do stuck in quarantine, right?!?! So to the nearly 9,000 people that work at Netflix we 167 million plus subscribers thank you. For revolutionizing content distribution, revolutionizing business models, and for the machine learning and other technological advancements we didn't even cover in this episode. You are lovely.  And thank you listeners, for abandoning binge watching Tiger King long enough to listen to this episode of the History of Computing Podcast. We are so lucky to have you. Now get back to it!

You may not have heard of Patty McCord directly, but if you're in HR or recruitment, you'll have likely heard of her work. Patty was Chief Talent Officer at Netflix for 14 years and co-author (alongside Netflix CEO Reed Hastings) of the infamous Netflix culture deck. This document was one of the first slides on Slideshare and is probably one of the most viewed documents up there too. Patty has worked in many different tech companies in and around Silicon Valley, and today she  is often in the media with interviews and articles, as well as speaking at CEO forums and business schools. But it is her work that she did during her time at Netflix that she is most well known for. While at Netflix she abolished performance reviews as well as challenged the need for policies. Patty firmly believes people come to work as fully formed adults with a desire to make an impact and be proud of what they do. “It starts with the idea that people are adults and that they're smart, right. And so what I mean by that is, people who have demonstrated the ability to make a commitment and follow through, I mean, that's sort of baseline 101 for adult behaviour.”In her chat with Dom, they cover some of the elements of the culture deck, A-players and how to hire them, how to hire and build teams, what the main job of a team leader or manager is, and how to exit staff from an organisation with dignity and fairness. On today's podcast:How the Netflix culture deck ended up on SlideshareThe difference between hiring adults and hiring childrenWhy she hates the term ‘empowerment'Why you should build a team for the future, not the nowAbolish the annual performance reviewLearn how to let people goLinks:https://www.slideshare.net/reed2001/culture-1798664https://jobs.netflix.com/culture

The hastily passed law signed by Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday grants Californians the right to know the what, why and how of how companies are collecting and sharing their data. The new law, while it also grants consumers the right to tell companies to delete their data, isn’t as extensive as the EU’s new Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which everyone’s still trying to figure out. But Disney is going to need to divest Fox’s 22 regional sports networks within 90 days after it closes. Rival Comcast is still in the running, though. Its $65 billion bid is still on the table. Facebook says it released even more data  In a 700-page set of replies to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Facebook acknowledged that it shared user data with 52 companies after it stopped doing so in 2015 with most others. The company says it has ended 38 of the 52 partnerships. Companies with which Facebook continues to share data are Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung and Alibaba. But lawmakers are obviously concerned given the ongoing fallout from the Cambridge Analytica debacle in which the company shared the data of some 87 million Facebook users which were used to help Republican candidates. The company says that Jonathan Friedland used the word at least twice. In a letter, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the 7-year Netflix veteran used the word in a meeting about offensive speech in an inappropriate and offensive way. Friedland then used the word again with two black employees in the HR department who were tasked with dealing with the incident. Dr Skott Ahn is LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer "With webOS, LG has simplified② the TV experience again. We've simplified the way you connect your TV, the way you switch between content and input and the way you discover new content and services." Content partners set to supply LG televisions with new Ultra HD, 4K content include Youtube, Amazon and online steaming service Netflix, who say they will be supplying US television drama series "House of Cards"③ in the high-quality format. LG is also showcasing its new curved smart phone, the LG G Flex, which it describes as its most advanced smart phone yet. Sony is taking the wraps off its latest high definition④ televisions at this year's CES. The company's 2014 announcements include a three-product line with 4K resolution⑤. Sony's Mike Fasulo says the X900B model took center stage at the event, one that Sony used to hype not only its television line, but its entire video line, from acquisition to display. "From our professional 4K cameras to our cinema projectors⑥, Sony has been and continues to be at the forefront of original 4K content creation." Sony says the X900B 4K Ultra HDTV offers improved 4K picture capabilities and allows for content to be streamed wirelessly with built-in⑦ Wi-Fi. High-definition audio is also being shown off, with Fasulo boasting the benefits that Sony provides with its latest technology. Fasulo says 4K resolution is a short hand way to describe devices or content that has 4,000 pixels. "High-res audio offers three to seven times the information and higher fidelity⑧ than traditional CDs, delivering sound the way the artist meant it to be heard." Meanwhile, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced that the media company's popular "House of Cards" series will be streamed over the net in full 4K resolution.
