[Program Note: Bud S. passed away shortly after the release of this interview in 2022 at age 94. He had 44 Years of sobriety when he died. This interview may be the last time Bud shared his extraordinary story, but it lives on in the hearts those who knew him.] My guest on today's show is Bud S., a man of remarkable longevity and long-term sobriety. At 94 years old, his 44 years of sobriety is the perfect backdrop for the story of a life well-lived through the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Though he started drinking later than most, his disease quickly branched off an alcoholic family tree that claimed the lives of his father and both sisters. Like many alcoholics, Bud built a successful career despite his growing addiction to alcohol. For a long time, he managed to keep his drinking confined to evenings and weekends with his wife and friends who shared in the glow of his good cheer. But as his drinking escalated, that glow turned into a glare from the harsh reality that he had become an alcoholic. Early attempts at rehab and short stints in AA were minimally effective as he allowed the differences in his drinking life to dominate similarities with other alcoholics. His downhill slide, abetted by more frequent binges and blackouts, culminated in expulsion from his home by his wife. Thoroughly licked by the disease, Bud came all the way in and sat all the way down in AA at the age of 49. He has never left. Bud's exceptionally long and illustrious life in sobriety contains all of the elements familiar to recovering alcoholics whose lives have been enriched by AA. His regular attendance at many meetings, combined with non-stop service work that includes sponsoring other men and participating in interventions, have made him indispensable to the groups he serves. His friendly disposition and welcoming spirit make it easy for newcomers and old-timers alike to comfortably join him in the center of the Program. At 94, Bud's well-seasoned message of hope rings fresh and true on a daily basis. And though the audio quality of this interview was slightly affected by a glitchy Zoom, I believe you'll find Bud's story immediately enthralling and quite easy to listen to. Seahawks OTAs kick off this week, so as the team gets together there are some key storylines and nuggets that we're going to be on the lookout for. The rookie form of Grey Zabel is high on that list along with the focus on quarterback and what we're hearing about Sam Darnold, versus Drew Lock versus Jalen Milroe. Could Lock's experience with this team give him an edge over the other two quarterbacks in the way they interact as a team? Defensively, we talk about some of the key things we want to hear about along the defensive line, despite their inability to put on pad and bang around like we see in the preseason. List season creep has begun. Usually it waits until after OTAs and the mandatory minicamp, but we have a couple lists where Sam Darnold makes an appearance. We talk about where he ranks out on the PFF list of 32 NFL starting quarterbacks and the top 10 most risky free agent signings. We also talk about why two former Seahawks are above Darnold on both lists and how it may lead the way for how the media views this Seahawks roster until the start of the season. In the second half of the show, we discuss a few of the rules changes. The NFL has expanded the number of plays that can be reviewed, but only if a flag is thrown. Touchbacks are now coming out to the 35-yard line. If teams and kickers don't start putting the ball in the landing zone, should the NFL penalize teams the same as when they kick it out of bounds? In the Do Better segment, we get into one other list that calls out one move the Seahawks should make and Amazon is password protecting the ability for people to change the time on their devices. Closing the show with Better at Life, we talk about the scientists behind the James Webb telescope and a former Seahawks player who is now an author on the subject of gardening. And I primarily do police officer and municipality defense for critical incidents. So a lot of the things that happen across the country. After the fact, the lawsuit is filed, I'll be brought in to re-interview witnesses, talk to the officers, and try to mitigate what's going on with the lawsuit. And if the officer is in trouble with that as well, we'll represent the officer to try to make sure that we hopefully can clear him of any wrongdoing. You also, now how'd you get involved with this media business, the TV business? I got contacted throughout my career because of LA and some of the cases that we've handled in the past. It's media-friendly between law enforcement. So when I left about five years ago, A producer who had known a friend of mine had given this guy my name about, yeah, Don's had some unusual cases and worked this and that and whatever. Our dirty pair of Dirty Pair episodes continues this week with a look at the theatrical feature film and cavalcade of OVAs that followed in the wake of the original TV series. Dirty Pair was so popular on the home video market that it got two feature-length OVAs – 1985's Affair of Nolandia and 1995's Flight 005 Conspiracy – and an entire ‘second season' of 10 TV-length episodes, known as Dirty Pair 2. There is some fantastic stuff among these home video releases, but the real highlight today is the 1986 feature film, Project Eden, one of the most spectacularly produced anime of the 1980s that feels a lot more like a feature-length music video than it does a conventional narrative. THE REBEL WATCHERS of the Book of 1 Enoch were described as “burning mountains” in a chasm so vast there was no end to the height or the depth. These were identified by the archangel Uriel as “the angels who mingled with the women,” who will remain there until the final judgment. This is consistent with the description of the sinful angels who are “kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day” (Jude 6). We discuss other biblical references to angels as mountains and “stones of fire,” as in Ezekiel 28:14. The father-god of Mesopotamia, called Enlil, Dagan (Dagon), Assur, and El depending on location, was called “Great Mountain,” and his temples in Babylon and Assyria were called “House of the Mountain.” We think this is the “great mountain” in Zechariah 4:7, and the custom of calling angels burning mountains suggests that the “great mountain, burning with fire,” the second trumpet judgment of Revelation 8:8, is an angelic being, not a space rock. The other fascinating aspect of Enoch's journey to the west and north is that he reached these spirits after crossing the Great Sea. While that's probably a reference to the Mediterranean, it also suggests that the burning mountains were the Watchers who rebelled and compelled God to banish them to the Abyss when He sent the Flood of Noah. Introduction: I don't care what's under the hood of my car. I'm pretty sure there's an engine in there, but I'll be damned if I know what it's about. And frankly, I don't care. I wanna go fast when I need to and slow when I don't. That's it. Good to go. Some guys get off on knowing every detail about their engine. The compression ratios, the torque curves, the whole mechanical circle jerk. They're the same guys who can tell you the exact temperature their bourbon was aged at or why their guitars, pickups are superior to every other pickup ever manufactured. But here's what 30 years in the trenches of the diamond business has taught me. Buying an engagement ring isn't about becoming an expert. It's about doing something incredible for someone you love. Somewhere between the YouTube rabbit holes about ideal cut grades and the forums full of guys comparing certification numbers like fantasy football stats, we've lost the plot. You are not here because you woke up thinking, man, I really need to learn about crystalline structures today. You're here because you found someone who makes your, he beat faster and you want to do this right? The problem is the diamond industry has turned what should be one of life's most romantic moments into something that. Feels like studying for a final exam you never signed up for. And that's why I wrote this book, not to turn you into some diamond grading savant, but to give you just enough knowledge to work with someone who actually knows their stuff. Think of it as your cheat sheet for navigating this world while keeping your sanity intact. And yes, I'm mostly addressing the guys buying rings for their girlfriends in this book. But if you're buying for your boyfriend or you're a woman buying for your girlfriend, the advice works just the same. The diamond doesn't give a damn who's wearing it and neither do I. What matters is what that ring symbolizes between two people who found something that's worth keeping. I've spent years watching guys walk into my store looking like they're about to face a firing squad. Armed with printouts of diamond specs and enough anxiety to power laws Vegas for a week. There are shell-shocked veterans of a war they never needed to fight. . So here's what I'm going to do. I'm gonna cut through the bullshit and tell you what actually matters. Not the marketing hype or technical jargon, but the real deal, the stuff that makes a difference when you're standing there ring in hand, heart pounding about to ask the biggest question of your life. We'll cover just enough technical stuff to keep you informed, but more importantly, we'll talk about finding someone you can trust to handle the heavy lifting. Because this isn't about becoming a diamond expert, as I've said, it's about making a moment unforgettable. There are plenty of great professionals who live. Growing up in a home fractured by alcoholism, Bret B. had first-hand exposure to his father's untreated disease. The physical and verbal abuse was a lot for child to handle. Unfortunately, any solace or comfort that might have been offered by Bret's mother was extinguished by a stroke she suffered in her early 30s (when Bret was 8) which left her paralyzed and unable to speak.  Like many alcoholics who survived traumatic childhoods, Brett found booze in his teens. It helped him through any troubles he faced in high school and college. As a functional alcohol abuser, he somehow managed to earn a master's degree and a high paying job right out of college. But the luster of his early achievements wore off quickly as drinking became a enslaving part of his life. Many lost jobs and two divorces provided overwhelming evidence that his life was self-destructing at a rapid pace. By the time he finally made it into AA at age 35, Bret had created a mountain of wreckage which appeared insurmountable. Fortunately, he found a strong AA community that was committed to helping the newcomer. With the help of the fellowship and a wise sponsor, Bret immersed himself in the Program. Going to meetings, working the 12 Steps, and sponsoring other men became a vital part of his life. Today, as a dedicated and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bret has made the Program central in his life. The gifts of sobriety continue to materialize in both his personal and professional lives. I feel that Bret's story, brightened by continuous involvement in AA, is one every alcoholic should hear.
