46: Chapter 44. A Message from El-ahrairah Scripted by John Ruths and Newell Fisher and is narrated, recorded and edited by Newell Fisher. The pre-chapter quote is from a fairly well-known book about crusader castles.  So, not 'normal' European castles but those built or occupied mostly in the Middle East.  The quote clearly lines up with what's going on at Watership Down.  As our heroes have essentially dug themselves in, they are kind of stuck listening to the activities above.  The chapter opens after the passage of some time from the end of the previous chapter, with the Efrafan attack on WD having started. Speedwell is reporting to Hazel-rah that he no longer hears the sounds of digging.  We then switch and get the point of view of the Efrafans who are surprised to see how many holes there are at this warren.  Woundwort counters his unsettled rabbits with his own brand of logic.  The WD rabbits have left themselves open to attack with so many holes, rather than the other way around and are not in a position of dominance.  Vervain is starting to stand out as a rabbit who is used to being the bully at home rather than the bully far away.  Only Campion and Groundsel seem to be holding up well.  Two of Vervain's rabbits meet with the stalwart Silver and the oft-wounded Buckthorn underground  and are lucky to get away with their lives. Trying to set the example, Groundsel digs his way in only to meet Blackavar who, much like Silver and Buckthorn, comes out on top. The descriptions of the altered conditions and advantages of  close-quarters combat in a narrow run are fascinating. Blackavar is the smaller rabbit, but a good holding bite, and knowing when to let go, are all he needs to drive the larger rabbit back injured. Woundwort discusses things with Campion, who has advocated starving the WD rabbits out. This is rejected because of the risk of staying on open downland for the time needed, which not many rabbits could handle as well as Campion. Determined to have a fighting victory, Woundwort wishes to draw upon the past success at Nutley Copse, the last warren the Efrafans succesfully attacked. They find another rabbit, Ragwort, who was also on that mission.  Woundwort learns what he has to. To make this work, the Efrafans will have to dig their way in straight down.    Hazel listens for a bit and realizes that the Efrafans have stopped digging at one point.  It means they're slowly figuring out the best way to get into the warren.   Fiver is also listening but not to the omnipresent sound of the digging but to those things that only a rabbit such as Fiver can 'hear.'  He's dropping off into some sort of stupor but he first makes a fearful unnatural sound and speaks sentences that strike fear into our heroes.  For, while Fiver now lies unable to be roused, Hazel's mind is processing things and it seems like he too has a vision. Suddenly Hazel knows what to do.  We readers don't yet and this makes this part very intriguing.  In the form of Blackberry and Dandelion, he'll take both brains and speed with him. Hazel's instructions to those that he'll take with him are to get out of the warren.  To get away no matter what and to link up with him at the iron tree at the foot of the scarp slope of the Down.  He instructs Bigwig to block a run and not to give up.  He intimates that El-ahrairah has given him a plan. And with that, Hazel and his two companions are gone.  Hazel's vision Just a couple more thoughts on this chapter from John Ruths that pertain to Hazel's 'vision.' Was it a vision akin to one of Fiver's or does the trance that Fiver is in at the end of the chapter bring this onto Hazel? The relevant passage is from page 385 in my Kindle edition and begins: "In Hazel's mind, green branches were straining in the wind."

Our Tomino-thon kicks off with a history-focused episode exploring the origins of Tomino Yoshiyuki leading up to the creation of his first full original series, Zambot 3 (which we'll be reviewing next week). Where did this mad creative genius come from, and what was he up to in the years before he earned his ‘Kill ‘em all' moniker? This episode takes us from the political climate in Japan during Tomino's college years, to Tomino's time at Mushi Pro becoming one of the most prolific episode directors on Tezuka Osamu's Mighty Atom (aka Astro Boy), to his first directorial project, a (very loose) adaptation of Tezuka's Triton of the Sea manga. We explore how he became known as the anime industry's ‘wandering storyboard man' in the 1970s, and end with the creation of the studio that became Sunrise, Tomino's creative home for the bulk of his career. AMOS WASN'T a trained prophet, yet his words resonate today, highlighting the injustices and moral decay of society. It's a stark reminder that the rich must not oppress the poor, a message as relevant now as it was then.   This week, we begin to explore the Book of Amo, focusing on its key messages and relevance today. Amos addressed social injustice and religious corruption in ancient Israel. Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa, delivered his messages during a time of relative peace and prosperity in Israel, specifically around the 8th century BC. However, this prosperity came at a cost, as the rich oppressed the poor, and religious practices deviated from true worship.  The Book of Amos begins with God's proclamation of judgment on the neighbors of Israel and Judah: Aram, Ammon, Moab, Edom, Tyre, and Gaza (the Philistines). But His harshest words were reserved for Judah and especially the northern kingdom of Israel. William Langland's Medieval poem "Piers Plowman". As part of a reading group I belong to. "How are we truly saved?"  This urgent question was particularly relevant when it was written 700 years ago because England was in the grip of the Black Death. But the question  is still echoing today.Join me as I explore a strange and stirring medieval poem that confronts hypocrisy, grapples with sin, and ultimately points to Christ's radical grace.Langland's riddles aren't just literary; they're spiritual challenges for our time. Even after historic civil rights progress over the last sixty years, there's no denying that certain groups of people still face real, serious, and even systemic discrimination. In pursuit of justice, many well-meaning activists have made identity central to their cause—arguing, for example, that in order to right wrongs, rules and laws must treat people differently, not equally, depending on the groups to which they belong. Whatever you think of the term “wokeness,” this new ideology has spread like wildfire through academia, journalism, entertainment, governments, and corporations, radically changing politics, policy, and our public discourse.   But what if they have missed the mark? What if crusading identitarianism is doing more harm than good? What if it's actually chipping away at some of the bedrock principles of our liberal democracy? If we want honest answers, we have to take these ideas seriously. In a culture where age is, at best, ignored, how do we rebuild a cohort of genuine Elders fit for the rapid transitions of the 21st Century: those who can combine the wisdom of wide boundary perspectives with the humility that allows flexibility of thinking, feeling and being? This is one of the core questions of our time and this week's guest is working to find answers. Alain Gauthier is co-founder and coordinator of the Regenerative Elder Process at the Elders Action Network. With John Izzo, he is co-host of The Way Forward Regenerative Conversations podcast and over his long life, he has been an international consultant, facilitator, coach, researcher-educator, and author. His book Actualising Evolutionary Co-Leadership: To Evolve a Creative and Responsible Society was published in 2014 - and is only available on Kindle (sorry) - but it is nonetheless a fascinating and inspiring read. A graduate from HEC (Paris), with an MBA from Stanford University, Alain was once a senior consultant at McKinsey & Company, As you'll hear, a life-changing experience led him to co-found Core Leadership Development in Oakland, California and to focus his professional work on developing co-leadership, partnering and coaching capabilities. ISAIAH'S PROPHECY of a coming Messiah included foreseeing where Jesus would declare war on the fallen realm.  Chapter 9 of the book of Isaiah picks up where the prophet left off, condemning the people of Israel, for consulting the dead on behalf of the living. His prophecy that a light would shine on those dwelling in a land of deep darkness was cited by Matthew as fulfilled when Jesus moved from Nazareth to Capernaum. We connect this to Psalm 23 in the valley of the shadow of death, which in our view is the Jordan River Valley between Mount Hermon and the Sea of Galilee. Isaiah 9 also includes the prophecy of a coming Savior who is called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6). We discussed the interesting rendering of this verse in the Lexham English Septuagint, in which “Wonderful Counselor” is translated “Messenger of the Great Council.” The second half of this chapter is devoted to God's judgment on the northern Kingdom of Israel, which was fulfilled when the Assyrians overran and conquered Samaria in 722 BC.
