Wondering how to celebrate Valentine's Day at Walt Disney World? We share the top six ways to celebrate Valentine's Day in style, plus a look at new Disney Parks wedding options and the new Disney Weddings gowns for 2024.New Disney Wedding Style Options Disney Weddings has added EPCOT with Spaceship Earth as a backdrop to its list of locations for in-park weddings at Walt Disney World. Disney noted that the offering includes enhanced unique lighting displays on Spaceship Earth, choreographed to music and changing color patterns. EPCOT is now available to book for Disney weddings taking place in January 2025 and beyond. In case you were wondering, Disney in-park weddings offer a lot of potential setups. Pricing will rise into the hundreds of thousands, starting with a standard $40,000 ceremony fee and going up from there. You must use Disney transportation and so on. Weddings take place two to three hours after park closing. Ever wondered why Magic Kingdom was closing early one day for no apparent reason? Weddings can involved extravagent seating and couches along Main Street. The reception in from of the castle with tables elegantly designed. An underlit dance floor in front of the castle. Arrive by a trip down Main Street in Cinderella's Carriage and so on. Disney Wedding Gowns 2024 And if you're mortgaging the house for a Disney Wedding, then you have to have a Disney Princess inspired gown from the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection, right? The 2024 line of Disney bridal gowns was just released and the gowns are, not surprisingly, stunning (and so is the photography being posted on social media by Disney). Sizes are available from 0 to 30 and gowns start at $1,799. Follow Disney Weddings on Instagram or Facebook if you want to see what all the buzz is about. -- Top Six Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day in Style at Walt Disney World How to Surprise Your Special Someone with a Magical Valentine's at Disney WorldSpa Treatment for TwoIf you are a couple who loves spas (or even if your significant other loves them and you want to make it special), the Grand Floridian Spa at Walt Disney World is a great spa where you can relax and unwind together. To book a treatment you can call a Spa Co-ordinator at (407) 824-3039 for more information on their couples options and other spa services. Hot Air Balloon RideIf you find it romantic to think of experiencing the "World" from high in the sky, head over to Disney Springs where you can board the Aerophile hot air balloon. This is a fun hot air balloon ride that floats 400 feet above the ground, offering great views of Walt Disney World (and beyond) day and night. You likely won't have the balloon to yourself on this one (it holds 30 people in total), but if you time it right you can catch a flight at sunset or during the fireworks displays for a little extra burst of romance and Disney magic. Cost is currently $30.00 per person (DVC and AP discounts may be available).Disney Springs Shopping SpreeIf your Valentine loves to shop, then why not surprise them with a Disney shopping spree at Disney Springs?! Gift your Valentine a gift card (or cash--which might be better for non-Disney shops) and accompany them on a shopping spree tour of Disney Springs! This is a particularly great gift if you don't normally like to spend time shopping, making it extra thoughtful and something your Valentine will truly appreciate it. Plus you have the option of making a day of it with a hot air balloon ride, treats and a romantic dinner!Romantic Carriage RideIs there anything more romantic than a horse-drawn carriage ride? Horse-drawn carriage rides are offered through the wilderness trails of Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and also at Disney's Port Orleans Resort - Riverside. There aren't many things more romantic than snuggling up with your special someone in an old fashioned horse-drawn carriage through relaxing natural surroundings. The rides are approximately 25 minutes long and leave from Pioneer Hall at Fort Wilderness and Boatwright's Dining Hall at Port Orleans. Call Disney Reservations for more information: 407-939-7529.Romantic Dinner for TwoNo romantic Disney vacation together would be complete without at least one extra special dinner for two. While Disney World is known for its fun themed dining and character experiences, it is also home to some first-rate award-winning restaurants, many of which are ideal for a romantic dinner for two. You can choose from very formal experiences such as Victoria & Albert's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, to more relaxed--yet very elegant--surroundings such as Citrico's right next door or Narcoossee's, nearby. Other great choices include Via Napoli, Takumi-Tei and Monsieur Paul at EPCOT or The Boathouse at Disney Springs. Pick your personal favorite, or even better, make a surprise choice if you know a particular restaurant they love or want to try. Whatever your tastes, there is a great romantic spot for you somewhere around Walt Disney World. Bicycle Built for TwoFinally, for some casual but thoughtful romantic fun, a bicycle built for two is a romantic notion that you can do in a very practical way at Walt Disney World with your Valentine. Rent a surrey bike at Disney's Boardwalk Inn (or several other places around Walt Disney World) and you can enjoy a cozy bike ride side-by-side with your special someone. Riding along the Disney Boardwalk and adjacent area at night amidst the lights and activity of the surrounding area is a particularly romantic experience. Plus, you can enjoy dinner, a drink, dessert or even a nightclub after the ride at The Boardwalk--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel Style PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, we that you enjoyed it.
Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to Retrosonic Podcast Episode 47 where Steve is joined by Rock Photographer Paul Slattery to discuss "Retrospectively Yours", the excellent new compilation from Ronnie Mayor of The Tours, the criminally underrated, short-lived Power Pop/New Wave band who Paul first photographed and championed way back in 1979. There's a special feature on the album which highlights Ronnie's songwriting skills with The Tours and Da Biz and we pick a selection of songs from both bands. Steve talks about another great night of conversation at The Exchange in Twickenham hosted by Gary Crowley with his special guests Debsey Wykes from Dolly Mixture and Mick Talbot from The Style Council and we play a classic Dolly Mixture song. Then we have brand new releases from former bandmates in The Prisoners, Graham Day and Allan Crockford, Graham with his debut solo single and Allan with Sounds Incarcerated, the lockdown cover version project with Viv Bonsels. Then there's Autoramas, our favourite Space Age Garage Rockers from Brazil, some perfectly crafted modern day French Ye-Ye from Monsieur Paul et Les Solutions, there's the melodic Glasgow sound of Neil Sturgeon & The Infomaniacs and some blistering tuneful Punk Rock from Suzi Moon. Paul picks his three favourite bands from his time living in Boston, The J. Geils Band, Duke & The Drivers and Lyres and there's songs from Magazine and The Ronettes and Paul reminisces on the time he was kissed by Ronnie Spector, and we the photographic evidence to prove it! Monsieur Paul was geboren & the rest is history!

In this week's episode of the Por Favor Podcast, Mike & Gary talk about Gary's upcoming trip down to Walt Disney World. The ENTIRE Arruda family is coming down do hit the parks and eat at some great spots. I cannot wait to hear about his dinner with Por Favor Wife at Monsieur Paul in the France Pavilion at EPCOT. Will Mike, Kristen and Rhody get a VRBO and join then in the City Beautiful? Thanks for listening, Mike & Gary

L'interrogatoire ? Bon, bref, tu as raison. “ TROIS… Rhaaaaaaaaa ! PITIE ! JE ME SERS AU PASSAGE SUR QUELQUES TRAFICS POUR MATERONE ! JE VOUS JURE QUE JE NE SUIS PAS UN TRAITRE ! QUATRE… C'EST VRAI J'AI PIQUÉ DANS LA CAISSE ! ECOUTEZ JE PEUX VOUS FAIRE RENCONTRER… HAAAAAAAA.. CINQ ! Were on a series called Come Before Winter. The lady that is there obviously has gone through some difficulties. She has her head down. She looks to be hiding from the world. Something has gone wrong, and she isnt sure exactly what shes going to do. You and I have all been in this situation. Sometimes were depressed. Sometimes we may be in despair. Sometimes it may be because of death or doubts. I dont know if it always has to start with a D, but it is for this series. So that's what were talking about, those winter experiences of our lives, those times when the world is dark, the world is cold, and the times when were lonely and discouraged. How do we break through those periods? How do we keep our heads above the water? How do we keep from sinking? We decided we would look at the life of Paul. We decided wed look at him in prison and how he dealt with a winter experience in his life. This morning, were going to be talking about despair. This is the second to last in the series. Next week, well be talking about Death. If you know somebody who has lost a loved one, Id like to invite you to bring them with you to church next week so we can encourage them. This week, were talking about Despair. Youve seen despair. Maybe youve been flipping your channels at night. You know the show that comes on at night in the Third World Country with the children who are starving? It shows the children, and it kind of catches you off guard. You linger for a while, but you usually dont linger long because its very uncomfortable to look at. You look at those little faces, and you see despair. Maybe youre watching the news, and theres been a natural disaster like Katrina or the earthquake in Haiti. You see the faces of people who are waiting for rescue, and the rescue never comes. Thats despair. Thats the look of despair. Theyre waiting for food, waiting for water, but it never comes. Maybe youve been with somebody who is in the hospital. Theyve gone through treatments, and theyre waiting to hear the news if the cancer is gone or in remission. The doctor comes, and he says, Its still there. In fact, its spread. You see the look on their face. Many times, the person in that situation has the look of despair. They say, Ive done everything I can do. What else can I do? Despair is what happens when we finally give up hope. We think thats the definition of despair. It is a dissipation of hope. Its as if life becomes relentless. A problem never seems to go away. No matter what we do, we never get victory over it. We dont see any light at the end of the tunnel. In those situations, if were not careful, we can start to despair. Youre saying, Isnt despair similar to depression? Not at all. We talked about how when were depressed, many times we withdraw from people. We dont care about things. Sometimes if its clinical depression or a serious depression, people may want to end their lives. In despair, you very much want to live. You very much care about something. There is something you really want. You intensely care, but its always out of your grasp. Its always out of reach, and it looks like it never will be within reach; so you finally abandon your dream. You finally abandon hope. That is despair. Some of you have encountered despair in your lives. You say, How do I break free? How do I get victory? I really think the answer isnt something Im going to tell you that is an earth-shattering thing where you say, Well, you know, Id never heard of that before. Were going to talk about the power of prayer, of faith, and of servanthood. Theres nothing earth-shatteringly new. Theres nothing new under the sun, but stressing the importance of those Disciplines and preparing our hearts for when the storms of life do come are how we can stay afloat. Were going to look at a point in Pauls life today where he actually was in despair. Its not this prison experience. Let me just remind you: we are in 2 Timothy 4. Here is a quick review. Some of you have been here for two weeks and say, I dont want to hear this again. Ill just do it really quickly for the sake of those who are hearing this series for the first time. Paul is in Rome for his second imprisonment. He is accused of being against the Roman government. This one is serious. This one is going to end his life, and he knows it. There is a crazy dictator by the name of Nero who was the emperor in Rome. He is on a vendetta to destroy Christianity, to eradicate it from the face of the earth. He blames the great fire of Rome on Christians, and he is out to exterminate Christians. Hes doing it in a sadistic, mean way. He is torturing them before he kills them, so Paul is in prison awaiting his fate. He sees the writing on the wall. He knows hes not going to get out of it this time. There is a target on him because he is the ling reader of the church. He is a big prize; he is the big fish that Nero has caught. So he writes this letter to Timothy, this young man who hes mentored in the faith, encouraging him to fight the good fight, encouraging him to pastor the church there in Ephesus. As he writes this letter, he is in a dungeon. It is a pit in the ground. Its dark. It is cold. There is a stench there. The sewer line for Rome runs right outside the prison cell. The most hardened criminals facing death are in this pit in the ground. There is nothing to protect you from them. There werent individual cells. You were just all thrown in together in this holding area, and Paul was in chains. Imagine what it would be like to sleep. Imagine what it would be like if Paul were to be attacked by one of these men. How would he defend himself with chains around his ankles and his wrists? Imagine the food they had to eat. We said last week there was no chef saying, Did you need some Grey Poupon with that, Monsieur Paul? Is the soup to your liking? That didnt happen. You were treated like an animal. Yet, in the midst of these deplorable conditions, Paul maintains not only his faith, but a positive optimistic attitude. How did he do that? Well, these disciplines were very much a part of Pauls life. The discipline of prayer is really brought out in the first chapter, the third verse. Paul was writing to Timothy, remember. He said to him in Verse 3 (of 2 Timothy 1, page 1178 of pew Bibles), …with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Nothing against people who have structured prayer-some of you will say, Well, Im going to meet with this person on this day at this time and pray. Thats wonderful and good, and you should continue to do that; but prayer has to be more than that. With Paul, prayer was ongoing. You didnt have a beginning or an end. It was something he ended when he went to sleep and resumed when he woke up in the morning. It was all day. He said, Night and day, day after day, Timothy, I pray for you. So the discipline of prayer was present strongly in Pauls life. Secondly, it was faith. Look at Verse 12. He said, That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day. He can guard my soul because He is trustworthy. Paul doesnt say, I know what I believe. He says, I know whom I have believed in. There is a big difference. Christianity is not simply memorizing a set of facts or doctrines and spitting it back. Its about a person. Its not about a building, denomination, a manmade structure. It is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. He said, I know whom I have belief in. Because I know Him and because He is trustworthy, I can keep my faith even in the midst of this dungeon experience in my life. Thirdly, I guess in one sense you could look at the whole Book. What are they doing as he is facing his last days? Hes on death row. What is he doing? Hes showing love and concern for his son in the faith, Timothy. Then I want to draw your attention to Chapter 4:11 (page 1180 of pew Bibles). He says, Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. You almost dont catch that. You really dont appreciate it until you understand where he is at. There are guys on death row today, women on death row today in our country. How many of them in their last days are in their cells thinking, How can I help people? How can I minister to others? Thats what Paul is doing. Paul is on death row and hes saying, Bring Mark because he is going to be helpful to me in my ministry. Yeah, Paul, but youre in a dungeon, chained. Youre getting ready to die and be executed. In Pauls mind, until that day came, he was about ministry. He said, While Im in this prison cell, Im a minister of Jesus Christ. While Im in this prison cell, Im going to accomplish the purpose for which He sent me. So until his last day, Paul saw himself as a servant of Jesus Christ. Friends, one of the greatest ways to conquer despair is to take our eyes off of our problems and our situations, focus on the needs of others around us and seek to help them. When we do that, it is amazing how our perspective changes because when we are in a despairing situation, our natural tendency is to only look at ourselves and not the needs around us, correct? Its very self-absorbing. Paul had the ability, even though he had needs and he paid attention to those needs-he didnt neglect those needs-but he did not become consumed by himself. Even in an adverse situation, he was looking at how he could become a more effective minister looking to meet the needs of the people around him. I think thats one of the key reasons why Paul did not enter into despair in a despairing situation. Because he was involved in giving others hope, it enabled him to have hope in a situation that seemed hopeless. As I promised, were going to look at a situation in Pauls life where he did despair. It lasted about five to seven years, but no more than seven, from the time of his second Roman imprisonment. Its found in the Book of Acts 27. If you have your church Bibles, you can turn there. Im going to tell you whats going on in Pauls life. Paul had just stood trial in Jerusalem. He has appealed to Caesar. He wants his case to be heard in Rome, so Paul has boarded a ship with Luke. Were going to show a map, and youre going to see that sometimes Luke writes in the first person, plural. He says we. You might read that and say, Who is we? Well, its Luke, and hes writing because hes with Paul on the ship. (Here is a link that has some maps on them of the travels to get the idea the area Pastor is describing: http://www.ccel.org/bible/phillips/CN092MAPS1.htm) They start in Jerusalem and then sail around Cyprus. Its October, and its already starting to get windy with choppy seas. He sails around through Asia Minor. Theyre going to come down here to Crete. They cant continue anymore in Crete because its so difficult that they stop the boat in a place called Fair Havens. Then there is a big debate in Fair Havens, so they try to decide do we sail on or stop in winter They decide that Rome is not feasible. The sea is too bad. Rome isnt going to happen. Rome is way up in the West, so that isnt going to happen. The debate then is do they stop there or do they go to Phoenix-not Arizona, but Phoenix, Crete. All they wanted to do was go about 50 miles. That was all they wanted to do. Paul said, Listen, if we do that trip, we might die. Were not going to make it. The sea is too bad. They said, We dont want to winter here. Its not a good place to winter. Lets get to Phoenix. Thats a better place to winter. They dont listen to Paul. They take off during the storm at sea but end up down toward Africa in the waters surrounding Africa. That's how far they get. It gets pretty messy. Then they end up in Malta. Because of the storm at sea, they ended up all the way over in Malta for about two weeks. That's what happens to Paul. I gave you that as a sense of geography so youd know where were at. Lets pick up the story in Acts Chapter 27:9 (page 1109). Were going to see how Paul enters into despair and how he gets out of it. Verse 9, Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Fast, after Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It was about October 5 that year, 59 AD, and it wasnt a good time to sail. Paul says, Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also. Paul speaks as a seasoned veteran of the seas. He has traveled many places to bring the Gospel to many different people. Sadly, he is a veteran of shipwrecks. By this time in Pauls life, do you know how many shipwrecks hes been a part of? Three. This is shipwreck number four that is about to happen. Hes trying to avert that; hes trying to not let that happen. By the way, to speak as a prisoner is very rare. Youre a prisoner! You have no rights. Youre barely a human being. Yet, he had such favor with the centurion who was in charge of the ship that he was allowed to speak. That was very rare. The centurion is in charge of the whole ship. His name is Julius. On this ship, there are the Roman soldiers. Theyre taking this cargo of grain to Rome. Hes in charge of the vessel, not the captain, not the owner. There are the sailors who are sailing the ship, and there are many prisoners. Most of the prisoners are going to Rome where many of them will be put to death in the arena for the amusement of the Roman citizens and Emperor Nero. So they are on this ship and Paul speaks, but they dont listen to Paul. They decide its not a good place to spend the winter, and theyre going to go ahead and take their chances and sail the 50 miles to Phoenix. Verse 13, When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. This gentle south wind blows, and they say, See, Paul. Its not bad. The sea isnt bad. That breeze, its a nice gentle breeze. Were going to just kinda coast into Phoenix. None of you have ever ignored Godly counsel to follow the winds of change. That 11 oclock crowd, though, they do. The crowd thats coming in after you? Sometimes they do that, but this crowd-you have never ignored Godly counsel and just followed after the wind. Its good to know were not like them. It says, Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the northeaster, swept down from the island. This tall mountain was about 8,000 square feet high. It had been known to have these torrid winds come down from it near Crete. The ship was caught up by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along. How frightening was that? Theyre out in the middle of the ocean. You couldnt see land anymore. In fact, it was so cloudy you couldnt even see anything to navigate your ship. You couldnt see the sun, the moon, or the stars. Youre just floundering at sea. You have no control. Your sails are basically meaningless, and youre just trying to survive. They started to rope the ship with cables to try to hold it together. Pretty soon, we see them start throwing cargo overboard-grain, furniture, tools, anything they can to try to make the ship lighter. They started heading toward Africa, and then it says in Verse 18, We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard. On the third day, they threw the ships tackle overboard with their own hands. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally… Listen to this. …we finally gave up all hope of being saved. That is despair. Its gradual. Its progressive, and eventually it steals all hope. When hope is gone, you have fully entered into what we call despair. Notice that Luke says we gave up all hope. Who does that mean-gave up all hope? Everybody, including Paul and including Luke. The only person to write more of the New Testament than Paul was Luke. If you combine Luke and Acts together quantitatively, it is more of the New Testament than Paul wrote even though Paul wrote most of the letters. These are the two guys that wrote almost the entire Bible that you and I read, yet they were in a situation where they were despaired for their lives. Have you ever been in a storm at sea? I havent. Ive been in a storm on a lake at Governor Dodge, and that was frightening. We were on a sailboat and this storm came in really fast, so we had to try to get back to land quickly. There was thunder and lightning. That was terrifying. Imagine being at sea with those large waves, and imagine enduring that day after day after day. They were so desperate. Its interesting because in Chapter 23 of Acts, Jesus says to Paul, You must testify for me in Rome. Jesus told him that. He said, You are going to go to Rome and testify concerning me. Its a certainty. Paul had forgotten the promise. You see if he perished in a shipwreck, then that means what Jesus said to him was not trustworthy. That means the promise Jesus made to him was not true, right? Its kind of hard to testify for him in Rome when youre at the bottom of the ocean dead. So if that were to come true-if they were to perish at sea-then Jesus told you a lie. Sometimes in the midst of those storms of life, those winter experiences, we can forget the promises of God. Friends, if Paul could forget the promise of God, so could you sometimes. He had to be reminded of what Jesus had said. Paul stands up, and hes going to talk to the men again. It says in Verse 21, After then men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. At first glance, it appears that Paul is doing a neah neah neah neah neah! It seems like Paul is like, I told you! You didnt listen! If youd have listened to me, this wouldnt have happened. Hes kind of rubbing their noses in it a little bit. I dont think thats what hes doing. I think what hes trying to do is establish credibility. Hes trying to say, Look, Im not a crazy old man. I know what Im talking about. You didnt listen to me the first time, and I was right. Youre going to listen to me this time. If you dont listen to me this time, youre going to perish, so do I have your attention? Are you going to listen to this crazy old man now? Maybe I know what Im talking about. I think thats what hes trying to do. Hes trying to establish a rapport by reminding them that he was right. But now I urge you to keep up your courage because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Thats kind of a good news/bad news scenario. The good news is youre not going to die. The bad news is the ship is going to be destroyed. You start doing the math and say, Im going to live, minus the ship. Right there, carry the one… Okay, Im on this ship! Its going to be destroyed. Howd you like to be on an airplane and hear that? The pilot says, Welcome aboard flight 444. Were going over Omaha, Nebraska. Were going to be coming in at 3 oclock today. While, the good news is none of you will die, but we will be crashing at the airport. Thank you very much, and enjoy your flight. Id be like, Thats not what I want to hear! I dont want the pilot to tell me, Good news, youre not going to die; bad news, when we get to our destination, were going to crash. Thats not very comforting. Youd think Paul would have heard from God. When I hear from God, I want God to say something like this, You are in a storm, but the storm is going to end. Im going to calm the seas, and you are going to drift gently into your port where you can have a nice safe winter. Youre not going to crash. Everything is going to be okay, and youre just going to drift into the harbor and have it be peace, so peaceful. That's what I want to hear. That's a Thank You Jesus prayer, right? I dont want to hear the prayer, Youre going to live, but youre going to crash. Thats what he tells him. He said, This is what I heard. Im telling you what I heard. Theres not going to be loss of life, but the ship that we are on will be destroyed; and we will be on the ship when its destroyed. Have a good day, everybody! He said, Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. Why? Because Paul was afraid. Thats who you say do not be afraid to. You say, Do not be afraid, to people who are afraid; so Paul was afraid. You must stand trial before Caesar. He reminded him of the promise. Do you remember what Jesus said? You must stand trial before Caesar. Who was the Caesar? Nero. You say, I thought Julius was the Caesar. He was the first one, but that became a surname, a title. Every emperor after him was also Caesar; so the Caesar at this point in history is Nero. He says, Youre going to stand before Nero. …and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you. Its a prophesy. Everybodys going to be saved. Everybody is going to be spared. Notice how he words it, the way the angel words it. He says, God has graciously given you the lives. Why does it say given you the lives? Theyre not Pauls lives. They dont belong to him. Most of them are strangers to Paul. Why does he say God has given you the lives? I believe its worded that way because this was an answer to Pauls prayer. I believe Paul had been praying not only for his own survival and Lukes survival but for all the people-for Julius the captain, for the owners, for the sailors, the soldiers, and for the prisoners. Paul had intervened or interceded for everybody on the ship. He says, Gods answered your prayers. Hes given you everybody on the ship. So number one, Paul remembers to pray. He said, Even though Im in this dismal circumstance, I need to pray. When Paul prays, hes reminded of his promise and his faith is renewed. He remembers whom he has believed in. He remembers what God promised him. That causes hope to rise. Now, remember what we said: the third element was servanthood. You take your eyes off your problem, and you focus on the needs around you; and you make sure others are ministered to as well, right? Does he do that? Lets take a look at what happens. He says in Verse 25, So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me. Thats faith. Faith is saying, I believe it will happen just as He told me. That is the definition of faith. Faith is believing that God will do exactly what He has said. Nevertheless we must run aground on some island. Verse 33, Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. Now Paul has really become the leader of the ship, not the centurion; its Paul. For the last fourteen days, he said, you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food-you havent eaten anything. Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head. After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves. So all 275 men were encouraged by the words of Paul. What is Paul doing? Hes ministering. Hes serving them. Hes saying, Look, Im not just concerned over my needs-my spiritual needs, my physical needs-but Im concerned about the men that are around me. This is an opportunity for God to show Himself strong in their lives. He ministers to their spiritual needs, their emotional needs, and their physical needs. Paul doesnt just become wrapped up in his own life, as everybody else was on that ship, but he begins to focus on the people around him. When we do that, friends, we lift ourselves out of despair because God has wired us in such a way that when we give others hope, it raises the hope level in our lives. When the hope level is raised in your life, despair cant live there anymore. Even in a despairing situation, it could not live there anymore. I want to end the story. The last service I forgot to end the story. I feel so bad. I want to call all the 8 oclockers back and say, Let me finish the story. I totally forgot! Daylight comes, and they cut lose the anchors. In Verse 4, it says they had let down four anchors and cut them loose. Did I tell you guys the story about the anchors? Did I say that to this service, about the four anchors? No. They were found, by the way. A few decades ago, there were some divers off the coast of Crete who were in an area that Paul described here in this Book. Its not St. Pauls Bay where we now believe Paul shipwrecked. Its another bay close by there. They found four anchors together dating back to 60 AD in Rome. They identified them as Roman anchors. They are in a Maritime museum near Crete. To this day you can go and see the four anchors that the men found right where the Bible says they were dropped. What was their biggest fear? Their biggest fear was the ship would be destroyed because if the ship was destroyed, they would drown. Crashing the ship was their greatest fear. Look what happened, Verse 41, (page 1110), The bow stuck fast and would not move… So the front of the ship got lodged in the ocean floor. The stern, or the back of the boat, was broken into pieces by the pounding of the surf; so the ship began to break up with them still on it, still in very turbulent waters. The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping. In other words, if the prisoners escaped, their lives were on the line; so they said, Heres what well do. Well kill the prisoners. That way, were saved. But the centurion wanted to spare Pauls life… because if they killed the prisoners, theyd have to kill Paul. …and kept them from carrying out their plan. So God in His sovereignty is working behind the scenes. Hes working through the centurion. Hes working through the circumstances so that His purpose in Paul and His purpose for the Gospel will be fulfilled. Its pretty cool. He ordered that those who could swim jump overboard first and get to the land. The idea was if you were a soldier and you could swim, youd get out of the boat first and swim to the land. Then youd wait for the prisoners. When the prisoners came out of this, theyd be tired. Youd have time to catch your breath; and then when the prisoners arrived, youd grab them. Theyd come at different points and different times. Theyd be exhausted. Theyd be happy to just be on land. They wouldnt want to run anywhere. Youd recapture them and secure them, and everything would be okay. The soldiers jumped in the water, and then it says the rest of them got there on planks or on pieces of the ship. In this way, everyone reached land in safety. The very thing that they feared became the source that God used to rescue them. Thats what God often does. Hell take pieces of our own shattered dreams, the thing we feared the most, and Hell use that to rescue us and to deliver us. How many of you have seen the movie, Pay It Forward? Youve certainly heard that expression, right? It started from this movie where Haley Joel Osments character plays a young grade school boy who was challenged by his teacher to dream something big and then tell it to the class. His vision was to pay it forward. You do something kind for three strangers. You dont ask for thanks. You dont ask for anything in return. You help those who need it the most. They dont even have to know who you are, but then you ask them to do it for three strangers as well; so those three now help three, so thats nine people. Then those nine people now help three, so that's 27. Beyond that, my math is challenged, so you get the point. Id have to get a calculator out. They just talked about how this would spread, this movement. Actually, the ironic thing is art did resemble life because people began to pay it forward around the country. Still to this day, people will say, You know, Im just paying it forward. In this scene, were going to see the man who was the recipient of an act of kindness by the main character in the movie. This little boy helped this man who was in a despairing situation. This man lived on the streets. He was a drug addict. He was facing the probability of an awful death, and he was helped by this young man and by what he does. I want you to look carefully at the actor too and see if you recognize who this actor is. (Again, this movie is Pay it Forward. Exact clip is unavailable.) Did you recognize the actor? He played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, James Caviezel. Hes desperate, and he is in despair. He received an act of love and kindness. He decided he would take his eyes off of himself and off his plight, and he would help somebody else. Thats how it works. When you lift the hope in somebody elses life, not only does it lift the hope level in your life to remove the despair, but it helps them to do the same thing. I want to share with you a story really quick. As you know, our church hosted the homeless shelter a few weeks ago. It was Saturday night, and some of the men had come to our service. They attended our Saturday night service. After the service was done, I went down to the other end of the building where we were hosting the men. I began to talk with some of them and have some conversations. John Miller came to me and said, Hey, Pastor Jeff, we want you to meet somebody. I figured it was another homeless man he wanted me to meet. I said, Sure, and I began to walk toward the patio. There was a little boy and his mom sitting there. This is Andrew. I heard the story of Andrew. Andrew, I was told, had just had his ninth birthday. He decided for his ninth birthday [to pay it forward]. He said, Mom, are there any homeless men in Janesville? She said, Im sure there are, honey. Lets find out. She made some phone calls and got in touch with the shelter. They got in touch with our church and said, Wed like to do something. Wed like to maybe give some clothes or some gifts to one of the homeless men. Is there something we can do? The person on the other end of the line said, As a matter of fact, there is a man who just came into the shelter, and he has only the clothes on his back. He doesnt have any underwear, only what he brought in with him. That little boy took his birthday money and went out and bought him clothes. Then he came to our church and gave it to the man-nine years old! If a nine year old could do that, there is hope for us old folks here today. He said, Im going to help somebody who is having a hard time. Thats pretty cool. If that little boy can get it, we can get it too. Life is not about just yourself. If Paul could get it in the midst of a hurricane wind storm at sea and in the midst of an imprisonment in a dungeon, friends, you and I can get it right now. You have to lift your eyes off yourself, look around you, and say, How can I be a servant of God? Who can I help? When we do that, we raise hope in our lives. We raise hope in the lives of others. We make our world a better place. The Gospel is to be lived out in action. The Gospel brings hope where there is despair. I hope that youll be a bearer of hope to your world today. Lets pray: Father, we thank You for the example of Paul. We are challenged by it. We see today that he was human like us, that he had fear. He went through despair and forgot Your promises in that storm of his life; but through prayer, through faith, and through servanthood, he was able to rise above that. Hope was renewed in his spirit, and he lifted the hope out of an entire ship. You used him to save almost 300 lives that day. Lord, I dont know what all the storms were going through are, but I do pray that we would have that like mind. I do pray that we would be people of prayer-not just as an event, but an ongoing prayer life both day and night. I pray that we would be people of faith who like Paul know whom we have belief, not just what. Father, we believe it will happen just as Youve said. Regardless of our circumstances, we will never cease to recognize that we are servants of Jesus. Lord, if well just put You first, well let the chips fall where they may. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
