Send us a textWhat does it take to prepare a community for disaster? In this revealing conversation with municipal crisis planning expert Alicia Johnson, we explore the critical differences between organizational readiness and community resilience—and why both are essential when disaster strikes.Drawing from her 20+ years of experience in emergency management, Alicia shares how her journey began with witnessing the Yellowstone fires as a child and evolved into a career dedicated to building community preparedness. She offers a powerful distinction that many emergency planners miss: while organizational readiness is built on procedures and protocols, community readiness depends on trust and relationships that can withstand crisis. The conversation explores recent catastrophic events like the European power outages and the Texas freeze that left Houston homes flooding in freezing temperatures. These case studies reveal how quickly modern infrastructure can fail and the cascading impacts that follow. As Alicia notes, "We have to acknowledge that bad things happen to good organizations"—the first step toward meaningful preparation. We dig into why "checkbox planning" continues to plague emergency response, with organizations creating plans that look impressive on paper but collapse under pressure. Alicia challenges listeners to move beyond the organizational chart to build genuine capacity through regular training, full-scale exercises, and empowered decision-making.Whether you're a municipal leader, emergency planner, or simply someone concerned about community resilience, this conversation offers critical insights into building systems and relationships that can withstand the unexpected. Because when disaster strikes, trust might be your most valuable resource. If you'd like to reach out to Alicia, you can reach her below:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/aliciadjohnsonWeb: www.twolynchpinroad.com We'd love to hear from you. The Audacity to Heal: Alicia Johnson Niles on Grief, C-PTSD & Finding Peace

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

In this deeply moving episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with author and advocate Alicia Johnson Niles, who courageously opens up about living with complex PTSD after the violent loss of her father in early childhood. Alicia shares her journey of growing up in the shadow of trauma, navigating the internalized shame and people-pleasing tendencies that followed, and how confronting the truth behind her father's murder helped her heal. Her upcoming memoir, Angel in Arlington, is a testament to facing fear, reclaiming identity, and forging peace from pain.   About the Guest:Alicia Johnson Niles is an author, speaker, and trauma recovery advocate. After losing her father to a violent crime at age two, Alicia spent decades unknowingly living with C-PTSD. Her healing journey began at 30 when she gave herself permission to grieve and seek truth. Alicia now inspires others to embrace their “unlikely courage” and connect with the grief they've suppressed. Her memoir offers a powerful narrative of healing and hope.   Key Takeaways: Trauma can shape identity even without conscious memory. Grief, when suppressed, manifests in anxiety, shame, and people-pleasing. Healing often begins with permission—sometimes from others, always from within. Confronting painful truths, even decades later, can be a gateway to peace. Emotional eating and people-pleasing are common grief responses, especially in children. Courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to walk through it.   Connect with Alicia:Visit www.angelinarlington.com to receive a free chapter of her book and stay updated on its release. Book Title: Lady Susan Author: Jane Austen Episode: Number 78 | Part 2 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The novella is presented through a series of letters exchanged between various characters, which provides a unique and intimate insight into their thoughts and feelings. Throughout the letters, the reader discovers the devious and calculating nature of Lady Susan, as she attempts to juggle multiple romantic relationships, often with married or engaged men. Despite her selfish and manipulative behavior, Lady Susan's intelligence and charm manage to keep some of her acquaintances spellbound, including her confidante, Mrs. Alicia Johnson. Lady Susan's plans become increasingly complicated and entangled as she tries to secure financial stability and societal status for herself and her daughter, Frederica. While "Lady Susan" is not as well-known as some of Austen's other works, such as "Pride and Prejudice" or "Sense and Sensibility," it remains a captivating and skillfully written piece. The novella provides a glimpse into Austen's early writing style and her exploration of complex female characters, making it a valuable addition to her literary legacy. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ About the author: Tragically, Jane Austen's life was cut short at the age of 41 when she succumbed to an unidentified illness, likely Addison's disease, on July 18, 1817, in Winchester, England. Despite her untimely death, her novels continued to gain popularity in the decades that followed, eventually becoming classics of English literature. Today, Jane Austen's works remain widely read and beloved, inspiring countless adaptations, spin-offs, and devoted fan communities worldwide. Her profound influence on the romance and comedy genres, as well as her exploration of societal conventions, continues to captivate readers and scholars alike, solidifying her status as one of the most celebrated and influential writers in the history of English literature. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional Resources: Lay Susan by Jane Austen http://www.loyalbooks.com/book/lady-susan-by-jane-austen

Book Title: Lady Susan Author: Jane Austen Episode: Number 77 | Part 1 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lady Susan" is an epistolary novella written by Jane Austen, one of the most celebrated English authors of the 19th century. The novella was likely written in the early 1790s but was not published until long after Austen's death in 1817. The story revolves around the character of Lady Susan Vernon, a charming and cunning widow in her thirties. Lady Susan is a master manipulator, using her wit and beauty to navigate the social circles of the upper class while constantly seeking advantageous matches for herself and her daughter, Frederica. The novella is presented through a series of letters exchanged between various characters, which provides a unique and intimate insight into their thoughts and feelings. Throughout the letters, the reader discovers the devious and calculating nature of Lady Susan, as she attempts to juggle multiple romantic relationships, often with married or engaged men. Lady Susan's plans become increasingly complicated and entangled as she tries to secure financial stability and societal status for herself and her daughter, Frederica. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ About the author: Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a renowned English novelist whose works have left an indelible mark on literature. Born on December 16, 1775, in the village of Steventon in Hampshire, England, Austen was the seventh child of George Austen, a clergyman, and Cassandra Leigh. She had six brothers and one sister, and her immediate family played a significant role in her life and writing. Growing up in a household that valued learning and literature, Jane Austen's love for reading and writing flourished from a young age. She received a formal education along with her brothers, which was an unusual opportunity for girls at the time. Her father's extensive library exposed her to a diverse range of literature, including classics and contemporary works. Austen's early literary efforts included composing plays, poems, and short stories for her family's amusement. In her late teens and early twenties, she began working on her first full-length novels, some of which were later revised and published under different titles. In the early 1800s, Austen's literary career began to take shape. In 1811, her first published novel, "Sense and Sensibility," was released anonymously. This was followed by "Pride and Prejudice" (1813), "Mansfield Park" (1814), and "Emma" (1815), all of which earned her growing recognition and acclaim. Despite achieving modest success during her lifetime, Austen remained anonymous as an author during her career. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional Resources: Lay Susan by Jane Austen http://www.loyalbooks.com/book/lady-susan-by-jane-austen

The Amazon Labor Union victory at the JFK8 warehouse on Staten Island was historic, but right now, as we speak, Amazon is currently in court trying to throw out the results of that election, and pro-union worker-organizers keep getting fired. One of those workers is Alicia Johnson, who, as Luigi Morris writes, is "a 56-year-old Black immigrant who lives in the deep Bronx and worked at JFK8 as a Picker Packer. Her commute to work took more than two and a half hours." After Johnson exercised her right to request accommodation from Amazon that would allow her to keep working with an injured leg, she was fired in a suspected act of retaliation. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks to Johnson about her time working at Amazon, why she supports the union, and about the Kafkaesque nightmare she's faced trying to secure the unemployment benefits she's entitled to.To read the transcript of this episode and read show notes, visit: Featured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive at freemusicarchive.org):Jules Taylor, "Working People Theme Song"Pre-Production/Studio: Maximillian AlvarezPost-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Please note that part of Alicia's work is to reclaim the word ‘fat' as simply a descriptor, without negative connotations attached to it. I intentionally use this word comfortably now, thanks to Alicia's teachings.
