Spider-Noir Editors – Jennifer Barbot, ACE; Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE; Eric Kissack, ACE and Geraud Brisson, ACE Although the editors of Spider-Noir may have all arrived at the series through different paths, they quickly found themselves working toward the same goal: shaping a superhero story that functions first and foremost as a noir detective tale. For Jennifer Barbot, Tirsa Hackshaw, Eric Kissack, and Geraud Brisson, that meant balancing 1930s atmosphere, modern pacing, dry comedy, stylized action, and the very particular energy of a Nicolas Cage performance. Created by Oren Uziel for MGM+ and Prime Video, Spider-Noir stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is pulled back into his former life as the city's only superhero, The Spider. The series also stars Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson, and is presented in both "Authentic Black and White" and "True-Hue Full Color" versions. For the editors, that dual-format release created one of the show's most interesting creative and technical challenges. The editors primarily cut in black and white, leaning into the shadows, contrast and classic noir language of the series, while visual effects reviews often revealed the same scenes in color. The result was a show that could feel emotionally different depending on which version was being watched, even when the underlying performance, rhythm and story remained the same. JENNIFER BARBOT, ACE Jennifer Barbot is an editor whose credits include Your Honor, Raised by Wolves, The Man in the High Castle, Jessica Jones and Dope Thief. On Spider-Noir, Jennifer was drawn to the show's mix of noir style, superhero mythology and emotional character work, as well as the opportunity to help establish the tone of a world that had to feel both period-inspired and contemporary. TIRSA HACKSHAW, ACE Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE has worked across a wide range of television and film projects, including One Piece, Kung Fu, Jupiter's Legacy, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Having previously worked with Steve Lightfoot on Marvel's The Punisher, Tirsa came to Spider-Noir with both a love of the noir genre and a deep appreciation for the Spider-Verse, making the show a natural fit for her interests as an editor. ERIC KISSACK, ACE Eric Kissack, ACE is an editor and director whose work includes The Good Place, Veep, Black Monday, Rutherford Falls, Pam & Tommy and The Studio. He has also edited feature comedies such as Role Models, Brüno, Cedar Rapids, The Dictator, Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy's Home, Instant Family, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Bottoms. On Spider-Noir, Eric was especially interested in the show's dry, organic comedy and in finding a rhythm that allowed the humor to breathe without undercutting the detective story. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Pokémon, aka Pocket Monster (Poketto Monsutā). From games and cards to television and movies, Pokémon has defined generations and inspired the entire world. It is more popular today than ever. People steal the cards in major heists, which have gone global, and others use the cards for money laundering. Those of us growing up with this type entrainment, including general anime and manga, were probably told it was stupid and a waste of time and money. But the Japanese beg to differ. These things are an expression of their culture, one that is so influential it has touched the entire world in profound ways. The current Prime Minister quotes Attack on Titan and the government as a whole has decided to help boost these industries, including video games, with 500-billion yen over five years, not because they are failing but due to the fact they are such a key component of the culture — to help spread them while they are already on fire. From storytelling to artwork, and from pushing the boundaries of free speech and creativity to the fantasy and imagination outlet they provide for adults and children. Naturally there are some that despite anime, manga, and video games. They attempt to adulterate them, poison them, and even ban them. Legislation in Texas seeks to ban this part of Japanese culture while various Christian and Jewish groups have over the years argued for the same. Why? Certainly because of religious bigotry, and due to misunderstandings of culture. But could there be more to the story? Perhaps the hyper-masculine and hyper-feminine characters, the archetypical storylines, and the very issue of pushing the boundaries of censorship are highly offensive to a particular agenda. Hentai, for example, sits at the top of most major porn searches naturally and clearly interferes with the artificial propping up of abuse, incest, and LGBTQ content. The same goes for the JAV industry. The pedo argument against anime and manga is popular, but fails to account for key details: the drawings are not human, these things are not just things for kids, the kawaii aesthetic is not understood, fantasy is seen differently, and women make up a signifiant portion of the industry. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on femininity and beauty in Japan whereas ruggedness fills that role in the U.S. Besides, which country has more pedos and more domestic violence? It's not Nippon. Others argue that this kind of entertainment is not productive, despite the Japanese being considered some of those productive people in the world. Meanwhile, America is seen as increasingly lazier. Perhaps the issue is and what these forms of entertainment inspire people to do. Numerous cases exist internationally of people helping others because they were inspired by fictional manga and anime characters. While most of these so-called cartoons can inspire people to do good things, role models in the west often include lowlife degenerates. Netflix's live action take on the classic manga and animated series, One Piece, has been a massive, world wide success. For season 2, supervising sound editor Paul Col and re-recording mixer Gavin Fernades, were presented with an intimidating amount of audio challenges. A sword fight involving 100 enemies, bad guys that battle by turning into smoke, whales the size of buildings and lots more had to be given sounds built from scratch. This episode was recorded live as part of AirCon 26. ______ Tonebenders' host, Tim Muirhead, will be hosting and moderating a FREE screening of Independence Day to mark the films 30th anniversary. In attendance will be some of the original sound crew that worked on it. This will take place in Toronto, on July 6th, starting at 6pm at the Hot Docs Theatre.
