How to Split a Toaster: A divorce podcast about saving your relationships
If we know anything about divorce, it's that if you're not completely on the same page, you're likely going to carry some blame baggage with you into your new, post-divorce life. The size of that baggage might just determine the pace at which you're able to find peace for yourself along the way. That's why we're kicking off season seven of the podcast talking about forgiveness. You'll be tempted to hold a grudge. You'll be taunted by thoughts of vengeance. But the one thing that's going to help you get to the other side of the emotional mountain of your divorce is going to be your ability to forgive. Understanding forgiveness is all about understanding control, your inability to control your former spouse, and your ultimate goal of overcoming resistance in favor of peace. To help us through it all we welcome back our old friend Elizabeth Ann Atkins, America's Book Coach and author of more than 40 books, wellness coach, and co-host of MI Healthy Mind, the emmy-nominated TV talk show in Michigan with a focus on shattering stigma around mental illness, addiction, and abuse. We're talking about the tools you'll need to employ to forgive others — and yourself — and finding your next step after divorce. Ep. 233: Susan Graham is the White mother of two biracial children whose father is Black. She is also the author of Born Biracial: How One Mother Took on Race in America. It is the true story of how she brought an invisible population to the forefront and started the multiracial movement. Ep. 225: Whitney Yang, the second child of Debra (white of European descent) and Philip (Asian of Chinese descent), an interracial couple who met and married in the Untied States in 1974. Whitney was born in Hong Kong while her parents both worked for the United States government. She feels extremely fortunate to have grown up immersed in Chinese culture and to have attended international schools with peers of diverse backgrounds. Whitney loves being mixed and strongly identifies with her Chinese/Asian heritage. She admits that she feels most comfortable and free from judgement with other mixed race people who share her experiences. But Whitney also recalls the challenges she faced as a child and adolescent — teachers who couldn’t pronounce her Chinese name, conflicting messages from people in her environment about Chinese culture and people, racist jokes and comments made at her expense, and the constant feeling of being an outsider. Despite her international upbringing, Whitney has lived thirty years regularly being asked questions like, “what are you?,” “where are you from?,” and “what’s your heritage?”. She never knows quite how to answer in a way that makes her feel whole without being disbelieved or rejected (as she has been, many, many times). Mixed (Me)dia grew out of Whitney’s graduate studies research into everyday forms of political resistance, media representations of people of color, mixed race identity formation, and child development. Mixed (Me)dia is an online resource center for mixed race* children and adults, parents and educators of mixed race children, and anyone who is interested in understanding what it’s like to be mixed race in the United States. Ep. 220: Atheer Yacoub is a New York based comedian, writer, and podcaster. Atheer's comedy draws from her personal experience growing up as a Palestinian-Muslim in Alabama. She came to the city with high hopes of making it in a respectable career, but found herself in comedy instead. She makes her traditional Arab mother proud by standing in front of complete strangers and talking about her mismatched upbringing, her misadventures in the big city, and the psychological baggage both entail. Atheer hopes to make you laugh, or at the very least, redefine what audiences think when they hear "Arab" and "bomb" in the same sentence. Inspired by everything from Lucille Ball to Dave Chappelle, Atheer wants to bring her unique perspective to the larger comedy world in the vain hopes that someone out there can prescribe her the right pills to make it all better. Atheer has appeared on Gotham Comedy Live, which aired on AXSTV and recently taped a half-hour special for Comedy Central Arabia. She is also a writer on The Breakdown with Mehdi Barakchian and Passport Control with Mehdi Barakchian, which aired on BRICTV. Ignite 2 Impact Podcast - Raise up and Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders
Raised in Saginaw, Atkins worked hard to overcome childhood challenges, including family turmoil and abuse, to graduate from St. Joseph's High School. She continued her education at SVSU, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology. Atkins then completed a law degree at the University of Detroit School of Law. After graduation, she became a lawyer and then was appointed the chief judge in Detroit's 36th District Court for 12 years until her retirement in 2012. After retiring from the bench, Atkins wrote her autobiography “The Triumph of Rosemary: A Memoir,” which was published in 2017. The memoir – at times raw and in other passages heartwarming – addresses important topics of diversity and social change. Born to an Italian teen and a married black man in Detroit in 1946, Atkins was adopted by a black couple in Saginaw. At age 19, she sparked a racial and religious scandal by marrying former Roman Catholic priest Thomas Lee Atkins, who was white and 25 years older than she. The couple had two biracial daughters, Elizabeth Ann Atkins and Catherine Marie Atkins Greenspan, who look white. The parents worked full time, and in a reversal of traditional gender roles, Marylin Atkins attended law school at night while Tom took the high-achieving girls to lessons for swim, piano, and skiing. Both daughters ultimately completed graduate degrees. Over time, family rifts resulting from the interracial marriage began to heal, fostering harmony and healing. The Atkins family's lifestyle includes friendships and associations with people of a cornucopia of race, religion, and culture. Atkins currently resides Detroit. Her late husband died in 1990. Their daughters created a publishing company, Two Sisters Writing and Publishing, which published “The Triumph of Rosemary.” Visit https://www.thetriumphofrosemary.com/ for more information Keep in contact with us, sign up and get our free gift to YOU: https://drgenevaspeaks.com Follow our hashtag #ignite2impact Please share this podcast & let us what you think, *subscribe in iTunes and leave a review

My guests for Episode 223 are Catherine Greenspan and Elizabeth Atkins who together run Two Sisters Writing and Publishing. We're discussing the process of writing and publishing your book and what you need to know to make it a success. Elizabeth and Catherine have both published several books of their own, as well as, ghost written books for many illuminaries. Their experience has been invaluable to me as I considered the process of self-publishing my new book and I couldn't hope for two more knowledgeable and heart centered mentors to help all of us navigate these waters.
