Today we're talking about what it really looks like to go from a home to a homestead, and I get to answer a question I've been asked for years in real time: If I had it all to do over again, what would I do differently?   LFTN Stocking Exchange Reminder that the LFTN Stocking Exchange is coming up. Get it on your radar!   Featured Event: Soil Microscopy Class Soil and Microscopy Intensive Learn to look at what is actually happening in your soil and better understand the biology that makes healthy soil work. LivingFreeInTennessee.com   Sponsors Above Phone AbovePhone.com Strong Roots Resources StrongRootsResources.com   Tales from the Prepper Pantry Building new shelves Consolidating freezer fat Meatloaf is the big project of the week Processed all peppers for salsa futures   Frugality Tip: 100% Cotton Throws Buy a cotton blanket at Aldi for $15 Sew it in half and you get two throws for the price of one No unnatural plastic yuck in your throws   Operation Independence SRF sponsorship has really come through! Holler Roast is up 20% since the weeks of the fair Thanks, y'all!   Main Topic: From Home To Homestead One of the questions I get when on panels and suck is "If you had it to do all over again, how would you build your homestead?" Or "What are the 2 or 3 biggest mistakes you made early on in building your homestead?" As homestead advising types we tend to tell people to build things one at a time and go slowly so that you can get your systems working. Or we say get a permaculture plan in place first. Or we have more practical advice like infrastructure before livestock, get your zone 0 in place before you do anything else, etc All these things are true and not true at the same time What is homesteading? The eternal question, more controversial than what is off grid? (Reminds me of the how libertarian are you arguments) Homestead Where You Are Is land required? Mindset change Ongoing learning Then came the question: If you had it all to fro over again Holler Hub being developed for a year with Basecamp Lodge as the event center Fighting a type one error at the Holler Homestead where I live Acceleration of the challenges this year, remediation, health impacts, processing past grief and letting things go that hold you back (Resentment episode) So if I had it to do all over again, how would I build my homestead differently? That is a question you can't really answer unless you are doing it The opportunity The reality: move, brought almost nothing with me, sourcing all new personal items as well as transforming basecamp into a homestead that can accommodate events AND serve as a live learning model for others who want an immersive experience in growing food and health living Pros: I own the property and home Its got good bones I have the experience and connections to do this right We are already set up with a basement classroom and open concept kitchen that works great for teaching I have income streams developed I am really good at "If I cannot do x then what CAN I do? Cons: this is a normal house not a home set up to accommodate pantry, power outages, processing animals and food, gardening, etc. (Now fuel efficient) I come to this without the funds to do it in my personal checking account I am still encumbered by past messes (although fewer) that I have made for. Myself This will be very much like when I was younger on the homestead and was just starting out, only I am not, in fact younger :D Plastics So how will we start? The assessment is this week. What have we got? What do we need? How will we navigate what to do first? This may become the constant topic of the podcast or a segment - I don't really know, But it is the BUILDING of the Holler Hub in real time and I am excited to finally answer the question for real - what would you do if you had it all to do over again? I guess we will find out. But one thing is true - the one most important part of homesteading that you can never let languish - BE FEARLESS.

This episode is packed with your best economic ideas from around the world and a penguin interview. It all comes together in this final session of Summer School 2026.Pack your parka, we're headed to Antarctica. The continent nobody owns, but everyone benefits from and plenty of economic activity if you know where to look.First, we'll travel back in time to the late 1970s when NPR was a scrappy young network, with a synth soundtrack, and tons of heart. Science reporter Ira Flatow took a trip to the South Pole that put NPR on the news industry map. We'll hear an excerpt where he brings us along through what life is like on the ice, including a memorable interview with the wildlife. Then we look inside McMurdo Station, the largest human settlement and research base on Antarctica to hear from a listener who managed the store at the base back in the 1980s. Normal retail rules do not apply. We'll also speak with an economist who has estimated the continent's monetary value, while asking questions like “why put a price tag on this uninhabitable land”? She makes the case we should consider the environmental benefit as a service. But, we can't let the episode and the series wrap without marking our achievements! You did it! As part of our graduation celebration, we hear from your fellow members of the summer school class of 2026. Listeners like you who have written in from around the globe with provocative economic ideas that could make life better for all of us if we just have the will to do it. Man did you all deliver on sending in ideas. We've curated our favorites. Way better than speeches. And don't forget your totally real, but not legal, diploma by taking our short online test. Rick Alexander is a depth-psychological counselor, psychedelic practitioner, and interfaith spiritual care provider currently completing his Ph.D. in Mythology/Depth Psychology and a former Naval Special Operations combat medic. Rick was a Special Operations combat medic until a single psychedelic experience shattered his worldview and sent him back to school to study psychedelic spiritual care. He and Dr. Mike dig into neuroplasticity windows, why “good trip/bad trip” is the wrong question, and what may really be happening in DMT space. Expect to learn how a rough teenage salvia trip and a later psilocybin experience redirected Rick's entire career, what life is really like as a Special Operations Combat Medic supporting SEALs and Green Berets, why military training narrows emotional range and makes civilian re-entry so hard, how integration (not the trip itself) determines whether a psychedelic experience heals or destabilizes you, what the "third wave" of psychedelic science gets right that the DSM's "hallucinogen" label gets wrong, whether neuroplastic windows could help athletes learn skills faster, and what a brutal 5-MeO-DMT experience taught Rick about his own running form and breathing. »

Podcast #1264: Family Room - 5.1 vs 7.2 what makes sense?

    HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

On today's show we take a look at your family room and decide whether a 7.2 system is worth it over 5.1. We also read your emails and catch up on the week's news. News:  How Valuable Is TV to Smaller, Independent Cable Operators? DirecTV and EverPass reach new deal to keep NFL Sunday Ticket in bars after threatening split Other: Rage Against the Garage Door Opener (ratgdo) Family Room - 5.1 vs 7.2 what makes sense? Most of us don't have a fully dedicated theater room to fully deck out with a 7.2.4 Atmos system. Most of us have family rooms and would like some sort of a surround sound experience beyond a low end sound bar. The question we get asked a lot is whether a 7.2 system will provide a noticeably better experience than a 5.1 system. So today we answer that question. Spoiler, in most family living rooms, a well-set-up 5.1 system is the smarter choice. A 7.2 system only becomes clearly better if you have good space behind the seating and can place the rear speakers properly. Let's get into it. Pros of Going 7.2 Better immersion - The two extra rear speakers create a more continuous sound field. Sounds that move from front to back (or circle around you) feel smoother and more realistic. Improved envelopment - You get a stronger sense of being "inside" the movie instead of just having sound coming from the sides. Smoother bass (the .2) - Two subwoofers reduce bass peaks and nulls. This is often the biggest real-world improvement over a single sub. More seating flexibility -  Multiple people can enjoy better surround effects even if they're not in the exact sweet spot. Future-proofing - Many modern receivers can use the extra channels for Atmos height speakers later if you decide to expand. Cons of Going 7.2 Space requirements - You need room behind the main seats for the rear speakers. If your sofa is against the back wall (very common), the rear speakers end up too close and the benefit largely disappears. Higher cost - Two extra speakers + a second subwoofer + possibly a more expensive receiver adds significant cost. Harder placement - Getting the rear speakers at the right height, distance, and angle is more difficult in a shared family room. Diminishing returns in smaller rooms - In rooms under about 15x15–16x18 feet, the extra speakers can actually make the sound less coherent if they're too close together. More clutter & wiring - Extra speakers and cables are harder to hide in a multi-purpose family room. Content reality - Most streaming content is still mixed in 5.1. True discrete 7.1 tracks are less common outside Blu-rays Rules of Thumb for a Family Room If your sofa is against the back wall you are realistically looking at a 5.1 system since the rear speakers have nowhere to go. If you have 3 feet or more behind you, 7.2 may be worthwhile. If you can't fully afford a proper 7.2 system you will be better served with better speakers and a great subwoofer. Bottom Line For a typical family room: A high-quality 5.1 almost always delivers more enjoyment for the money and effort. Only go 7.2 if you have decent space behind the seating and are willing to spend more for the extra immersion and smoother bass. Next week should we discuss if Atmos is worth it in a family room?
