Bar Director Gianna Marcario of Darkroom joins the show to discuss the bar and cocktail program she's managing at the lauded restaurant. While Darkroom has been making waves with its food, its cocktails have taken a more subdued path to the public spotlight, due in no small part by the fact that this bar program is working without a full liquor license. This is not holding Marcario back, no. If anything it has emboldened her and her creativity as she and her team are putting out a wildly creative and delicious menu, featuring countless wonderful products, and in-house creations. She sits down to discuss her process in this new episode.Enjoy.

In this episode, we talk with Hernease Davis about empathy in the darkroom. Hearnease opens up about her use of photography to process, heal and take care of herself. The complexities of exhibiting work relating to vulnerable issues is explored as well as the topic of protection. Hernease discusses empathy in relation to trauma and the place of empathy in art history. The metaphor of walking in someone else's shoes is deconstructed in order to depict empathy in a more nuanced way. Hernease also gives advice about using photography for the pursuit of self-knowledge. What you'll find inside: “For the past ten years I've been crafting my practice to be a place where I can take care of myself. So like a psychological space and a safe place to imagine things that are metaphysically impossible in order to try and render a healing process for myself.” (3.20)“Empathy actually started as an art historical term… empathy was started off as a way of appreciating art.” (25.23)“You'll never truly know what it is like to walk in their shoes or to be them and it's ok to bring yourself in this idea of what empathy means.” (28.06)“For me what it means to be seen is what you think of me as my surface is just the beginning. Ask me some questions, spend some time do a little bit of relating. It is also the way that I try to think about others as well.” (32.17)What does photography ethics mean to Hernease?“In my experience I have had the realisation that some people take photography personally, like too personally where it becomes their identity in some kind of way… I just approach it as it just is, it is and this is what photography has done. I can talk about it as a tool that has honestly saved my life but also has been a tool that has led to so many atrocities like genocide. That also has led to how we misread each other, how we misunderstand one another.” (37.24)Links:A Womb of My Own (Mistakes Were Made In Development)A Room of One's Own by Virginia WoolfHernease Davis

But Gabe and Chris are sick of gay bros who think gay bars should be exclusively gay boy spaces. We meet Gary Schneider to discuss his photography, and his collaboration printing for Peter Hujar and other aritsts. Born in South Africa, Gary Schneider is a photographer whose early practices in painting, performance, and film remain integral to his explorations of portraiture. He strives to marry art and science, identity and obscurity, figuration and abstraction, the carnal and the spiritual. He was raised during apartheid, emigrating to New York in 1977 at the age of 22, and much of his work is informed by the racial issues he grew up with. Genetic Self-Portrait (1997-1998), for example, is a series of images of his own genetic material in which nothing identifies race. Also included in this exhibition are forensic images that use the strategies he developed in Genetic Self-Portrait.These include body imprints of himself and John Erdman, his muse since 1977, and a handprint portrait of the South African artist Senzeni Marasela. It is from a project produced between 2011-2015 funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship which realized Gary's desire to meet and make portraits of the community of South African artists thriving post-apartheid. He has been making handprint portraits since 1993 and considers them to be as expressive as any portrait of a face, more private, and perhaps more revealing. In other portraits (face and figure), made since 1988, the person lies under an 8x10-inch camera in the dark. The exposure is made by the artist slowly exploring their features with a small flash-light, over a long period of time. This traces both his and their performances and produces distortions in color and form that he further manipulates during the printing process. As mentioned in a recent Frieze article: Artist and master printer Gary Schneider was a close friend and occasional subject of Peter Hujar, the New York-based photographer famed for his empathetic photographs of artist and writer friends, drag performers, nude lovers, farm animals and cityscapes. Since Hujar's death in 1987, Schneider has been entrusted with making prints of his late friend's work, a process he describes in engrossing detail in his recent book Peter Hujar Behind the Camera and in the Darkroom (2024). More than three decades spent poring over Hujar's photographs has given Schneider an unrivalled insight into how their austere elegance was achieved. Here, he remembers what it was like to work with Hujar, the ‘eccentricities' of his prints and how their years of friendship and collaboration inspired his co-curation, with John Douglas Millar, of ‘Eyes Open in the Dark' at Raven Row in London – the first comprehensive UK survey of Hujar's photographs to date.Follow @GarySchneider7Visit www.garyschneider.net/and https://ravenrow.org/exhibitions/peter-hujar-eyes-open-in-the-dark Hosted on Acast. This episode spotlights Arizona native and film photographer Christian Marcum, the creative force behind Film Is Dead Studio. Christian shares his path from growing up in small-town Dewey to becoming a key part of Phoenix's analog revival. He reflects on his early days in the darkroom, how building a tiny home setup reignited his love for the process, and why he's fully committed to black-and-white film. Christian also opens up about his transition from casual shooter to serious artist, how overexposure changed his approach to printing, and the deeper emotional connection he finds in analog work. With a solo show and photo book on the horizon, Christian talks about what drives his art and the value of staying intentional in a fast-paced digital world. Still thinking about Sunday? Same. Because when faith is tested, God shows up—and shows off. It was our first Sunday in the gym for Slam Dunk Summer, and it wasn't just a change in location—it was a move of God. Powerful worship, a packed house, and a message from Pastor Rodney that stirred hearts and stretched faith. Have you ever asked, “Do I have the faith to get through what I'm going through?” You're not alone. From Luke 17:5 & Genesis 22, we were reminded that God increases our faith through two things: His Word and life's tests. Abraham passed the test. And when it felt like the dream was too big, the wait too long, the resources too scarce, and life too hard—God provided. Faith doesn't grow in comfort—it's developed in the dark room. And here's the good news: God's not done growing your faith. #rethinklifechurch #TheWinningFamily #GoodNews #Bible #godsword #godisgood #lakenona #stcloud #orlando #2025sermon #onlinechurch #rodneygage #michellegage #Jesus #Church #Hope #HolySpirit #learnhow #pastor #sermon #inspiringmessages #wisdom Thank you RTL Fam for your generosity! Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year. Gerry on BlueSky Scott's website The Dark Room Volume 2 from Image Comics From the publisher Gerry Duggan (X-Men & Uncanny Avengers) rejoins your favorite artists Scott & Tamra for the anticipated return of your favorite fantasy/horror/comedy series! Dounia, her ex, a werewolf, and her pal Walt, an incandescent blue skeleton, are joined by a mysterious psionicist fresh from a terrible prison. Joshua Green sits with Paris and discusses his long history with photography, starting from building a darkroom with his father as a child. He shot for his high school paper and various independent papers at UCLA. Despite his love for photography, he faced challenges at Art Center due to an allergy to the chemicals used in traditional development, which forced him to leave the program midway. Now, he primarily uses digital cameras for his photography, but Paris Chong has not yet seen much of his work and expresses a desire to view it. They also briefly mention discussing ideas for making positive changes in the world, jokingly referencing lawsuits related to water issues.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Joshua Greenhttps://youtu.be/TWzl7Ya_hfshttps://www.theparischongshow.com
