In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Sophie Bertin. You know that feeling when everything looks good on paper, a great job, supportive colleagues, a solid paycheck, but something inside keeps whispering, this isn't it! That was Sophie. She had a comfortable life, but comfort wasn't enough. It took a spark - an unexpected stat about entrepreneurs from a business school dean when Sophie was at a less-than-satisfying moment in her career - for her to realize: “Why am I in the 50% who haven't taken the leap?” That catalyzed her turning point. Sophie Bertin has a varied career path, from strategic consultancy, to banking operations, to the European Commission and now turned entrepreneur. She recently founded Serapy with the aim of improving corporate compliance training through the combination of simulations, gamification, role play and online tools. Serapy uses the latest educational theories to provide trainings with increased retention rate, and combines that with AI tools to enhance the learning process. Serapy is currently present in Switzerland, Bulgaria, Portugal, France and the UAE. Serapy has been accepted in the incubation program of the Unicorn Factory Lisbon and of Station F in Paris. In addition to Serapy, Sophie has her own consultancy (Parnima Consulting) since 2016, where she works with top legal and regulatory firms, consultancy firms and financial clients on EU Regulations in the area of Financial Services, Foreign Subsidies and State Aid. She also serves as independent board member of Eastnets, a leading provider of AML, SWIFT and payments solutions. She sits on the Remuneration, Nomination and Governance Committee. Before becoming entrepreneur, Sophie was Group Head of Corporate Development and Managing Director of SIX Group (in Switzerland), in charge of strategy development, innovation and regulatory affairs. During the Financial Crisis, she served as Head of Unit at the Directorate General for Competition within the European Commission. There, she was responsible for the review and approval of the State aid provided by Member States to the financial services (mostly banks) during the financial crisis of 2008-2014. Prior to her role with the European Commission, Sophie held senior positions within SWIFT, where she was globally in charge of Asset Servicing; with The Bank of New York Mellon; and worked with the top consultancies McKinsey and later Bain &Co. She started her career path as IT and database programmer, which is very helpful now with the latest AI tools she uses in her start-up. She started her studies in Vienna, graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, holds an MBA from INSEAD and a post-graduate diploma in EU Competition Law from King's College. She holds also a diploma from the Swiss Board Institute. She is member of the Executive Committee of the INSEAD Alumni organization, and she is also the founder and president of the global INSEAD Women in Business Club. Recently, she finished an advanced AI Mastery class and won the award for the best AI Application Builder. She is promoting and advocating for AI literacy among women and through the INSEAD Women in Business Club organizes events for Women in AI.

Stephanie Barbetta is a truly dynamic international artist from Geneva, Switzerland. Valentine and Stephanie discuss both philosophical and practical components of her work. Here's a little taste of the topics and experiences they discussed in episode 21.She always found a refuge in words. As she says, "writings take care of what bodies fear: caresses and blows. Words materialize my sensations and weave a skin that is put outside my mouth on pages. I've studied philosophy and literature in Arts Faculty at the University of Geneva to grasp myself through texts and to penetrate and analyze others' language, in their sinuous paths. I became more and more attached to styles of writing, as well as to individuals because I felt an authentic discourse that revealed rich inner lands. However, my studies lacked the body. Theatre made me realize that my body spoke more than my words in a language that no one could translate, including me. Dance and performance sketched inimitable movements. The scores can be reproduced indefinitely, but the embodiment changes each time and it's this uniqueness that animates me. During my professional training as an actress at the Geneva Conservatory and at the Ecole Supérieure des Teintureries de Lausanne, encounters with artists such as Frédéric Fonteyne, Gian Manuel Rau, Emilie Blaser, Marco Cantalupo, Olivier Dubois, Jean-Baptiste Roybon and Massimo Furlan have carved rich inner grooves. The body in space is essential to me. My visual influences converge as much with Sophie Calle, who transcends private space by immersing the public, as with Spencer Tunick, who saturates public space with a crowd of individuals, blurring the boundaries between private and public. The art in which I identify myself is an art that gives an equal importance to places, objects, lights and people, whether this art is performative, choreographic, cinematographic or theatrical. I created the substance brute project from what I call Traum-a, a place between dream (Traum) and trauma. The result is a raw, unaltered material, bringing together my creations in various artistic fields."@substancebrutewww.substancebrute.com@artmumseuropewww.artmumseurope.org@artmumsunitedwww.artmumsunited.comSupport the show
Matthew Hodgson and Amandine Le Pape detail the thought process of creating a product that isn't just another blueprint of messaging services like Slack and WhatsApp. With a clear goal and audience in mind, it took them by surprise the sudden pivot they made before even launching Element and how this has defined their niche in the messaging matrix market. Hodgson and Le Pape talk about the importance of funding when you don't need money, as they found out the hard way when they became very near to calling bankruptcy on their business. On the flip side, Hodgson and Le Pape open up on the expansion of Element and why they chose to hire talent across 23 different countries, doubling the team from 60 to 120. They also explain how they came to acquire Gitter, a messaging service, through their associations with GitLab's founder and how Element has gone on to raise over $48m in funding. Hodgson is also technical co-founder (and a Guardian) of The Matrix.org Foundation. Hodgson has been building communication solutions for well over a decade and has a BA in Computer Science and Physics from the University of Cambridge. He came up with the idea of Matrix with Le Pape in 2013 while they were running Amdocs' Unified Communication unit. Together they created a new secure ecosystem that makes real-time-communication as universal and interoperable as email. Le Pape is also co-founder (and a Guardian) of The Matrix.org Foundation, the open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication. Le Pape leads operations across the entire company. With over 10 years' experience in mobile services and telecommunications, Le Pape is an engineer that previously set up and led product management for the Unified Communications line of business within global communications company Amdocs. She has a degree in telecommunications engineering from Ecole Supérieure de Chimie, Physique et Electronique de Lyon as well as an EMBA from ESC Rennes.

It is hard to miss Pascal Morand when he arrives at a fashion show. Not only does he tower above most of the guests, but he is also always surrounded by the who’s who of the industry, designer hopefuls, and fashion journalists who all want to bend his ear about one aspect or another pertaining to the business of fashion. But that is what you sign up for when you are the executive president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. However, Pascal wears his title with the ease of someone who has spent years in the industry and knows it well. Having had paid his dues with tenures at both the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) and Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP), not to mention his time as the deputy director-general of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Paris region before his current job – shaping the future of French fashion. His years teaching and his studies in Organisational Sciences at the University of Paris Dauphine have come in handy at the Fédération where he is both helping to nurture the next generation of designers who dream of showing their work during Paris Fashion Week, and wrangling those current calendar members who are always angling for a better spot. And Pascal’s love of innovation and technology has very much come in handy over the past year when, almost overnight, all of the collections - from menswear and womenswear to haute couture moved from real-world runway shows to fully digital experiences that only exist online, on a platform that the Fédération built up to frame the virtual shows as well as enrich them with added content. Including exclusive designer interviews, round table discussions about hot button fashion topics, and in-depth looks at the savoir-faire that is the beating heart of French fashion. I spoke with Pascal before the Fall/Winter 2021 menswear collections got underway in January about how he sees the fashion week evolving in the future and, as always when I speak with Pascal, I was blown away with his overarching vision when it comes to the fashion industry. It is one of the reasons why I am often part of the crowd that tries to catch his attention at the shows.

This week’s guest on _ In the Drink _ is Frédéric Panaïotis, chef de Caves at the Champagne House of Ruinart, in Reims, France. As a child, Panaïotis spent much of his time in the small Champagne vineyards of his grandparents, sampling the fruits of their labor. His professional career began with a compulsory training period at the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne, where he studied the méthode champenoise process in general and wine clarification in particular, including fining, filtration and riddling. Over the years, Panaïotis returned several times to the Comité, subsequently specializing in the interaction of cork and wine, and training the professional panel on different tasting procedures. His winemaking apprenticeship included appointments in France and California. Panaïotis graduated from the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon with a specialization in Viticulture-Oenologie, followed by a degree from the Ecole Supérieure d’Oenologie de Montpellier in 1988. Frédéric Panaïotis joined Champagne Ruinart in 2007 as Chef de Caves. In this position, he has the responsibility of creating the blends, from the non vintages Blanc de Blancs and Rosé to the prestige cuvees of Ruinart, Dom Ruinart and Dom Ruinart Rosé. He also plays a significant role in the communication efforts of Champagne Ruinart, at times travelling extensively to international markets. “It’s great for celebration, great to go with good, great for any moment in your life.” [13:00]
