Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
We're back for Season 27, titled “Taming our Technologies: [Spiritual] Practices for a Digital Age.” This season we have a special co-host, pastor, author, and podcast host Jay Y. Kim! Jay will be joining Ruth all season long to explore the impact technology is having on our lives with God, our attention span, our parenting, our community, and our creativity. Jay and Ruth will wrestle with their own questions and wonderings about finding balance in using technology in good and helpful ways while also acknowledging its challenges. This season aims to be gracefully thought-provoking, practically helpful, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging. In order to dive right in to those big topics, Ruth and Jay are setting up the season with an introductory conversation we are calling “episode 0.” In this episode, Ruth and Jay dive into the topic of taming technology and its intersection with spiritual practices in a digital age. They discuss the complexities and emotional layers of technology's role in spiritual formation, ministry, and personal well-being. Ruth shares her long-standing interest in the subject and how technology has transformed her ministry and personal life. Jay brings his experiences as a pastor in Silicon Valley and shares a touching story about technology's impact on his own family life. Then the two do some definitional work around what exactly we mean by technology this season. Jay Kim serves as lead pastor at West Gate Church in the Silicon Valley of California. He's the author of several books including Analog Christian, Analog Church, and Listen, Listen, Speak. Jay also hosts the Digital Examen podcast and much of his work focuses on the intersection of the digital age and spiritual formation. Reading of excerpts from Dr Raghavan's essay 'The Eye of Self Existence'. The full text can be found here: https://theosophytrust.org/944-eye-of-self-existenceProfessor Raghavan N. Iyer (1930 -1995) was an internationally known philosopher, political theorist, and spiritual practitioner who devoted his life to the intellectual and spiritual uplift of human society. The only Rhodes Scholar from India in 1950 to Oxford, he secured First Class Honors in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and later earned a D. Phil. Degree in moral and political philosophy. For eight years, he was Fellow and Lecturer in Politics at St. Anthony's College, Oxford, then Visiting Professor at the Universities of Oslo, Ghana and Chicago, and lectured at the College of Europe in Belgium, the Erasmus Seminar in Holland, and at Harvard, Bowdoin, Berkeley, U.C.L.A., Rand Corporation and the California Institute of Technology. He was professor of political philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara for 21 years. His message is that a renewed humankind is now emerging, and his writings address the causes of the global situation, the nature of this evolution, and the manner in which individuals can participate fully in this collective transformation.Dr Iyer was a practitioner and member of the Theosophical Foundation and wrote that:"Initiation into Theosophical metaphysics is more than an intellectual or moral enterprise; it is a continuous spiritual exercise in the development of intuitive and cognitive capacities that are the highest available to humans, a process that includes from the first a blending of the head and the heart through the interaction of viveka and vairagya, discrimination and detachment. Even our initial apprehension of a statement of Theosophical metaphysics involves an ethical as well as mental effort, just as even the smallest application of a Theosophical injunction to our moral life requires some degree of mental control and the deeper awareness, universal and impersonal in nature, that comes from our higher cognitive capacities. Moral growth, for a Theosophist, presupposes “the silent worship of abstract or noumenal Nature, the only divine manifestation”, that is “the one ennobling religion of Humanity.”

You probably aren't letting your dishwasher do its job the way it's designed to — and you may be wasting time (and water) in the process. In this opening segment, we reveal why your dishwasher is smarter than you think, how to make it work harder for you, and the one thing it desperately wants you to stop doing. https://www.womansday.com/home/organizing-cleaning/a51170/stop-prerinsing-dishes/ Social status isn't just for the shallow or phony — it's something we all crave in one way or another. Whether at work, in friendships, or within communities, status offers hidden advantages. Joining me to explore how status really works is Toby Stuart, professor of business administration at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley, who has also taught at Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Chicago. He's the author of Anointed: The Extraordinary Effects of Social Status in a Winner-Take-Most World (https://amzn.to/421hLEO), and he explains why status-seeking is deeply human — and far more influential than you may realize. You may never have heard of your vestibular system, but without it, simple tasks like walking or even standing would be nearly impossible. It's the hidden sense that keeps your balance in check, and it's just as vital as sight or hearing. To explain how it works and why it matters, I'm joined by Dr. Jeffrey Sharon, director of the Balance and Falls Center and associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He's also author of The Great Balancing Act: An Insider's Guide to the Human Vestibular System (https://amzn.to/4g1rdhC). More and more people are asking visitors to ditch their shoes at the door. But is it really worth it? From hygiene to household health, we'll explore the surprising benefits of a no-shoes policy — and why you might want to start enforcing it in your own home. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/shoes-off-at-the-door-new_b_469245 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!!! This true story comes from Grass Valley, California—a gold-mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills—where bedtime meant being watched through a sliding glass door. The witness was barely two when a grown figure with black, sunken eyes and too many teeth stared in, smiling. Seconds before her scream, Smoky the cat shot up, hissing and arched, fixated on that same door. Mom never saw the intruder, but she never forgot the terror—or the animal's reaction. They moved out a few months later. Years later in Alta Sierra, inside her grandparents' brand-new home, a voice whispered from behind a closed closet—calling a name that wasn't hers: “Maylene… come here.” It sounded exactly like her uncle, who lived hundreds of miles away. She shouted, “I'm not Maylene!” and fled. Grandpa found no one. From then on, she and her sister never slept alone—Muffin the Siamese stood nightly guard. Was the first encounter a shadow person? A demonic mimic that steals the voices of the living? Can a new build really keep out a real haunting, or do some things follow? This episode dives into classic paranormal activity—animal alarms, disembodied voice mimicry, and the unnerving idea that kids truly see what adults can't. From the smile in the glass to a closet voice calling a cousin who wasn't there, this is a real haunting that lingers long after the lights go out. #HauntedHouse #ParanormalActivity #ChildhoodHaunting #GhostVoices #ShadowPerson #TrueGhostStory #CreepyEncounters #SpiritsAmongUs #GhostStoriesOnline #ParanormalEvidence Love real ghost stories? Ex-Hells Angels leader George Christie sits down with Ian Bick for an explosive, no-holds-barred interview. Christie reveals what it was really like to run the Ventura, California chapter of the Hells Angels for over 30 years — the violence, the brotherhood, the FBI investigations, and the moment he decided to walk away from the outlaw life for good. In this powerful conversation, George shares what life was like as a Hells Angels leader, the truth about outlaw biker culture, what it was like serving time in federal prison, why he left the club after three decades, and the lessons he learned about loyalty, betrayal, and redemption. #HellsAngels #OutlawBiker #GeorgeChristie #TrueCrimePodcast #PrisonStories #MotorcycleClub #OutlawLife #ianbick Thank you to PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring today's episode! Don and Tom dig into international investing — why diversification across borders is essential, why timing international markets is a mistake, and how currency fluctuations affect returns. They revisit Japan's lost decades, talk emerging markets, discuss John Bogle's arguments against international investing, and explain why owning all markets all the time makes the most sense. We begin with a comprehensive look at the triumphant return of Disneyland racing through the Halloween-themed race weekend that kicked off the 2025-2026 runDisney season. Our panel of runners shares firsthand experiences navigating the Disneyland expo, enjoying extensive park time during both the 10K and half marathon, and discovering how the California races differ from their Florida counterparts in delightful ways. The adventure continues halfway around the world as we visit with Carrie, who conquered the Sydney Marathon—recently designated as the seventh World Major. Despite challenging hills that surprised this Florida runner, she achieved a personal record while taking in breathtaking views, including the iconic Sydney Opera House. We learn about the unique medal design and how the Abbott World Marathon Majors program is evolving as it expands beyond the original six races. Our international tour concludes in Newcastle, England, where the Great North Run—the world's largest half marathon with an astonishing 60,000 participants—captivated both runners and the 200,000 spectators lining the course. Andy shares how this nationally televised event has become a cultural touchstone in Northern England, complete with helicopter coverage and a deeply personal connection as he continues trying to beat his father's time from decades ago.Between these major events, we explore dozens of race reports from community members conquering everything from trail challenges to local 5Ks, demonstrating that whether you're stomping grapes like Alysha or pushing through marathon training, the running journey connects us all. Born to a Japanese-American family in ritzy suburban Orange County, California, Kenny “Kenji” Gallo was a bookish, hyperactive kid who lived a double life as a car-bombing, gun-toting international drug trafficker. He owned a nightclub, produced porn movies, and was arrested for the murder of his own best friend- all before he could legally drink. Gallo graduated to life as a jet-setting playboy thug, refining his gangster style under Mafia legends, marrying a legendary porn star, and making millions in credit and stock fraud, extortion, gambling, and the sex trade. Then, after more than two daredevil decades, Gallo voluntarily wired up as an under cover FBI informant in exchange for a fresh start, nearly losing his life in the process. From 1980s cocaine cowboys, to the modern mob and its Tony Soprano wannabes, to the porn industry's dirty secrets, this riveting and redemptive memoir captures the American underworld in all its tawdry spectacle.https://amzn.to/4npx82aBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Convicted murderer William Noguera was once the youngest man on California's death row. In 1983, the then-18-year-old and his 16-year-old girlfriend conspired to murder her mother, Jovita Navarro. While in prison, he started to work toward rehabilitation. He became interested in exposing some of his fellow residents of death row. He began working to gain the trust of the serial killers he was incarcerated with. Some, like Joseph Naso, began telling him their biggest secrets.Free now after around forty years, Noguera started his own podcast, Death Row Diaries. Today marks 168 years since the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Following last year's JWHA conference in St George, Utah, I drove by the 4 monuments to the tragedy. Here is an in-depth account of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, an "unspeakable tragedy" that occurred on September 11, 1857. This episode is a somber reflection on this event, along with a condemnation of political and gun violence. https://youtu.be/5MQbBi2zhwI Don't miss our other Tangent Trips! https://gospeltangents.com/mormon_history/gt-trips/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Context and Causes of Mountain Meadows Massacre: In 1857, Utah was considered in rebellion by President James Buchanan, who sent the U.S. Army to put down the "Mormon rebellion". Mormons, having previously been expelled from Kirtland, Missouri, and Nauvoo, were on edge, determined not to be driven out again. Brigham Young, then a former governor, had directed Mormons not to sell supplies to immigrants because they were preparing for war. He also warned the federal government about the dangers on the immigration road if Mormons were attacked and had told Native Americans that it was "okay to steal from any immigrants". The victims were the Fancher- Baker party, a group of about 100-120 men, women, and children from Arkansas, traveling to California with many cattle. They were denied supplies in Utah and were in the "wrong place at the wrong time". Mountain Meadows Massacre Events: The conflict began around September 7th when Mormons, who had enlisted Native Americans, attempted to raid the immigrants' cattle. An initial scuffle resulted in a Mormon shooting and killing one immigrant. The Baker-Fancher party circled their wagons, forming a defensive fortification. To cover up the initial murder and prevent witnesses, local Mormon leaders decided to kill everyone. The party was under siege for several days, running low on ammunition and food, and being shot at when they tried to get water from a spring. John D. Lee, a Mormon, pretended to be a negotiator and came under a white flag of truce. He persuaded the immigrants to surrender their guns, promising safe passage. The men were separated from the women, children, and sick. A signal, possibly "halt" followed by "do your duty," was given. Mormon men shot the Fancher men next to them. The women and children were also killed, as they didn't want any witnesses. Approximately 96 to 120 men, women, and children were killed. Seventeen small children survived because they were deemed too young to "tell tales". Aftermath and Memorials: The Mountain Meadows Massacre is considered the "worst chapter in LDS history". John D. Lee was the only person convicted (and executed) for his role in the massacre. He was tried in Beaver, Utah, in two trials (1875 and 1876), with the second resulting in his conviction by an all-Mormon jury. He was executed by firing squad at the massacre site on March 23, 1877, almost 20 years after the event. The LDS Church later purchased the land and worked with the federal government to establish it as a National Historic Landmark. The site includes several memorials: ◦ The Overlook Monument: The monument features a wall with the names of many victims. It also has lookout points to identify the Men and Boys' Memorial, Women & Children's Memorial, and the immigration campsite. ◦ The Gravesite Memorial: Patterned after an 1859 cairn built by U.S. Army soldiers. It contains stones from the original cairn and crypts where the bones of 29 victims were reinterred in 1999, wrapped in shrouds and placed in oak ossuaries on a thin layer of Arkansas soil. A child's skull, removed by the U.S. Army in 1879, was reinterred by relatives in 2017. The memorial was dedicated on September 11, 1999, with a statement of regret from Henry B. Eyring on September 11, 2007. ◦ Memorial for Men and Older Boys: A smaller monument about two-thirds of a mile from...
Satsuki Ina was born behind barbed wire at Tule Lake, where she became one of roughly 120,000 Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II. Her parents, both U.S. citizens, lost their freedom and faith in America, leaving a legacy of silence and trauma. Today, as immigrant families are again separated and detained, Ina's memoir "The Poet and the Silk Girl" chronicles her family's journey through California's network of assembly centers and permanent camps. It's a reminder, she says, that what happened then is not just history — it's a warning about how easily such chapters of fear and racism repeat themselves.

What does it mean to be a prodigy who has to start over? Drew Hunter knows. Once hailed as the future of American distance running (he was the high school phenom who turned pro at 18 instead of going to college), his path has been anything but straightforward. The early years brought headlines and expectations, but also injuries, setbacks, and the sobering reality that talent alone doesn't guarantee success. After years of stop-and-start progress and searching for the right formula, Drew has redefined what it means to succeed in the sport. Now at 28, he's racing better than ever.Based in Boulder, Colorado, training under his parents, coaches Joan & Marc Hunter, he's shifted to a higher-mileage, consistency-first approach that has unlocked his best performances yet. Stepping away from Tinman Elite (the team he co-founded that helped change the way fans engage with professional running online) was another turning point, allowing him to focus less on hype and more on purpose, balance, and longevity. The results tell the story: a 1500m personal best of 3:33.41 in Los Angeles, a 10,000m best of 27:24.49 in California, a fourth-place finish at the USATF Outdoor 5000m, a gold medal at the NACAC 5000m Championships, and a podium at the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City. And in true Drew Hunter fashion, his very first U.S. title came back in 2019 — out of the B heat indoors.Tap into the Drew Hunter Special. Micah has taken a long winding path to get to mortgage lending. But each curve in the road has helped define who he is today. His journey started with a focus on dedication and resilience as a Division 1 distance runner at the University of Colorado. Through that high level physical endeavor, he learned that every goal, no matter how big, is achievable. Even if it's taking things one mile, or one step at a time. His next chapter took him to California, where over 15 years, he worked to navigate the fast-paced world of television production in Hollywood. There he learned to think creatively and solve problems on the fly, in the fast-paced pressure cooker environment of the television industry. Along the way, he hit the road on a solo trek on his motorcycle, and spent 3 months riding from California, through Mexico, through every Central American country, on a boat to South America, and then down to Peru. This journey showed him a humanity in all people through experiences along the way. Now, he channels that same drive and creativity into the home loan and lending process. He sees every client's situation not as a problem, but as a unique puzzle just waiting to be solved.Micah's energy is infectious, and has a true passion for adding value and pouring into others. Our card this week is Andrew Moore, the 6 of Clubs from California. This week marks the 25th anniversary of Andrew “Andy” Moore's murder.26-year-old Andy was killed in September 2000 while sleeping in his San Diego, California, apartment. The scene left behind was confounding to detectives; the weapons are missing, odd items displaced but not taken, and the one thing "stolen" from Andy shows up not too far away from the crime scene a month later. So what was the motive? Who would want to kill this fun-loving young man? And did a hidden passage in his apartment building allow his murderer to escape unnoticed?Although his cold case has remained a mystery almost as long as Andy had been alive, a new detective believes they could be close to a break, thanks to new technology. Listen to the first-ever in-depth coverage of Andy Moore's case only on The Deck! If you have any information about the murder of Andrew “Andy” Moore in San Diego, California, in September 2000, please contact the San Diego Police Homicide unit at 619-531-2293; or you can call Detective Tracey Barr's desk phone at 619-430-0134. On August 29, 1911, the last survivor of the Yahi people wandered into Oroville, California, naked, starving, and carrying with him a history and language unknown to the outside world. This episode begins with Mary and Andrew digesting the 2-1 decision from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals halting the Trump administration's ability to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan nationals accused of being members of Tren de Aragua. Andrew calls the administration's recent arguments “outlandish” before moving to the questionable legality of the U.S. military's deadly boat strike last week – an unprecedented action which left eleven dead. Next, they move to Monday's Supreme Court decision undoing limits set by a lower court on how ICE conducts immigration raids. Plus, a federal judge issues a win for Harvard University on the topic of frozen and terminated funds. Few things are rarer, or more terrifying, than a serial-killing duo. And among them, Leonard Lake and Charles Ng (aka The Snuff Film Killers) stand out as one of the most sadistic partnerships in criminal history. In 1983, Leonard built a secret bunker in the hills of California to imprison women as sex slaves and record his twisted “philosophy tape,” which began as a doomsday/survivalist manifesto and eventually spiraled into videotaped kidnappings, assaults, and murders. Alongside fugitive ex-Marine Charles Ng, Leonard Lake unleashed a reign of terror that claimed between 11 and 25 lives, including men, women, and children - some of whose final moments were immortalized on tape. Part 1 of our two-part coverage of The Snuff Film Killers lays the foundation for the nightmare to come, and unpacks the origins, obsessions, and twisted partnership that set the stage for their reign of terror.
