While technically considered anarcho punk, RP was far stranger and musically unpredictable--a direction spearheaded by singer/guitarist Nick Blinko. Blinko also produces the band's album art, giving them a brilliant and inimitable signature. This week we sit down with Jon Zipp of The Zips — one of Glasgow's original 1977 punk bands — for a conversation that doubles as an oral history of Scottish punk. The Zips' story is a strange and charming one. Formed in '77, gigging by '78, split by the end of 1980 after two small-run EPs — 500 copies of the debut, sold out in six weeks — the band lay dormant for over two decades until a record collector tracked down the drummer via the West of Scotland phone book. It turned out The Zips' records had been bootlegged all over Europe, their EPs had become prized collectors' items, and a new generation of bands citing the Clash and Buzzcocks as influences had made the world safe for them again. They've been at it ever since, complete with a "Zips USA" franchise lineup, European squat tours.But the real revelation of this episode is John's first-hand account of Glasgow's infamous punk "ban". In the late 1970s, Glasgow City Council — having decided after a Stranglers gig at the City Hall that the city "had enough hooligans without importing them from down south" — made it known that any pub or venue hosting punk bands risked losing its licence. The effect was chilling: a generation of would-be Glasgow punk bands strangled at birth, touring acts like Elvis Costello turned away on the day of the show, and a city now famed as one of the great music capitals of the world temporarily hostile to the most vital music of its era.Along the way we get John's reflections on punk's flirtation with fascist imagery and provocation, why John Lydon is his biggest disappointment (and Paul Weller one of his quiet triumphs), the surprising resurgence of very young audiences going wild for original 77-style punk, and a truly outrageous tale of how, with his post Zips band in the 80, how he blagged — via the Mitchell Library's phone books and Harvey Goldsmith's office — onto a 30,000-capacity bill at Ibrox with Rod Stewart in 1983.

Die Toten Hosen gehen auf große Abschiedstour. In dieser Folge ehren wir deshalb die Düsseldorfer Punkband und sprechen über das legendäre Konzeptalbum "Opium fürs Volk" von 1996. Dazu gehören auch Hits wie "Bonnie & Clyde" und "Paradies". Als die Toten Hosen im Frühjahr 2026 ihre Tour "Trink aus! Wir müssen gehen" ankündigen, ahnen viele Fans schon, dass es sich um einen Abschied handelt. Für die Meilensteine-Redaktion stand fest: Es wird Zeit, die Jungs rund um Leadsänger Campino zu ehren. Nur mit welchem Album? In unserem Online-Voting habt ihr euch für "Opium fürs Volk" entschieden. Es ist im selben Jahr wie "Le Frisur" von Die Ärzte erschienen – und ebenfalls ein Konzeptalbum. Einer, der Die Toten Hosen nicht nur kennt, sondern auch gut mit ihnen befreundet ist, ist Ingo Knollmann von den Donots. Als Podcastgast in dieser Folge erzählt er, dass die Hosen sein allererstes Konzert waren und ihn dazu inspiriert haben, eine eigene Band zu gründen. 1996 waren Die Toten Hosen auf dem bis dato Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere. Mit dem Album "Kauf mich!" erreichten sie Platz eins der deutschen Albumcharts und mussten sich mit der Frage herumschlagen, ob ihre Musik überhaupt noch Punk sei. Sie hatten aber auch ihr eigenes Label gegründet und damit neue Freiheiten gewonnen. Mit "Opium fürs Volk" schlug die Band eine klare Richtung ein: mehr hin zum Stadionrock – und man könnte auch vorsichtig sagen, dass sie dem Mainstream ein Stück näher gekommen sind. Das Konzept fürs Album entwickelte Sänger Campino, nachdem er auf Einladung des Abts Stephan Schröder eine Woche im Benediktinerabtei Königsmünster verbracht hatte. Campino nimmt dort am klösterlichen Leben teil und beschäftigt und sich mit den großen Fragen des Lebens – kein Wunder also, dass der Albumtitel von einem Zitat des Philosophen Karl Marx inspiriert ist. Klar wird der religiöse Bezug direkt auf dem Opener, "Vaterunser", der das wichtigste Gebet der Christen aufgreift und auch wie ein Gebet klingt. Für viele Punk-Fans war das sicherlich ein gewöhnungsbedürftiger Einstieg. Wer sich davon nicht abschrecken lässt und tiefer ins Album einsteigt, erkennt, dass zwischen der Religions- und Gesellschaftskritik jede Menge Selbstironie steckt. Während in "Und so weiter" deutsche Spießer und ihre Faulheit aufs Korn genommen werden, erlebt das Gangsterpaar in "Bonnie & Clyde" ein Abenteuer nach dem anderen – zumindest stellen sie es sich so vor. Man kann den Song als Hymne für Punks und Gangster interpretieren oder eben daraus schließen, dass alles nur eine Fantasie ist. Genau das zeichnet laut Ingo Knollmann die Toten Hosen aus: "Die Hosen sind in ihrer Art auch Punk, aber eben nicht dieses Brutale, dieses Aggressive. [...] Und das macht es dann auch aus, warum sie wirklich für viele so hörbar sind und auch Campino als Mensch so interessant und sympathisch ist." Neben den verschiedenen Themen und Lebensfragen, die auf dem Album behandelt werden, ist auch die Musik, die zu hören ist, "bemerkenswert vielseitig", findet Host Frank König. Gregorianische Gesänge teilen sich auf dem Album einen Platz mit Dudelsack, Flöten, Streicher, Synthesizer, Punk, Folk, Rock und Reggae. Und diese Mischung, die von einem religiösen roten Faden, durchzogen ist, geht auf. Cornelia Schleime (72) ist Malerin, Filmemacherin, Autorin – und, wenn man so will, auch Überlebenskünstlerin. Sie ist 1984 aus der DDR mit ihrem kleinen Sohn Moritz an der Hand ausgereist, hat ihr gesamtes Frühwerk von 100 Arbeiten verloren und ist sich bei der Neufindung immer treu geblieben. Eine Frau, die sich nie hat kleinmachen lassen — nicht vom DDR-Staat, nicht von Männern und auch nicht vom Kunstbetrieb. Im Salon Schinkelplatz spricht Gastgeber Manuel Koch über ihre Zeit in der DDR. Gleich zu Beginn wird deutlich, wie hart die Jahre vor der Ausreise waren: „Ich hatte ja gar keine Berufsmöglichkeit mehr. Also ich hatte Ausstellungsverbot, dann gründeten wir die Punkband, dann hatten wir Auftrittsverbot.“ Auch ihre innere Haltung wird klar: „Sozialistischer Realismus hat mich nicht interessiert. Mich hat Poesie interessiert.“ Sehr offen spricht Schleime auch über das Lebensgefühl jener Zeit und über Sexualität: „Sexualität hat ja auch eine große Rolle in der DDR gespielt, weil ja sonst nichts weiter passierte.“ Und über die Frauen im Osten heißt es selbstbewusst: „Die Frau in der DDR, die hat sich sowieso alles genommen, was sie wollte.“ Auch über ihre heutige Situation spricht Schleime sehr offen. Auf die Frage nach ihrer Rente antwortet sie knapp: „Ich bekomme 380 Euro Rente.“ Gleichzeitig macht sie deutlich, dass sie heute künstlerisch breiter aufgestellt ist: „Ein eingeschränkter Blick auf meine Person war über die Jahre entstanden, den hat man jetzt wieder geöffnet, auch dank der Galerie Judin.“ Besonders eindrucksvoll wird es zum Schluss bei der Frage, ob Kunst unsterblich macht. Schleime antwortet darauf mit Blick auf das große Ganze: „Was hab ich denn davon? Joshi gründete im Jahr 1997 die Punkband "ZSK". Von einer vierjährigen Pause abgesehen, ist die Band ihrer Musik treu geblieben. Mit zusätzlichen Konzerten für Kinder und Familien gelingt es Joshi, ein jüngeres Publikum für Punk zu begeistern. Daneben engagiert er sich politisch: Das Büro der von ihm ins Leben gerufenen Kampagne "Kein Bock auf Nazis" zählt mittlerweile 11 Angestellte.

John Metcalfe was born in New Zealand but he's been British based for years. He's a celebrated arranger, composer, producer and violist. His music is a unique combination of classical, pop, electronica and who knows what else. He's worked with Andrea Bocelli, Blur, Peter Gabriel, George Michael, Coldplay and U2. He's a member of the classical Duke Quartet. He's also been part of the Durutti Column, a post punk outfit. The Hackney brothers (David, Bobby, and Dannis) started out as a funk band, but upon being introduced to acts like Alice Cooper, MC5 and the Stooges, they turned to hard rock. Often described as "proto-punk," Death preceded the Ramones and has a legitimate claim as the world's first punk band.

Lora Logic is a British punk and post-punk musician. In 1977, when she was 16, she became the saxophonist in Poly Styrene's seminal English punk band, X-Ray Spex. They had a hit with “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!”. She went on to form Essential Logic, a post-punk band with duelling saxophones that released one album in 1979. 43 years later she released a second Essential Logic album together with a box set of her back catalogue. Essential Logic plays a post-punk mix of punk, jazz, reggae and funk. Her life took a detour in the ‘80s when she joined a Krishna community, became a mother, and dropped out of music for 25 years. The Pacific Northwest had a thriving punk rock scene in the 90s with bands like The Wipers, Dead Moon and Bikini Kill. One of the pioneering bands of that time is Team Dresch, which had its roots in the queercore movement. This year the band has been on a 30 year anniversary tour. Band members Donna Dresch, Kaia Wilson, Jody Bleyle and Marcéo Martinez join us to play some songs and talk about their legacy.

We recently covered the topic of "all killer, no filler" albums, but what about the perfect single side of a record? If the physical time and space limitations of a vinyl LP or a cassette must exist, why not do something compelling? Is it all poppycock...or cockypop?!? You make the call! Our Third Lad for this exploration is frontman/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Dan Voznick, aka Alec Tension from underground '80s post-punk band Afterimage. Referred to in the Los Angeles Times as "LA's Joy Division" back in the day, Afterimage created a sound that was hypnotic, skittery and chilly, but is also adventurous, playful and complex. The original lineup of the band (Alec Tension, A Produce, Rich Evac and Holland DeNuzzio) only stayed together for a couple of years and released a scant discography of one single ("Strange Confession"/"The Long Walk") and an EP (Fade In), both in 1981. Those original recordings, plus a generous helping of unreleased demos and live tracks, are now available from Independent Project Records on the new retrospective compilation Faces to Hide. Out now on double LP (available in both black and opaque white), special edition CD and digital formats, Faces to Hide proves as scathing, urgent, taut, angular and gripping as Afterimage's scarce but unforgettable output must have sounded more than forty years ago.
