It's hard to create a law about children online without first identifying who the children are. We've written a lot about the problems that arise with mandated age verification, and a new paper by Eric Goldman, The "Segregate-and-Suppress" Approach to Regulating Child Safety Online, digs into why the entire popular approach to such laws is paradoxical and broken. This week, Eric joins us on the podcast for a discussion about why regulators should develop a wider and more thoughtful toolkit of online child safety measures. Recall the calendar entries from last year, a privilege that may not be enjoyed often, and share a few exciting memorable events and achievements. The Achiever Loop starts with defining your goal clearly and has five steps to setting and achieving goals. Now visualize this goal in great detail, focusing on how it would feel and what it looks like when you have reached success. Goals must broken down into achievable steps. Gary Wilbers Advice for Leaders: Take a personal and professional stock for 2024; it'll help any positive tone you wish to set for 2025. Frame your goals within the SMARTER method so they stand clear, achievable, and time-bound. Picture yourself succeeding in everything you want to do, wherein you'll be assured that the motivation backing your willpower shall be made twice as solid. Segregate the objectives into smaller, easily achievable bits so that they do not seem to cause any pressure on you and also help you to focus. Consider the key behaviors and habits that will help you to move toward a goal. Consistency is the key: work out your everyday habits and activities to match your objectives. Follow the Habit Maker method to not break the chain and to develop habitude systems to keep a solid life. Progress: it takes time and effort, enjoy the journey, and keep going. The principle "Integrate rather than segregate" highlights the value of fostering synergies between different elements within a system to boost efficiency and resilience. When we isolate components, they often become weaker and struggle to thrive. This concept applies to people as well. We flourish when we connect with like-minded individuals who share our values. If flood waters have covered your garden, consider the produce unsafe to eat for humans or animals. If flood waters have contacted the edible portion of a crop it is illegal to sell. If touched by flood waters discard: leafy vegetables, fleshy fruits or vegetables (like tomatoes, berries, & summer squash), corn, grains, and even produce with a hard protective skin. Root crops that are ripe or near harvest should also be discarded. Record all losses. If the edible portion develops after flood waters recede it should be safe to eat. Underground vegetables roughly four months from harvest should be safe at maturity. Discard greens, wash, and disinfect in a weak bleach solution. Then peel and cook thoroughly before eating. Segregate non-flood affected crops and sanitize yourself and your equipment between fields to avoid cross contamination When it comes to food safety: When in doubt, throw it out. Today we take a deeper look at Permaculture Design Principle #8 - Integrate, Don't Segregate. This principle is fundamentally about 'stacking functions' - a common term we hear a lot in perma-speak - but what does that really mean and HOW do you go about doing it? We'll talk nuts and bolts of creating functionally redundant systems, including: Segregation vs. integration, and the energetic costs of going down one path vs. the other in the design of your homestead How building functional redundancy into your systems leads to resiliency in the face of disruptive events, and how this can lead YOU to become a more anti-fragile person and thus have a more anti-fragile homestead. Why CONNECTION is the secret sauce for 'stacking functions' HOW To Do It What Functional Design is - starting with functions first, and working towards the elements from there The importance of element location and orientation to maximize function. List all of the main functional categories a la the Permaculture Design Scale of Permanence. Maximizing function is ALL about designing relationships between things, not so much the things themselves. Become a designer of connections between elements, and you'll become a better human being in all ways. Getting started designing your homestead? AG is a passionate photographer, artist, and environmental activist from the Philippines. He has been doing large-scale murals around the world for the last 14 years. His subjects focus on climate justice, indigenous people, and marine environments. In 1999, he joined the first-ever humpback whale migration research in the Philippines and spent months at sea taking photos. Through his photographs, they were able to catalog the whales and compare them with Japanese and Russian researchers. AG explained that they can identify the individual whales through the underside of their tails, which are then cataloged and used to track the whales and determine who they are.He explains that whales travel to the Philippines and that the locals have been telling stories about them for generations. The discovery was made due to the observations of the local fisher folks, who noticed a loud, singing sound coming from the sea. This discovery is important in order to establish marine protected zones for humpback whales, as this was previously unknown. This conversation also discusses the impact of art activism on younger generations and encourages listeners to take the first step in saving the planet.Time Stamps12:08 Conversation on Marine Mammal Murals and the Inspiration Behind Them19:57 Exploring the Power of Art as a Form of Activism21:43 Achieving an Extraordinary Goal of Painting 1000 Murals23:59 Taking the First Step Towards Achieving Your Dreams27:08 Conversation on Sustaining a Living Through Environmental Activism30:49 The Profound Impact of AG's Activism Through Art34:09 The Value of Mentoring and Coaching37:38 Proposal for Painting a Dolphin in Outer Space39:03 Segregate at Home and Plant a Tree on Your Birthday–Connect with AG: https://www.instagram.com/whaleboy2000/Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/savingtomorrowsplanet/ Subscribe to Saving Tomorrow's Planet Podcast Apple Spotify

This Podcast Is Episode Number 510, And It's About How To Protect Yourself And Your Construction Business From Fraud Unfortunately, fraudsters are out there. They want your money and identity, and they're getting more sophisticated. There's a wealth of opportunity for swindlers to take advantage of people because so much of what we do is now online. There are ways for you to protect yourself, both by taking action and being aware of what's going on. While they might get less information from a small business, thieves will easily access it. If your construction company keeps any time-sensitive information on a computer network—personal information, credit card details, or other vital data—you need to ensure your cybersecurity is top-notch so you, your business, and your clients are fully protected. As a small construction business owner, you may not have the significant security budget of a large company, but you can combat employee theft and protect yourself from financial losses if you can identify red flags and follow suitable preventive measures. Here are eight ways to protect yourself from personal and construction business financial fraud. 1. Protect your identity Getting someone's identity is often the first step to running up enormous charges in their name. Scary as it is, you can go bankrupt if someone opens credit cards using your ID and maxes them out before you know anything has happened. Shred your mail and dispose of records securely. Dispose of any documents with your name or other information carefully. It may take extra time, but these small steps can save you a world of headaches. 2. Don't click on unknown links Whether sent to you in an email or via text message – don't click! It's a popular tactic for fraudsters to send a normal-looking link that's harmful. Before you know it, you're freely giving away your information. Just don't do it. Instead, take the extra step to visit a website through its legitimate homepage or call customer service if you suspect a link is a scam. 3. Check your bills With so many bills offered online, it's easy to forget to review them. Make sure to check your statements for accuracy every month. It's the only way to identify fraudulent charges and correct them. 4. Don't put your personal information online carelessly Think of this like putting the toothpaste back in the tube – it just can't be done once you've squeezed it out. The same goes for putting your personal information online. Fraudsters can use something as innocuous as your birthdate or workplace to verify your identity and expose you to financial fraud. 5. Never give up information over email or on the phone The pandemic made us especially susceptible to being taken advantage of because so much was changing at once. Extra government programs were in place, vaccination campaigns were underway, and this administration meant more phone calls, text reminders, and emails. Trustworthy institutions typically do not ask for your personal information in these ways. If you get a suspicious phone call or email, hang up and call them directly. That extra step can save you a lot of money and stress. It's too easy to fall victim to one of these scams, especially if the caller claims that a loved one is in trouble and needs help – a common tactic these days. 6. Be cautious when shopping online Fraudsters are getting savvy when it comes to tricking us online. It's not uncommon for a fraudulent website to appear exactly like a legitimate place to shop. Double-check web addresses and question deals that seem good to be true. Be aware of spelling mistakes or awkward grammar on these websites. They're often a giveaway that it's a lookalike designed to trick you into handing over your information. 7. Check your credit report periodically If you live in a region where you can get free credit reports that don't harm your credit score, take advantage of this from time to time. It's an excellent way to know if loans have been opened in your name or to be alerted to any other suspicious activity. 8. Set spending limits on your credit and debit cards Most cards can be set up to alert you of purchases, and you can set the parameters of when that happens. If someone has your credit card information, it's not uncommon for them to run through several smaller purchases as a sort of test to see if you're paying attention. Set up spending alerts so you can stop them in their tracks. A Note on Construction Bookkeeping Embezzlement/Employee Fraud Bad Bookkeepers will leave you with unfiled and unpaid taxes. They come from every race, creed, color, gender, and age. There is no definitive profile or absolute way to know which contractor bookkeeper is an embezzler until they have been caught and convicted, and even then, if you do not perform extensive background checks, you may never know it until it is too late. Just because you catch a bookkeeper embezzling funds, don't think for one minute that they will always be punished and made to pay you back. For the most part, you must understand that employees are poor innocent victims of brutal greedy business owners in the eyes of the public. I have seen bad bookkeepers ruin too many businesses, especially construction businesses. In most cases, it was Bookkeeper Incompetence or Bookkeeper Embezzlement, and in other cases, it appears there may have been some deliberate identity theft; however, I cannot be sure. What you can do: Monitor your financial records closely, and investigate if you come across the following discrepancies: Mismatched payees: the name on a cashed check doesn't match the name entered in the general ledger Identical payments: two checks have cleared for the same amount to different vendors in the same date range; one may have been authorized on the strength of supporting documentation for the legitimate payment. Questionable companies: a supplier or vendor with unprofessional invoices (i.e., apparent errors, a missing or incorrect address, home address, or non-existent web presence) FEA Cybersecurity As an accounting firm, our client's privacy and security remain our top priorities, and we are continually looking at ways to develop and evaluate our system to prevent a breach and network holes. We utilize 128-bit Secure Socket Layer encryption, which ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. There are two levels of restrictions, and passwords must be entered before you can get your data file. At Fast Easy Accounting, Cloud Security is not an option- it is a fundamental requirement. We only use Intuit Approved Commercial Hosting Services. Their Cloud Security rests on U.S.-based servers, backups, data centers, and technical support. Not one aspect of our Cloud Security relies on outsourced services or offshore locations. We have taken steps to select the best to ensure that your data is as secure as that found for online banking and financial institutions. Final thoughts It's a big, connected world, but modern technology has also made us more susceptible to fraud. However, with a few good habits and suitable tools and practices, you can protect yourself from personal fraud and continue enjoying online life's conveniences. Let this post be a reminder to watch for suspicious employee behavior. Segregate financial roles so no one has unlimited access, control, or opportunity - and ensure your bookkeeping is always up to date so any "red flag" scenarios can be dealt with promptly. Beloved. We are at an apex in our discipleship discussion and we are now going to go deeper. What does that mean? We need to talk candidly about our prejudicial attitudes, ungodly biases, and unhealthy preferences. We all have them. The question is two-fold: 1) Are we willing to admit it? and 2) Are we willing to confess it before the Lord and allow Him to free us from them? Are we ready to be honest? Do you have the time to look your faults in the face and address them? Let's go...

Gene Slater's new book is the secret history of Realtors, their role in create modern housing markets and politics, and importantly, their role for incubating racial segregation in our cities. How did Realtors manage to create a backlash against Fair Housing built around "freedom", establishing a California constitutional amendment, and laying the future of the modern right-wing?
Fair housing has never been that fair. In fact, in California at one point, realtors successfully campaigned for a California constitutional amendment that would permanently prohibit fair housing. In the process, they created the script of color-blind freedom that polarizes America on issue after issue today. Realtors helped invent “the American Dream,” while systematically denying it to millions of Americans. Gene Slater's Freedom to Discriminate makes note of racial deed restrictions, homeowner associations, redlining maps, and federal rationales for excluding minorities. These were all pioneered by America's realtors. Focusing on how California's realtors defended all-white neighborhoods against the Civil Rights Movement, he shows the thread that others followed. Ronald Reagan's political rise drew, in part, from the arguments the realtors gave to continue segregation. That rise would lay the groundwork for many of today's conservative narratives. Gene Slater has served as senior advisor on housing for federal, state, and local agencies for over forty years. Slater cofounded and chairs CSG Advisors, which has been one of the nation's leading advisors on affordable housing for decades. His projects have received numerous national awards, and in the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2009, he helped design the program by which the United States Treasury financed homes for 110,000 first-time buyers. He holds degrees from Columbia, MIT, and Stanford. Jay Reich is a retired partner of Pacifica Law Group and spent two years as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Commerce under Secretary Gary Locke. Prior to his time in Washington, D.C, his private law practice in Seattle focused on affordable housing, education, nonprofit and government finance, as well as public/private partnerships and general municipal law, for nearly 3 decades. He served as a White House Fellow in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Reich has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Washington School of Law and has published and spoken extensively on issues in public finance. Gene Slater's book Free to Discriminate: How Realtors Conspired to Segregate Housing and Divide America (Heyday Books, 2021) uncovers realtors' definitive role in segregating America and shaping modern conservative thought. Gene Slater follows this story from inside the realtor profession, drawing on many industry documents that have remained unexamined until now. His book traces the increasingly aggressive ways realtors justified their practices, how they successfully weaponized the word "freedom" for their cause, and how conservative politicians have drawn directly from realtors' rhetoric for the past several decades. Much of this story takes place in California, and Slater demonstrates why one of the very first all-white neighborhoods was in Berkeley, and why the state was the perfect place for Ronald Reagan's political ascension. The hinge point in this history is Proposition 14, a largely forgotten but monumentally important 1964 ballot initiative. Created and promoted by California realtors, the proposition sought to uphold housing discrimination permanently in the state's constitution, and a vast majority of Californians voted for it. This vote had explosive consequences--ones that still inform our deepest political divisions today--and a true reckoning with the history of American racism requires a closer look at the events leading up to it. Freedom to Discriminate shatters preconceptions about American segregation, and it connects many seemingly disparate aspects of the nation's history in a novel and galvanizing way. We are being told that if we do not adhere to the Governments wishes to vaccinate then we will not be able to enjoy the freedoms that we used to enjoy pre Covid. Vaccinate- and you will enjoy freedom, says NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian Don't vaccinate? Does that mean you are on permanent lockdown, unable to enjoy fresh air ever again, unable to go to the Doctor, unable to drive to the beach and spend the day in the sun. Forced to walk around with a tag on your chest saying 'Unvaccinated - Unclean'. Maybe you will have to announce your arrival in a public space like lepers used to do? Instead of shouting out 'UNCLEAN' while walking in public you will have to yell 'UNVACCINATED' to anyone in earshot. Then people will cross the street and throw things at you as you walk by. And so they should, after all, what is the point in having a segregated society if you can't treat them like second rate humans as well. This is all just my opinion. But I don't think this is going to turn out well.

Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services
This Podcast Is Episode Number 418, And It's About Steps Construction Company Owners Can Take To Avoid Employee Fraud Billing schemes. Skimming. Check-tampering. Employee fraud is a real risk for businesses with fewer than 100 employees. In fact, according to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, small businesses lose almost twice as much per scheme to occupational fraud. If you Google Search "Construction Bookkeeper Embezzlement," you will see thousands of hits, and most of the problems construction companies suffered could have been avoided if the owner had known about and followed a few simple guidelines. Unfortunately, until a contractor has gotten to know us, they tend to think of us as just another contractor's bookkeeping service. This means some contractors think we are crazy to suggest that any trusted employee, especially an in-house bookkeeper, would steal money from their company, and so they ignore us until it was too late. Be aware of the "Employee Theft 10-10-80" Rule Discovered over many years of experience and first-hand observation by auditors, accountants, fraud examiners, anyone involved in detecting employee theft. Ten Percent - Of all employees, including bookkeepers, will steal in a variety of ways from office supplies, petty cash, graft, kickbacks, and payoffs from your suppliers, vendors and sub-contractors and even hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. They will do it regardless of how many security systems are in place because they lack integrity and have a "taker's" entitlement paradigm that states: "It Is Better To Take Than To Make." They cannot be stopped, only caught! And only then if you have systems in place and if you can convince the criminal justice system to take action, good luck with that! Ten Percent - Of all employees, including bookkeepers, will never steal because they have integrity and a "Producer's" paradigm that states: "It Is Better To Make Than To Take." In the end, these are the people who will add so much value to your company you cannot help but reward them with more money, benefits, and recognition. Because if you do not, they will be recruited by your competitors. Eighty Percent - Of all employees, including bookkeepers, will steal if they feel confident they can get away with it and if circumstances allow for it due to weak integrity and a sense of "Redistributing The Wealth, But Not The Work Or The Responsibility." Recognize the most common signs of fraudulent activity before an unscrupulous employee destroys your construction business: Identify high-risk employees When an employee has something to hide, their behavior may become suspicious; they may act closed off, secretive and defensive. A typical clue is a worker who won't take time off for a holiday (because someone may take over their duties and discover the fraud). Others will try to cover up their improved financial status - a new car or home, for instance - with tales of a lottery win or inheritance. In addition to employees acting suspiciously, high-risk employees might also include those: struggling with debt dealing with mounting bills because of unfortunate circumstances (e.g., divorce, a family member's poor health) with a history of drug abuse involved in risky financial ventures (e.g., gambling, investments) If an employee has a motive for fraudulent activity at work, think of the following behaviors as red flags. Access and opportunity Unsurprisingly, the highest risk employees for fraud have trusted roles in financial services: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, accounting, and bookkeeping. To commit fraud, or in this case, embezzlement, an employee must have both access and opportunity - that is, access to funds, banking records, and accounting data. The ideal situation is someone entrusted with performing multiple roles; that is, they can both cut and sign checks, process AP, and handle bank reconciliations. Unmanaged Control Access is just one part of the equation when it comes to employee fraud. Also, keep a watchful eye on employees who exert control over certain aspects of their job. For instance, they may insist on: working unnecessarily long hours working outside of regular business hours performing specific job duties and refusing to share individual tasks only dealing with a particular supplier or vendor* * A common employee scam is known as "purchasing fraud" when a supplier or vendor inflates an invoice amount, the employee cuts a check, and both parties split the difference. Red flag scenarios Monitor your financial records closely, and investigate if you come across the following discrepancies: Mismatched payees: the name on a cashed check doesn't match the name entered in the general ledger Identical payments: two checks have cleared for the same amount to different vendors in the same date range; one may have been authorized on the strength of supporting documentation for the legitimate payment. Questionable companies: a supplier or vendor with unprofessional invoices (i.e., apparent errors, a missing or incorrect address, home address, or non-existent web presence) Construction Bookkeeping Embezzlement Bad Bookkeepers will leave you with unfiled and unpaid taxes. They come in every race, creed, color, gender, age. There is no definitive profile, no absolute way to know which contractor bookkeeper is an embezzler until they have been caught and convicted, and even then, if you do not perform extensive background checks, you may never know it until it is too late. Just because you catch a bookkeeper embezzling funds, don't think for one minute they will always be punished and made to pay you back. For the most part, you must understand that employees are poor innocent victims of brutal greedy business owners in the eyes of the public. I have seen bad bookkeepers ruin too many businesses, especially construction businesses. In most cases, it was Bookkeeper Incompetence or Bookkeeper Embezzlement, and in other cases, it appears to me there may have been some deliberate identity theft; however, I cannot be certain. All I know for sure is that I have witnessed business failures that have led to divorce, families destroyed, finances wiped out, and people living on the streets. In a few extreme cases, I know of contractors who have taken their own lives, and this needs to stop! Final thoughts Now that you know how to spot the most common warning signs for employee fraud, your management team must take steps to combat it. Let this post be a reminder to watch for suspicious employee behavior. Segregate financial roles, so no one has unlimited access, control, or opportunity - and ensure your bookkeeping is always up to date so any "red flag" scenarios can be dealt with promptly. The battle against the black grand abishai and the Tenebros is carried out in Mordain's Summit.
COVID19, racial reckoning, economic uncertainty, the upcoming election…. Each is a complex, impactful occurrence. Together - the challenges keep every business owner ready to take up the fight, flight or freeze reaction in our reptilian brains. McKinsey recently reported that some industries will take up to five years to recover. Others were able to pivot and navigate the new government recommendations with some success. In the messy middle are those businesses that are working through the complexity one step at a time. The small businesses have sustained most of the economic punches of this crisis. Each owner’s experience is different. So, take what we talk about today with the knowledge that there is no silver bullet, or one size fits all or a magic pill. Key Issues - Owner Perspective: Impactful steps to improve the balance sheet, prune away the dead costs, and overall profitability. This is beneficial to both selling and reinventing. Improve the company's retained earnings and position those earnings for potential ability to self finance. Prioritize and then execute fixed cost operations that can be achieved with a minimal amount of disruption, and maximum savings. Visit Mick Wienholt of Schooley Mitchell, at www.schooleymitchell.com/mwienholt, or email Mick at mick.wienholt@schooleymitchell.com. What You Need to Do The Predictive Index reported recently that 39% of CEO’s have placed strategy development as their #1 priority. The 2nd? Talent Strategy. And, the 2 are intertwined. Consider a change to the method of Depreciation - is there short term gain, or not? (Selling the Business - NO) Does this option offer long-term gain? (Reinventing the Business - Maybe). Could a change in the method of Amortization offer a reduction in fixed costs, and an increase in profit? (1) Full amortization - loan to zero at the last payment date, (2) Partial amortization - paying less over time with a closing payment of the final date, (3) Interest only amortization - at the end of term principal is due,(4) Negative amortization - less than interest only with a large payoff. Look at your company’s Insurance policies: what would a short-term shop with the lowest cost provider and reduce benefits to minimal levels offer for Selling the Business, and for Reinventing the Business. Collect data on compensation throughout the company. Look at Salaries: how would choosing to top grade all positions. Segregate and identify candidates in the bottom 10%. Designate those positions for separation or part-time and devise a plan to execute on that decision. This would be a benefit for those of you who want to sell the business. If you plan to reinvent the business, it may also be a benefit - weigh the implications. For your equipment rentals & leases: if you have multiple leases from different manufactures (1) consolidate leases with one financing agency. This would be a benefit for both selling and reinventing the company. Consider reducing all back end expenses by 10% - run a cost/benefit analysis, then decide. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ascendcoachingsolutions/message

G. Abstract: Mice require several days of training to master the water maze, a spatial memory task for rodents. The hippocampus plays a key role in the formation of spatial and episodic memories, a process that involves the activation of immediate-early genes such as cFos. We trained cFos-reporter mice in the water maze, expecting that consistent spatial behavior would be reflected by consistent cFos patterns across training episodes. Even after extensive training, however, different sets of dentate gyrus (DG) granule cells were activated every day. Suppressing activity in the original encoding ensemble helped mice to learn a novel platform position (reversal learning). Our results suggest that even in a constant environment, cFos+ ensembles in the dorsal DG segregate as a function of time, but become partially reactivated when animals try to access memories of past events. so what's the word from you If I run out of cash before the night is through If I told you my dream you'd slap me in the face So ditch that creep and I'll meet you later It's gotta be the case If you call my number then I'll set the time If you say you'll be you say you'll be mine If I can wake up to you my life would be complete But I compete on a footing unsure When I call your number You set the time If ever you are ever you are If ever you'll be mine mine all mine You'll be mine FIREPLACE MEMORIES The books are kept impeccably An air of sadness from what couldn't be And pictures grace the mantle place All rosy cheeked and freckle faced Separated tender rage She got the kids you got the cage Kids move out a big old house of fireplace memories Alright Now don't no kids mess up the floor A townhouse, baby, no back door The bank is stuffed forever more And the bills rise like the tides It wasn't nothing that you said You thought you loved her in your head In your mind together dead Your graves are side by said So hold on to your fireplace memories All that you got left can't laugh at you And that's the truth 'cause what was true Was what was wrong and now it's gone Satisfaction never comes but your standards are too high And when your gone I'll be right there until your soul floats by And then is lightening strikes you down and crushes all the past Fireplace memories won't die of all things they will last STONER WINTERTIME The cold and ragged beauty of a winter tree Struck Dawn as quite odd as she looked to see A table full of papers but none up to date No chance t glimpse beauty when you're running late A far off police siren pierces through the air But Billy doesn't notice and he doesn't care Sirens don't mean nothing in the county jail Doing time's the fine when you can't make the bail In wintertime The sun don't climb The ice it shines The world's unkind An accident just happened out on National Pike Some lady ran a red light sliding through the ice Valentines day candy scattered on the street Now my car is totaled and it's raining sleet The windows creek and moan as the wind bears down Whipping through a tree branch lying on the ground The screen door whistles loudly and the yard is froze And me I write a song and I can't feel my toes

Racial segregation is the systemic separation of people into racial or other ethnic groups in daily life. It may apply to activities such as eating in a restaurant, drinking from a water fountain, using a public toilet, attending school, going to the movies, riding on a bus, or in the rental or purchase of a home[1] or of hotel rooms. Segregation is defined by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance as "the act by which a (natural or legal) person separates other persons on the basis of one of the enumerated grounds without an objective and reasonable justification, in conformity with the proposed definition of discrimination. As a result, the voluntary act of separating oneself from other people on the basis of one of the enumerated grounds does not constitute segregation".[2] According to the UN Forum on Minority Issues, "The creation and development of classes and schools providing education in minority languages should not be considered impermissible segregation, if the assignment to such classes and schools is of a voluntary nature". www.dopeblackdads.com #SocialMedia #Podcast #Parenting More Episodes and longer content on:
Other big cities across the U.S. have been shaped by housing segregation and redlining, but did that happen here? Host Kaila White looks into this issue that reaches back to before Arizona was a state and it still impacts Phoenix today, maybe even affecting your neighborhood. Prefixes are key morphemes in English vocabulary that begin words. A large number of English vocabulary words contain the prefix se-, which means “apart.” Examples using this prefix include separate, secret and select. An easy way to remember that the prefix se- means “apart” is through the word secure, for when you feel secure you are “apart” from worrying or undue care about something potentially troubling.Like this? A little about our guests. As the name suggests, Geoff and Michelle are huge Minnesota Vikings football fans. Geoff hails from Minnesota and Michelle grew up in Arizona. They’ve been together for 20 years, married for 15 and in business for almost 5 years. They have 2 children who help out in the business. Both are dedicated to serving others and believe in random acts of kindness. A little about their business. Geoff started Viking Postcards in 2011 and started the business part-time and worked his full-time job until he grew the company enough to go full-time. Michelle came into the business with Geoff and is the face and networker for Viking Premium Postcards. In the process of doing due diligence for a friend buying a printer, Geoff learned about being a printer. Michelle was working for an existing direct mail company that was failing. Geoff created a turn-around plan for the business and when they didn’t use the plan, Geoff and Michelle took the plan, changed it to become a startup and began their business. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Communication is key. Focus on the issue, not the person. Segregate your personal life from your business life and don’t carry the argument past the office. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Ethan Hughes and we talk about Permaculture and Radical Possibilities. Ethan lives on a electricity and petrol free homestead covering 110 acres. Our conversation was conducted over one of the few pieces of technology at the site, a landline telephone located in a space that is separated from the rest of the living area. Ethan, his wife, and the others who share the homestead with them operate the on a gift economy. The short and quick way to explain this is that they give gifts freely and have others give gifts in return, though not necessarily on a one to one or quid pro quo basis, which we clarify more fully in the interview. Though it initially sounded impossible to me, they are able to do this and support 9 full time adults and 2 children on the site, while still receiving over 1500 guests through their space for tours and classes. I wanted to call this episode Radical Simplicity, but changed it to Radical Possibilities because the powerful message that came through from the conversation was the power we have to create change when we open ourselves to the numerous of opportunites available and of human beings ability to creativily solve problems, especially when guided in a meaningful way. Overall this interview challenged many of my previous notions about the personal requirements to transform the world. Many of the examples I encountered previously dealt with people who spent years saving, paying off debt, and then leaving the western lifestyle of working to live, though they retained a certain level of wealth and financial independence. Ethan made his changes utilizing non-financial capital, relying on friends, neighbors, and other contacts to do good work. He and the community he lives in made, and continue to make, choices that allow them to live freely on very little of money, but with lives full of abundance. Ethan and his community are an experiment and this lifestyle may not work for everyone. Please do not compare your life and choices to his or anyone else. Take the steps necessary to live your better life by your own making. David Holmgren's 12 Principles of Permaculture 1. Observe and Interact. 2. Catch and Store Energy. 3. Obtain a Yield. 4.
