Misha Glenny and guests discuss an ancient civilisation who lived over 2000 years ago in the southwest of modern-day Libya. During prehistoric times, the Sahara Desert was greener and even had large lakes, but for the last 5000 years it has been a hyperarid environment. Extreme swings of temperature and limited surface water might make the Sahara seem like an inhospitable place to live, but an ancient people in North Africa known to us as the Garamantes thrived there. Following descriptions of the Garamantes in Roman and Greek texts, the Garamantes have often been seen as pastoral nomads, or as tribal barbarians on the periphery of the Mediterranean world. But the work of archaeologists in recent decades has revealed something different. Evidence suggests a society with flourishing towns and cities, complex underground irrigation systems, a key role in trade routes across the Sahara – and may give us a broader view of ancient history.WithDavid Mattingly Emeritus Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of LeicesterFarès Moussa Visiting Fellow at the University of Southampton and Cultural Heritage ConsultantAndJosephine Quinn Professor of Ancient History and Fellow of St John's College, University of CambridgeProducer: Martha OwenReading list:C.M. Killarney has retained its place among Ireland’s cleanest towns in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey. Jerry spoke to Michael Gleeson, Killarney Looking Good Chairperson.
Ennis has again dropped down the rankings of the cleanest towns in the country. The latest Irish Businesses Against Litter survey ranks Ennis in 19th position, down four spots from the start of the year. The results also indicate a marked decline from June 2025, when the county town narrowly missed out on top spot in the IBAL rankings after being deemed the second cleanest in the country. Just five of the ten areas of the town that were assessed received the top grade, with Ennis deemed overall to be ‘clean to European norms'. According to the An Taisce report heavy litter levels were detected on the Tulla Road, particularly at the Certa services area, while it was noted that ‘abuse and neglect' was seen at a vacant site on Bank Place which is in need of urgent attention. Place St. Paul De Fenouillet was identified as an attractive environment for visitors and the Abbey Street Car Park was also praised for its cleanliness and deemed ‘a place to relax'. The report also stated that the public realm works on O'Connell Street ‘was looking very well and very much deserved the top litter grade'. Mary Howard, Ennis Tidy Towns Rep, and Conor Horgan, Spokesperson for IBAL, spoke to Alan Morrissey about what this report means for Ennis. Image (c) Irish Businesses Against Litter
While the hedgehog remains one of Ireland's most familiar and beloved mammals, surprisingly little is known about its current status nationwide. Studies across Britain and Europe have found significant declines in hedgehog populations due to habitat loss, changing farming practices and development, and there are concerns that similar pressures may be affecting hedgehogs here in Ireland. A new National Hedgehog Survey, a collaboration between researchers at NUI Galway and the National Biodiversity Data Centre, is aiming to fill that knowledge gap, with members of the public and farmers being encouraged to get involved. John DiJulius explains why so many leaders believe their customer experience is improving while customers feel something very different. Summary: In this episode of The Customer Service Revolution Podcast, Denise Thompson and John DiJulius unpack one of the most dangerous gaps in business today: the difference between what leaders think customers are experiencing and what customers are actually feeling. A 2026 customer experience report referenced in the episode found that 66% of CX practitioners believe customer experience improved last year, while only 17% of consumers agree. That gap is not just a measurement issue. It is a leadership issue. John explains why survey scores, dashboards, and internal reports can create false confidence. He also discusses why customer feedback often fails to become customer intelligence, how silos distort the experience, and why frontline employees are often closest to the truth but least empowered to fix recurring friction points. The episode challenges leaders to stop judging customer experience from the conference room and start getting closer to the real customer journey. Companies that want to build loyalty, reduce friction, and create a true competitive advantage must measure what matters, listen to what customers are actually saying, and follow through with systems, standards, and accountability. Takeaways There is often a major gap between what companies think they are delivering and what customers actually experience. Leaders may be investing in CX, tracking scores, and launching initiatives, but customers may still not feel meaningful improvement. Survey scores alone are no longer enough. John argues that survey fatigue has made traditional feedback less reliable. Many customers do not complain; they simply leave. Customer feedback and customer intelligence are not the same. Feedback tells you how someone feels about an interaction. Customer intelligence helps you understand who the customer is, what they need, what they value, and where friction exists. Frontline employees often know the problems before leadership does. Contact center teams, sales teams, and customer-facing employees hear recurring complaints daily. The problem is that many companies lack a system to capture and act on that intelligence. Silos create customer experience breakdowns. Departments often optimize for their own numbers, but customers experience the company as one organization. Implementation is where most CX initiatives fail. Launching the idea is easy. Measuring, training, coaching, reinforcing, and holding people accountable is the hard part. Leaders need to become their own customers. Ordering your own product, calling your own contact center, testing your own digital journey, and experiencing your own process can expose friction dashboards miss. Customer experience is not a short-term ROI play. Cost-cutting, discounting, layoffs, and acquisitions may improve short-term numbers, but they can damage the long-term experience. AI can help leaders hear the real customer voice. Customer sentiment analysis can reveal recurring issues across calls, chats, emails, and support interactions without relying only on low-response surveys. The ultimate question is not, "Are we working on CX?" It is, "Would our customers say it is actually better?" Quotes "Customer experience can't be judged from the conference room alone." "If customers are not feeling the improvement, then the work isn't finished." "Survey scores can create false confidence if they are not connected to the real customer journey." "Feedback is one thing. Customer intelligence is another." "The frontline often knows where the friction is. The question is whether leadership has a system to hear it and fix it." "EX equals CX. What employees experience, customers will experience." "Don't just ask, 'Are we working on customer experience?' Ask, 'Would our customers say it is actually better?'" "Implementation is the hard part. Launching the idea is easy." "Some customers do not complain. They just quietly leave." "Leaders need to roll up their sleeves and get closer to the customer." Chapters List 00:00 – Introduction: The Gap Between CX Perception and Reality Denise introduces a major disconnect between what CX professionals believe and what consumers report feeling. 01:58 – Why Companies Think Experience Is Improving John explains why there may be a lag between CX initiatives and customer perception, but also why leaders may be missing the real experience. 03:43 – Why CX Initiatives Fail After Launch John discusses flavor-of-the-month initiatives, poor execution, and the importance of measurement, training, coaching, and accountability. 04:52 – How Leaders Become Disconnected from Customers John explains how growth, P&L pressure, and short-term decision-making can distance leaders from the actual customer experience. 06:54 – The Role of Silos in Customer Experience Gaps Denise and John discuss how departments can unintentionally create friction when they do not understand one another's impact on the customer. 08:48 – Signs of a Customer Experience Delusion John challenges companies that rely too heavily on surveys and NPS without understanding what those metrics may be missing. 10:26 – AI, Customer Sentiment, and Real-Time Intelligence John explains how AI can help companies identify recurring customer issues through calls, emails, chats, and sentiment analysis. 11:45 – Customer Feedback vs. Customer Intelligence John defines customer intelligence and explains why different customer avatars have different needs, expectations, and pain points. 14:14 – Why Companies Collect Feedback but Fail to Act Denise and John discuss why employees and customers stop giving feedback when nothing changes. 16:51 – How Leaders Can Stay Close Without More Surveys John recommends AI sentiment analysis, contact center focus groups, and direct conversations with frontline employees. 18:41 – Becoming Your Own Customer Denise shares an example of executives testing their own product experience and finding major improvements before launch. 20:04 – How to Know CX Strategy Is Working John explains the importance of a return-on-experience dashboard, employee energy, task forces, and internal alignment. 21:54 – Consulting CTA Denise explains how The DiJulius Group helps organizations uncover friction, build systems, and create consistency at scale. 22:43 – The Danger of Relying Only on Survey Scores John explains why low response rates and incomplete survey answers can distort the truth. 23:27 – What Companies Should Do This Quarter John recommends speaking directly with VIP customers, creating a CX champion, forming a task force, and following a proven methodology. 24:44 – Closing Challenge Denise challenges leaders to ask whether customers would say the experience is actually better. Elliot Kim, CEO of Checkbox, explores why online survey tools are now largely a solved problem—and why the real differentiator lies in the company behind the product. He explains how Checkbox is building a people-first, purpose-driven business focused on trust, transparency, and customer-centric policies. DPC Is Growing in Pediatrics: Dr. Andrew Hertz on Zest's Expansion, Survey Findings, and the Future of CareThe Pediatric Lounge welcomes returning guest Dr. Andrew Hertz, co-founder and president of the Zest Pediatric Network, to discuss the growth of direct pediatric care (DPC) and results from Zest's national survey. Hertz reports Zest's expansion from three Cleveland-area practices to 10 sites opening by summer, with 13 physicians across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, and describes using annual surveys because pediatric DPC data was previously lacking and the movement is growing about 25% yearly. Survey findings include that pediatric DPC is largely women-led (about 90%), mid-career, mostly solo practices; most charge $100–$175 per child per month with panels under 250 patients; about 48% are AAP members; and many report improved satisfaction and less moral injury. They discuss DPC benefits such as reduced office, urgent care, and ED visits, challenges with insurance and Medicaid capitation without CPT codes, AI's operational promise and societal risks, and employer value focused more on employee satisfaction than pediatric ROI.00:00 Welcome Back Dr Hertz01:30 Zest Network Growth02:50 Why Survey DPC03:49 Who Joins DPC05:06 Boards and MOC Debate09:31 AAP Membership Questions13:54 Why DPC Is Rising18:22 AI vs EHR Efficiency22:03 Insurance and Capitation25:14 Hybrid Models and Access29:08 Costs and Who Can Afford32:45 Medicaid Capitation Hurdles35:06 Data Without CPT Codes36:24 Data Without Red Tape37:07 ICD-10 and Simple EMRs38:23 Holistic Prevention Coaching41:32 Defining DPC Success42:43 Net Promoter Score Explained46:10 NPS for Behavior Change49:19 Storytelling to Drive Adoption55:53 AI in Pediatrics Promise and Peril01:03:21 Beyond DPC Payment Models01:06:15 Employers and Care Navigators01:09:24 Closing Thoughts and Growth01:11:31 Podcast OutroSupport the show
Most of us think of questions as something we ask other people. Dr. Marilee Adams has spent years showing the opposite: the most consequential questions we ask are the ones we ask ourselves. Adams, founder of the Inquiry Institute and author of the half-million-copy bestseller Change Your Questions, Change Your Life, (a new 5th edition has just been published) joins us to make us smarter about our internal questioning. She introduces us to two mindsets that live inside all of us — Judger and Learner — and the Choice Map™ that helps you notice which one is driving the bus. The conversation takes her work directly into the world of retirement, where Judger questions (What do I regret?, What do I resent?) can quietly shape our moods, relationships, and the texture of later life. But Learner questions (What would be meaningful next?, What does my heart want me to do?, What can I contribute?) open up possibilities for a different future. Along the way, Adams explains the physiology underpinning the two mindsets, and a single powerful question: Who do I choose to be in this moment? that she returns to again and again. She also introduces us to the five-to-seven-second “Stop, Breathe, Be” practice that can shift your nervous system anytime (from The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience by Aditi Nerurkar, MD). If you’re thinking about designing the non-financial side of your next chapter, or looking to enhance your life in retirement, this is an episode worth re-listening to with a notebook in hand. _________________________ For More on Marilee Adams, PhD Change Your Questions, Change Your Life, 5th Edition Take the Survey & Download The Choice Map™ The Inquiry Institute __________________________ Bio Dr. Marilee Adams is an award-winning author, executive coach, and leadership consultant whose work has shaped how leaders think, communicate, and make decisions for more than four decades. She is Founder and CEO of the Inquiry Institute, a leadership development and organizational consulting firm dedicated to building inquiry-based cultures that accelerate results and deepen engagement. Its executive coaching, training, keynotes, and eLearning programs — all grounded in Question Thinking™ — are used by Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, healthcare systems, and universities worldwide. Her book Change Your Questions, Change Your Life has sold more than half a million copies worldwide and been translated into 26 languages. Now in its 5th edition, it remains one of the most enduring frameworks for mindset shift, leadership development, and human performance — and its newest edition addresses one of the defining challenges of our moment: how to lead and think with wisdom, curiosity, and connection in an age of artificial intelligence. At the heart of Dr. Adams’ work is a deceptively simple insight: the questions we ask — of ourselves and others — shape everything. They determine the quality of our thinking, our relationships, our decisions, and our cultures. In a world increasingly mediated by technology, the human capacity for inquiry is not just a leadership skill. It’s a competitive advantage — and an essential one. Dr. Adams has coached senior leaders and advised organizations internationally and is a recognized pioneer in inquiry-based coaching and organizational transformation. She speaks and teaches worldwide, helping leaders use Question Thinking™ everywhere it matters most. __________________________ Wise Quotes On the Two Mindsets “We’re always asking ourselves questions that affect our moods, that help with our decisions, and also make a difference in whether we have a positive quality mindset or the opposite. All of us human beings have two mindsets. We always will have them — which means they are normal…The more we accept our Judger, the more acceptance and forgiveness and empathy come online. That helps you open your heart to yourself and to others.” On Questions “Typical Judger questions in later life are: How can I just fill up my time? What would keep me from being bored? What do I regret or resent about the past? Learner questions sound different: What would be meaningful and satisfying for me going forward? What does my heart want me to do next? What can I contribute? What would be fulfilling? People who are more in Learner mindset literally live longer and have better quality lives. People who are past-oriented, regretful, resentful, live not as long and not as fulfilling. On Retirement “When you think about retirement, what’s exciting is to be open to the future and not get stuck in the past. Now you’re talking about creating a future that is intentional, and fulfilling, and healing.” _________________________ Retirement Podcast Conversations You’ll Also Love The Second Fifty – Debra Whitman Thinking Better to Live Better – Dr. Woo-kyoung Ahn The Mindful Body – Ellen Langer ________________________ About The Retirement Wisdom Podcast There are many podcasts on retirement, often hosted by financial advisors with their own financial motives, that cover the money side of the street. “There is a pretty powerful strain in America today in which men feel some need to be violent and domineering to sort of prove their masculinity. And there's sort of less intense but still prevalent strains that infect many other types of men.” — Jasper Craven Today is Memorial Day — America's annual celebration of its warriors and military ethic. But for Jasper Craven, author of God Forgives, Brothers Don't: The Long March of Military Education and the Making of American Manhood, it should be a day of muted self-reflection rather than bellicose celebration. Especially in May 2026 with America involved in another ludicrous overseas war. Craven's argument is that from George Washington onwards, America has fused military manliness with a self-destructive masculine identity. Thus young men are trained at top military academies like West Point to be unthinkingly domineering and violent. But for Craven, America — a continent surrounded by oceans to the east and west and by friendly neighbours to the north and south — has no need for the unreflective militarism fetishised by its military academies and culture. So what has West Point wrought? A nation of Pete Hegseths, Jasper Craven implies. Happy (ie: peaceful) Memorial Day everyone. Five Takeaways • Military Manliness and American Identity: From Washington to Hegseth: From the Founding Fathers — most of whom were Revolutionary War veterans — America has explicitly fused military manliness with core masculine identity. Boys who want to define themselves as Americans have felt a need to be strong, to serve, to defend. The archetype has only been beefed up over time: through the steroid era and into the world of Navy SEALs and special operators. The result is a culture where men feel the need to be violent and domineering to prove their masculinity, from carrying AK-47s to protests to becoming ICE agents. The problem: the archetype has no relationship to actual national security needs. • West Point and the Civil War: A Fuse, Not a Remedy: West Point was created to produce a well-schooled officer class. What Craven argues: when you allocate massive resources to building a military, you will feel the consequences. Before the Civil War, West Point was segregated into northern and southern companies — which exacerbated tensions rather than building union. When war broke out, many West Point officers defected to the Confederacy, including Robert E. Lee, who had been superintendent. West Point officers on opposite sides then killed each other in their thousands. Many lawmakers called for West Point to be abolished. They were not heeded. • Race, Integration, and the Military's Complex Legacy: Craven acknowledges the military's partial role in racial integration: Truman's executive order in 1948 desegregated the armed forces, which was a genuine milestone ahead of civilian institutions. But he is careful about what this means. Integration at the institutional level did not eliminate racism within the culture. And the same military that desegregated also produced the culture of violence, dehumanisation of the other, and misogyny and homophobia that Craven chronicles throughout the book. Partial credit is still only partial credit. • January 6th and the Politicisation of the Officer Class: In Trump's first term, General Mattis and General Kelly and others demonstrated real courage in reining in Trump's worst impulses. By the end of that term, they had all been replaced by loyalists. During the transition to Biden, Trump's military cronies at the Pentagon went dark. January 6th was largely carried out by military veterans. More than 100 senior retired military officers penned an op-ed supporting what Trump had done. In Trump's second term, the politicisation of the officer class has only accelerated. The non-political professional officer class is now divided. • ROTC, Not West Point: Craven's Prescription: Craven's preferred model: ROTC — military training supplemental to traditional liberal arts education. Survey data shows ROTC officers, because of exposure to Plato, Shakespeare, and the rest, are more well-rounded and better thinkers than West Point graduates. At West Point, it is essentially all STEM. Craven's prescription: introduce the humanities, expose cadets to civilians, break the silos. Ideally, West Point could become a national university that includes military programmes alongside the training of doctors and aid workers. The military-civilian divide is as much the military's creation as the civilian's. About the Guest Jasper Craven is a freelance reporter covering the military and veterans' issues. Security operations for MSPs are undergoing a structural shift from simply deploying additional tools to establishing a liability-focused accountability model, where the ability to provide operational evidence of controls is becoming as critical as the tools themselves. This shift is catalyzed by corporate insurance, procurement, and third-party verification structures—such as those cited by WatchGuard, Assurix, and the NIST AI cybersecurity overlays—demanding verifiable security outcomes and alignment with external standards, rather than relying on provider assertions alone. Survey data referenced from Cybersmart and Beta News reveals that 75% of MSPs experienced at least one breach in the past year, while 54% endured multiple incidents; concurrently, SMB buyers state security is a top priority, but only 13% of microbusinesses operate proactively. According to WatchGuard's global survey of 842 professionals, 94% of clients using dedicated MSPs feel adequately protected, yet 58% indicate intent to change providers within three years—highlighting a disconnect between perceived and delivered value. The emergence of Assurixs' live MSP Trustmark, based on 64 operational controls, further formalizes evidence requirements as market prerequisites. These dynamics are reinforced by shifts in insurer behavior and regulatory alignment. Huntress and Acrisure are collectively rolling out a cyber insurance package contingent on adoption of Huntress's managed detection and response, explicitly tying coverage eligibility to verifiable provider-side controls. The maturing of NIST's AI cybersecurity overlays introduces new standardized control checklists likely to become operational requirements. Additionally, reports from Omdia and MSP Channel Insights note that vendor ecosystems are now rewarded for integrating security as an outcome with automation and multi-tenant integration—reflecting market demand for reliable, defensible evidence of controls. For MSPs and IT leaders, these developments drive the need to restructure contracts to clearly delineate evidence obligations, manage liability exposure, and price evidence production as a formal deliverable rather than as unreimbursed support. Failing to do so risks absorbing unfunded post-incident evidence work, margin erosion, and loss of control over the security value conversation. Operationally, maintaining live accreditations, standing up a formal evidence management function, and explicitly excluding unmanaged SaaS, identity, and AI workflows from baseline service tiers are becoming necessary to maintain profitability and accountability. 00:00 Breach, Then Switch 04:52 SaaS Blind Spot 07:16 Prove or Pay 10:24 Why Do We Care? Institutional Control and Double Standards: Garment History Historically, members had the freedom to make their own garments from approved patterns or mark their own store-bought underwear. Over time, the patriarchal institution tightened its control, eventually establishing Beehive Clothing as the sole approved manufacturer and cutting off personal production avenues. Nancy Ross & Jessica Finnigan shared their survey findings with the LDS Church’s correlation research division, whose researchers were shocked by several revelations. Most notably, they were surprised to learn that the physical toll of wearing garments was the primary reason some women left the Church, completely flipping the standard narrative that members leave due to a loss of faith or taking offense. Researchers were also struck by the finding that poorly fitting garments caused severe psychological distress, leading some women to believe their bodies were simply “not good enough for God.” https://youtu.be/4ekThFV0xRQ Don't miss our other conversations Nancy Ross: https://gospeltangents.com/people/nancy-ross/ Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved CHAPTERS 0:00 How LDS Researchers Received the Survey on garments 5:55 Making Your Own Garments 13:59 Evolution of garments The authors also highlight a stark historical double standard regarding modifications: the Church readily accommodated military men by creating new khaki or colored garments for their uniforms, but when women requested design changes for health or physical comfort, their concerns were frequently dismissed as secular “vanity”. Century of Design Evolution: Garment History The segment traces the slow arc of garment modernization: 1923 Updates: The Church allowed stretchy, knitted fabrics for the first time, shortened sleeves to the elbow and legs to the knee, and replaced string ties with buttons. 1930s Internal Report: The church commissioned a report to gauge members’ desires for further updates. While many suggestions were adopted, the push for sleeveless garments was rejected. The Swimsuit Designer (1960s–1979): Church President David O. McKay consulted Rosemary Reid, a famous swimsuit designer, to help make garments look less like 19th-century “polygamy underwear.” Reid emphasized that women desperately needed two-piece options, a design the church eventually adopted and distributed in 1979 and 1980. Modern Tweaks (2010s–Present): The Church has introduced further modernizations like period garments, half-slips, and sleeveless options. However, the authors note that the constant minor “tweaking” of lengths and materials causes frustration for members who struggle to find a consistent fit when buying new garments. Ramesses and Hattusili (Part 2). After the marriage to a Hittite princess in Year 34, Ramesses II had much to offer his northern family. A visit from the King of Hatti's son, seeking food supplies, may relate to repeated hunger crises in Syria and Hatti. Pharaoh's support brought the two kingdoms closer together, although we must wonder if the Bronze Age Collapse has now begun... What if the hardest part of manifestation isn't getting what you want, but feeling worthy enough to deserve it? In this deeply expansive episode, Jessica welcomes Alexis Marie West for a conversation on manifestation, generational healing, boundaries, and the art of truly receiving. Alexis shares her remarkable journey from growing up amidst addiction, instability, and survival-mode conditioning to manifesting a peaceful dream home, financial security, creative freedom, and authentic self-worth. Together, they unpack the uncomfortable integration phase that happens after manifestations land, the emotional reality of setting boundaries with loved ones, and how reclaiming creativity becomes the gateway back to your authentic self. This episode is a powerful reminder that healing isn't about perfection—it's about choosing yourself again and again until your external reality finally reflects the safety and abundance you've always deserved.
