(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Ukraine targeting Orthodox Church with raids and arrests A human rights division of the United Nations is warning about religious freedom violations in Ukraine. The U.N. has documented 10 cases of violence between different Orthodox communities in the country since last February, noting Ukrainian law enforcement officials have not protected church members. Ukraine is also considering legislation to dissolve religious organizations with ties to countries like Russia. Leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church accuse Ukraine of trying to annihilate it for its previous connection to Russian church bodies. Since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Ukraine has targeted the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with hundreds of raids and investigations as well as house arrests. Russia restricting abortion Speaking of Russia, the country is moving to restrict abortion in recent months.  Two Russian regions now have laws against influencing women to have abortions. Authorities are also restricting the sale of abortion drugs. However, abortion is still broadly legal and accessible in the country.  Calls by the government and the Russian Orthodox Church to curtail abortion come as the country faces demographic decline. Russia, under the Soviet Union, was the first country in the world to legalize abortion in 1920. Pope strips conservative cardinal of salary and housing The Roman Catholic pope continues to crack down on his conservative critics. Last week, Pope Francis announced he is stripping Cardinal Raymond Burke of his Vatican-subsidized housing and salary. Burke was known for opposing sexually perverted lifestyles and abortion. He is the second American clergy member to face removal by the pope recently. Earlier this month, Francis removed Bishop Joseph Strickland of Texas. Like Burke, Strickland is considered a conservative critic of the pope. Biden's foster care rule targets Christians Eighteen Republican attorneys general in the U.S. are calling out the Biden administration for a new foster care rule that targets Christians. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a rule to prohibit families who oppose sexually perverted lifestyles from participating in the foster care system. The attorneys general sent a letter to the department on Monday. One of them is Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. He said, “Since the first century, Christians across the globe have answered the call to provide a home and a family to children who had neither. Alabama boasts a particularly strong faith-based foster care and adoption community, and I will fight this Administration for them every step of the way.” James 1:27 says, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” Disney wishes “Wish” wasn't a flop Disney films continue to flop at the box office. The company's latest offering, Wish, brought in only $31.7 million last week. That's well below the $45 to $50 million pre-release expectations. Wish joins other flops this year like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Secret Invasion. Those four releases cost Disney a billion dollars. The losses also come as Disney waded into the cultural wars in support of sexually perverted lifestyles.  Amazon's biggest delivery business Amazon is now the biggest delivery business in the U.S. Last year, the company delivered more parcels than UPS. It had already outpaced FedEx in 2020.  Amazon's edge is only projected to grow this year as it expects to ship a total of 5.9 billion packages. The U.S. Postal Service remains the biggest parcel service which handles packages for all three companies.  Largest iceberg is 1,500 square miles in size And finally, Earth's biggest iceberg is on the move after being stuck to the ocean floor for over 30 years. Known as A23a, the iceberg is about 1,500 square miles in area and over 1,000 feet thick! It split from the Antarctic coast in 1986 before becoming grounded in the Weddell Sea. For years, A23a became what the BBC described as an “ice island.” Scientists aren't sure exactly why it's moving again. But nearby currents will likely send the iceberg into the South Atlantic. Loose icebergs are more than melting chunks of ice. The BBC notes they're also important sources of mineral nutrients for ocean life. God asks in Job 38:29-30, “From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the frost of heaven? Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the six-member majority to undo the lasting impacts of the landmark 1978 case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, which upheld race-conscious admissions at universities. "Harvard’s and UNC’s admissions programs violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment," the majority held in Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College. Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented and was joined by Justice Elena Kagan. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented in the UNC case, joined by Sotomayor and Kagan. Jackson recused herself from the Harvard case due to her past service on the university board. Justices have been mulling since November over two cases brought by the nonprofit group Students for Fair Admissions, headed by conservative legal strategist Edward Blum, a staunch critic of affirmative action policies. The majority held that "nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant's discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise. But, despite the dissent's assertion to the contrary, universities may not simply establish through application essays or other means the regime we hold unlawful today." Justice Clarence Thomas added that he would "highly doubt" universities could carry on with considering race in admissions policies with the new test that was established Thursday. “In the future, universities wishing to discriminate based on race in admissions must articulate and justify a compelling and measurable state interest based on concrete evidence. Given the strictures set out by the Court, I highly doubt any will be able to do so." During oral arguments in October 2022, the court's inclination to ban affirmative action was evident. The court's six conservatives expressed skepticism toward the practice, even as attorneys for Harvard and UNC, along with U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, implored the court to permit the practice to continue. Another case filed in 2014 alleged the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill unlawfully discriminates against white and Asian American applicants. That suit accused the university of violating the Constitution's 14th Amendment promise of equal protection under the law. Banning the use of affirmative action will force elite colleges to reinvent their policies and find new ways to ensure diversity in their student populations without using race as a consideration. Several universities have expressed concerns in legal briefs that a decision to overturn affirmative action could result in fewer minority students on campuses. But ahead of the high court's opinion release, legal experts speculated colleges might attempt to maintain a superficial vision for diversity on campus without taking race into consideration. The matter of race-neutral admissions policies that are implemented for racially conscious ends could find its way to the Supreme Court soon. A group of parents, alumni, and community members at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax, Virginia, sued the school for changing its admissions process to increase the number of black and brown students and decrease the number of Asian students. The U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the school's new process did not violate federal law. The case's next stop would be the Supreme Court. https://www.npr.org/2023/06/29/1185087587/google-says-it-will-start-blocking-canadian-news-stories-in-response-to-new-law Google says it will start blocking Canadian news stories in response to new law Google said on Thursday that it will block all links to Canadian news articles for people using its search engine and other services in the country in response to a new law that would compel tech companies to pay publishers for content. It comes a week after Meta vowed its own blackout of Canadian publishers on Facebook and Instagram, calling the law "fundamentally flawed." The two tech giants have been battling the Canadian government over the law that would force them to negotiate compensation deals with news organizations for distributing links to news stories. The law, called the Online News Act, passed last week. But it could take months for it to take effect. Once it does, Google and Meta say they will start removing news articles by Canadian publishers from their services in the country. Supporters of the legislation have argued that it could provide a much-needed lifeline to the ailing news industry, which has been gutted by Silicon Valley's ironclad control of digital advertising. Under the law, platforms like Meta and Google would have to come to the negotiating table with news organizations and hammer out compensation deals. Government estimates predict that the law would result in a cash injection of some $329 million into the Canadian news industry, which has been beset by news staff layoffs and other downsizing in recent years. Canada's law was modeled on a similar effort in Australia, where Meta did block news articles for nearly a week before tense negotiations led Meta and Google to eventually strike deals with news publishers. A bill to force tech companies to pay publishers is also advancing in California, where the tech industry has levied similar blackout threats. In Canada, both tech platforms have long been against the law, saying the companies are already helping news companies by directing web traffic to their sites. On Facebook and Instagram, news represents a tiny fraction — on Facebook, it's about 3% — of what people see every day. Google, too, does not consider news articles as essential to its service. So both companies have wagered that it is simply easier to block links to news articles than to start paying news organizations. While most major publishers in Canada back the new law, outside media observers have not been so sure. Tech writer Casey Newton has argued that a tax on displaying links would "effectively break the internet" if it was applied to the rest of the web. Other critics have pointed to the lack of transparency over who actually would receive cash infusion from the tech companies. Some fear the programs could be hijacked by disinformation sites that learn how to game the system. Yet press advocates insisted that tech companies retaliating by threatening to systemically remove news articles will be a blow to civil society and the public's understanding of the world. "At a moment when disinformation swirls in our public discourse, ensuring public access to credible journalism is essential, so it's deeply disappointing to see this decision from Google and Meta," said Liz Woolery, who leads digital policy at PEN America, an organization that supports freedom of expression. The Tale of Two Russian Occupations: Georgia and Ukraine – Russian Roulette Episode 115   In this episode of Russian Roulette, Heather sits down with Mykola Bielieskov, Ph.D. student at the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISS), Ukraine, and Natia Seskuria, associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).  We discuss the effectiveness and shortcomings of Russia's hard and soft power influence tools in Georgia and Ukraine, including its “borderization” policy in Georgia, its “passportization” in Donbas, and the role of the Orthodox Church. Finally, we finish the conversation with recommendations regarding how the West can resist the challenges presented by Russia's occupation of Georgia and Ukraine's territories. Both Natia and Mykola participated in CSIS “Understanding the Russian Military Today” executive education program in June and this episode is inspired by their papers written as part of their independent research. Liya Milushkina and Artyom Milushkin are a well-known pair in the Pskov region. Liya managed the local branch of the opposition movement "Open Russia," and Artyom attended and organized protests, too. In January 2019, SWAT police raided their home, terrifying the couple's two small children. The authorities arrested Liya and Artyom on suspicion of felony drug trafficking and later charged Milushkin with organizing a series of arson attacks, as well. The Milushkins maintain their innocence and argue that the case against them is politically motivated. On August 12, 2021, a judge sentenced Artyom to 11 years in a maximum-security prison and sentenced Liya to 10.5 years in prison, which she won't begin until 2024, while she cares for their children. After the court's decision was announced, Artyom Milushkin ripped a bench from the courtroom floor and threw it in a fit of rage. He won't be home with his kids again until they're in their 20s. Senate aides said U.S. senators will announce a bill this week expanding sanctions on Russia’s Gazprom-led Nord Stream 2 project, targeting a pipeline Washington says will make Europe too reliant on Russian gas. The Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Clarification Act follows legislation signed by President Donald Trump last year, which prompted Swiss-Dutch company Allseas to halt undersea work. Two Russian-owned pipe-laying vessels may now be used to finish the remaining 100 miles (160 km) of the project, led by state-run Gazprom. The new legislation, spearheaded by Senators Ted Cruz, a Republican, and Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat, would expand sanctions to include penalties on parties involved in pipe-laying activities, not just laying pipes, and parties providing underwriting services, insurance or reinsurance for vessels. Two Russian planes had been blown up and a major Moscow subway station had been the site of a deadly terror attack. According to the Russian press, three Chechen women – roommates – were responsible for the plane and subway bombings. But there was a fourth roommate, believed to be at large in Moscow, who had gone missing. It turned out that I bore a resemblance to that woman. Everywhere I went, I was met with glares, stares, and harsh words. Back home in the post-9/11 U.S., the mainstream press and popular culture depicted terrorists as people who looked very different from me. So, it was a shock to find myself in the role of the feared “other,” presumed guilty, presumed to be a terrorist.
