A quick warning before listening: in this episode we're talking about female genitals, in quite a lot of detail.Brazil has the highest number of plastic surgery operations in the world and it's where the BBL, Brazilian Butt Lift, comes from. It's also seeing a spike in demand for another procedure: labiaplasty; where the labia minora (the folds of skin either side of the vulva) are reduced in size. There's been a 15% rise in this kind of surgery in the last 4 years, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. And Brazil comes top in terms of the number of labiaplasties carried out - over 28,000 last year. Why are women getting this procedure done? Giulia Granchi from BBC Brasil explains. The idea of a “perfect vulva” is not new - it's been portrayed a certain way since sculptures in ancient Greece. Zoe Williams from the Vagina Museum in London explains the history of this idea - and why porn and social media has made it worse. And we hear about two projects; the Labia Library in Australia and the Great Wall of Vulva (formerly the Great Wall of Vagina) by British artist Jamie McCartney, both with the aim of demonstrating the huge range of shapes and sizes of women's genitalia. Plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell Aston, who uses FaceTite or AccuTite as a complementary procedure with almost every facelift he does, joins Dr. Bass in the 4th episode of our series "Lifting Without Cutting," to discuss how it delivers more complete rejuvenation. Dr. Aston often pairs these bipolar radiofrequency treatments with face and neck lifts to address what surgery alone cannot, such as wrinkles or localized areas of laxity. While FaceTite and AccuTite are in a large class of devices using radiofrequency energy to heat and remodel tissue, they stand out because they deliver far more energy to the underlying tissue and can be more precisely customized to each patient's needs. A wide range of people can benefit from these treatments, from young patients with some skin laxity who aren't ready for surgery to post-facelift patients who want to touch up their results.  Patients appear visibly tighter and more contoured almost immediately after FaceTite or AccuTite, but the results don't stop there. Improvements in tightness and overall skin quality continue over the following months as new collagen continues to build. Hear Dr. Aston and Dr. Bass discuss how this cutting edge non-surgical treatment is done, best candidates, what's involved in terms of the experience and recovery, and how it's shaping the future of aesthetics.   About Dr. Sherrell Aston Dr. Sherrell Aston is a professor of plastic surgery at New York University School of Medicine, a past president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and was the chair of plastic surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital for 23 years. Facelift surgery has come a long way since the 1980's, amplifying the degree of correction and preserving a natural look. Dr. Sherrell Aston, a leader in facelifting, joins Dr. Bass to discuss the evolution of facelift techniques and how they are customized to each patient. In the last 40 years, the focus has moved from lifting the skin to altering the underlying foundation, removing excess skin, and redraping over a changed foundation in the face, cheeks, neck, and jawline.  Today, the facelift is often combined with other treatments for well-rounded, dramatic, long-lasting results. It can be complemented with fat transfer into areas of the face with lost volume, or radio frequency technology such as FaceTite or AccuTite or Morpheus8 to improve the quality of skin. While the facelift/necklift is the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, there's not a single best technique for how that procedure is performed.  The approach is customized to every patient not cookie cutter. Hear about current controversies in facelift technique from the experts. Learn more about the various facelift techniques Drs. Bass and Aston use regularly, in what circumstances they find a mini facelift or neck lift alone to deliver meaningful results, and why they advise against getting continuous filler treatments when it's time for surgery.   About Dr. Sherrell Aston Dr. Sherrell Aston is a professor of plastic surgery at New York University, a past president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and was the chair of plastic surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital for 23 years. Please keep me anonymous. Keep up the great work. Well Mr. Anonymous thanks for the donation and I'm sure you'll enjoy today's zinger. There's an article on Yahoo news called: "Workers from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are paying $75,000 to be taller, a surgeon told GQ" and here's what the article says and I quote: "The Las Vegas surgeon can lengthen patients' legs via a painful months-long process. He breaks the thigh bones and inserts nails that are extended every day for three months. A Las Vegas cosmetic surgeon who specializes in leg-lengthening procedures that can extend people's height by 3 to 6 inches told GQ magazine that many of his patients are tech workers. Kevin Debiparshad founded LimbplastX Institute in 2016, and the clinic's business has boomed during the pandemic, he told GQ. It can take months to slowly lengthen the bones and for the legs to heal. One software engineer told GQ he spent the first three months after his surgery alone in his apartment and ordered delivery food during that time to go from 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9. The procedure costs between $70,000 and $150,000, depending on whether the patient wants to grow 3, 4, 5, or 6 inches. The common denominator of the client base is that they're wealthy, but they vary by profession: GQ reported that he's treated CEOs, actors, and finance employees. And a bevy of high-earning tech workers — mostly men but some women — have come to him for the procedure. "I joke that I could open a tech company," Debiparshad told GQ. "I got, like, 20 software engineers doing this procedure right now who are here in Vegas. There was a girl yesterday from PayPal. I've got patients from Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft. I've had multiple patients from Microsoft." The surgeon said he didn't recommend the procedure for athletes since it could decrease their ability, and many of the patients GQ spoke to said they didn't tell people they had the procedure done. The stigma around plastic surgery for men has begun to fall away in recent years. Cosmetic procedures performed on men went up 325% from 1997 to 2015, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. And within Silicon Valley, plastic surgery has increasingly become a way for male tech workers to reach their physical goals in recent years." unquote. There's more but I decided to shorten it LOL because I didn't want to bore everyone. Looks like big tech incels be looks maxxing. It's still not going to change their weaselly personalities that no woman in their right mind would ever get wet by. Many are now paying to grow half an inch because they never hit puberty. Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we talk about the business and marketing side of plastic surgery, and how to charge a lot / give a lot. I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients are saying, as well as consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits. Now, today's episode is called "Charge a Lot, Give a Lot — with Ryan Neinstein, MD". How do you charge up to $75K for a tummy tuck? That's what I asked this week's Beauty and the Biz Podcast (link) guest Dr. Ryan Neinstein. He's a plastic surgeon in private practice in NYC, in a gorgeous 6K square foot office above the iconic Bergdorf Goodman store with views overlooking Central Park. Dr. Neinstein's answer….”We charge a lot. We give a lot.” He went on to explain his hyper focus on the patient experience and aftercare that his patients gladly pay extra for. He walks his talk by employing 30 full-time staff who assist him in surgery, offer concierge services, drop off garments, pick up prescriptions, visit post-op patients and anything else that makes patients feel special and cared for. His entire team thinks “relational” vs “transactional” and he gave lots of great tips for developing a practice culture that is fun, inspiring and profitable. We also talked about HOW: His marketing efforts keep 3 plastic surgeons busy What he focuses on that allows him to charge more How he “rules but not reigns” Dr. Neinstein shared his pearls and philosophy with good take-a-ways. Everybody has looked in the mirror at some point in their lives and thought they could do with a smaller nose or fewer wrinkles. Almost 10 million operations were performed in 2014, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Eyelid surgery topped the list of the five most popular procedures, which included breast augmentation and rhinoplasty. We hear a lot about cosmetic surgery these days. But what many people may not realise is that reconstructing someone's face has an ancient past. There are reports of treatments to restore a broken nose in ancient Egyptian documents.Considering that safe anaesthetics and antibiotics were only discovered in the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a truly painful and risky business to go under the knife in the past. But as far back as the mid-15th century nose jobs were carried out using skin taken from the upper arm.Plastic surgery went through a revolution during World War One. The trenches protected the soldiers' bodies, but many who stuck their heads up were exposed to explosions. New techniques were developed by Harold Gillies who ran a ward at the Cambridge Military Hospital in Britain, and later a whole hospital dedicated to helping disfigured soldiers. Many wounded men at that time couldn't stand looking at their own faces. There were no mirrors in the hospital. In parks near the hospital, some benches were painted blue to signal to patients with facial injuries that they could sit there. And it was a way of telling local residents to prepare for the shock of seeing someone with a disfigured face.Plastic surgery has come a long way since then. It reconstructs what does need reconstructing but it also makes people with no particular problems feel more confident. Bigger breasts? Straight nose? Facelift? In many cases, cosmetic surgery isn't a necessity at all, just a choice. But when done properly by capable doctors on patients who have a realistic goal, it's believed that plastic surgery can heal psychological wounds almost as much as physical ones.词汇表can do with 需要wrinkle 皱纹procedure 手术breast augmentation 隆胸rhinoplasty 鼻子整形cosmetic surgery 整容手术anaesthetic 麻醉剂antibiotic 抗生素to go under the knife 开刀,做手术nose job 鼻子整形手术trench 战壕ward 病房disfigured 毁坏了外形或容貌的facelift 去皱整容手术,面部拉皮手术realistic 现实的;合情合理的

Cosmetic surgery is one of the fastest growing medical procedures in the United States. According to 2019 figures from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the US has the highest number of cosmetic procedures conducted annually, as well as the largest number of practicing cosmetic surgeons, who are among this country's highest paid medical professionals. Cosmetic surgery is also a rapidly growing industry globally and countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea are sought after destinations for people seeking specialty procedures. Though highly variable according to context, aesthetic standards for beauty are always socially and politically constructed. In this episode, we spoke with Dr. Alka Menon, a medical sociologist and assistant professor at Yale University whose research centers on the relationship between the body and social identities, especially race and ethnicity, and how these ideas manifest in the realm of cosmetic surgery. How is cosmetic surgery enmeshed in the thorny politics of race, ethnicity and gender in the US, and around the world? And, as surgical interventions become increasingly normalized, how is the virtual space of social media shaping physical aspirations about what it means to be beautiful?

But there is a lot more to getting a nose job than meets the eye. Even though the nose is composed of just a couple bones and pieces of cartilage, it's the most difficult and technically demanding facial cosmetic operation that we perform.  Rhinoplasty has the highest revision rate in all of cosmetic surgery. It also has the highest rate of patients who suffer from BDD, body dysmorphic disorder. In addition, botched nose jobs abound, and there are even plastic surgeons who specialize in fixing botched noses. In this episode, Dr. Marc DuPere talks about body dysmorphic disorder and the role of cosmetic surgery in personal transformation. Long before joining the ranks of Toronto plastic surgeons, Dr. Marc DuPéré was trained in Montréal at the prestigious McGill University Faculty of Medicine from 1991 to 1996 where he was, notably, mentored by Dr. Bruce Williams, a Canadian and North American pioneer in Plastic surgery and a key figure in Dr. DuPéré's choice of vocation and profession. He then attended the world renowned University of Toronto, where he completed his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in plastic surgery. In 2002, he pursued further training in cosmetic plastic surgery in Paris, France. During this fellowship, he had the opportunity to work with internationally recognized plastic surgeons such as: Dr. Daniel Marchac, specializing in facial plastic surgery; Dr. Gilbert Aiach, a nasal plastic surgeon and president at that time of the French Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery; and Dr. Natalie Bricout and Dr. Sylvain Pétouin, both with strong interests in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery. Dr. DuPéré has since spent time learning the refinements of facial rejuvenation from Dr. Bruce Connell, a prominent facelift plastic surgeon in Los Angeles. Dr. DuPéré also counts as one of his mentors Dr. Patricia Wexler, a prominent dermatologist in New York City who is an expert in dermal injections, skin care, and fat grafting. Dr. DuPéré's surgical interests include facial and nasal surgery, body contouring, post-weight loss procedures, and breast reconstruction and enhancement. Dr. DuPéré is one of only a few North American surgeons performing calf, buttock, abdominal, and pectoral implantations, which he learned about while visiting Brazil. Facial injections are also a significant component of his practice; having participated in many North American FACE meetings and having trained numerous cosmetic plastic surgeons in Toronto and throughout Canada, he developed expertise in 3-dimensional facial volume restoration and rejuvenation, all with little to no downtime. One of Dr. DuPéré's strong qualities is his warm personality, which helps patients during the emotional process of contemplating a surgical procedure. He is extremely approachable, down-to-earth, reassuring, attentive to detail, and knowledgeable. An avid painter, photographer, and artist, Dr. DuPéré's precision work has attained high levels of refinement and excellence. He is trilingual, speaking French, English, and Portuguese, and brings worldly knowledge to his work each day. It is with a North American training and European refinement that Dr. DuPéré brings a uniquely Atlantic perspective and approach to the practice of aesthetic and plastic surgery. Outside the office, when he is not teaching or presenting at national or international conferences, Dr. DuPéré enjoys spending time with his family outdoors, travelling, gardening, and cooking.
