Protesters in Minneapolis return to the streets as federal agents take over the investigation into the killing of a Minnesota woman by an ICE agent, while Portland officials condemn another immigration-related shooting.A review of immigration related shootings under President Trump shows a rising pattern of violence as federal agents carry out increasingly aggressive and public operations in U.S. cities. And President Trump signals the U.S. could run Venezuela “much longer” than expected, as oil executives head to the White House to discuss America's expanded oversight of the country's future.Want more analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? Michelle Tandler breaks down the radical ideology of Mayor Mamdani's new "tenant advocate," who wants the state to seize people's homes in the name of fighting white supremacy. The new film ‘Song Sung Blue' is about a Neil Diamond tribute band and stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Before Diamond began recording his own hits like “Solitary Man,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “America,” and “Sweet Caroline,” he wrote songs for other musicians, including The Monkees. Diamond spoke with Terry Gross in 2005. Also, the hit HBO medical drama ‘The Pitt' is back for season two. Noah Wyle plays the veteran attending physician in a Pittsburgh emergency room. The actor/producer spoke with Dave Davies about his tenure on ‘ER' and putting scrubs back on for ‘The Pitt.' Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
In this week's Short Suck, we head back to the 1930s, when milk wasn't just one of many beverages - it was survival, income, and power. As the Great Depression crushed farmers, workers, and cities alike, a perishable staple sparked riots, bombings, deadly shootings, and even Mafia involvement across the Midwest. This is the forgotten history of the Milk Wars, when America went to war... over cow juice. For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Glenn further discusses how Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) appears to be advocating for civil war with how he has responded to the ICE agent fatally shooting a fleeing suspect who hit the agent with her vehicle. Glenn blasts Tim Walz and his administration, laying out the recent scandals Walz has been involved in over the last few weeks. Mauro Institute director and counterterrorism expert Ryan Mauro joins to share the evidence that allegedly links a violent extremist group to Renee Nicole Good, the woman who was fatally shot by an ICE officer after she hit the officer with her car. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter joins to discuss the ongoing situation in Iran and what it means for Israel and the United States. President Trump has been in office for less than a year, and America has gone from negative growth to a 5.9% GDP. Is this a sign of good things to come? Glenn discusses the ongoing Iranian protest, which is seeing Iranian women lighting cigarettes with photographs of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Glenn takes calls from his listeners, who ask about pressing issues like the indictment of Maduro and the Chinese Communist Party buying up American land. Learn more about your ad choices. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, there's new information that contradicts what the Democrats and their media have been saying about Renee Nicole Good, the woman shot by an ICE agent. There's been an effort to portray her as a non-activist, but she was a Minneapolis ‘ICE Watch' ‘warrior' who was trained to resist the feds before the shooting. The Democrat party and their media are responsible for this shooting with their violent rhetoric. Also, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson are the worst type of grifters. There are enemies to people of deep Christian faith, Jews, patriotic Americans supporting President Trump, and those opposing the rise of Islamism and Marxism in the country. These grifters, motivated by millions in profits from a niche audience, have abandoned their past personas to preach anti-Semitism, bigotry, racism, Christian-bashing, and America-hating, stabbing Trump and his supporters in the back while using Saul Alinsky tactics to target, personalize, and assassinate characters, often Jews. Later, 17 Republicans joined Democrats in a 230-196 passage of a three-year extension of expired Obamacare health care tax credits. This extension, unlikely to pass the Senate unchanged, imposes tens of billions in costs on taxpayers without systemic reforms, perpetuating inefficient, second-class government-run health care akin to Bernie Sanders' proposals. Afterward, Iran enforced a nationwide internet blackout as protests demanding the removal of the Islamic government and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei escalated across cities. Protesters chanted "Death to Khamenei" and "freedom, freedom." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome back to the digital wasteland, fellow survivors. We kick things off in the FOLLOW UP by marking a year since the LA Fires—hello, PTSD—alongside a 4th Strokiversary and three years of sobriety, all while wondering why America is currently obsessed with shooting its own civilians in the face.In the IN THE NEWS segment, Wired is finally teaching us how to protest safely in the age of surveillance, and the EFF is cheering on the hackers fighting ICE's Nazi-adjacent tracking tactics. Meanwhile, Meta is harvesting your AI chats for targeted ads, Disney is paying $10 million for spying on kids, and Grok has spent the holidays generating nonconsensual child abuse material—a problem Elon Musk won't have to legally reckon with until the Take It Down Act hits in May. Instagram's Adam Mosseri has basically surrendered to the AI "slop", suggesting we fingerprint "real" media because the fake stuff has already won the war.As we continue the descent, OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT Health portal despite their "loser energy" and compute limits, while Character.AI and Google are quietly settling lawsuits for bots that encouraged teen suicide. Polymarket gamblers are learning that "decentralized" juries will fist you over the definition of an "invasion" just as fast as a bank. Uber showed off a new Lucid-based robotaxi, but we're pumping the brakes on the safety hype given that autonomous vehicles are five times more likely to crash at dusk. To wrap up the news, Tim Cook took home $74 million last year, which is a lot of "systematic philanthropy" he could be doing right now instead of just writing checks to his own ego.In MEDIA CANDY, we're suffering through the Stranger Things wrap-up and a John McTiernan holiday marathon, though the real highlight is MTV Rewind's tribute to music videos. We've got Traitors, The Pitt, and even a John Candy doc on the list, while APPS & DOODADS brings us the DJI Osmo 8, Victrola's turntable-vibrating speakers. At least California's DROP tool lets you purge your data from 500 brokers at once. Finally, we go to THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE to hear Dave Bittner rant about holiday tech support, health insurance gouging, and Dave Filoni taking the Star Wars reins. We close out with a look at ILM's 50th, the deepfake porn cesspool formerly known as Twitter, and a birthday toast to the Starman himself, David Bowie.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! How long will the United States claim control over Venezuela? “Only time will tell,” President Donald Trump told the New York Times on Wednesday — potentially years. U.S. troops invaded the country over the weekend, kidnapping President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to narco-terrorism charges in New York on Monday. They now sit in a Brooklyn jail, awaiting trial. Trump and administration officials have justified ousting Maduro by claiming it was consistent with the Monroe Doctrine — a doctrine that through the years “has been expanded into something like a universal police warrant that allows the United States to intervene,” says historian Greg Grandin. “Trump has redefined the Monroe Doctrine to mean, the Monroe is as a weapon that the United States can use in order to protect its interests wherever it wants, whenever it wants. So it's a substitute for liberal international law.” This week on the Intercept Briefing, host Jessica Washington discusses the Trump administration's attack on Venezuela, its larger aims of controlling the Western Hemisphere, and bringing Latin America to heel with Grandin, the author of numerous books, including most recently "America, América: A New History of the New World."“There's an affiliation between the Monroe Doctrine and American First nationalism,” says Grandin. “They imagine United States sovereignty expanding well beyond its borders within its hemisphere.” The administration's vision is outlined in the National Security Strategy the White House released in December. “This is a strategy that announces that the Monroe Doctrine is back in the especially bellicose form. But what's also interesting, if you read further, the United States is not withdrawing from any of those old regions. … It's reserving the right to treat the rest of the world like it treats Latin America.” Trump and administration officials — from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a longtime advocate for Venezuelan and Cuban regime change, to White House chief of staff Stephen Miller — have threatened to expand military operations to Colombia, Mexico, and other Latin American countries that don't fall in line. Maureen Tkacik, investigations editor at The American Prospect, who recently wrote a profile of Rubio headlined “The Narco-Terrorist Elite,” also joins the conversation to discuss the former Florida senator's history and ambitions.Tkacik points out that Rubio, a driving force behind Maduro's ouster, represents a wing of the Republican Party fixated on battling nominally left leaders in the region. That mentality is at odds with a key faction of Trump's base, who say they're against foreign intervention because they think the government should keep its attention on U.S. soil.Trump's attack on Venezuela and fixation on so-called “narco-terrorists,” Tkacik says, “represent an attempt to reconcile these two poles — the Steve Bannon guys and the Marco Rubio neocons — that really have different definitions of America First.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. What makes something valuable? To find the answer, we tell the story of De Beers — the multinational diamond company that built the most successful monopoly in modern history. Along the way, we speak with Kevin DeMeritt, founder of Lear Capital, one of America’s largest precious-metals firms. What we uncover is striking: many of the things humanity has prized were never inherently valuable at all — their value was manufactured. Presented by The Licorice Guy. What Makes Something Valuable? John welcomes back Michael McFaul, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia and the author of “Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, & The New Global Disorder,” for a special, two-part deep dive into Donald Trump's foreign policy. In the first installment, McFaul weighs in on the headline-making, world-shaking events of the past week — from America's invasion of Venezuela and exfiltration of Nicolas Maduro to Trump's increasingly insistent (and apparently serious) intimations that Greenland could be next. The Russian Orthodox Church, a longtime arm of the Kremlin, is running an intelligence operation targeting MAGA's Christian nationalism, to help turn America into a dictatorship. This week's bonus show continues our conversation with Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman. She exposes a sweeping op by the Kremlin's church. You can read her investigation in the show notes. Russians, being white and Christian, get a pass that other terrorist regimes, like Iran, don't. We fact check their mind-hacking op, and also answer questions from Gaslit Nation listeners–like if Putin and Trump got in a fight, who would win? Whether it's MAGA, the Kremlin, or the regime in Iran that looks on the verge of collapse, it's the same mind-hack everywhere: confuse, divide, and exhaust. The antidote is clarity, which can only be maintained through self-care. This weekend, be sure to find some time in nature, and be gentle on yourselves and others. This week, the shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis has drawn new scrutiny of President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration enforcement push, and reactions have become something of a political Rorschach test. Meanwhile, Democrats such as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. Mark Kelly (Arizona) are facing new challenges as they navigate attacks from Republican leaders. And the Trump administration continues to project defiance in the aftermath of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's removal.“This is just one expression of raw American power after another,” says White House reporter Michael Birnbaum on this week's “Post Reports” politics roundtable.Michael spoke with host Colby Itkowitz and Dan Merica, co-anchor of the Early Brief newsletter, to unpack a jam-packed week of political news. Today's show was produced by Thomas Lu and Josh Carroll. It was edited by Martine Powers with help from Reena Flores and mixed by Sean Carter. Subscribe to The Washington Post here. It's Casual Friday on the Majority Report On today's program: Zohran Mamdani reaffirms his position that his administration will not cooperate with ICE and NYC will honor their sanctuary city policies. Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent at The Nation magazine, joins Sam and Emma to wrap up the week's news. In the Fun Half: Country singer and influencer calls out the fascist state murder of Renee Good. In response to the shooting of Renee Good, Chuck Schumer says we need a full investigation to get to "the bottom of it." Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner issued a stern warning to ICE, CBP, the National Guard, and all federal agents: anyone who breaks the law in Philadelphia will be arrested, prosecuted, and convicted—and a state conviction cannot be pardoned by Donald Trump. An Uber driver expertly dresses down the dozen or so CBP agents — including Greg Bovino — who have swarmed in to harass him as he works. Tony Dokoupil delivers a meaningless monologue on the ICE killing that gives off the feeling of AI-slop writing. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Poor Choices and Chaos the fatal ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis that has sparked nationwide controversy. Clay and Buck dissect the incident where a 37-year-old woman allegedly used her vehicle to obstruct federal immigration enforcement, resulting in her death. They emphasize video evidence showing the ICE officer acted in self-defense, countering claims from Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz, who labeled the shooting as excessive force and called for protests. The hosts argue this tragedy reflects a deeper problem within the Democratic Party’s anti-law enforcement rhetoric, which encourages dangerous confrontations with federal officers. VP Vance Calls Out the Left Live White House briefing featuring Vice President JD Vance and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who deliver a fiery defense of ICE and condemn the media for spreading “lies” about the incident. Vance asserts that the woman killed was part of a broader left-wing network aimed at obstructing immigration enforcement through doxxing, harassment, and even domestic terrorism tactics. He vows tougher federal action, including a new Assistant Attorney General role to prosecute those inciting violence against law enforcement. The briefing underscores the administration’s stance: enforcing immigration law is non-negotiable, and Democrats must stop rallying mobs against federal officers. Good News for MAHA Moms Guest Katie Zacharia joins to weigh in on the political fallout and broader implications. She highlights how sanctuary city policies and anti-ICE activism have fueled violence and fraud, citing California’s staggering $72 billion fraud scandal under Gavin Newsom and systemic failures in oversight. Katie calls for federal action, including suspending aid to jurisdictions violating the Supremacy Clause. The conversation shifts to California’s ongoing crises: wildfire recovery delays in Malibu and Pacific Palisades, where red tape and environmental regulations have stalled rebuilding efforts, leaving homeowners with plummeting property values. Katie also breaks down the proposed 5% billionaire wealth tax, warning it will accelerate the exodus of tech moguls and entrepreneurs from California while funding Medi-Cal programs strained by free healthcare for illegal immigrants. The hour also touches on RFK Jr.’s food pyramid overhaul and vaccine schedule changes, which have energized “Maha Moms” and even some liberal parents seeking reform in children’s health standards. Katie praises Trump for empowering RFK Jr. to challenge Big Pharma and promote healthier policies. Audience Talkbacks! Clay and Buck then pivot to lighter—but fiery—cultural debates, including regional cuisine hot takes and the “most overrated foods” in America. From Philly cheesesteaks and mint juleps to Puerto Rican Mofongo, the hosts don’t hold back, sparking laughs and listener engagement. They also revisit the nostalgia (and regret) of Jägermeister shots and Jägerbombs, contrasting them with underrated drinks like espresso martinis and sangria. The segment closes with talkbacks from listeners proposing which states or territories to “sell off,” adding humor to an otherwise intense news cycle. "Anybody who sees trauma in life or has experienced it... those things stay with you. And I think that they make us the present version of who we are on whatever journey we're on." One year ago in Los Angeles, Jacob Soboroff watched his childhood home turn to ash amongst the thousands of others in one of the most destructive wildfires in history. But, before he was on the front lines covering the devastation of the Palisades and Eaton fires that killed 31 people and destroyed more than 13,000 homes and properties, he was a young student with absolutely no interest in journalism. Jacob talks to Dan about his journey, from theater student to political staffer to journalist. Tragedy unfolded in Minnesota when an ICE agent fatally shot a woman who was trying to evade in her car after running into the ICE officer. Glenn examines the incident and provides critical context that the ICE officer had that contributed to his split-second decision. The Left's reaction, however, including Minnesota's leadership, only raised the political temperature. Glenn and Stu further explain how the Minnesota woman left few options for the ICE officer with the decisions she made. President Trump announced that he is moving to ban giant corporations from buying private homes, but Glenn warns this isn't a solution and will only lead to more problems. Glenn and Glenn's chief researcher, Jason Buttrill, discuss America's seizure of a Russian oil tanker. Glenn admonishes ABC News' coverage of the Minnesota ICE shooting. Glenn goes through the difference between rugged individualism and the "warmth of collectivism." Glenn warns of what you're consuming while on social media. You become what you engage with, so be wary of consuming dark and negative press. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, the Democratic Party deliberately ignores and rewrites immigration laws to import unassimilated illegal aliens from around the world. They use empty slogans on equality and affordability while destroying the nation. There are Somali immigrants in Minneapolis who cluster, have large families, fail to assimilate, and exploit the system. America is at a point of no return unless all of this is reversed under President Trump. The Democrat party and their media play a central role in violence against ICE. The Democrat governors and mayors, among others, using inflammatory rhetoric and yelling about resistance, not to mention several physically confronting ICE, have blood on their hands today. They've created a militant environment against ICE agents, smearing them as stormtroopers and alike, and turning ICE agents into physical targets in one city after another. There has been a campaign of organized and systematic violence against ICE in city after city, and the Democrat Party officials almost always and universally use the most provocative slogans to attack ICE. We don't have all the facts and we are looking at what videos are available, but we do know that you don't drive a vehicle at law enforcement -- literally within inches of at least one ICE official -- in a sudden burst when they are approaching the vehicle and talking to its driver. Later, in late 2025, the Islamic Tampa Area Muslim Professional Association (iTAMPA) was launched at a Florida Islamic school as a physician-led initiative to create a Sharia-compliant parallel healthcare system within Tampa's growing Muslim Brotherhood enclave. Tampa is positioned as a hub for Hijrah-driven migration, encouraging Muslims to relocate and build self-contained ecosystems encompassing schools, mosques, halal commerce, residential clustering, and healthcare to minimize dependence on non-Muslim systems. iTAMPA features a Muslim doctor directory, mentorship for generational succession, political engagement, and centralized Sharia governance via an Amir and shura council, aiming for fully independent Islamic communities replicable nationwide, as seen in models from Dallas, Chicago, and Detroit. Afterward, Salena Zito calls in to explain that real America exists offline. The left and some on the right mistakenly assume that opinions circulated and exploited on X represent the true mindset of election-deciding voters, which isn't true. In this episode of American Potential, host David From hits the road in Arizona with Mary Beth Cirucci, who has been traveling the country on Americans for Prosperity's Road to Prosperity Tour. After visiting 11 states in 11 weeks, Mary Beth shares what she's learned about America's growing energy needs, the urgency created by AI and data growth, and why reliable energy sources like natural gas, coal, nuclear, and oil remain essential to keeping the lights on and costs down for families. They discuss firsthand stories from coal mines, power plants, oil rigs, paper mills, and manufacturing facilities, highlighting how excessive permitting delays and costly regulations are blocking energy production and job creation. From eight-to-twelve-year permitting timelines to $10 million mandates that deliver no environmental benefit, this conversation explains why permitting reform is critical to restoring common sense, strengthening the power grid, bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., and securing America's energy future.

The justices heard oral arguments in the consolidated cases (Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. V.O.S. Selections, Inc.) on November 5, 2025, where they appeared skeptical of the administration’s position that IEEPA grants the president authority to impose such sweeping tariffs during declared national emergencies. Lower courts had previously ruled against the tariffs’ legality, but they remain in effect pending the Supreme Court’s decision. These options are drawn from existing trade laws and have been used by past administrations. Here’s a breakdown of the key alternatives: Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962: This allows the president to impose tariffs on imports deemed a threat to national security after an investigation by the Department of Commerce. There’s no cap on duty levels or duration, making it flexible for broad application, such as on steel or autos. Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974: Through the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), this permits tariffs in response to unfair or discriminatory foreign trade practices that violate international agreements or harm U.S. commerce. No rate limit exists, but it requires an investigation and findings, which could target specific countries like China. Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974: This enables temporary import surcharges of up to 15% (or quotas) for up to 150 days to address “large and serious” balance-of-payments deficits. It’s seen as a quick interim option while longer-term measures are pursued, but extensions need congressional approval. Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974: Known as “safeguard” measures, this authorizes tariffs if surging imports are causing or threatening serious injury to domestic industries. It requires a U.S. International Trade Commission investigation and recommendation, with tariffs potentially lasting up to four years (extendable to eight). Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930: This allows duties up to 50% on imports from countries engaging in “unfair” practices that discriminate against U.S. exports. It’s less commonly used and could face immediate lawsuits due to its broad interpretation potential. The administration has signaled readiness to shift to these tools, potentially starting with Section 122 for rapid implementation. U.S. Trade Deficit Drops 40% in Latest Commerce Dept Report As you review this latest data on trade, remember any drop in trade deficits has two big picture functions: First, lower trade deficits generally mean the accompanying GDP release will be stronger than anticipated because imported products are a deduction from the valuation of all goods and services created in the U.S. economy. Lower imports mean less is deducted. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, a drop in the trade deficit created by diminished imports means more wealth remains inside the USA. We are not spending, sending money overseas, to import foreign goods at the same rate, and that money stays inside the U.S. economy. More wealth inside the U.S. provides the fuel for expanded domestic growth, more investment gains in USA manufacturing and USA industry and the ability to pay higher USA wages. The Commerce Department is reporting today that the U.S. trade deficit for October 2025 dropped to the smallest amount in 16-years. A significant amount of the deficit drop was because a high value of physical precious metals (gold/silver) was exported, simultaneous with big offshore pharmaceutical companies dropping the prices of imported products (policy and tariff pressure). Some may question whether internal consumer demand has declined, causing the significant drop in imports. However, the U.S productivity rate is still very high – which generally means domestic consumer demand is still high and all units produced have a lower overall cost per unit. Economic analysis can get weedy…. so, a simple way to look at productivity is to think about baking bread in your kitchen. If you were going to bake 4 loaves of bread it might take you 2 hrs. start to finish. However, if you were going to bake 8 loaves of bread it would not take you twice as long because most of the tasks can be accomplished with simple increases in batch size, and only minor increases in labor time. Your productivity measured in the last four loaves is higher. Economic Productivity is measured much the same way, within what's called a production probability equation. Additionally, if two hours of your time are worth $40, each of four loaves of bread costs $10 in labor; but if you make 8 loaves in the same amount of time the labor cost is only $5/per loaf. When we see higher productivity in direct alignment with GDP increases, the increased production indicates sustainable GDP growth. That is no coincidence: it is strategy. Rubio is not acting to provoke an immediate implosion, but to manage the decomposition of power. By exposing contradictions, routes, false narratives, and opaque movements, he weakens Delcy in front of the Chavista leadership, but without pushing the system toward a violent break that generates a power vacuum, chaos, or an unpredictable military reaction. This achieves several objectives at once: First, it isolates Delcy. Every time she is exposed, her room to maneuver shrinks in front of her “external allies” and the regime’s hardline elements. She shifts from being an operator to becoming a risk. Second, it deepens internal distrust. When sensitive information starts to align with U.S. actions, within the regime no one knows who is leaking what. That paranoia is corrosive and weakens more than a direct strike. Third, it preserves the minimum governability necessary for a transition. An abrupt collapse favors criminal actors, armed dissidents, and foreign powers. Controlling the pace of the erosion allows maintaining channels, containing damage, and preparing the ground for a subsequent political process. In that context, Delcy is trapped. If she cooperates, she exposes herself. If she doesn’t cooperate, she becomes isolated. Any move weakens her. And Rubio, aware of that, pressures her without touching the final detonator. That’s why this deserves attention: we are not seeing improvisation or personal revenge, but a calibrated operation of attrition, where the goal is not to humiliate for spectacle, but to dismantle the regime piece by piece, avoiding Venezuela paying the cost of an uncontrolled collapse. https://twitter.com/amuse/status/2008967791966376081?s=20 https://twitter.com/disclosetv/status/2009090766354960453?s=20 War/Peace Security Alert – U. American colonial forces, low on ammunition and facing British regulars advancing uphill, were reportedly instructed to hold their fire until the enemy was close enough for shots to be effective—maximizing the impact of limited powder and musket balls, which were inaccurate at longer ranges. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations that no longer serve American interests. The Memorandum orders all Executive Departments and Agencies to cease participating in and funding 35 non-United Nations (UN) organizations and 31 UN entities that operate contrary to U.S. national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty. This follows a review ordered earlier this year of all international intergovernmental organizations, conventions, and treaties that the United States is a member of or party to, or that the United States funds or supports. These withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities that advance globalist agendas over U.S. priorities, or that address important issues inefficiently or ineffectively such that U.S. taxpayer dollars are best allocated in other ways to support the relevant missions. RESTORING AMERICAN SOVEREIGNTY: President Trump is ending U.S. participation in international organizations that undermine America's independence and waste taxpayer dollars on ineffective or hostile agendas. Many of these bodies promote radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs that conflict with U.S. sovereignty and economic strength. American taxpayers have spent billions on these organizations with little return, while they often criticize U.S. policies, advance agendas contrary to our values, or waste taxpayer dollars by purporting to address important issues but not achieving any real results. By exiting these entities, President Trump is saving taxpayer money and refocusing resources on America First priorities. This is factually a much bigger deal, a bigger win, than most will initially appreciate. Each of the institutions carry “membership fees” or financial obligations each participating government pays into. Each organization consists of board members, stakeholders and other administrative offices which employ the friends and families of current and former politicians, world “leaders” and essentially well-connected and disconnected elites who run the agencies. It's like a massive network of NGOs, except the entities exist exclusively with government funding. Just like the United Nations itself, the USA always pays the dues, fees and largest portion of the operating expenses, which includes payrolls and travel benefits. Other countries participate, but it is the USA who picks up the largest portion of the financial obligations for the organization itself to exist. Like USAID, the designated “global” organizations (conventions, treaties, etc) operate as massive bureaucratic rule makers for global standards and practices. The organizations themselves employ a network of downstream entities, agencies, contractors, think-tanks, academic liaisons and internal government offices who collaborate with the goals and objectives of the parent organization. Withdrawing the support of the U.S. means cutting that entire apparatus off from receiving funding from the USA. Europe and the USA are the largest funders of each of these World Economic Forum aligned agencies. It is not coincidental that President Trump and Secretary Rubio are making this move in advance of President Trump traveling to Davos, where the network associations congregate. President Trump is expected to deliver a bucket of ice water upon the heads of those who attend Davos annually. The GREAT RESET crew, who design the global government customs and norms, is being reset. To celebrate Melvyn Bragg's 27 years presenting In Our Time, five well-known fans of the programme have chosen their favourite episodes. Comedian Frank Skinner has picked the episode on the life and work of the poet Emily Dickinson and recorded an introduction to it. (This introduction will be available on BBC Sounds and the In Our Time webpage shortly after the broadcast and will be longer than the version broadcast on Radio 4). Emily Dickinson was arguably the most startling and original poet in America in the C19th. According to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, her correspondent and mentor, writing 15 years after her death, "Few events in American literary history have been more curious than the sudden rise of Emily Dickinson into a posthumous fame only more accentuated by the utterly recluse character of her life and by her aversion to even a literary publicity." That was in 1891 and, as more of Dickinson's poems were published, and more of her remaining letters, the more the interest in her and appreciation of her grew. With her distinctive voice, her abundance, and her exploration of her private world, she is now seen by many as one of the great lyric poets. A statement from Gaslit Nation listener Annie in Minneapolis, Minnesota: Real Resistance I live in Minneapolis, 6 minutes from where Renee Good was shot and killed today by an ICE agent. I am 39, a white woman, with a 6 year old like Renee. I am on my neighborhood rapid response thread and on another morning it could easily have been me who was shot and killed. I feel grief, I feel rage, but I am also hopeful that her death will crack open something that needs to see the light of day. On Tuesday, dozens of people were brutally kidnapped and taken from their families, but there were no press conferences and no headlines. Today, all eyes are on ICE. Schools are canceled for the rest of the week. My manager wrote to say she understands if we need to take time off. It finally feels like the whole city is grieving in the way I have been for the past five weeks since ICE first began occupying Minneapolis, and the past five months since ICE first descended on Chicago. It feels like I can finally grieve openly. Politicians are taking the occupation more seriously. Governor Walz is talking about the national guard, Mayor Frey is talking about Minneapolis police officers protecting first amendment rights. There is so much the state and the city could be doing to assist and protect people at risk right now, but their opposition has been limited to press conferences, social media posts, and an ordinance that limits the use of city property by ICE. This is really different than playing an active role in protecting and supporting people. Actual resistance could look like tracking ICE apprehensions and accounting for all victims, running a support hotline for impacted families, providing legal aid to immigrants, tracking ICE locations and sharing this information with immigrants at risk, maintaining a list of ICE license plates, serving as constitutional observers during ICE stops, or even just lifting up the work of rapid response networks and encouraging residents to participate. None of this has been happening, and that probably won't change, but I now have a tiny bit of hope that it might. There's a recent video put out by Tad Stoermer, a historian of resistance movements, about the "loyal opposition" that puts words to how I have been feeling. He says, "When the opposition party treats an authoritarian regime as a normal political opponent, […] it doesn't just fail to resist, it just becomes a loyal opposition, [loyal to the system it is operating in.] […] It actively teaches people the wrong lessons about what resistance looks like. It […] tells everyone watching 'this is the only appropriate response. This is how serious people handle this situation.' And when 'this' is press releases, and podium speeches, and fundraising emails, and strongly worded social media posts endlessly about, I don't know, cost of living issues, while the regime is invading sovereign nations, announcing it will run them, threatening NATO and world stability in addition to our domestic stability, what people learn is that the situation might not in fact be that serious." He goes on to contrast this with real resistance, which includes developing organizing infrastructure, building parallel institutions, and building resistance networks. He uses the Underground Railroad as an example of real resistance, and talks about how the "loyal opposition" absorbs energy that could otherwise be used for building the resistance infrastructure that we need. Today, Jacob Frey told ICE to "get the f*ck out of Minneapolis," but he didn't say what he will do if they don't. We need to be thinking about resistance dynamics. When ICE does not get out of Minneapolis, what action will the City take? What actions are we taking to back up our demands? The phrase that keeps repeating in my head today is "Make repression backfire." Collectively, let's channel our grief and rage into making state repression backfire and building a real resistance movement that will allow us to protect people, take back power, and build the world we need.
