On Wednesday, the Supreme Court struck down a 2024 Louisiana district map that created a second majority-Black voting district for use in future elections. In a 6-3 decision, the Court found that the Voting Rights Act did not authorize states the ability to create majority-minority voting districts. The ruling didn't overturn Section Two of the Voting Rights Act, but in the dissent, Justice Elena Kagan argued that it had done so in all but deed. In America’s first hundred years, the animal you were most likely to see was a passenger pigeon. And you saw a lot of them. Flocks were so numerous they literally blotted out the sun for days and their combined weight snapped the branches of entire forests where they roosted. Yet by 1914, the last specimen, a female named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo, marking the complete extinction of what had been North America's most abundant bird numbering in the billions just decades earlier. Early Americans assumed the nation's bird populations were infinite, so market hunters fashioned homemade cannons to blast sleeping ducks by the dozens, "pigeoneers" shipped passenger pigeons by the trainload to city restaurants, and feather hunters shot rare birds worth more than their weight in gold so Gilded Age women could wear plumes in their hats. What followed was an unlikely coalition of bird-lovers like Roosevelt, gunmakers, business titans, and brave game wardens who transformed American conservation. They couldn’t save the passenger pigeon, but they saved other species from extinction, like the Canada Goose and the trumpeter swan. Today's guest is James H. McCommons, author of The Feather Wars: And the Great Crusade to Save America's Birds. We discuss how Roosevelt used executive powers to create the first federal bird refuge at Pelican Island in 1903, why the revolutionary 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act made nearly all wild birds wards of the federal government while inadvertently establishing that federal law supersedes state law, and how conservation success stories including wild turkeys, wood ducks, trumpeter swans, and bald eagles were all brought back from extinction's brink. McCommons also warns that America faces a new crisis reminiscent of the Gilded Age. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the AP article reporting James Comey's second indictment was grotesque propaganda - an opinion piece that leads with accusations of vindictive prosecution by the Trump administration's Justice Department. The piece notes Comey's history feuding with Trump and his role in the Russia investigation but these details are irrelevant to the charge. Comey's explanation for the 8647 seashells is unbelievable—especially for a former FBI director. Also, Iran is overflowing with oil and desperately seeking storage in quarries, old ships, and anywhere possible because President Trump has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz—taking it over in response to Iran's actions—preventing them from exporting oil. They continue pumping but have nowhere to store it; shutting down the wells risks destroying or rendering many unworkable.  The U.S. should give Iran two options – unconditional surrender or we finish Iran off. Later, the Democrat Party has a long history of violence and embracing humanity's worst traits. Democrats target Trump because he stands between them and the people, loves America and its founding. In the spring of 1936, the producer of King Kong hauled a film crew to the desert of Arizona to shoot a sweeping romantic epic. But the heat was so punishing that it melted film stock, caused the lead actress to pass out, and killed the production's mascot – a baby camel.  It was the beginning of a heat wave that parked itself over America for months, quickly becoming one of the deadliest natural disasters in our country's history.
