Alibi didn't feel his alien-rebuilt lower leg was a threat, though he didn't tell anyone about the mental link he now had with the aliens, The Rhoday. But the Ghost Ship has reappeared, and it seems to have taken over the mind and body of Alibi Jones! We'll see if Alibi can break free in Chapter Thirty of Alibi Jones and The Hornet's Nest! The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
Hi, friends, and welcome back to our series, "On Becoming: The Art and Craft of Personal Storytelling," where we take a close look at personal essays written by real students, talk about why we love them, what makes them work, and how they came to be. In this episode, I'm joined by Amber Patterson, Regional Director of Admission at Texas Christian University. This conversation does two things at once. We read a real student essay closely, line by line, and we get inside an admission reader's head to understand what's actually landing as she reads through it. We get into: What Amber hopes to learn about a student when she sits down with their personal statement Why TCU has chosen not to use any AI to read applications, and the human moments she says a machine can't pick up How the reading process actually works at TCU A full breakdown of an essay called "The Silent Assassin," starting with Amber's take on why a clever hook may matter less than students think How to nest a small, everyday challenge inside a larger essay (the hybrid structure), and how a common challenge can be than enough How to subtly weave an extracurricular activity into your essay, and how to actually use the additional information section Amber's honest take on AI for students: where it helps, and where to avoid it Amber Patterson is a first generation, non-traditional college student who earned her Bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies from Cal State East Bay and a Master of Human Relations degree in Inclusive Leadership from the University of Oklahoma. After a decade as a college counselor in California public high schools, she moved into higher ed and now serves as Regional Director of Admission at Texas Christian University. She has served on WACAC's Executive Board and currently chairs Professional Development for the Regional Admission Counselors of California. What she loves most about this work is helping students find their path to higher education and fostering an environment where every student's unique experiences are valued. I loved this conversation, and Amber's care for students comes through in every answer. I hope you enjoy it too. Play-by-Play: 2:21 – What is often happening in admission offices in June? 3:43 – What does Amber look for in a personal statement? 5:05 – What is the application reading process like at TCU and what is the role of the personal statement? 8:59 – What conversations are happening in the TCU admissions office around using AI for application review? 12:56 – What is the human "feeling" a great essay creates, and why is it so hard to teach a machine to find it? 15:34 – Do college essays need titles? 17:10 – Amber reads the essay, which we're calling "The Silent Assassin" 21:40 – Why does a clever hook matter less than students think? 24:42 – How does the author show leadership qualities through the essay? 26:58 – Why is "show, don't tell" an effective storytelling technique for college essays? 31:39 – How can students nest a challenge into the essay without it being the whole story? 36:40 – When should students weave an activity into the personal statement? 39:51 – Where is it best for students to mention their intended major? 41:00 – What can students include in the additional information section? 43:54 – What does the admission reader learn about the student through their proudest moment in high school? 50:01 – How much information might an admission reader catch in a quick read? 51:58 – What advice does Amber have for students around AI use? 54:15 – What does Amber hope that students will keep in mind throughout this process? 55:19 – Closing thoughts Resources: The "Silent Assassin" Essay Should I Discuss Mental Health in My Personal Statement or College Application? We gaan daarom twee dagen terugblikken in GK Daily. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced puts us in the heart of the pirate world during the Golden Age Of Piracy: the island of New Providence and its capital, Nassau. As we roam around its highly detailed recreation in the game, we get a sense of what it was like to live in a place that wanted to be free from the yoke of kings and empires. But was it really a tropical paradise? Is its reputation as a bastion of democratic freedom founded in fact or fiction?Matt Lewis is joined by pirate historian Dr Rebecca Simon, author of Why We Love Pirates and Pirate Queens: The Lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read to answer these questions and more!Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. We continue with the third grand adventurous novel of The Red Panda and the Android Assassin. This week: Chapter 27!
Roland ist in „Assassin’s Creed Shdaows: Claws of Awaji“, „Cat Quest 2“, „Cat Quest 3“ und „Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred“ unterwegs. Was fehlt da noch? Richtig, natürlich „Das Traumschiff“, diesmal in Island. (Aufgenommen am 16. Mai 2026)

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. We cover lots of topics, delving into stealth and AI systems, objectives and their communication, and other thoughts. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Another mission Issues covered: whether it was designed for a controller, graphic fidelity holding up, the fixed function shading pipeline, the crossover between audio and visual meters, what's going on with the light meter, ambient noise affecting how quickly you can move, adjusting eyesight, layering mechanics into a mini-game, sprinklers everywhere, hose extraction, trip lasers, using a body as a laser avoider, a key that isn't a key, interrogation mechanics, consequences for not interrogating, multiple paths to information, forgetting the vision modes, the marketing targets for particular consoles, dynamic mission objectives, motivating spaces through pattern language, having to mark up the world to tell you what's important, a digression into climbing anywhere, "what map?," not wasting space, clockwork levels, a globetrotting set of ops vs single-location games, Brett has a good point, contrasting flavors, just jumping in and having the briefings paper over travel, the attract mode, benefitting pacing. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: XBOX, Pulp Fiction (obliquely), PlayStation 3, Clint Hocking, NOLF 2, Max Payne, Metal Gear (series), Three Men and a Baby, Poltergeist, Eternal Darkness, Mission: Impossible (series), Entrapment, Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dishonored, Prey, Hitman, Die Hard, Assassin's Creed, Crazy Climber, Cairn, Jusant, Hideo Kojima, Reacher (series), The Gray Man (series), The Hunt for Red October, Quiller (series), Shadowlord-72, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. The Mandalorian and Grogu gives the feature-film treatment to a streaming series whose premise — an outcast warrior lives by a code of honor while traveling in the company of an adorable small companion — owes no small debt to the Japanese multimedia franchise Lone Wolf and Cub. But rather than comb through the six installments comprising that film series for a good match, we’re looking at another attempt to translate Lone Wolf and Cub to Western audiences via the 1980 compilation Shogun Assassin. Joined this week by Filmspotting SVU’s Matt Singer, we discuss how Shogun Assassin’s “just the hits” approach to combining the first two films in the series simplifies the plot and amplifies the action, and how this franchise’s comic-book origins come through in the film’s use of heightened violence, dynamic editing, and narration. Then in Feedback we hear from a couple of listeners about one very recent episode, and one very old one. Please share your thoughts about Shogun Assassin, The Mandalorian and Grogu, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. #717: Clare Flynn Levy was a hedge fund manager in London in the summer of 2007, watching her trading screens turn red — every single day. Merger arbitrage spreads were widening. Investors were pulling out. She didn't yet realize she was watching the early tremors of a global financial crisis. Clare joins us to talk about what that experience taught her about investor behavior, emotional bias, and the hidden forces that drive financial decisions. She now runs a firm that helps professional fund managers analyze their own decision-making patterns. Her core argument: most investors aren't making rational choices. They're rationalizing them. We get into two specific biases that cloud judgment — sunk cost fallacy and the endowment effect — and how they show up whether you're picking individual stocks or rebalancing a 529 plan. Clare shares a personal example. After the 2024 election, she moved her kids' college funds from equities into bonds, recorded her reasoning in her calendar, and came back nine months later to review it honestly. She was wrong. Equities kept climbing. But having a written thesis let her make a clean new decision rather than doubling down out of ego. We also walk through five investor archetypes drawn from behavioral research on fund managers. Connoisseurs let winners run. Raiders take profits too early. Rabbits freeze — or keep buying into a losing position. Hunters wait and take calculated shots. Assassins cut losses cleanly, without emotion. Most people default to rabbit behavior when things go south. The goal is to be an assassin. Clare's practical rule: don't let any single position drag your overall portfolio down more than 1 percent before forcing yourself to reassess. Her closing advice for long-term investors: ask yourself five simple questions before every major move, write down your reasoning, and go back and check.
