In a week that has seen several wildfires break out across the country, we hear from Dr Matthew Jones, who leads a group researching wildfires across the globe. The impact of the Iran conflict has led to government concerns about a potential shortage of CO2 - an important ingredient in many food and drink production processes. In response, the government has awarded a £100 million pound grant to the Ensus factory at Redcar to re-start production after it was mothballed last year. The plant produces bioethanol, CO2 and animal feed from wheat and maize. However, the National Farmers' Union are concerned that “the £100m investment from government is not conditional on Ensus using British wheat”. Caz Graham speaks to Grant Pearson, the chairman of Ensus.As many farmers are continuing or starting to plant Spring crops for harvest later in the year, we hear from the AHDB about how this year's Spring cereal and oilseed drilling is progressing across the country. We also visit a project in Cumbria doing a different type of planting: using a drone to plant a crop of on wet peatland, known as Paludiculture. With fields of bright yellow oilseed rape coming into bloom across the country, one grower tells us why more farmers have been planting the crop this year compared to last. The cider apple harvest has started already. Most apples are picked in the autumn and even varieties which ripen early aren't usually ready yet, and the apple harvest looks likely to buck this year's trend and be good.The Government's decision last week not to offer a rescue package to two plants producing bioethanol is a cause for worry for farmers. This week the Vivergo bioethanol plant on the Humber near Hull stopped production and started laying off staff. It had been buying around a million tonnes of wheat a year, distilling it into bioethanol which is added to petrol to reduce emissions. It also produced large quantities of cattle feed as a by-product. A separate business, Ensus on Teesside is continuing for now; it produces bioethanol and also carbon dioxide which is used in abattoirs and the food industry. The plants have been rendered economically unviable by the US trade deal, which removed tariffs from bioethanol imports from the States. We hear how the UK has been dependent on American bioethanol for some time now.Avian flu is on the rise again. In England new rules on game birds are being introduced after warnings of a 'heightened risk' of the virus. County councils say major changes to the way the government calculates funding for local authorities will penalise rural areas. The government says the new system will mean fairer funding and more stability which will help deliver better public services. However the County Councils Network says rural council tax payers will ‘shoulder the burden' of redistributing hundreds of millions of pounds to urban areas and warn some councils will face deep cuts to their services. The bioethanol company Vivergo says it will take in its last consignment of grain tomorrow, before it stops production at its plant near Hull - unless the UK government steps into help. It says this is because of the US UK trade deal which came into force last month, allowing up to 1.4 billion litres of tax-free bioethanol from the States.How's water managed in the Norfolk Broads? The Scottish Government is due to make a statement this week about whether Galloway is to get a new National Park - or not. Galloway, in the south west of Scotland, was chosen from five potential locations and the first round of consultation on the plan was completed earlier this year, with its report now being considered by Scottish ministers. Er wurde, beginnend um das Jahr 700, erstmals in Syrien von den Alchimisten gewonnen, als sie alkoholische Getränke destillierten. Die Alchimisten waren sehr kundige Leute, auch gute Glasbläser. Einer kam auf die Idee, eine Flasche am Hals heiß zu machen und umzubiegen. So entstand die Retorte. Re tortus. Das zurück gebogene Gefäß. Ihr Arbeitsgerät und noch heute das Symbol der Chemie.Antike Zeichnung eines AlembikEine spätere Verbesserung der Retorte (Bild 1 oben) war ein helmartiger Aufsatz, mit einer Ableitung nach unten. Dieser „Alembik“ (Bild 2 rechts) wurde auf den Destillierkolben aufgesetzt. Wenn man in diesen Geräten Wein erhitzte, verflüchtigte sich „Al Khol“, der Geist. Als die letzten Mauren 1492 Spanien verlassen mussten, war ihr Wissen bereits einige Zeit vorher über die Pyrenäen gelangt. Die erste Stadt, in der die Destillationskunst heimisch wurde, war Armagnac. Das nördlicher gelegene Cognac folgte. Da die alchimistische Kunst zunächst in den Klöstern ausgeübt wurde, waren es irische Mönche, die sie weiter nach Irland und bis nach Schottland trugen. Mangels Wein stellte man dort aus geräuchertem Gerstenmalz eine bierartige Maische her und destillierte daraus das „Lebenswasser“, wie es in Irland genannt wurde.So viel zum Weingeist, der auch heute als Bioethanol eine Rolle spielt. Vor allem in Ländern mit großer Landwirtschaft, wie USA und Brasilien. Zur Vermeidung von CO2 wird mit Hilfe der anaeroben Gärung Ethylalkohol aus Glukose erzeugt. Witzigerweise ist auch hier das Wunschprodukt nicht das Hauptprodukt. Etwa 50 % der Ausbeute ist Kohlendioxid. Ein weithin unbeachteter Punkt, der immer wieder Erstaunen hervorruft.Methanol in Mengen ist nicht durch Gärung zugänglich. Es entsteht nur in kleinen Anteilen aus holzigen Teilen des Gärsubstrats. Deshalb wurde zu drastischen Mitteln gegriffen. Denn schon früh hatte man gelernt, dass es aus Holz gewonnen werden kann. Eine Podcastfolge von Studio ZX in Kooperation mit der VERBIO Vereinigte BioEnergie AG. Das Klimagesetz der Europäischen Union sieht vor, die Treibhausgasemissionen bis 2030 gegenüber 1990 um mindestens 55 % zu senken und 2050 klimaneutral zu werden. Auf dem Verkehrssektor, der aktuell für rund ein Viertel aller klimaschädlichen Gase verantwortlich ist, lastet dabei eine besondere Verantwortung. Die Hersteller sind dazu verpflichtet, die CO₂-Emissionen neuer Lkw zu senken, und zwar ab 2025 um durchschnittlich 15 Prozent und ab 2030 um durchschnittlich 30 Prozent gegenüber dem Stand von 2019. Doch was ist mit den vielen LKWs, die heute rund 75 Prozent des Güterverkehrs auf den europäischen Straßen transportieren? Claus Sauter, dem Chef der VERBIO Vereinigte BioEnergie AG zufolge stellen zirkuläre Biokraftstoffe wie Biodiesel, Bioethanol und Biomethan hier eine bereits heute realisierbare Alternative zur Elektrifizierung schwerer Maschinen dar. Allein in Deutschland haben Biokraftstoffe im Jahr 2020 etwa 12 Mio. Tonnen CO₂ eingespart. Ihr Potenzial für den Verkehrssektor, aber auch die chemische Industrie, liegt allerdings deutlich höher. Sauter hat das erkannt und mit der VERBIO AG ein börsennotiertes modernes Energieunternehmen mit mehr als einer Milliarde Euro Umsatz geschaffen. Nun setzt er sich dafür ein, mit einer im Unternehmen entwickelten Technologie zur Produktion von zirkulärem Biomethan aus 100 Prozent Stroh den Weltmarkt aufzumischen. Standorte in Indien und den USA befinden sich im Bau, um vor Ort mit jeweils regionalem Material Biokraftstoffe dort zu produzieren, wo sie benötigt werden. Farming unions in Wales have lost their fight to scrap strict new limits on spreading slurry and fertiliser. The Welsh Parliament has narrowly voted to uphold restrictions designed to clean up Welsh rivers. Farmers however, say they're excessive and could push some smaller farms out of business. The government's doubled the limit of bioethanol allowed in fuel. From September, E10 petrol will be introduced: that's a blend of petrol with up to 10% crop-based biofuel. The Department for Transport says it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 350,000 cars off the road - but there are concerns... And councils in Sussex are buying back farmland for rewilding; Adur and Worthing Councils hope it will help them reduce carbon emissions and meet their net zero targets. Milliarden wurden in Studien und Pseudo-Maßnahmen verballert und der Effekt ist gleich null. Vielmehr werden wir mit absurden Rechentricks, wie der neuen UER-Verordnung, hinters Licht geführt.
