Today we're exploring something deeper: how politics became America's new religion.            The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche declared “God is dead” in 1882, arguing that traditional religious belief was collapsing under the weight of scientific rationalism and modern skepticism. But Nietzsche wasn't celebrating—he was warning. He understood that humans need transcendent meaning and moral frameworks to organize their lives. If traditional faith died, something else would have to replace it.            That something else, in 21st century America, turned out to be politics. Not politics as a practical method for organizing society and resolving disputes, but politics as a comprehensive belief system that provides meaning, community, moral certainty, and spiritual fulfillment. The group was made up of Black teenagers in Los Angeles, who combined several musical genres—funk, punk, ska, metal, reggae—into a new exciting sound in the late 70's. Blake Miller at 17 is the meatloaf of draft picks — nobody's mad, nobody's excited, he just exists. Meanwhile the rest of the division is eating steak. Detroit traded UP to take Derek Moore over Zion Young, paying more to get the prospect most analysts graded lower. Two of their first three picks are Michigan Wolverines — that's not scouting, that's a Big Ten alumni mixer with a salary cap. Cornell West says America is obsessed with problems but denies catastrophe — and the moment you reduce the catastrophic to the problematic, you have already deodorized the discourse, sanitized it, and started looking at the wasteland from the air-conditioned office of upper management. That line has been working on me since I sat with his Gifford Lectures, and this reflection is what came of it. I want to make one claim and trace it through two unlikely conversation partners.
