This is the latest in a long trend of banks shuttering as the system reaches a breaking point. The banks are bankrupt. Their cash to deposit ratios are much of the time under 1%. The FDIC cannot insure the debts. 63 central banks are implementing Basel III to bring in Bail-In Regimes. This means they basically empty your bank account. In 2024, banks closed 1,043 branches nationwide and this year's trends see a massive acceleration. So far we have seen 272 locations shuttered in just the first quarter. Simultaneously alongside the banks collapsing, retail continues to collapse as well in what they call the "retail apocalypse" as Rite Aid files for a second bankruptcy, Subway closes countless locations and the company that founded Canada, the Hudson Bay Company closes all locations. What we are witnessing is historic, so it's suspicious to say the absolute very least to see AI being propped up by both leftist and right wing governments worldwide as the so-called "solution." Elon Musk at the recent Milken Conference called for AI to replace government as he also says it will replace nearly all jobs and we will live with Universal Basic Income, UBI. This is the agenda of the World Economic Forum and via carbon credit allotments in 15 Minute Cities and the use of digital IDs with CBDCs, we are facing down total technocratic enslavement and dependence. The European Union is banning privacy coins by 2027 restricting people from doing anything digitally without total centralized surveillance and the EU is also releasing their CBDC by October this year at the latest. With the STABLE and GENIUS Acts passing in the United States, a centralized Stablecoin system is being implemented essentially creating a CBDC in the United States complete with KYC. It's not a new idea, but more and more cities and jurisdictions are giving it a try: Universal Basic Income, or UBI. The concept is that everyone is guaranteed a minimum amount of money, typically perhaps $500 a month, to help them meet their basic needs. In some places, only those below a designated economic threshold get the money. It was famously pioneered in Stockton in 2019, and one of the latest to give it a trial run was Oakland, where philanthropic organizations teamed up to give 600 families $500 a month for a year and a half. That pilot project is over now, and the results of how it worked are in. For more, KCBS Political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Jesus Gerena, CEO of UpTogether, an organization founded in Oakland that partnered with Oakland Thrives to create and fund this program. The Vital Center
The old, weird history of libertarianism, with Matt Zwolinski

The Vital Center

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2025 65:49

When U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of his “Liberation Day” tariffs against most of America's global trading partners in April 2025, he seemed to harken back to a centuries-old form of economic nationalism known as mercantilism, which sought prosperity through restrictive trade practices. Opponents of mercantilism from the eighteenth century onward, such as Adam Smith and John-Baptiste Say, became known as classical liberals. In the fullness of time, classical liberalism gave rise to the political philosophy we now know as libertarianism. When most people think of libertarianism, they typically have in mind a small number of figures — including Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and Ludwig von Mises — who were generally associated with the American political right in the mid-twentieth century. But in fact libertarianism was born in the nineteenth century (not the twentieth), and was first developed in Britain and France (not the United States). And as Matt Zwolinski emphasizes in his monumental intellectual history of libertarianism, The Individualists (co-authored with John Tomasi), libertarianism is better thought of as a cluster of related concepts than a unitary doctrine. It's true that most libertarians historically have been concerned with the defense of individual autonomy, property rights, free markets, and personal liberty against state coercion. But the first individual to self-identify as a “libertarian” was the nineteenth-century French anarcho-communist Joseph Déjacque, and libertarianism as it developed often took radical and left-leaning forms, particularly through its association with the abolitionist movement in America in the years before the Civil War. In this podcast conversation, Matt Zwolinski (a philosophy professor at the University of San Diego) discusses his investigations into the intellectual history of libertarianism as well as his analysis of the longstanding tensions between radical and reactionary elements within the philosophy. He describes post-Cold War “third wave libertarianism” taking both right-wing expression (in the form of paleolibertarianism) as well as more radical forms (including left-libertarianism and “bleeding-heart libertarianism.”) And he suggests reasons why many libertarians see more potential in combating poverty through Universal Basic Income grants rather than through more traditional government-administered antipoverty programs.

Silicon Valley's traditionally Democratic tech leaders are turning toward President Donald Trump, but are the reasons as straightforward as lower taxes and favorable regulations? Perhaps not, if we consider the influence of a convoluted political philosophy called the “Dark Enlightenment.” Washington and Silicon Valley power players, including Vice President JD Vance, Steve Bannon, Peter Thiel, and Marc Andreessen, have all cited the philosophy's ideas and one of its leading developers, Curtis Yarvin. Yarvin was reportedly present at Trump's inaugural gala as an informal guest of honor. In a nutshell, Dark Enlightenment rejects liberal democracy as an outdated software system incompatible with freedom and progress. Instead, it argues for breaking up the nation-state into smaller authoritarian city-states, which Yarvin calls “patchworks.” These patchworks will be controlled by tech corporations and run by CEOs. The theory is attached to another idea called accelerationism, which harnesses capitalism and technology to induce radical social change. In fact, Yarvin proposed a plan he called “RAGE”—or “Retire All Government Employees”—as far back as 2012.So, how did this obscure and oxymoronically named philosophy reach the highest echelons of business and political power? Bethany and Luigi trace the theory from its origins to its practical manifestations in Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, Silicon Valley's race to develop artificial intelligence, and the growing push for “Freedom Cities” unfettered from federal regulations. Are the people embracing Dark Enlightenment espousing its ideas because they genuinely believe it is the way forward for humanity? Or do they believe it because it's a way for them to make money? What does it mean for capitalism and democracy if the administration runs the federal government like a tech company?

The claim as to why they're doing this as per usual is "to make things convenient." Of course we know tyranny comes under the guise of convenience. It's a Trojan Horse. McDonald's has long been one of the main major corporations to shift into autonomy. Now, they're turning away massive amounts of employment to bring in AI. Elon Musk, one of the main technocrats pushing AI says himself that it will destroy humanity, yet he continues to develop it. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Brett King. What if, in 50 years, money as we know it no longer exists? Futurist Brett King believes we're heading toward a world where artificial intelligence automates nearly everything from jobs to healthcare to supply chains. As AI disrupts industries at an unprecedented scale, traditional employment may no longer be the main way people earn a living. Universal Basic Income, once a radical idea, may become essential just to keep economies running. But if automation provides food, shelter, and healthcare as a default, will we even need money? Or will wealth become something entirely different? In today's episode of Money Tales, Brett takes us on a journey into the future of money and what it means for all of us. Brett King is an International Bestselling Author, a world- renowned futurist and media personality. President Xi Jinping cited his book Augmented. The life of Michael Parenti is truly extraordinary, as he witnessed two significant cultural movements that changed the word. Growing up in Malibu, he went to school with the likes of Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen, met a young Madonna before she was an international star, hung out in Bob Dylan's house, and saw live acts like Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers long before MTV made them famous. As an internet entrepreneur, he became involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and also saw the early days of Ethereum. He attended hundreds of events, spoke with some of the people who are completely unapproachable today, and found himself in the middle of something magical, naive, and revolutionary. In this episode, we talk about the backstage politics that Michael Parenti witnessed and what it was like to believe in the cyhpherpunk dream more than a decade ago. What's wrong with the U.S. economy? Not much according to Wall Street. But according to Adam Chandler, author of 99% Perspiration: A New Working History of the American Way of Life, there's a fundamental contradiction at the heart of American capitalism. While the U.S. leads in AI investment ($50 billion of $56 billion globally in 2020) and Wall Street performance, Chandler notes, there's significant labor unrest at companies like Starbucks and Amazon. He argues that while the American economy appears strong, many workers aren't seeing the benefits. He notes that real wages have declined over 40 years for people of color and those without college degrees, despite recent technological advances. He critiques the American ethos that equates hard work with success, arguing that this overlooks structural barriers and the role of public investment in success stories. Chandler advocates for better worker protections, clearer work-life boundaries, and stronger social safety nets, citing successful pandemic-era programs like expanded child tax credits and unemployment benefits. He also discusses the concept of a "third life" - spaces outside work and home where people can socialize and engage as citizens, arguing these are crucial for democracy but increasingly rare. Our discussion concludes with a discussion of Universal Basic Income as a potential solution to workforce disruption from AI, with Chandler citing encouraging results from various pilot programs.Adam Chandler is a journalist and author based in New York. A former staff writer at The Atlantic, his work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, WIRED, Vox, Slate, New York Magazine, Texas Monthly, Esquire, TIME, and elsewhere. Chandler is the author of Drive-Thru Dreams: A Journey Through the Heart of America's Fast-Food Kingdom and a recurring guest on The History Channel's The Food That Built America. He regularly appears across television, radio, and digital platforms including CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's Planet Money, Morning Edition, and Here & Now.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show.
