Sacrifice and Persecution (tape recording from Germany in 1975)I want to begin with Thomas' words to my parents on the tape. He went to great depths to explain to them why we came, and why we were willing to make sacrifices. Both of our parents, would have preferred that Thomas get a normal job, and that we would live in a normal house. This reminds me of the first conversation Thomas and I, had after we gave our lives to Jesus. It was early in the morning, foggy and damp out on Highway One. I was pregnant and we were hitchhiking to our tipi location. Thomas said, ”I guess we are Christians now because we believe in Jesus. But we are not going to be like those other Christians, who go aroundpreaching to everyone.”This time, we were far away from California! I was pregnant again, and we were living in a cold brick farmhouse in Nienburg. Maybe God, was using our desire to communicate with my parents, to help us formulate what we  believed we were called to do. Our tape recordings were very personal, just talking in our room, and imagining that someone would listen to our story.

Today, March 16th, I started writing this episode and realized that it's Thomas' birthday. He would have been 73 years old. My family would have had a party for him and made his favorite German cheese cake. Instead, I am listening to him tell about his life, and what was important to him. All of these stories, helped form the direction of my life, and also that of our daughters. In an old episode, I had included a recording that Thomas made to my dad. We had just moved to Germany, and were living with a group of people, in the old farmhouse in Nienburg. My parents were worried about our situation, especially because we were expecting our second child. Thomas assured them that the men were working on renovations, and at the same time trusting God for the difficult circumstances. He said we are willing, to accept the situation, because we believed the Lord had sent us there. In his words:“When we broke down and realized that we were sinners, we asked Jesus to forgive us. We turned our lives totally over to him. Ever since that day, we knew that this was the way for our lives. Jesus opened up our hearts, gave us new life, and revealed himself to us. As I said in the last episode, I still had the baby blanket on the shelf, representing my last pregnancy. The whole story had continued to hang over our heads, leaving us a bit confused. Confused meaning, we thought, we understood the situation correctly. That's why I saved the blanket, with the name Samuel, embroidered on it. In Episode 58, I told the bizaare story, of what took place in Nienburg concerning our baby. A couple that had come from the States, had taken it upon themselves, to say they had a word, or a vision about Thomas and I. They dared to tell us, that my baby could die, if I didn't have the right attitude towards God. Unfortunately, we trusted and believed them, when they also said the child is a boy. They added, that he will be a prophet to Germany, and his name will be Samuel. There you have it; the reason that one of the sisters embroidered a scripture on a blanket as a gift. It said, “His name is Samuel - His whole life, he will be given to the Lord.” It sounds like a strange story, but we believed it, because we trusted them.   When our second baby was born, all the women in the house were watching, and heard the midwife say “Ein Mädchen.” Everyone was surprised, because we were expecting a boy. My first thought was, what is her name? Instantly, the name Esther, came to my mind. Thomas put his hand on her and said “Welcome, little Esther.” We were all rejoicing, because a birth is such a miracle, and the Lord had given us a healthy baby.

Welcome back everyone! I turned 26 at the end of September. It was a milestone - because it marked one year, since Thomas and I, had moved to Munich from Nienburg. The beautiful house in Trudering had been secured and the other families joined us. Who would have known that one year later, we would be saying goodbye, to Gregor, and Alan's families. At least the dust had settled in our midst, by the time Jim's promised helpers arrived. They were Scott and Steve from California, part of a team of leaders who Jim called, the Mobile Ministry. Even though they had never been to Germany, or Europe, they weren't worried about the possible language or cultural barriers. They had experience traveling around in the States and visiting the new  groups. They would spend a few weeks there, to encourage the leaders and offer advice for the next steps. The method at the time, was modelling the community lifestyle, that was popular within the Jesus People Movement. ... For us Americans at the Trudering house, it was pretty special, learning to sing to Jesus, in German. I sometimes felt overwhelmed, like getting a glimpse of God's heart, for the country I now called home. When I hear the old recordings, it brings back all those wonderful memories. We witnessed people's broken lives restored, as they learned to sing with their whole heart to the Lord. Thomas and I, had the sense, that it was a “new day” for the German people!  

She, and many others that we met in Germany, were also “Zeit Zeugen”, (eye witnesses) who had personally experienced, the working of God in their lives. Not only did our paths cross throughout the years in Munich, but also the lives of our daughters as they got older, and started working in their own professions. The special thing in those days, for Thomas and I, was that we were gaining friends in Munich. This was wonderful, because we had left friends and family, behind in California. So now, back to our story in Trudering. We realized that Nadja's Christmas visit, marked our first anniversary since moving to Germany. So much had taken place, in just one year. Thomas had been telling my parents on a tape, that God had done a lot of work in all of our hearts, preparing us for the coming year. Now in Munich, we felt like we were living in a palace. No longer in survival mode like it was in the cold primitive farmhouse in Nienburg. The fact that we now lived in a house with central heating and plenty of bathrooms, we sure didn't take that for granted.

During our three week wait at the apartment, we celebrated my 25th birthday. I wasn't expecting anything, so it was a big surprise, when Jane called us into the kitchen and presented me with a German cake. Thomas had helped Naomi make a card, and Jane gave me a beautiful silk scarf. The photo from that day shows a framed scripture that I had hung by the kitchen table. It was a sweet gift from a woman we knew in the States. It's fun to see that it later showed up, in the living room of our new house. Our next Munich adventure, with Tony and Jane, was an outing to the world famous Octoberfest. This was Thomas' first visit there! We all had fun exploring the huge festival grounds, and admiring the people, who were dressed to perfection, in their traditional costumes. The women in fancy, expensive Dirndls, and then men in Lederhosen (leather shorts with suspenders) and knee socks. Naomi and I, fit right in with our new Dirndls. But I was pretty sure, that I would never see Thomas, wearing those Bavarian Lederhosen. He was too much of a Berliner guy for that! Finally the day arrived, when we could pack up our little car again, and drive to Trudering. Alan who knew the way, had led Peter into Munich, and to our new address. Tony, Jane and Elly took the public transportation. It was so exciting when we all met there, our reunion in Munich! When Peter got out of the bus, and saw the modern house and neighbourhood, he was pretty impressed. It was not like his reaction on arriving at the farmhouse, when he said, “It looks older than the country of America.” Thomas unlocked the gate and then the front door. The entry hall was a bright, open space with marble tiles and a staircase to the upper apartments. We were literally, stepping into our new lives, in the suburbs of a beautiful city. We had left behind, the country living, we had shared in Nienburg. We weren't aware at that moment, what a huge door of opportunity, was being opened to us. The reason we were there, was to create a safe shelter, for all the needy people God would bring to us. In that we had unity, we had not come to Munich for personal gain, or a comfortable lifestyle.

...The men had been scouting out, other cities in the past few weeks, to consider where we should go. They were familiar with the northern cities like Hamburg, Hannover, Bremen and Berlin, because of their work at the markets. I think Thomas, would have been happy, if we would have gone to West Berlin. But he felt confident that as a group, which included Tony now, that God would lead us to the right place. The countdown in leaving Nienburg was building up. Gradually, our days there, were coming to a close. Even just a couple of months before that, we couldn't have imagined that this would happen.

I had a fun beginning this week in preparing for the episode. I had just listened to a recording of Thomas from the summer of 1975. Since it was a beautiful summer morning here, I decided to sit out on my patio. I could hear the birds chirping in the trees and then the nearby church bells started ringing. This was a nice reminder, of our early days, living in Nienburg, Germany. Speaking of the bells, that's how Thomas began his tape recording, to his mother. He says its is 4:50 am and he is sitting under a tree listening to the birds. He was in the town center of Kloppenburg, with Peter, for the flea market. They had a long wait until the official opening time at 6:30 am. So this is how he started the day; “I was able to recognize God's workings in my life and give Him honor, and thank Him. I experienced that the key to finding joy is to give thanks in all things. For all things, from the depths of my heart. Because He is good and He holds us in His hands.” Because the town Kloppenburg, was 60 miles away from Nienburg, Thomas and Peter, arrived the night before and slept in the van. They went every weekend, to a different town, to sell their leather wares. They travelled at night, so they could be first in line, to get a good spot for setting up their table.    Thomas had gotten in the habit, of taking our little tape recorder with him, knowing they would have a long wait. He had started doing that, back at Living Waters, when he went alone on a trip to Eureka. He was always looking for an opportunity, to encourage his mother, and share with her what he was learning. In closing today, That month of August (1975), was quickly bringing new developments, for our ministry goals. Though our circumstances in the farmhouse were pretty good, there was still the question; "Where could we house more people when a second team comes from California? And the most important question was; "Is Nienburg the right place to start a church in Germany?" Bye for now friends!  

Today, I will continue on with the story of our life in Nienburg. Thomas and I, were learning to adjust to living with our two children in one room. In the last “episode recording” of Thomas, you could also hear the typical noises going on in the hallway. Besides the workers in the house, there were four little kids running around, and playing. For Naomi's second birthday with her friends, we set up a picnic table in the garden for the cake and presents. As I was preparing everything, I remembered when she turned one, at Living Waters. My parents and sister, had come to visit us for the weekend. Now our California life seemed so far away.    ... The two couples that invited us to Nienburg, already had friendships with people in a Baptist Church, and a non- denominational fellowship called “Jesus Treff” in Hannover. It was a meeting place in an old building downtown, that was set up as a café, for the young people who hung out on the streets. The  entrance of the building was painted red, and above the door, in blue, with large white letters were the words, “Jesus Treff,” meaning, (meet Jesus). It had the look of a hippie café, except for the word Jesus! Thomas, Peter and Gregor, started joining Loren and Alan on Sundays, to go there for the Sunday service. They loved meeting the people who led the group and learning German praise songs. Most of the Christians were like us, those who had come out of the hippie movement, and had a desire to share the gospel. A couple of the men had even travelled to California, to observe the Jesus People movement, and hear the Christian bands in LA.

In learning to rejoice and be content in all things, it helps to remember God's goodness in our lives. In this episode, I come to the birth of our second child being born in Germany. Despite the trials, that had tried to damper our joyful expectations, we knew that God had a good plan in store for us. Just two years before that, we were in a completely different place, in every way. Our location, our marriage, and our spiritual state. We had been dancing through life, to the sound of Thomas' flute, when suddenly everything changed. We found what we had been looking for, and this led us to the Living Waters Ranch. Our life there, as born again Christians, was so much more, than what we thought we were looking for. This time, I am telling our story about moving to Germany, and I come to the month of April 1975. I had to listen back, to Episode 18, to remember what happened, when our first child was born. I had forgotten how dramatic that day was, with Thomas almost drowning in the Pacific, and then delivering his first baby. In Episode 17, I read from Psalm 18, which described Thomas' experience. God pulled him out of the deep waters. A few minutes after that, he had been ashamed to tell the nearby campers, that Jesus saved him. Now two years later, we had moved across the world, for exactly that purpose. He was no longer ashamed to tell people, that Jesus is the Savior. Living in Germany was like a new start, and Thomas had to get used to speaking German again. He didn't realize how different it would be, after living in California, for three years. He particularly loved, reading his German Bible, and found the words rich and powerful. He hoped that he could convey the truths, that he had learned in English, in his mother tongue. After we had been in Nienburg a few months, my dad asked in a letter, “How's life in Germany?” Here on a tape, Thomas talks about our developments, while Naomi played happily, with her dolly and dishes in the background.

When Thomas took our American friends to get their tourist visa renewed; the first question was, why do you want to stay in the country. He found out very quickly, what the wrong answer was, “I have come as a missionary”. Most of the employees at those offices, would have been a members of one of Germanys state churches, either Lutheran or Catholic. Their response was, “Germany doesn't need missionaries”. Deutschland braucht keine Missionarien! We send missionaries to Africa, India and South America, and we don't need Americans here.” Part of the goal of our ministry, that was developing out of the Jesus People movement, was to be self- supporting. Therefore, it was also possible for the Americans to honestly reply, they would be starting a business, and it would be beneficial for the German economy. Compared to the life of a missionary, that went to a third world country, our job was going to be different. Thomas and I, had read the books about the experiences of missionaries to the jungles of Ecuador, and to war torn China. We had no idea, what kind of trials we would be, up against, living in a western country like Germany. Gradually, we would learn, that our warfare, would be of a spiritual nature. The subject of a “missionary calling”, was something that our parents also didn't really understand. Maybe it would have been easier for them, if our starting point, was going to a Bible Seminary for training. I want to begin with Thomas' words to my parents on the tape. When Thomas and I, left the train station in Berlin, I had flashbacks, of all the times I had been there to get the bus home after work. On the street directly below the train platform, was a grocery store, where I did our shopping. I had so many memories there, of being on my own, and feeling lost in the store. Obviously, they didn't have any American products, like I was used to. At least, I felt confident, in how to say “hello”, Guten Tag, oder Guten Abend, to the cashier. The most difficult, and scary part, was trying to ask a question. I didn't want to sound rude, by using the wrong words. Basically, there are two different ways, of formulating a sentence depending on, if you are using the formal pronoun for “you” being “Sie”, or the informal pronoun “Du”. I think I never really got it right, but the lady working there, was nice enough to help me anyway. Then the next problem would be, getting on the bus with my heavy plastic grocery bags, and looking for a seat. I was always nervous, if I would need to say, excuse me, or sorry. The German word was like a tongue twister for me, Entschuldigung bitte! But now things would be different, Thomas and I, were traveling together on our way home to Nienburg. This was a new experience for Thomas, leaving his parent's place,, and starting a new life with his own family. First we prayed together, that God would protect us, as we drove through East Germany. It was a bit nerve wracking, especially when the guards stopped the train and came on board. But I knew, that I would have to get used to it, if we wanted to visit his family. When I reflect on those early days, I realize that we had definitely, entered into a new era by moving to Germany. We had grown up some, we were a little more mature, and believed that it was God's plan for us. For me, it was going to be a mixture, of drawing on the little bit of language and culture that I knew. At the same time, it was new for both of us, to live in a town like Nienburg, in West Germany. The traditions and culture, were different, than the life Thomas knew growing up in the big city of Berlin.    

A NEW ERA !!! This was the beginning of a "new era" for our little family. We were leaving the USA and returning to Germany. This time we would not be living in Thomas' home town, West Berlin, which was the walled city within East Germany. We were on our way to West Germany, near the city of Hannover, to a very old quaint town called Nienburg. It was going to be a brand new experience for Thomas, myself,' and little Naomi!              And it is also a new era for me, in writing the upcoming episodes! Like I said in the introduction of the podcast, I had no idea when I first came to Europe, that I would end up raising our children in Germany. So now, I get to go back into the time machine, and review everything that happened. With a little help from my friends, and looking online, I am finding out all kinds of cool things. So let' s get started, this is what took place, back in December of 1974! I said in the last episode, that we were flying from San Francisco to New York, with Peter and his family. Some friends we knew from Living Waters, would be picking us up at the airport there. The goal within our ministry, was to reach the young hippie drop outs, that lived in the inner cities. That's why so many of us were prepared to leave the seclusion, and beauty of the ranches, in the country. It was time to be out sharing the gospel, the love of Jesus, that we had so miraculously come to know.

Häufig das ganze auch in einem Livestream!Wir kennen uns jetzt schon seid ca. acht Jahren, und zwar aus seiner Zeit in Nienburg. Ich habe zusammen mit Kevin meinen ersten Motor revidiert und ihm bei seiner Arbeit einen Blick über die Schulter werfen können. So bin ich danach selbst in der Lage, meine Motoren auch mal selber machen zu können.Ich glaube, so offen hat Kevin bis dato noch nie über sich, seine Person, sein Leben in und neben der Rollerszene gesprochen,. Das zumindest hat er mir gegenüber im Anschluss des Gesprächs verlauten lassen. Dafür zolle ich ihm an dieser Stelle und auf jeden Fall schon mal meinen allergrößten Respekt. Denn wir sind an vielen Stellen im Gespräch in sehr persönlichen Erfahrung und Momente eingestiegen.Es war somit wieder ein sehr emotionales Gespräch! Definitiv anders, als es bei Wilfried und Petra war, aber auch wirklich sehr vertraulich. Hört am besten selbst rein und macht euch euer eigenes Bild. NIKA-Preisträgerin Anja Lange aus Gandesbergen übt Kritik an SchulbüchernIn der ersten Stunde geht es heute um das Thema Landwirtschaft. „Bitte einmal alle das Schulbuch auf Seite 48 aufschlagen.“ Müdes Augenblinzeln. „Jetzt!“ Leises Papierrascheln im Raum. Auf der besagten Seite geht es um den Beruf des Landwirts. Es gibt Texte und bunte Darstellungen, wie ein Landwirt seine Tiere quält, wie er tonnenweise Sondermüll produziert und wie er diesen dann in der Umwelt entsorgt. Viele der Schülerinnen und Schüler bekamen vor einigen Jahren in dieser Klasse womöglich ihren ersten Eindruck davon, wie ein landwirtschaftlicher Betrieb arbeitet – und Anja Lange war entsetzt.Auch wenn die Klasse in diesem Beispiel fiktiv ist, die Schulbuchseiten waren real. Und Lange, die mit ihrer Familie einen realen Sauen- und Ackerbaubetrieb in Gandesbergen (Kr. Nienburg) betreibt, setzte prompt ein Schreiben an den damaligen Kultusminister Bernd Althusmann auf. Der Inhalt: deutliche Kritik an diesem falschen Bild, das von der Landwirtschaft im Schulbuch gezeichnet wird.Für ihren beherzten Einsatz wurde Anja Lange vor zehn Jahren mit dem NIKA-Preis des Verlags Agrar-Media sowie der Landfrauenverbände Niedersachsen und Weser-Ems ausgezeichnet. Am 28. April 2020 wird die Leiche einer unbekleideten jungen Frau am Ufer der Weser bei Balge, im Landkreis Nienburg in Niedersachsen, gefunden. Sofort ist klar, dass hier ein Verbrechen stattgefunden hat. Der Frau wurden die Hände mit einem komplizierten Bondage Knoten auf dem Rücken gefesselt und ihre Füße sind mit einem Stromkabel an eine 21 kg schwere Waschbetonplatte gebunden worden. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was.
