Christopher has a fascinating journey that took him from an accounting executive to a frontline manager for a Series C company. We'll unravel the secrets behind his disciplined, people-focused approach to sales and how his love for sports and appreciation for hard work have shaped his successful career. Christopher also gives us a peek behind the curtains of his time at Reebok and his unique experience with product fit testing. Navigating from the nuances of frontline management to the broader picture of executive leadership, we delve into the challenges of leading a team and the importance of empathy. Christopher shares invaluable insights from his own experiences as a frontline manager and offers advice for those seeking a mentor. He also emphasizes the importance of striking the right balance between work and life, underscoring the need to disconnect from work and focus on other aspects of life. Finally, we turn our discussion to the critical role of CRM in business growth. Christopher shares his hands-on experience with CRM rescues and highlights the need for setting up a CRM with the right business purpose in mind. We explore the common challenges that can arise in the absence of subject matter expertise and how to ensure alignment within departments. Whether you're a sales leader or an interested professional, this episode is packed with practical advice and insights. Don't miss out on this enlightening conversation with one of the industry's best! Chris has 14 years of sales experience in B2B SaaS, starting as an individual contributor and methodically climbing the ranks from front-line manager to senior leadership. He has been part of the $2M to $10M ARR journey with a startup that was acquired for $100M. He has led sales teams for Series C and Series D companies that grew revenues from $20M to $40M ARR (in 2 years) and $17M to $23M ARR (in 6 months) respectively, and are currently valued at $1B and $1.5B. Most recently, as the CRO of a bootstrapped company, Chris grew topline revenue 78% by selling to Fortune 1000 companies. He is currently supporting early-stage companies as a Fractional VP of Sales, and he serves as an expert advisor for Primary Venture Partners' portfolio companies. Chris has a compelling track record of success building and leading high-performing revenue teams can be attributed to my disciplined approach to coaching and developing sales professionals, fostering team selling dynamics, and my knack for designing and implementing customer-centric sales processes reinforced by world-class sales methodologies.   Quotes:  "I think you were alluding to perspective, right? And my background is really in B2B SaaS. So I've spent the better part of 14 years with growing Stage B, two B software companies, and I've been part of several different journeys."    "And you don't necessarily need to operate in the B two B SaaS space to still build kind of like a healthy, sustainable business and to learn from other operators who have done it outside of your industry sector. So it's been really rewarding, taking some of the best practices in terms of how to build and scale A team with a software company, refine it a little bit so it reflects the nuance of either like a services based company or maybe a marketplace type environment, and then implement that there because they're all suffering from very similar self inflicted wounds, so to speak."    "Discipline will always trump motivation. I think motivation is a feeling, and feelings come and go. One day you could be motivated, and the next day you might not be, but discipline is like a way of operating."    "Leaders don't always have to make the best decision. They just need to make sure the best decision is made."  Links: Christopher.Amrod@gmailcom LinkedIn: Christopher Amrod Get this episode and all other episodes of Sales Lead Dog at https://www.empellorcrm.com/salesleaddog

My guest today is Ben Sun, co-founder and general partner at Primary Venture Partners. Primary focuses on investing in companies at seed that were founded in New York and has the largest seed stage portfolio impact team. Some of his investment include Jet.com, Coupang, K Health and Mirror. Previously he co-founded community connect, which was one of the first social networking companies. We discuss the evolution of social, why he's so bullish of companies coming out of New York, being anti thesis and a macro analysis of the current seed market. Questions I ask Ben: What was your initial attraction to entrepreneurship? How did you go about founding Community Connect? What made you decide to become a VC? How did Primary come together? What was your reaction then to Facebook starting off in high school I understand you invest in New York companies, which we will get to, but how did you end up investing in Coupang? Why the focus on New York? How has Silicon Alley transformed in the past 15 years? Why seed investing? New York City Summit? Process to figure out if a person could be the right founder? How do you approach this current market when it comes to price? It seems like lots of VCs are building out services and a platform for portfolio founders. How do you think about Primary's advantage when it comes to your own platform? Are you finding that many investors that traditionally invest in Series A or when a company has PMF are coming down to seed? I know you are an anti-thesis investor, would you mind unpacking that? How do you process and analyze when founders pitch ideas to you? Has any of your processes changed when it came to COVID? What's one thing you would change about VC? What's one book that inspired you personally and one book that inspired you professionally? What's one piece of advice for founders?

Ben Sun of Primary Venture Partners joins Nick to discuss Distribution vs. Product, Founders vs. Markets, and Winning Deals in a Hyper-Competitive Seed Market. In this episode, we cover: Can you tell us a bit about your founder journey?  What are your thoughts on the major differences and challenges now versus when you started a Community Connect? Is there a bias at Primary toward consumer investments? What region focus does Primary have? Is Miami a viable tech center or is this hype? What is the thesis at Primary? What areas does the Primary team focus on (strategic, sweat equity, talent recruitment)? How collaborative is that formative ideas stage between Primary and the entrepreneurs? I imagine, some of them come and they're ready to raise, and if it's a great fit, you invest, but in other circumstances, ideas may not be fully fleshed out. How much of a role do you play? We've had many folks on the program that say, it's all about the market. The team is important, but there's sort of a base level of competence. Then many others say it's just all about the team and the best teams will find their way to the best markets. Where do you stand on that, and how does that square with kind of the way that you look at talent?  Ben, you wrote this tweet, quote, there is no longer such a thing as proprietary deal flow in VC. It's now more about winning a deal versus picking a deal. You know, I'm curious, what has changed? Is it supply side of capital at seed? Is it other factors? What prompted the tweet? So put you on the spot, what is the win rate at Primary? And why do y'all win, going head to head against other firms? What do you know you need to get better at? What is the best way for listeners to connect with you and follow along with Primary?

Industries don’t come much larger than self-storage. It’s $38 billion a year. And disruptors don’t come much more determined than Rahul Gandhi, CEO & Co-Founder of MakeSpace. Based in New York, it’s a convenient, simple, on-demand storage solution that takes the “self” out of “self storage.” To create a new kind of storage company, Rahul raised $100 million in venture capital from Founders Fund, Upfront Ventures, 8VC, Lowercase Capital, 8VC, Primary Venture Partners, Winklevoss Capital, Iron Mountain, and… yes… Carmelo Anthony of Portland Trail Blazers. MakeSpace took the struggle out of storage—and reinvented an antiquated industry in the process. They designed a hassle-free experience that allows people to store & retrieve their belongings on-demand, so they can skip the whole schlep-to-a-storage-unit thing. In just a few years, Rahul has expanded to two dozen major cities in North America. To support this seamless experience, he built the industry’s first fully integrated system, from back-end routing to warehouse logistics, and a consumer app complete with a digital photo inventory of stored items. Prior, Rahul was Principal with Primary Venture Partners. And in this 20-minute conversation, he reveals how he’s scaled the team that takes your stuff (…and brings it back!)

You don’t have to search high or low in the tech community to find tips and tricks on every function in a business - product, engineering, fundraising - it’s all out there. Only recently have mindfulness, leadership and mental health become top topics that founders and investors have started systematically talking about. In this episode I talked to one of the best advocates of mental health and coaching in the tech community today - Steve has a unique perspective on coaching early stage founders and we talked about the challenges and opportunities in the space. Steve is a trained executive and performance coach. He works with founders and executives to help them fulfill their potential as leaders inside and outside their organizations. Steve decided to pursue a coaching certification because he had a strong desire to engage with founders more deeply and develop stronger relationships based on respect, trust, authenticity and vulnerability.  Steve’s words are important for all folks in the tech community to be better leaders. Steve has had a storied career as an investor. He has been investing in the NYC tech ecosystem for the last decade. He straddles B2B and B2C with a bias toward the weird. His human centric approach to investing has enabled him to lead investments in Giphy, Bowery Farming, Brightwheel, Groups, Boom Aerospace, Care/of, Citizen, Wag!, theSkimm, Breather, View The Space and many more.  This episode was a ton of fun - Steve's authenticity is audible in his voice. It's no question why he's been such a great champion for founders.

Thank you again Courtney Nelson for introducing me to our guest today, Byron Ling ( https://www.canaan.com/team/byron-ling ). Byron ( https://www.canaan.com/team/byron-ling ) is a partner at Canaan ( https://www.canaan.com/ ). Canaan is an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in visionaries with transformative ideas. Byron invests in consumer companies that are reinventing the way we shop, entertain and educate ourselves. Some of his investments include Roman, Papa, and Bravo Sierra. He was previously an investor at Primary Venture Partners and, prior to the venture world, was an early operator at Gilt Groupe. It was great chatting with Bryon about his diligence process and the effects COVID has on the early stage investing ecosystem, so without further ado, here's Byron. One book that inspired Byron personally is The Audacity of Hope ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307237702?camp=1789&creativeASIN=0307237702&ie=UTF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Barack Obama. One book that inspired him professionally is Who: The A Method to Hiring ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EL6RWY?camp=1789&creativeASIN=B001EL6RWY&ie=UTF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Geoff Smart. You can follow Byron on both Twitter and Medium @byronling1. You can also follow your host, Mike, on Twitter @mikegelb ( https://twitter.com/MikeGelb ). You can also follow for episode announcements @consumervc ( https://twitter.com/ConsumerVc ). In this episode we discuss - * What attracted him to early stage startups and consumer? After Gilt Groupe, what compelled him to head into venture capital? What's his due diligence process at the seed and Series A? What are the milestones that an entrepreneur has to accomplish at each of those stages? What does he focus on the most at each stage - market size, traction, founding team, product-market fit, founder market fit? * What are a few qualities in a founder that he looks for? **How does he think about early traction? How can a founder de-risk product market fit? Difference between opportunistic vs thematic investors, where does he sit on the spectrum? * How is he thinking about coronavirus as it relates to consumer investing? Is he shifting strategy away/towards companies/verticals? Are you pausing investments in a particular space? Is he concerned about some current portfolio companies' ability to raise? How is he adjusting to new work protocols (remote working, etc) and if so, is that having an impact? * What macro consumer trends is he focused on? What is one thing that he would change about venture capital? What's one piece of advice for founders of consumer startups?
