Seven years ago, I started the Mind Movement Health Podcast without knowing exactly where it would lead. I didn't feel completely ready. I certainly didn't have everything figured out. But I started anyway. To celebrate International Podcast Day, I'm taking you behind the microphone and reflecting on seven years of podcasting, the lessons I've learned, the things that have surprised me, and how hundreds of conversations and episodes have shaped the way I communicate, listen and connect with others. And while this episode is about podcasting, the lessons extend far beyond creating a podcast. We talk about starting before you feel ready, choosing consistency over perfection, becoming a better listener, doing things that make you nervous, staying curious and recognising that you may never fully know the impact your words have on someone else. In this trip to this familiar domain, we don’t get to see much of the landscape, and instead witness scenes in nature, as we listen to the lady say these words to her confidante, in response to the confidante’s words of consolation, as the man continues to remain parted away: “There's no redemption, my friend! Slowly, the buttercup is sprouting tender clusters, ready to be plucked; Upon the soaring branch of the nectar-filled mango tree, the cuckoo calls out aloud; Akin to River Kaveri, which waters nations many, and brims over with copious floods, burying bamboo oars, and then recedes as rains cease, appears the muddy waters in the canal. The fine bull with a swaying hump grazes upon the grass, and then, along with its gentle-gaited mate, drinks up the muddy water in the canal, till its thirst abates, and then rests under the short-trunked Portia tree. As soft pollen of the tree's flowers, appearing akin to gold dust, shower on it, it sleeps on the heaps of sand piled together. Such is this fertile season of spring! Alas, it's a season, which is delightful only for those who have a companion to relish one's fine beauty!” Let’s listen to the lady’s song amidst the calls of a cuckoo! The lady starts by saying that there’s no salvation for her. Then without explaining why, she goes on to talk about the changes around her, pointing to the blooming buttercup flowers and the singing cuckoos sitting on the mango trees. Then, leaving these scenes, the lady talks about River Kaveri, at the time the river is in full spate, and then later as the rains recede, how these waters too become scarce and appear muddy. She equates this image to that of the water’s condition in a canal. After munching on newly sprouted grass, a bull arrives to this spot along with its mate and guzzles the water to its heart’s content, and then sleeps under the portia tree, even as the flowers shower their gold dust on the bull and its mate. The lady concludes by saying such is the season of spring, which is a thing of joy and pleasure only for those who have their companions to celebrate their beauty! The lady implies that as the man is away, and spring was here, it was impossible for her to bear with the situation. Yet again, an intricate lesson on managing one’s emotions by paying attention to the outer world and one’s own inner world. What better cure can there be other than to ‘Observe and Express’, that too to a caring friend!

They discuss their research on identifying Wi-Fi-enabled smart outlets after a fire and distinguishing their components from those of standard AC adapters.Madison and Elias burned and disassembled devices, then documented the surviving components with photographs and X-rays. In their experiments, relays and Wi-Fi chips remained recognizable even after substantial heat exposure. They explain how those components could help an investigator identify a smart outlet in a fire scene and decide what additional evidence to examine.The conversation also explores why identification matters: a smart outlet can remotely supply power to a device that has already been left switched on. The students discuss a case from Sweden involving a remotely activated soldering iron, along with the potential value and challenges of obtaining device activity records. What does it mean to be love for God's world?In this episode of Behind the Scenes, host Kevin Van Hall sits down with Rev. Laura Johnson to preview her upcoming sermon, “Be Love for God's World,” the final message in North Raleigh United Methodist Church's series exploring its new purpose: Belong as you are. Become like Jesus. Be love for God's world.Together, Kevin and Laura explore 1 John 4:7–21, one of the Bible's most powerful passages about the love of God and what it means for Christians to put that love into action. At the center of the passage is the declaration that God is love, along with the call for those who know God to love one another.The conversation begins by looking at the historical setting of 1 John and the challenges facing the early Christian church. Laura explains how the letter emphasizes that Christian faith is not simply about spiritual ideas or beliefs. Because God became incarnate in Jesus, Christian love is meant to be expressed through concrete, physical acts of love toward other people.Kevin and Laura then explore how this passage connects directly to NRUMC's new purpose statement and to Wesleyan and United Methodist theology. Laura explains how prevenient grace, justifying grace, and sanctifying grace correspond to the movement from belonging, to becoming, to being love for God's world.Prevenient grace reminds us that God's love and invitation come before anything we do. Justifying grace describes the experience of turning toward Christ and receiving God's grace and forgiveness. Sanctifying grace is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, continually shaping us to become more like Jesus. In the Wesleyan tradition, that ongoing transformation ultimately means becoming increasingly perfected in love.The conversation asks an important question: How do we know that we are growing in our faith?According to Laura's reading of 1 John, one measure is love. Are we becoming more loving toward God? Are we becoming more loving toward the people around us? Are we learning to love not only those who love us, but also people who are different from us or difficult for us to understand?Kevin and Laura discuss the passage's powerful statement that “there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” They explore the relationship between fear, judgment, grace, and Christian assurance, including John Wesley's own search for a deep sense of assurance in God's love.The episode also considers how fear can create division and distance between people. Rather than responding to people we do not understand with fear, Laura suggests that curiosity can itself be a form of love. The conversation explores what it might look like to approach other people with openness, compassion, forgiveness, and a desire to understand.At the heart of the discussion is the difference between believing in God's love and actually living out God's love. 1 John does not leave love as an abstract theological idea. It calls Christians to concrete love for one another. As Laura explains, the love of God is self-giving and self-sacrificial, modeled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.That brings the conversation back to the final part of NRUMC's purpose: Be Love for God's World.If we belong because God first loved us, and if we are becoming more like Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit, then the natural movement of Christian faith is outward. At the center of the discussion is a question: what happens when an ancient story of Alexander, Hephaestion, and Roxana is filtered through the erotic and social culture of Renaissance Rome? Alexander the Great's relationship to his childhood friend and general Hephaestion has long been a subject of debate. Were they lovers, or simply life partners?
