To end our Gene Simmons, Greatest Villain of the '80s? month, we swing that pendulum so far back from the brilliance that was Never Too Young to Die, that we land firmly in the camp of Gene Simmons is a terrible actor. It's sad, after the brilliance that was Velvet Von Ragnar. Wanted Dead or Alive is based on a TV show from the late '50s, starring Steve McQueen. Along with Gene Simmons, the movie stars Rutger Hauer, Robert Guillame, Mel Harris, and William Russ.

Continuing Issue 76 of Double Reel, the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. This is the Remakes Tribunal where we put two films up for judgement. Continuing this month's Heist movie theme, our Remake on Trial is the 1999 update to The Thomas Crown Affair. Can Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan match up to the iconic original pairing of Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway? Then we have a Parole Board for a film which didn't work the first time and see if a remake would fix its problems. This time it's the disastrous Ben Affleck-Charlize Theron vehicle Reindeer Games. The first two parts of the issue are out already - Double Reel Monthly and Classics & Hidden Gems - and we will have a Spotlight on the Coen Brothers next week. Listen to understand how to dramatize a character's internal change. Welcome to our third entry in our character arc series; and the first where we talk about characters that actually change. And positively, too. We deep dive into BARBIE, WIDOWS and ALL OF US STRANGERS to work out what makes an arc feel positive -- even if the film itself is heartbreaking. All three films are "positive arcs" that feel wildly different. We speculate whether that's due to the nature of the relationship questions, the use of additive/subtractive rewards; and whether it's do with the connection of the characters needs and their goals. We further crystalize two tools we've been kicking around: The relationship question — take a character question ("will she learn to connect?") and pose it as a relationship problem ("will these two grow closer or further apart?"). Additive vs subtractive rewards — We continue buildling on this idea from our Steadfast episodes. Does the story give the character something or take something away? And is that a good or a bad thing? And Mel brings up a third: Repeating a beat from a different angle so we can trace a character's gradual evolution. We also debate whether Barbie's void scene is a producer's note personified — a director going into the endless nothing to spell the themes out one more time. All this and more on DZ-130! Versprochen.
Ep. 42 - The Great Escape & Escape from New YorkThis week, we are escaping into the worlds of two films video game auteur Hideo Kojima considers massive inspirations: John Sturges' The Great Escape (1963) and John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981). These classic escape thrillers provided the structural blueprint and antihero swagger for Kojima's gaming masterpiece Metal Gear Solid. We look at how The Great Escape defined high stakes stealth mechanics and tension on screen, while Snake Plissken's dystopian, punk rock cynicism birthed Solid Snake himself. It is a double feature about cinematic cross-pollination, the evolution of antiheroes, and how obsession turns beloved media into groundbreaking art. Whether it is Steve McQueen jumping fences or Kurt Russell sneering at the government, both films prove that great video games owe everything to classic action cinema.
Another favourite from our archives...Almost every movie and television show needs cars, and auto companies are happy to supply them – because it helps sell a lot of cars. We'll look back at James Bond and Starsky & Hutch, and explore auto partnerships with movie franchises like Transformers and Marvel. We'll also tell a crazy story of how the most sought-after car from a Steve McQueen movie was finally found – and the cosmic coincidence that led to its discovery. Ne parliamo come sempre insieme a Massimiliano BolcioniInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tramestrane_podcast?utm_source=qr&igsh=MWhnNm1qcXc5aTdwcA==mail: tramestranepodcast@gmail.com

Summer is passing quickly and we are celebrating the 250th celebration of the birth of the United States of America! We read some letters and are glad to welcome Mike Ryzy back into the Broadcast Foxhole. What we have been playing lately covers Mike's cow scenarios, and Dave and Dave's playing of Scenario BFP-174 The Castle of Onega. In the rules segment we cover the ever important rules D12 and D15 (part one, to be continued in episode 390). Did you know that sledges have reindeer pulling them? How cool is that!?! We think that you need to learn to drive your motorcycle like Steve McQueen in the Great Escape! So have a listen to this show. You will be glad you did. How about that comedy bit? In our latest Session, Juliet talks to film director, visual artist and composer Imran Perretta about his new feature film Ish (2025), due to be released in the UK and Ireland on 31 July, as well as his short film the destructors (2020) and his installation A Riot in Three Acts, first exhibited at Somerset House in 2024. They talked about how the works were shaped by Thatcherism and neoliberalism, the War on Terror and the genocide in Gaza, institutional racism and police profiling, as well as how the works combine formal experimentation with deeply personal narratives, bringing in cinematic influences such as Abbas Kiarostami, Steve McQueen and Cristian Mungiu.
It may come as a surprise to some Mustang owners and fans, but the idea of celebrating National Mustang Day each year on (or around) the car's public introduction day of April 17th didn't originate from Ford Motor Company. Rather, it was the brainchild of the late Steve Hall, originally set up to be an annual fundraiser for his newly founded Mustang Owner's Museum via the sale of windshield stickers to participating clubs. The museum created a National Mustang Day website to facilitate the sale of the window clings and list all of the participating club activities planned for that day, as well as to register for the museum's own NMD events beginning in 2018.Much like the creation of the Mustang Owner's Museum, Steve's idea of founding an annual National Mustang Day on the anniversary of the car's public birthday was well-embraced. And after that first one was in the books, the practice of owners and fans gathering on National Mustang Day has grown into a global phenomenon. For 2026, Mischelle Hall invited the podcast to attend both days, to be a guest speaker at the museum show and set up our Meet & Greet tent.Friday night's Hall of Fame dinner was emceed by MCA past president Steve Prewitt, who introduced the inductee for the Mustang Industry category, Bud Magaldi, chief designer and styling design manager of the Fourth Generation (SN95) 1994 Mustang. Next up was the Mustang Journalism category with fellow Mustang author Brad Bowling, perhaps best known for his unearthing of Steve McQueen's original Bullitt movie car. John Force was inducted in the Mustang Racing category, but the retired NHRA drag racing legend was unable to attend. The final Hall of Fame category, Mustang Hobby, was posthumously awarded to the late Steve Hall, founder of the Mustang Owner's Museum and National Mustang Day itself.Smiles were the order of the day on Saturday, as the cars started rolling into the museum lots before 7 a.m. for the National Mustang Day car show. There were easily over 100 Mustangs on display outside, with attendees coming in and out of the museum and filling the presentation tent all afternoon. The first guest speaker was Angela Graham from AutoBarn Classic Cars, who shared insights about the facility, including classic car sales, consignment, storage and memorabilia. The second speaker was Matt Grev from Wheelhouse Performance Racing, formerly the Ford Performance Racing School. Matt discussed the details of the continuation of the school under Wheelhouse and how they can help anyone take their driving expertise to the next level, whether they are beginners or experienced racers. We were able to catch some of the talk given by the third guest speaker, none other than our friend Emeline King, Ford's first-ever black female transportation designer. Known as the interior designer of the Fourth Generation 1994 SN-95 Mustang under Bud Magaldi, Emeline came down to witness Bud's induction into the HoF as well as to offer the backstory behind her inspirational book, "What Do You Mean A Black Girl Can't Design Cars? Emeline King, She Did It!"This year's 9th Annual Mustang Owner's Museum National Mustang Day event wrapped up with a brief awards ceremony, with each car show award winner chosen by the Hall of Fame Inductees, the Mustang Owner's Museum and by event attendees. They were:Carrie Boschan - Black 1996 SVT Cobra CoupeChosen by Mustang Industry Inductee Bud MagaldiBrian Rosenstein - Grey 1985 GTChosen by Mustang Journalism inductee Brad BowlingMike & Lorie Williams - Bright Yellow 1977 Mustang II ConvertibleJimy Reid - Vapor Blue 2024 Dark HorseChosen by Emeline King on behalf of Mustang Hobby inductee Steve HallEric Hausfeld - Dusk Rose 1967 Coupe Sports SprintChosen by the Mustang Owner's MuseumCJ Carter - Ivy Green1966 Shelby GT350And finally, the winner of the drawing for the 2009 Shelby GT500 Giveaway Car was Anthony Greene – who was actually in attendance when his name was drawn!

This week Alex and Tyler embark on a quick rehash of the reaction to our last (B)at the Movies episode; reminisce about the days when you could still wrap your mind around the Star Wars universe; discover Tyler's Corvette origin story (and possibly that of the frame-swapped C2); reveal the BaT staff habit of taking conference calls in various cars parked downstairs at HQ; fuel ethanol-based paranoia; and compare the lot numbers (beat #818 - Ed.) when they started at BaT to the 250,000 we've now surpassed. That of course lends itself to a discussion of the Ferrari 288 GTOthat is set to wrap up next week, one that includes Tyler casually dropping yet another surprise ride-along story.Moving on to the bikes: the pair discuss the preponderance of cool two-wheelers in Europe and several great recent moto sales on BaT, both in the US and abroad, including a host of Vincents and a special Indian. They take a not-unexpected digression into Steve McQueen territory, pause for a Harley revelation, and finally, spend a few minutes talking about Alex's recent impromptu trip to the UK to spend some time on track at Goodwood.Follow along! John Reardon sits down with Cameron Barr, founder and CEO of Craft + Tailored, to discuss their favorite, and not-so-favorite, watch placements in film and TV since 1964, when James Bond first notably looked at his Rolex Submariner in Goldfinger. The conversation works through some of the most memorable watch moments on screen, from the Patek Philippe pocket watch in The Thomas Crown Affair, to Steve McQueen's Heuer Monaco in Le Mans, to the trench watch scene in Pulp Fiction. They also revisit the fake Patek Philippe that took center stage in Drive, and the fake Patek Philippe watches used in Succession and Friends and Neighbors that were so obviously props they pulled viewers right out of the story.John and Cameron also highlight the moments Patek got the screen treatment it deserved, from the ref. 5037J that James Gandolfini's presented in The Sopranos, to the ref. 5270 at Wempe New York in Billions. They share their experiences working with prop masters and explain why the small details matter so much for believability.Cameron then takes us behind the scenes of Good Fortune, last year's comedy with Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, and Seth Rogen, where he was cast to play himself. He explains how the role came about, how the watches in the film were carefully chosen to suit each character, and the story behind "Pretty Baby", the yellow gold Daytona that became a character of its own.
Send us Fan MailBULLITTRight in time for Father's Day, TGTPTU with special guest Erik W. Van Der Wolf introduce their fourth of four directors for Season 17's 4x4 HACKS with director Peter Yates entry into the Dad Film canon: BULLITT (1968). Starring the coolest Caucasian cat to strut the silver screen, the American Great Escapee himself, Steve McQueen (no, Zoomer, not that Steve McQueen, he's Black and a director, British and alive) plays the titular SFPD Lt. Frank Bullitt responsible for protecting against organized crime the DA's witness who, no spoilers if it's in the first act, gets got in his safehouse hotel room. Bullitt's partner also gets the gat and instead of a this-time-it's-personal, Yates plays the action procedural as Bullitt keeps his gun(s) holstered and his artist-architect girlfriend groovy and there's that car chase action sequence we all know and love. Robert Vaughn plays the DA whose actions not villainous but smarmy all the same; Jacqueline Bisset plays the girlfriend whose uncertain whether Bullitt's dark world and hers of hope and peace and beauty can coexist; and Don Gordon plays his normal role (as he would later in Papillon and The Towering Inferno) as second fiddle to whomever McQueen (again, Zoomer, the White dude who raced cars and defied death in his spare time and might have had dyslexia, not the enfant terrible of British designer fashion) plays. Also, Robert Duvall plays a taxi driver. Scored by Lalo Schifrin, the West Coast jazz sound really swings to make a film that vibes like few others. This week, host Ken goes deep on McQueen, Ryan on Quentin Tarantino, Erik mansplains Dad Films to Thomas, and together guest and Zoomer develop a working dichotomy of Vietnam vs. WWII Dad-Films. We also learn !!!EXCLUSIVE!!! that Steve McQueen faked his death. That McQueen's one hep cat, daddy-o. Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out in December 1977, made $116 million in the US alone, and lost the box office crown for that year to exactly one movie: Star Wars. Not a bad second place.Josh, Garrett, and David kick off Spielberg in Space Month with Spielberg's pre-E.T. love letter to alien optimism. They get into why Richard Dreyfus was the right guy for a role Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, and Gene Hackman all passed on, why the mashed potatoes scene is actually the emotional center of the whole thing, and what it means that this is basically the only alien movie where nobody tries to blow anything up. All three hosts land at four and a half stars. Josh finally wins the Letterboxd guessing game. David's son watched the aliens and said they looked like naked five-year-olds.So Many Sequels is your book club for movies. Follow along at somanysequels.com and @somanysequelspod on Instagram.

Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageMark Canton, producer of 300, Immortals, Men in Black, Air Force One, and My Best Friend's Wedding, former President of Worldwide Production at Warner Bros., and former Chairman of Columbia Pictures and Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Companies, joins host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about a career defined by passion and instinct. From delivering mail on the Warner Bros. lot as a college student to greenlighting some of Hollywood's most beloved films, Canton reflects on the legends he learned from, the risks he took, and why he still smells the circus every time he walks onto a sound stage.Queens, New York, and Family (02:34): Canton traces his love of film to a father who survived being shot down over France in WWII, won an Oscar for a short film on Van Gogh, and went on to do publicity for Hitchcock and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to a mother who was a published poet. The movies, he says, were always destiny.Learning from the Greats on Papillon (15:22): Working for director Franklin Schaffner in Jamaica and living between the houses of Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, Canton learned what it meant to commit to a film. From the Warner Bros. Mail Room to Running the Studio (20:31): Canton traces his rise from UCLA film student to head of Worldwide Production at Warner Bros., sharing stories about the Vacation franchise, Caddyshack, and Lethal Weapon.Taking the Helm at Columbia Pictures (39:22): Recruited by Peter Guber and Jon Peters, Canton became Chairman of Columbia Pictures and later oversaw Columbia TriStar. He reflects on the team he assembled and the record-breaking run that followed, including Jerry Maguire, My Best Friend's Wedding, Bad Boys, and Air Force One.The Art of the Difficult Screening (47:51): Canton recounts two defining test screening moments: a chaotic preview of Scorsese's The Age of Innocence in a New Jersey bowling alley, and a tough audience response to Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional that led to an ultimatum and a reworked film that became a modern classic. The Cable Guy and No Regrets (50:43): Canton defends paying Jim Carrey $17 million and notes what history confirmed: the film launched Ben Stiller's directing career, introduced Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Judd Apatow. He also recalls his affectionate standoff with Mike Nichols over the ending of Wolf. What Keeps Audiences Coming Back (54:50): Canton argues that what fills theaters today is the same thing that made Purple Rain a phenomenon: the feeling of a live, communal, irreplaceable experience.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Mark CantonProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Mark Canton:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_CantonIMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004799/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markcanton/?hl=enFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com
Hustling on the streets of New York. Wagering with a U.S. president over who could sleep with more women. Knocking back beers with Elvis. Waving his gun around at the funeral of Jay Sebring, one of the victims of Charles Manson’s murderous family. The same family that had their sights now set on the King of Cool, Steve McQueen, who needed the speed of a Mustang or the power of a Magnum to keep Charlie’s crazy cult at bay.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The MuscleCar Place Podcast, guest host Bernie McPartland sits down with Mecum Auctions Senior Communications Manager David Morton during Mecum Houston for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of the fastest-growing forces in the collector car world. What starts as a conversation about auctions quickly evolves into a deeper discussion about why live automotive experiences still matter in today's digital world. David shares how his background in sports marketing helped shape Mecum's growth strategy, why the company continues doubling down on live events rather than online-only auctions, and how Mecum has effectively become a motorsport-style entertainment experience that draws massive crowds, television audiences, and passionate enthusiasts nationwide. The episode also dives into the rapidly changing collector car market, including the explosion of trucks, SUVs, restomods, and 1980s/90s-era vehicles as younger generations enter the hobby. Bernie and David discuss everything from Broncos and K5 Blazers to exotics, custom builds, Steve McQueen movie cars, and the emotional storytelling that continues driving collector enthusiasm. Plus, Rob Kibbe shares a Dallas Kibbe Racing Update covering Dallas's aggressive summer racing schedule, preparation for the Charlotte Summer Shootout, and the challenge of balancing racing life with getting a Porsche 944 ready for prom season. Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. As the 1960s rolled into the 1970s, something changed in Hollywood. Movies got bigger. Louder. More chaotic. And sometimes… they were a total disaster, in the best way possible. These were practical, physical, dangerous productions, massive sets, real stunts, and ensemble casts packed with stars who weren't guaranteed to make it to the end.The disaster movie wasn't born in the '70s but it peaked there. Airplanes in crisis, cities collapsing, ships overturning, skyscrapers burning. This week, my picks come from the golden age of disaster movies as we look at four of my favorite disaster movies that still hold up, and that showcase exactly why the 1970s did the disaster movies better than anyone else ever has.Airport (1970)Set over one snowbound night at a busy Chicago airport, Airport weaves together multiple storylines, an overworked airport manager, a conflicted pilot, strained relationships, and a desperate man with a dangerous plan. The tension builds gradually, before the larger stakes take hold. What makes Airport work so well is it's scale. Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, George Kennedy, Jean Seberg, Helen Hayes, the cast is stacked with faces you may not know by name, but absolutely recognize. The movie treats its ensemble seriously, letting each storyline unfold without feeling forced. It was a massive hit, one of the earliest true “blockbusters,” and set the template the entire decade would follow: big casts, grounded storytelling, and high-stakes tension. Earthquake (1974)Earthquake promised exactly what it delivered: the complete destruction of Los Angeles.Centered in Los Angeles, the film introduces a wide range of characters, before unleashing a catastrophic quake that tears the city apart. Once it hits, the movie becomes pure spectacle: collapsing buildings, massive destruction, and survival stories unfolding in real time.At the center is Charlton Heston, bringing his signature intensity to a man caught between personal turmoil and unfolding disaster. Around him is a deep ensemble cast, including familiar faces like George Kennedy, Lorne Green and Ava Gardner.Earthquake was create as an event, not just it a movie, it was a physical experience. The filmmakers pioneered the shaker mount camera system to simulate realistic movement, and introduced Sensurround, blasting sub-audible bass through giant speakers so powerful they made seats (and sometimes ceiling tiles) vibrate. The stunt work is amazing: real falls, real debris, real crashes. In the midst of all the destruction, the personal stories carry real weight, making the survival (or loss) of characters more emotional than expected. It's pure disaster chaos. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)Set aboard a luxury ocean liner on New Year's Eve, the movie quickly turns into a survival story when a rogue wave capsizes the ship. The survivors must navigate an upside-down world, climbing their way through the wreckage in hopes of escape.Led by Gene Hackman as a determined and unconventional preacher, the movie leans heavily into character dynamics. Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson, it's another stacked cast, but no one is safe simply because they're famous. Relationships evolve, tensions flare, and every character has a purpose. The writing gives each person a distinct arc, making the journey feel and survival feel important. Add in a powerful score by John Williams, and you get one of the best disaster movies ever made. The Towering Inferno (1974)Set in the world's tallest skyscraper during its grand opening, The Towering Inferno follows what happens when overlooked safety shortcuts turn into a full-scale catastrophe. The film is powered by two Hollywood titans: Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Their dynamicm, one a no-nonsense fire chief, the other the building's architect, gives the film a strong emotional core amid the chaos. The practical effects and stunt work are relentless: real fire, real smoke, real danger. You can feel the heat. It's also one of the best examples of the genre's ensemble storytelling—multiple perspectives, intersecting arcs, and constant tension. And once again, John Williams' score gives you a movie that is epic and intense. These movies hold up today because of the disaster but also the story telling. They take their time. They let you meet the characters, understand their relationships, and invest in their outcomes. So when disaster strikes, it actually matters. And there's no guarantee of survival, not even for the biggest stars.Long before the term “blockbuster” became standard (thanks to Jaws), these films were already defining what that meant. No matter which of these you choose, you're guaranteed a movie night that's anything but a disaster.Until next time — be kind, rewind. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Question from Anonymous Coward Jon Hey guys wanted to ask you a question regarding hunting, do you think I should get a 22 air rifle (small game) and a crossbow (big game) to cover my hunting needs on both areas or is there a caliber that you guys can recommend that would do both? Thanks and love the show Question from Matthew C Hello, I am a diesel technician in eastern Indiana and work in a very rural and gun friendly area. A few of us in the shop have noticed that the required experience for drivers has been lowered in the last few years and we have all noticed the “quality” of drivers has drastically dropped. We have had upset drivers that come in yelling and screaming after getting fired or not getting their way (most of them are of the non English speaking variety). A few of us have kept pistols in our toolboxes for years. The safety department and upper management tell everyone “it's against company policy”. They are all great bosses and understand what is actually happening. They then talk for 10 minutes about the high end 1911 they keep in their desk. A couple of us have purchased the North American Arms .22 magnum, folding revolvers to pocket carry. They look like a standard pocket knife clip from 5 feet away and no one notices. The single action and 5 shot capacity is less than desirable though. We were talking and arguing over what is the best gun/holster combination that could conceal perfectly and not get caught on equipment. We are all 5'9- 6′ 1″, 160lbs to 220lbs. Not skinny, not fat. Appendix carry is not ideal. We were all thinking less than $700 total setup. The weapons will get beat up and dirty on occasion. What is your thoughts on ankle holsters? We would prefer 9mm. Would combination would you guys recommend? If no decision can be made, our young parts guy is a 21 year old virgin. He is 6′ 5″ and 350lbs. We could always have him rape the driver to death. Just a back up option. We think he may be Jeremy's illegitimate offspring. P.S Thanks to this show, I figured out that my favorite hat is ALSO a Richardson 112. Fat heads for life! Question from Cooter H Nick mentioned cheap 22's on Double Tap last week. Those make rad projects if you're willing to cut up a classic. I just took a Remington 511, cut it to 16”, threaded it for a can, then mounted an old glossy Leupold and stuck it in a surplus Remington 513 stock. What other old guns would the cast bastardize make it cool again? Question from Chris W Hey guys if you had to build a dmr load out what would it be? Semi auto, or bolt? 30-06, .308, or 7mm rem mag? What optics? Noreen arms makes these big ass semi auto rifles and I kind of want one and cant decide. The budget isnt a concern and its going to be a range toy for the most part or until shit hits the fan and I need someone on overwatch. Thanks in advance. Question from Un-ominous Cowword in Your Mom Is Aaron's middle name really Farkas or is that just him slipping(pun intended) a word that sounds like fuck-ass into his social media? Thanks GUN INDUSTRY NEWS GOA: Anti-Gun Lobby Attacks Organization as Extremists for Second Amendment Advocacy Gun Owners of America (GOA) reports that the billionaire-funded gun-control lobby is labeling the organization as extremists due to its uncompromising stance on restoring Second Amendment rights nationwide. The article contrasts GOA's grassroots support with the anti-gun lobby's scare tactics and political compromises. It urges readers to join GOA to support the ongoing fight against gun control.
