This disconnect between the artist and the audience is one of the subjects that Tom uses to explore the theme of greed that was the overarching construct behind the album. So this leads me to another quote from Tom in that 2002 interview that really does just get down to the nub of the matter. He asks; “How much money do you need?” And yes, I know that Tom was a multi-millionaire, but that was off the back of his creative work and performing for people. Can you imagine for one second him accepting the new model of dynamic pricing?Check out the song here : https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=I6Hzr3h9g0kAnd you can watch the stunning live performance from the Olympic here : https://youtu.be/o8_kNGRLPHEDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In this episode of Outside the Round, host Matt Burrill sits down with Tennessee native Drew Green for a candid conversation about his journey through the country music world. From grinding out marathon sets at Tootsies on Lower Broadway to playing bigger stages and building a loyal fanbase, Drew shares how persistence, songwriting, and family support helped shape his path. The two discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted momentum just as Drew was starting to break through—and how he bounced back. Now, with the release of his long-awaited debut album, 'What You're Looking For', Drew is staking his claim in the genre. The conversation highlights his evolution as a songwriter, his upcoming Opry debut, and his desire to remain grounded while aiming high. What happens when you search for songs with the word "fall" in the title? A musical journey spanning decades, genres, and emotions that will surprise you at every turn.Matt Sidhom and Sam Abousalbi dive deep into twelve tracks united only by a single word, uncovering fascinating stories behind each song. Did you know Tom Petty's iconic "Free Fallin'" was initially rejected by producers, only to be accepted unchanged six months later? Or that Post Malone's heartbreak anthem "I Fall Apart" transforms completely when remixed for spin classes? The mix weaves through Kenny Chesney's nostalgic football tribute, Maggie Rogers' metaphorical "Falling Water," and the pure vocal harmonies of Shai's acapella "If I Ever Fall In Love." We explore the emotional weight of "Falling Slowly" from the Oscar-winning film Once, the edgy punk-infused sound of Weezer's "Falling For You," and the soaring hopefulness of Chloe and Halle's "Fall."Each song reveals something unique about how artists interpret the concept of falling – whether it's falling in love, falling apart, or simply embracing the fall season. The conversations highlight how a single word can connect vastly different musical expressions while exposing the hosts' genuine passion for musical discovery.Follow us @superawesomemix on Instagram and Threads, and check out our videos on YouTube to continue the conversation about your favorite "fall" songs!https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-fall-playlist/pl.u-XmgpfXZ0qz1. Caller Brandy from Austin, Texas, delivers a chilling story that mixes grief, music, and the unexplained. After moving from California and working exhausting overnight shifts, she tried to grab sleep during the day. But her rest was broken by phantom footsteps racing across laminate floors. Each time she called out — silence. Each time she checked, only her sleeping dog. Then, days after Tom Petty's death, her mom's phone suddenly started blasting one of his songs — no caller, no alert, no reason. The timing was uncanny, especially since Brandy admits she took Petty's death extremely hard, as though she'd lost someone she truly knew. The crew unpacks this story with a mix of empathy and fascination: how artists can shape our lives so profoundly that their passing feels personal, why music often feels like a bridge between the living and the dead, and whether this was a coincidence or a ghostly farewell. From Merle Haggard to Suzanne Somers, they tie in their own moments of pop culture grief and the paranormal echoes it can leave behind. This is a segment that hits both heart and spine — a ghost story, yes, but also a meditation on how loss lingers. Welcome to PTBN Pop's Video Jukebox Song of The Day! Every weekday will be featuring a live watch of a great and memorable music video. This week, we're all about dreams both aspirational and the one's that you experience while you're asleep. On today's episode, Andy Atherton is watching, “Runnin' Down A Dream” by Tom Petty from 1989. The specificity of the song got Tom into a little bit of trouble and the single was banned on a lot of stations who didn't reach for the deeper meaning and saw it as a direct attack on radio itself. In 2010, Tom told Mojo UK, “Radio was just a metaphor. ‘The Last DJ' was really about losing our moral compass, our moral centre. We don't care who gets hurt any more in the quest for the dollar. That was what I was trying to say.”Check out the song here : https://youtu.be/6Knw_GxXPHgDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In today's episode of Ten Year Town, Troy takes a step back from the noise of marketing hacks and algorithm tricks to talk about something deeper: the art itself. Making music can feel like pulling the lever on a slot machine: the lights flash, it feels like progress, but often it leaves you right where you started. This episode, A Field Guide for Going Slow, explores what it means to create work that lasts and why slowing down might be the key to fulfillment in a fast-paced industry. Drawing from conversations with artists like Steven Wilson Jr. and inspired by voices like Charles Bukowski and Tom Petty, Troy shares a framework for building a career rooted in authenticity rather than quick wins.If you're looking for wisdom on how to make art that sustains, beyond the algorithms, this one's for you.New Episodes every Tuesday.Find the host Troy Cartwright on Twitter, Instagram. I didn't want to start the new season in earnest while I was away as I knew I wouldn't have as much time to prep and barely any to record and edit, so I wanted to get a special episode and was trying to think of what to do to ease into the season. These two dates in 2002 completely destroy the conventional wisdom that you don't go to see a "legacy act" to hear music from their new record. Hearing this album played live in this way almost makes it the only way to think about this tour. Imagine if the Heartbreakers had put on similar performances for albums like Long After Dark, Wildflowers, and Hypnotic Eye. Even if you performed them as part of a mini-residency, hearing albums in their entirety in this way gives them a much more cohesive resonance that is lost if you cherry pick two or three singles. You can check out the entire performance here : https://youtu.be/yLl2_JIlKpsDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot dedicate this episode of The Audio Files to processing the shock and grief of Charlie Kirk's assassination through the power of music. They weave a journey from anger to resilience, curating songs that reflect raw emotion, unshakable defiance, and the hope needed to carry forward. From metal tracks that channel rage without violence, to classics like Tom Petty's “I Won't Back Down,” Tesla's “Hang Tough,” and Johnny Cash's “Man in Black,” each song becomes a statement of strength and principle. They share personal stories of concerts, mosh pits, and college experiences with intolerance, connecting them to Kirk's own legacy of dialogue over violence. Along the way, they reflect on Codex 9/11 screenings, the Streisand effect amplifying Kirk's message, and the broader cultural battle over free speech and indoctrination. The show closes with uplifting selections, Kansas, Hatebreed, opera, and more, reminding listeners that while grief is real, music can unify, inspire, and heal.

On this episode of Bringin' it Backwards, Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels sits down with Michael Fitzpatrick—better known as Fitz, frontman of the chart-topping band Fitz and the Tantrums. Fitz gets real about his long and winding road through the music industry, from years of rejection and heartbreak to risking it all—both emotionally and financially—on one more shot at his dream. He shares how a vintage organ and a single inspired rehearsal launched the band that would eventually bring us hits like “HandClap,” “The Walker,” and “Out of My League.” Fitz opens up about the creative process behind their latest album Man on the Moon, what it's like performing new songs for fans after years of making music, and why licensing and syncs were crucial for the band's rise in a changing industry. The conversation takes a candid turn into the realities of breaking through later in life, the pressures of social media on aspiring artists, and how to build a dedicated fanbase that will stick around long after the viral moment fades. There are stories about tough gigs, major risks, and a Tom Petty studio mishap you don't want to miss. Whether you're a longtime fan, an up-and-coming musician, or just need a dose of inspiration, this is a conversation packed with advice and powerful reminders about passion, perseverance, and making your own path. Stick around for Fitz's heartfelt advice to aspiring artists, and make sure to check out the full episode on your favorite podcast platform.
Today's episode is a fantastic chat I had with my friend Eric Senich, who has been on the show previously, back in October of last year. As well as being an outstanding podcaster and rock historian, Eric also spent a large part of his early career as a DJ, so I thought it would be interesting to talk to him about the nature of the industry and how and why freeform DJ's like Jim Ladd were such an important part of the culture and development of rock n roll music. We wander off into some really interesting areas in this chat and I'm really looking forward to sharing this one with you so sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with Eric Senich!Check out Eric's website here, where you can find links to all the episodes of his brilliant podcast, Booked on Rock : https://www.bookedonrock.comNOTE: There is some profanity during my conversation with Eric. The song and video at the end of this episode are used by very kind permission by former guest Tommy Edwin. That's right, folks. This is the second-to-last episode of "John Updike's Ghost," which will end with Episode 100. But not to worry! We'll be launching a new podcast not long afterward, with a new name and a little bit of a new focus. In the meantime, though, we've got a cracker-jack episode for you this week, with a bunch of books we really like. Here's the deal: - "Flashlight" by Susan Choi, which is one of those books you tell other people about. The history of Korea-Japan-China conflict is at its heart. - "The Wall," by Marlen Haushofer (translated by Shaun Whiteside), which is a classic of post-apocalyptic Feminist literature, and completely delivers, with a story of self-sufficiency that speaks to the essence of humanity's relationship with nature. - "A Month in the Country," by J.L. Carr, which a classic of pastoral literature, a treatise on hard work well done and the value of rural community. - "Fonseca," by Jessica Francis Kane, which is the made-up story of author Penelope Fitzgerald's apocryphal trip to Mexico (look up who Penelope is; she's dope). - "Heartbreaker," by Mike Campbell and Ari Surdoval, which is among the best musician memoirs ever produced, the story of the creation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but so much more than that.

Pete Droge is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter based in Seattle, WA who rocketed to early stardom on the strength of his 1994 debut Necktie Second. The Los Angeles Times compared his songwriting to Bob Dylan and Neil Young while also earning similar praise from Rolling Stone and Boston Globe among many others, and within a year he was on the road supporting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He has since released a series of well-received solo albums, composed a variety of works for film and television, and even appeared in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. Sixteen years ago, Pete Droge went looking for his birth mother; instead, he found her obituary. But rather than marking the end of the story, the discovery ultimately led him to reconnect with his surviving relatives and started a journey that would forever change his life and career. He explores it all with poetic grace on Fade Away Blue, a rich, revelatory sonic memoir that faces down doubt and despair with love, resilience, and commitment at every turn. The songs are bittersweet, balancing longing and gratitude in equal measure, and the arrangements are warm and inviting to match, with Droge's tender, comforting lyrics and easygoing, understated delivery. Well, we've covered all the songs on Echo now, so that can only mean one thing! That's right. It's time for John Paulsen to join me again to wrap up the twelfth album and dig into the vinyl age, whether fifteen songs is too many, and of course, a whole lot of back and forth about the album!
