Indie troubadour and Rolling Stone darling Brian Dunne gets real about his work as a songwriter who take the craft seriously. PART ONE: Paul and Scott talk about the Earth, Wind & Fire documentary, musical gibberish, Michael Jackson's lyrical theft, Scott's Cameroonian music phase, and perhaps the most irritating song mashup of all time. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Brian DunneABOUT BRYAN DUNNE Brian Dunne is a New York–based singer-songwriter whose sharp storytelling, dark humor, and blue-collar perspective have earned him a devoted following in the Americana and indie-rock worlds. A longtime fixture on the East Coast club circuit, Dunne built his career the old-fashioned way—by writing songs, touring relentlessly, and cultivating a fiercely independent DIY approach. Over the course of multiple solo albums, including Selling Things in 2020, Loser on the Ropes in 2023, and Clams Casino in 2025, he has developed a reputation for pairing deeply human observations with memorable, hook-filled songs that draw from the traditions of artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Billy Joel while maintaining a distinctly modern voice. Dunne's profile expanded internationally when his 2021 single “New Tattoo” became an unexpected hit in the Netherlands, and in 2022 he co-founded the acclaimed folk-rock collective Fantastic Cat alongside fellow songwriters Anthony D'Amato, Don DiLego, and Mike Montali. Dunne continues to balance his solo career with Fantastic Cat, earning praise for songs that explore failure, resilience, class, ambition, and the everyday struggles of modern life with equal parts wit, empathy, and heart. His work has attracted praise from Rolling Stone, where writer Joseph Hudak championed his 2025 album Clams Casino and later singled it out as his favorite album of the year. It has been described as if novelist Sam Lipsyte wrote the lyrics for Billy Joel's Glass Houses, or if the Jason Isbell of Southeastern cut his teeth in scuzzy NYC rock clubs. We are proud to welcome Rock PR veteran Sharon Chevin who has been in the music business for more than 4 decades. What began as a deep love for rock music became a sustaining career which has taken her around the world and helped her forge friendships with some of the biggest artists on the planet. These days, Sharon manages prog rock legends Yes (and she wants me to remind everyone that Aurora is out now) and Steve Hackett (she teases his new collaboration with Marillion's Steve Rothery) but has worked with and hung around some of the biggest stars of all time. Her stories are amazing and funny as she shares how Alice Cooper will work a 14 hour day as long as you give him a couple of hours to shop. Hear how she had to convince hotel staff in Germany that she needed corn flakes for Tom Petty and George Harrison at 1 AM. She talks going to see a new band at Hammersmith called U2 with Pete Townshend and Bruce Springsteen. Mostly, Sharon lets us know that most of the top talent are marvelous people who are great to work with. But not all of them are and she drops a couple of names onto the jerk list. But mostly we hear about how Chris Squire invited her to stay with his family after an earthquake or how John Lord would always drop by her local pub for a glass of wine when he was in town. She admits she fell in love with Billy Idol the moment she met him and how Bryan Adams talked her out of getting Bonnie Raitt's picture taken with Madonna. We're just glad Sharon is still doing PR for bands we love and that she's still sharing her stories of her rock n roll odyssey. On this episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into the incredible story behind Lenny Kravitz's most important guitar. Facing jail time and desperate for cash, a man pulled into a parking lot with a car full of vintage guitars. What happened next changed Kravitz's collection forever. Among the instruments was a legendary 1953 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop conversion that became his number-one studio guitar and has appeared on every album since Are You Gonna Go My Way. Lenny also reveals how Tom Petty and Mike Campbell taught him the art of vintage guitar hunting during his early touring days, helping shape his passion for classic instruments. From rare Fender Telecasters and Stratocasters to one of the most iconic Les Pauls in modern rock, this is a fascinating story every guitar player and rock fan needs to hear. What would YOU have bought from that car full of vintage guitars? #LennyKravitz #LesPaul #VintageGuitars #TalkingGuitars

I'm thinking of this as part of a new occasional series that I can return to called “Origins” and will be about the songwriters and/or musicians that have shaped my musical tastes. Future episodes will definitely include people like Ray Davies of The Kinks, Edward Van Halen, Justin Currie of Del Amitri, Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, Mark Knopfler, Steve Earle, and Paul McCartney, as names that spring immediately to mind. To be honest, I can easily see Brian May also getting his own episode at some point! I don't have any sort of plan for how frequently these episodes will drop, I'll just sit down to write them when opportunity and desire overlap at the right time.To kick off the "Origins" series, I need to talk about the guy who stands at the top of the musical mountain for me; Freddie Mercury. David Senra: Read the notes at at podcastnotes.org. Don't forget to subscribe for free to our newsletter, the top 10 ideas of the week, every Monday --------- Rick Rubin grew up on Long Island obsessed with music — arena rock at 13, punk by high school, then hip-hop when it was still a street movement you could only hear at one club in New York City. The records coming out didn't sound like the club. They were made by professionals who didn't go to the club. So at 18, while a freshman at NYU, he made one himself — "It's Yours" with T La Rock. It sold 100,000 copies in 18 months. He put his dorm room address on the sleeve. This launched Def Jam Recordings. LL Cool J's first record came next. The Beastie Boys after that. His credit on those records didn't say "produced by." It said "reduced by" — a theological statement as much as a job title. His method has never changed: strip everything down until what remains has no place to hide, then protect whatever magic appears. He's applied it to Jay-Z, Johnny Cash, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem, The Strokes, Metallica, Kanye West, Tom Petty, and many other top artists. He describes himself as a lazy workaholic. The Zen exterior is real. So is the guy who spent the first 25 years of his career in a dark room 16 hours a day, seven days a week, waiting for a miracle to show up. Hello to you listening in Pristina, Kosovo! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The things we take for granted, like a song we've heard over and over. I wondered: what's the story behind “I Won't Back Down” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? "I Won't Back Down" was born from sheer defiance after a targeted act of arson in May 1987 burned Tom Petty's Los Angeles home to the ground. Petty refused to move away. Instead, he rebuilt on the same plot of land and channeled his trauma into a song of defiance. The message of resilience in the face of adversity became a universal mantra for overcoming any struggle. Maybe like me you've acted against your own better wisdom, saying 'yes' instead of 'no', going along to get along, or something else. You know what I'm talking about. Maybe like me you finally figured out a better way to live. We've got just one life. In a world that keeps pushing us around we stand our ground, we won't back down! Story Prompt: When have you backed down because someone or something was pushing you around? No more. You know how to stand your ground! Write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Grammy-winning songwriter and artist Sebastian Kole (aka Pynk Beard) joins Joel Blackstock on the Discover Heal Grow podcast to unpack the intersections of Southern heritage, creative deconstruction, and finding authentic human connection in a digital world. From the pews of his parents' church in Birmingham, Alabama, to the national stage, Pynk Beard's journey is a masterclass in artistic evolution. In this episode, Sebastian and Joel dive deep into the cultural cross-pollination of country, hip-hop, and gospel — viewing them all as deeply connected "working man's music." Sebastian explains how his album Sugar and Salt serves as a deconstruction of what it means to be a Black man in Alabama, and why dying his beard pink became his ultimate creative calling card and a visual rebellion against industry elitism. Beyond the music, the conversation shifts into profound psychological territory. They explore Sebastian's early experiences with therapy for anger management, the therapeutic value of art, and Taproot Therapy Collective's innovative neurological approaches to healing (including EMDR, brainspotting, and subcortical brain modulation). (Plus, you won't want to miss Sebastian's unusual but brilliant foil-free baked potato recipe at the end of the episode!) Let's talk about the lyrics to this one first. Tom goes on to say “You don't have a lot of room to write a story in a song. So you have to be economical with your lines.” and we've remarked on that on so many occasions with Tom's story songs - he usually gives us brief flashes of narrative before either zooming out, changing the POV or switching to a characters thoughts rather than their actions. This one is a pretty tight, compact three act play though and Tom's economy works really well.Song : https://youtu.be/OGWiNlHXiYQADDITIONAL LINKSJudge Timbers' tutorial: https://youtu.be/PwACALHy878Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Follow: https://linktr.ee/tompettyprojectListen: https://pod.link/1580769475All music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. What happens when you mix the traditional storytelling of classic country with the raw, uncompromising distortion of 90s alternative rock? You get the spellbinding sound of Melbourne singer-songwriter Katie Bates. Fresh off the release of her brilliant new single "Tunnel Vision," Katie joins Jamie on the show for an intimate, deep-dive exploration of her musical DNA, the fierce grit of the Australian music scene, and what it truly means to defend your artistic identity in a fast-moving digital age. In this episode, we go far beyond the standard press junket to break down the mechanics of Katie's unique sonic friction. Raised on a steady diet of family vinyl, Katie opens up about how a childhood obsession with The Wizard of Oz unexpectedly handed her a guitar at just six years old, setting her on a path to cut her teeth in local Melbourne bars and live music clubs long before most kids her age had even finished school. Jamie and Katie dive headfirst into the fascinating philosophy behind her records, discussing why she intentionally pairs clear, soaring country vocals with the snarling, heavy production elements of grunge titans like Nirvana and PJ Harvey. They tackle the psychology of dynamic contrasts in songwriting, the unique perspective gained from stepping out of the spotlight to work as a live sidewoman for other prominent acts, and her unfiltered thoughts on the frustration of navigating today's single-driven streaming ecosystem when your heart belongs to the timeless architecture of a full-length album. Turn it up, lean in, and join us for a masterclass in independent artistry.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Interscope-Capitol has released a limited-edition Definitive Sound Series One Step version of this landmark album. Tom “Grover” Biery, who oversaw the project, tells of its unusual sourcing, which involves the 1972 master of Pet Sounds that was released as part of a double LP with the then-new Beach Boys album Carl and the Passions “So Tough.” Why was that 1972 Pet Sounds so revered, and how did it come to be used here instead of the original 1966 mono master? How does this DSS version differ from the mono/stereo Pet Sounds that Universal's Vinylphyle series just released? Do people buying these new Pet Sounds versions already own multiple copies? (Raises hand...) Biery also produced One-Steps from Dr. Dre, Beck, R.E.M. (as previously discussed on Caropop), Tom Petty, Green Day and Prince and the Revolution, and he explains why the quality justifies the price.
We've talked a few times this season about the fact that the album wasn't finished when Tom played the songs for Paul Zollo. In the book, he tells Paul, “I still haven't figured out where to put it in the sequence. Right now I have it at the end, but I don't think it's the perfect ending.” Earlier, he says “That was written in the middle of all the other things” and I wonder if he hadn't written The Golden Rose at this point, because that's the obvious album closer. Had he not written that song, I do actually think This Old Town would be a good way to go out.Song : https://youtu.be/psD0J-C11u8ADDITIONAL LINKSJudge Timbers' tutorial: https://youtu.be/hgWAwudaj-ADon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Follow: https://linktr.ee/tompettyprojectListen: https://pod.link/1580769475All music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In this episode, Charles sits down with Mike Bernard, a Boston-area author, screenwriter, and playwright who came to writing later in life and hasn't slowed down since. Mike has published eight novels, written a stage musical, and optioned multiple screenplays through prestigious competitions including the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Page International Screenwriting Awards, ScreenCraft, and the Nantucket Film Festival. The conversation weaves together music, memory, friendship, and the creative life — all anchored in the gritty, soulful sounds of the 1970s and early '80s. Mike's live music journey begins with a memorable — if reluctant — first show: escorting his grandmother to see Liberace at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. His real musical awakening came when he saw the J. Geils Band at the old Boston Garden as a teenager, an experience he still counts among his best. The blues-driven energy of "House Party" and "Musta Got Lost" made a lifelong impression, and he draws a sharp distinction between that era of J. Geils and the MTV-era band that followed. Other standout shows include Elvis Costello at the Cape Cod Coliseum — where the opening silhouettes under blue light during "Watching the Detectives" hit him like a gut punch — and an extraordinary 1990 benefit concert at Worcester's Clark University featuring Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Jimmy Buffett all on the same bill. And for pure comedic gold, Mike recounts the moment a Little River Band guitar pick landed — and stuck — to his bare thigh at the Melody Tent, with zero competition from the crowd for the souvenir. Charles and Mike then discuss Mike's book Concert Dates; a fictional story told in interview form — inspired by Daisy Jones & The Six — that follows six friends who meet at a concert at age 15 and are reunited decades later through a video diary. The backdrop is the Cape Cod Coliseum, a converted hockey rink that hosted an extraordinary run of classic rock shows from 1972 to 1983, including Van Halen, The Clash, Talking Heads, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and J. Geils (twelve times). Mike also shares the remarkable story of connecting with photographer Rudy Childs — a previous Seeing Them Live guest — through a Facebook group dedicated to the Coliseum, only to discover that Rudy's candid parking lot photos included a picture of Mike and his own friends from a Clash show. Listeners who enjoy music, nostalgia, and deeply human storytelling will find Concert Dates — and Mike's wider catalog, including Crossing the Sagamore — well worth picking up on Amazon. BANDS: Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Eagles (Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit), Elvis Costello, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frankie Avalon, Huey Lewis and the News, J. Geils Band, Jackson Browne, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Buffett, Liberace, Little River Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton, R.E.M., Ray Charles, Seals and Crofts, Sly & the Family Stone, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Four Tops, Tom Petty, Van Halen. This week on America's Podcast, we dive headfirst into the sun-soaked, slightly shady, totally legendary world of California as we review one of the greatest bands and albums of all time—Eagles and their iconic Hotel California. Yeah, yeah… we know there's always that guy who says he doesn't like them, but we're putting it all on the table. No spoilers—just vibes, opinions, and probably a few “wait… this song rules” moments. We've got Free Form family members Travis Perrotta and Andy Rodriguez joining us, so you know things are gonna get interesting. We'll light up some “colitas,” try to stab it with our steely knives (results may vary), and maybe take a ride down Life in the Fast Lane… all without spoiling the verdict.
The Rizzuto Show accidentally turns into a full-blown 90s alternative rock therapy session this episode — and honestly, we're not qualified for that kind of emotional labor. Jimmy Griffin joins the crew ahead of Hard Promises taking over The Pageant, and things immediately derail into a passionate debate over which songs got CRANKED in your Geo Metro and which songs made you consider driving directly into the nearest retaining wall. Totally normal behavior for a daily comedy show. The gang breaks down the magic of The Pageant in St. Louis, why certain venues just hit different, and how every local musician basically treats that stage like sacred ground. Jimmy, Moon, and the crew talk touring memories, legendary staff, and why The Pageant remains one of the best venues in the country. Meanwhile, Rafe contributes important scientific analysis like “this song belongs in the organic peanut butter aisle at Schnucks.”Then comes the glorious avalanche of 90s nostalgia. Bush. Silverchair. Local H. Soul Asylum. Fastball. Collective Soul. Gin Blossoms. Primitive Radio Gods. The Wallflowers. Deep Blue Something. Dishwalla. Basically every song that ever played while your parents fought in the front seat of a Dodge Neon. The crew debates which songs were instant “turn-it-up” classics and which ones deserved immediate radio execution. Lern reveals her absolute hatred for “Runaway Train,” Moon passionately defends Silverchair with the energy of a man protecting sacred scripture, and Jimmy Griffin admits he thought Silverchair was just “baby Nirvana.” Somewhere during all this, Rizz realizes half these bands were apparently “for the girls,” which honestly explains a lot.Jimmy also talks about performing Tom Petty songs with Hard Promises, including why Petty's catalog is basically impossible to screw up because the songs are deceptively simple and annoyingly perfect. The crew gets into favorite deep cuts, beginner guitar memories, and the undeniable brilliance of “Last Dance with Mary Jane.” Jimmy then performs an acoustic version live in studio that immediately makes everyone forget they spent the previous hour roasting Primitive Radio Gods. But the true MVP moment of this entire episode? Jimmy's AutoZone story. A random guy confidently tells him he looks like “Earl Smith” — apparently the legendary frontman of Aerosmith now has the name of a retired high school baseball coach from Festus. Congratulations to the world on accidentally creating the greatest fake musician name in history. This episode has everything:90s alt-rock chaosTom Petty appreciationaggressive music opinionsweirdly emotional radio nostalgiaGeo Metro memoriesgrocery store soundtrack analysisand a new tribute band idea called EARL SMITHJust another completely reasonable daily comedy experience from The Rizzuto Show. Because if we're not yelling about Fastball in 2026, what are we even doing anymore? And yes… somebody definitely threatened to drive off a bridge because of Primitive Radio Gods.A completely stable and emotionally healthy daily comedy show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Specifics create dynamics. I love this idea.I watched Ethan Hawke talking about this in regards to acting and pretty much immediately thought, “The same applies to lyrics!” and figured that, as I have a podcast, I should figure out some thoughts on the topic! So what I want to do is go through a few examples again of times that this type of specificity crops up in Tom's lyrics where perhaps it isn't even needed, but improves the song so much.Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcasting Network: https://bonelesspodcasting.comAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Having already penned much-heralded books on both John Prine and Jason Molina, author Erin Osman is now tackling the wide genre of heartland rock — which she defines more by a spiritual and ideological geography, rather than a literal one. And while Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellancamp round out the Mount Rushmore of sorts for this soundtrack of working class 80's middle-America, Osmon casts a needed spotlight on the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Hornsby within the pages of 'Won't Back Down,' available now wherever you get literature. On this week's show, Osman expands upon the relationship between art and province, and why the subject matter of 'Won't Back Down' stretches across generations. Plus, details on her current role on the editorial staff of the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville, and how her two decades as a music journalist have led her there. Ebony Joseph concludes her three-part series on the global rise of anti-LGBTQ laws with a report from activists in Nigeria and Kenya confronting criminalization, censorship, and severe funding cuts. Organizers describe how anti-LGBTQ legislation affects housing, employment, healthcare, and online safety, while warning that many so-called “family protection” bills across Africa are linked to broader international networks of authoritarian politics and religious conservatism. Despite mounting political hostility, grassroots groups continue building coalitions, supporting vulnerable LGBTQ people, and fighting for dignity, equality, and belonging. In this week's Newswrap, a record-breaking boycott rocks the Eurovision Song Contest as protests over Israel's participation intensify amid the war in Gaza, while a new GLAAD report warns that major social media platforms are becoming increasingly unsafe for LGBTQ users. Additional stories include Japan's growing legal recognition of non-binary people, the delayed opening of a landmark African LGBTQ art exhibition in Washington, D.C., and the European Commission's decision not to pursue an EU-wide conversion therapy ban despite strong public support. In a Rainbow Rewind, poet Adrienne Rich reflects on responsibility to both past and future generations in a powerful archival excerpt. The fastest way to time-travel is to press play on a song you haven't heard in years, then realize you still know every word. We pull up the Billboard Hot 100 from May 23, 1981 and take it for a spin, bouncing between classic rock, radio pop, and the kind of tracks that were simply unavoidable if you lived anywhere near a car stereo or a skating rink.Along the way, we dig into what's actually happening inside these hits: Billy Squier's “The Stroke” as a music business story, Santana's “Winning” as a case of “this does not sound like Santana,” and the emotional weight of George Harrison's “All Those Years Ago,” made even heavier by the Beatles connections around it. We also hit Tom Petty's “The Waiting,” Hall and Oates' “You Make My Dreams,” and the early MTV effect that turned songs into permanent memories, for better or worse. Then we get personal: a Jefferson Starship chorus becomes a full-on dinner-table bit, Rick Springfield's “Jessie's Girl” comes with a wild songwriting backstory, and REO Speedwagon's “Take It On The Run” gets a deep breakdown of why a vocal and a guitar solo can feel like one continuous emotional punch. We close out the chart with the weird brilliance of Stars on 45 and the long reign of Kim Carnes' “Bette Davis Eyes,” then jump to a modern live-music recap featuring Kevin Kinney, Peter Buck, and a surprise Mike Mills appearance, plus a quick Ramones spotlight and a final Van Halen 5150 tangent. If you love 1980s music, classic rock storytelling, and honest takes on music history, subscribe, and share this with a friend who lived through it.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. “There's rain on the road And the faithful have gone. In a crowd all alone, Walking 'round in a song”. It's a great little snapshot or vignette, as Tom so often gives us, of perhaps a wedding or some other celebration at a small roadside church. That feeling of being alone in a crowd is beautifully phrased by changing the order of the words; rather than All alone in a crowd, “in a crowd all alone” feels more poetic and more deliberately focusing on the alone part rather than the crowd part. And, we have to tip our hat to Dana Petty of course here! Tom tells Paul Zollo “Dana actually helped me with two lines in that song. I was kind of stuck. It's not something I would ordinarily do, but I said, “Hey, what would you put here? What would you say?” he then says “In a crowd all alone/Walking round in a song. That was hers”.Song : https://youtu.be/DZa8wc2uoowADDITIONAL LINKSJudge Timbers' tutorial: https://youtu.be/2ld4U8pvr3A Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcasting Network: https://bonelesspodcasting.comAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. What happens when you rescue a forgotten studio that once shaped American music history - and bring it roaring back to life? This week, I sat down with Teresa Knox, the powerhouse entrepreneur and preservationist behind the rebirth of The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma - the legendary home of Leon Russell, the early Shelter Records family, and the roots of what became known as the Tulsa Sound. Teresa shares the entire arc of this wild journey: from collecting Leon Russell Slurpee cups as an 8-year-old kid, to buying the abandoned church sight unseen, to rebuilding it from the ground up and restoring it as a world-class studio, museum, archive, and engineering school. We talk about the stunning history embedded in the building - the 1915 hand-built sanctuary, the 1972 Leon-era renovations, and what it really takes to preserve a place where so many iconic recordings were born.We dig deep into the music: Leon's time in the Wrecking Crew, his explosion after Mad Dogs & Englishmen, recording with George Harrison at the Concert for Bangladesh, and his early influence on players like Elton John and Glen Campbell. Teresa shares stories from the Shelter Records years - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers arriving as Mudcrutch, J.J. Cale, The Gap Band, Phoebe Snow, Willis Alan Ramsey, Freddie King, and even Bob Marley & The Wailers turning the place into a Jamaican party. She walks us through the official Church Studio playlist, the discovery of original artifacts inside the walls, and why preserving the stories of these musicians matters just as much as preserving the building itself. Finally, we talk about the reconstruction: shoring up a collapsing foundation, solving electrical noise and RF issues, preserving historic architecture while building a modern studio, restoring a Neve 8068, installing two EMT 140 plates, and designing a hybrid analog/digital workflow. Teresa also explains how The Church Studio now trains new engineers through its hands-on vocational school, hosts sessions with top artists, runs a nonprofit to support musicians, and continues the legacy of Leon and the Tulsa Sound through events like CarniFest. Her passion for preservation, community, and world-class sound makes this one of the most inspiring studio stories I've ever heard.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ The next program starts May 11, 2026 https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK30 to get 1 month free of NI 360!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://pickrmusic.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6BLaSUX1juRYH6jHHTfa6k?si=nZtNPzHDSXi0bVQnpSU43AIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/557
Springtime energy can entice us to take on new projects and quickly fill our social calendars. We can easily get swept away with the fullness of the season and forget to focus our energy with intention. This May our growth is supported by two full moons. The Flower Moon, which occurred on 5/1, guides us toward expansion. The Blue Moon, happening on 5/31, calls us to refine our vision and decide what we want to carry into the next cycle. Rather than trying to do it all this spring, consider pouring your energy toward one thing that's calling for your attention. With a little focus, you may grow something truly beautiful this season! In this episode of My Rock Moment, I'm joined by legendary album cover artist Larry Vigon, whose work has helped define the visual identity of some of the most iconic albums in rock history. With more than 200 album covers to his name, Larry has worked with Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Chicago and Counting Crows. He's also in the Album Cover Hall of Fame. We dive deep into Larry's connection to Fleetwood Mac and explore the making of the Rumours cover and the bold creative shift that came with Tusk. Larry also opens up about designing early work for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the distinct identity behind 'August and Everything After,' and how he approached creating visuals that could stand the test of time. Larry shares stories from attending both days of the T.A.M.I. Show in 1964 and near collaborations with Madonna and Tori Amos. We also talk about his latest exhibition, Aquean, on view at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum through July 26th. This multimedia exhibition explores the ocean as a metaphor for time, change, and the balance between permanence and loss along the California coast. This is a fascinating conversation about creativity, collaboration, and being behind the scenes of some of the most important moments in music history. Inside "Idling High" with Artist Jake Cassman Jake Cassman refuses to make false choices. He crafts sharp, thought-provoking lyrics rooted in the Americana tradition without losing the drive and edge of indie rock. Onstage, he moves effortlessly between dark, gut-busting humor and disarming vulnerability. Shaped both by California dreams and east coast grit, Cassman arrives with his remarkable debut solo album Idling High—a record that channels “a sound that feels both urgent and timeless, recalling Tom Petty, Counting Crows, and Jason Isbell” (Rock The Pigeon).Tags:podcast for creatives, creative podcast, podcast creator interviews, professional podcast, creative podcasts, podcast host interviews, creative podcast ideas,ArtistComedianMusicMusicianLinks:https://www.jakecassman.com/musicSupport PEG by checking out our Sponsors:Download and use Newsly for free now from www.newsly.me or from the link in the description, and use promo code “GHOST” and receive a 1-month free premium subscription. The best tool for getting podcast guests:https://podmatch.com/signup/phantomelectricghostSubscribe to our Instagram for exclusive content:https://www.instagram.com/expansive_sound_experiments/Subscribe to our YouTube https://youtube.com/@phantomelectricghost?si=rEyT56WQvDsAoRprRSShttps://anchor.fm/s/3b31908/podcast/rssSubstackhttps://substack.com/@phantomelectricghost?utm_source=edit-profile-page

Hi, everyone, John Moe here. “Can I read you what Sunny just posted on Facebook?” asked my wife, Jill. I figured it was something about Tom Petty or her dogs but it was, in fact, a very funny and skillful micro-essay on why she listens to Depresh Mode and why, after years of listening, she became a member. Her argument was one that I would never dare make but enjoyed: if you're not paying, it's theft. I passed her post around to Max Fun folks and they got excited. When creative people get excited, they BUILD stuff. Actor Helen Hong, co-host of Max Fun's Go Fact Yourself, performed a dramatic reading of Sunny's words in a beautiful/hilarious video by Max Fun's Laura Swisher. So in this mini-sode, we have the audio of Helen's reading and an interview with new celebrity Sunny Kase. Please visit maximumfun.org/join to become a member of Depresh Mode and Maximum Fun or just swing by maximumfun.org/joindepresh for a $5/month express lane. And please enjoy the video of Helen's performance! Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's MaxFunDrive! Still want to get in on the action? Three years. That's how long Learn has been putting up with this circus—and somehow, she's still here. In this episode of The Rizzuto Show comedy podcast, we actually take a moment (a brief, uncomfortable moment) to acknowledge the milestone with some genuine appreciation, questionable sincerity, and just enough emotional whiplash to make everyone regret being vulnerable.Of course, because this is a daily comedy show and not a therapy session, things immediately go off the rails.Enter Tim Virgin's “Back That Track Up,” a game that sounds simple—until your brain starts melting trying to identify songs played backwards. What follows is a rollercoaster of confidence, chaos, and increasingly desperate guesses as the crew battles through 16 tracks ranging from absolute classics to “wait… I know this… why don't I know this?”There are clutch moments. There are lifeline saves. There are wildly confident wrong answers. And then there's that one song—you know, the one that's so obvious it physically hurts when it gets missed. Yeah… that happens.Along the way, we detour into stories about Tom Petty, Whitney Houston, bizarre celebrity moments, and the kind of off-topic tangents that make this funny podcast feel less like a show and more like hanging out with your most chaotic group chat.By the end, someone manages an impressive 13 out of 16—but not without controversy, lifeline drama, and at least one identity crisis over Rick Astley's name.If you're here for a comedy podcast that mixes nostalgia, music, sarcasm, and just enough dysfunction to keep things interesting, congratulations—you've found your people.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
