Mark Malkoff has a new book entitled Love, Johnny Carson: One Obsessive Fan's Journey To Find The Genius Behind The Legend. Johnny Carson is so larger than life now it's important to sometimes take a step back and appreciate his accomplishment. Unlike today, when there are 8,000 channels, and three network late night talk shows. Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show when there were around ten channels total and one, count 'em, one late night talk show, which he hosted for 30 years. He interviewed over 25,000 guests, navigated America's cultural conversation from President Kennedy through President Clinton. Mark's book covers the debuts of then-unknown comedians who are now household names. He talks about Johnny's feuds, and he had some. There were periods of time when William Shatner and Orson Welles were banned from the show. But Mark's book is very affectionate. It's honest without being exploitive. It dishes a lot of dirt but it's never bitchy, I can't recommend it enough. Mark Malkoff. Right here. In the human flesh.  The second interview is with two dudes who have written extensively about two films from a very special time in American cinema-going. Back in the 70's, you see, before cable and VHS tapes and streaming, if you wanted to see a movie, you had to wait and catch it on television. And if you wanted to see it uncut, you had to find it playing in a movie theater. And that's it. Because of this, more people went to more movies more often. And, since this was before multiplexes, movie theaters were more random. You didn't have 16 screens in one building. You had sixteen different movie theaters scattered around town.  John Gaspar has written a book about a very strange event at one such theater in one of my favorite cities in the goddamn world, and yours too, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The book is called Held Over: Harold And Maude At The Westgate Theater and it tells the story of Hal Ashby's 1971 black comedy Harold and Maude, that starred Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, that ran for two years at the Westgate in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. The film ran for so long, the neighbors protested, demanding a new movie! It's a terrific book about what movie going in America used to be like, before the multiplexes took over. John and I are joined by Ari Kahan, who is the archivist of The Swan Archives, which is I can best describe as a labyrinthine database covering all things pertaining to 1974's Brian DePalma cult classic, Phantom Of The Paradise. The killing of Alex Pretti and the fact that it was recorded on video that plainly contradicted the Trump administration's initial narrative made that clear. Mark Carney, the prime minister of Canada, also drove home that point when he declared at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the world was in the midst of a “rupture.”What do people think of America now in Europe? In China? And if American hegemony is coming to an end, what comes after that?Adam Tooze is a historian at Columbia University and a chronicler of crises. Protests and skirmishes between Minnesota residents and federal agents are still ongoing after the second shooting of a US citizen in Minneapolis this month. Thirty-seven year old ICU nurse Alex Pretti was killed by Border Patrol agents while filming immigration operations in the city. Following a weekend of inflammatory comments by DHS secretary Kristy Noem and other members of the Trump administration, the president has looked to turn the temperature down. He deployed ‘Border Czar' Tom Homan to take command of operations in Minneapolis. The experienced immigration official acknowledged that “certain improvements could and should be made” to immigration enforcement in the area. But Homan insisted that more cooperation from state and local officials would be necessary before a reduction in federal presence.  It remains to be seen whether the tonal shift or any changes in operations will be effective in the Twin Cities region. The situation has raised concerns among Congress that legislative action may be necessary. Senate Democrats worked toward a deal with the White House to avoid a government shutdown over DHS funding. While some initial framework has been drawn up, the two sides will continue negotiating new guardrails for ICE and Border Patrol. Sometimes a story comes along that challenges my perspectives at a core level. As a father, I took great responsibility in instilling self-worth into my children. And, I still had kids who struggled with their self-worth. I feel our culture as a whole is more insecure than ever. My guest in this episode is Peter Mutabazi, and he found his self-worth after a childhood that gave him zero access to any concept of it. Peter was born out in the boonies of Uganda in what can hardly be described as a home. He was routinely beaten by his father and treated like a stray dog. Or worse. Treated like trash. He ran away at age 10 for fear his father would finally kill him. He made it to the city of Kampala where he lived on the streets and slept in the sewers. Literally. It was so disgusting in the sewers nobody would venture there, which meant it was the only place he could find safety. He lived as a street kid where he only ate every few days, he never slept in a bed, rode in a car, or had shoes. But at age 15, someone befriended him and gave him a chance. Today he lives in America where he fosters and adopts children and runs an organization he founded called, Nowiamknownfoundation.org where his goal is to encourage and affirm marginalized and abandoned children. He wrote a book titled, Now I Am Known:  How a Street Kid Turned Foster Dad Found Acceptance and True Worth. My focus was on how Peter could come from such dramatic abuse, abject poverty, and zero exposure to any nurturing or support, and not only find his self-worth, but then serve others in finding their self-worth.
