In this episode of Brake Check, we're getting into what's really going on in freight right now — and yeah, things are finally getting interesting again. Charles Gracey sits down with JP Hampstead from FreightWaves to break down why the truckload market is suddenly way more volatile than what we've seen the past couple years. Winter storms, rising tender rejections, tightening capacity, spot rates heating up — we explain what all of that actually means without the fluff. If you've been wondering whether this market shift is real or just another fake-out, this conversation puts it into plain English. We also dig into earnings and outlooks from major carriers like Old Dominion, Heartland, and CFI, talk inventory levels, tariffs, and why some shippers are trying (and failing) to lock in last year's rates. The big question: is this finally a sustainable rebound, or are we setting up for another crash? Then we shift to the people side of trucking with Kevin Hall, CEO of CDLLife. We talk driver recruiting, why drivers are being way pickier right now, what a “quality driver” actually means, and why respect matters more than most job ads want to admit. If you recruit drivers, manage drivers, or are a driver, this part hits home. And to wrap it up, Malcolm Harris jumps in for some real talk on the current freight temperature, broker vs carrier perspectives, and why relationship-based freight might finally be making a comeback. Markets, money, drivers, relationships — it's all in here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In today's episode, we cover a massive legal victory for truck drivers as a California jury awards over $50 million in a whistleblower lawsuit against food giant Sysco. The verdict addresses allegations of retaliation against workers who reported unsafe conditions and falsified records, sending a strong message about corporate accountability. We also look at new regulatory updates where the FMCSA has established specific geographic "safe zones" for drivers struggling with English proficiency. These exceptions near the border will prevent drivers from being placed out of service for language violations, though citations will still be issued. Finally, we report on the sentencing of a truck driver who will serve additional prison time for a revenge-fueled arson spree targeting Swift Transportation trailers. The 67-year-old was convicted of setting fires across multiple states and will serve consecutive sentences for his crimes. Today we were delighted to welcome Jim Murchie, Co-Founder, Co-Portfolio Manager, and CEO of Energy Income Partners (EIP). Prior to co-founding EIP, Jim's career in power and electricity included establishing Lawhill Capital, serving as a Managing Director at Tiger Management focused primarily on energy, commodities, and related equities, and working as a Principal at Sanford C. Bernstein, where he was a top-ranked energy analyst. He began his career at British Petroleum and holds an MA in Energy Planning from Harvard University. We were thrilled to connect with Jim for an insightful discussion on the power landscape. We covered a lot of ground in our conversation, starting with how EIP navigates macro and market volatility by focusing on regulated monopolies and pipelines with stable, cost-plus earnings, Jim's career path and research philosophy, and how EIP's focus on utilities and pipelines emerged from investor demand for real assets and dividends. Jim provides a history lesson on power markets and how deregulated wholesale markets evolved, Enron-era manipulation, and the early-2000s gas plant buildout that ultimately led to overcapacity and merchant distress. We dig into the three-bucket framework for customer bills (generation, transmission, and distribution/other) and why the public debate often overemphasizes generation, while the biggest driver of residential bill increases has been distribution/other costs (bucket three). Jim explains that the third bucket on power bills often acts as a catch-all for costs that are neither generation nor transmission, even when they aren't distribution in the literal last-mile sense, and that greater billing and policy transparency can clarify what's exogenous versus what's controllable. He describes how the impact of data centers can differ between vertically integrated cost-plus states and deregulated commodity-market states, and unpacks behind-the-meter realities, including how hyperscalers often prefer a grid connection for reliability but still deploy backup generation. We discuss the administration's push for hyperscalers to sign long-term contracts to enable new generation build, policymakers' heightened focus on avoiding blackouts, and why this is often a peaking problem more than a supply problem. Jim emphasizes how incentives, rather than intent, drive investment behavior in regulated versus deregulated markets, challenges the narrative that data centers are inherently driving higher power prices, and highlights the economic value of reliability investments and peak-load management in shaping long-term system costs. It was a wide-ranging discussion, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue with Jim in a future episode. As you will hear, we reference a few items in the discussion. The dominant market theme this week, and for much of the year, has been extreme volatility across commodities (Bitcoin, Energy, and Metals). On the crude oil market front, WTI price is trading at ~$63/bbl, with volatility elevated over t

In this episode of SpaceTime, we explore new insights into the origins of Earth's water, groundbreaking discoveries beneath the surface of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, and how tectonic plate movements may have influenced Earth's climate throughout history.New Clues on Earth's Water OriginsA recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that asteroid and comet impacts could only account for a small fraction of Earth's water supply. By analyzing oxygen isotopes in lunar regolith collected during the Apollo missions, researchers found that the early Earth likely retained little to no water during its formative years. This challenges long-held beliefs and suggests that the majority of Earth's water must have originated from other sources, rather than being delivered by celestial bodies.Unprecedented Volcanic Activity on IoNASA's Juno spacecraft has captured remarkable data on Io, the most volcanically active body in our solar system. Observations from a December flyby revealed the most energetic eruption ever detected on Io, affecting a vast area of 65,000 square kilometers. The findings indicate that interconnected magma reservoirs beneath Io's surface are responsible for this extraordinary volcanic activity, providing new insights into the moon's geological dynamics and evolution.Tectonic Plates and Earth's ClimateA new study suggests that carbon released from shifting tectonic plates may have played a significant role in Earth's climatic transitions, rather than volcanic activity as previously thought. Researchers reconstructed carbon movements over the last 540 million years, providing evidence that carbon emissions from mid-ocean ridges were the primary drivers of climate shifts between ice ages and warmer periods. This research reshapes our understanding of past climate dynamics and offers valuable insights for future climate models.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesProceedings of the National Academy of SciencesJournal of Geophysical Research PlanetsCommunications Earth and EnvironmentBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

A severe bomb cyclone is targeting the East Coast, threatening to freeze supply chains just days after a similar crisis left trucks stranded in Louisiana. Drivers and fleets are urged to prioritize safety and understand their rights regarding coercion as winter weather intensifies along critical corridors like I-95. While the physical world battles ice, Wall Street celebrates C.H. Robinson's surging stock price following reports of impressive profit margins. The company credits its "lean AI" strategy for decoupling volume growth from headcount, signaling a fundamental shift in how brokerages manage efficiency. The autonomous sector also sees massive investment as Waabi secures $750 million to expand its "physical AI" technology for both trucking and robotaxis. This funding round supports a major partnership with Uber to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles, aiming for commercialization by 2027. In the courts, major business groups are backing freight brokers in a Supreme Court case that could redefine liability for trucking accidents. Proponents argue that federal law should shield brokers from state-level negligent hiring claims to prevent a costly patchwork of regulations. On the legislative front, a new bill offers a lifeline for heavy-duty towing operators by addressing restrictive length regulations during recovery operations. The proposed Towing Safety Act aims to clear accident scenes faster and improve roadside safety for first responders. Legal troubles continue for the R&R Family of Companies as new lawsuits allege the firm continued operations and accumulated debt while insolvent. Meanwhile, legacy carrier Schneider prepares for a leadership transition with Jim Filter set to take the helm as CEO this summer. Today's episode comes directly from a listener's question, and I love these because they tell me people are thinking about their futures. The listener didn't share a name, just their email address. Anyway, their question was what are the three best jobs in the distribution field? Now, before I answer that, I want to say, and it's the truth, in my opinion anyway, there are no bad jobs in distribution. We've learned that every role matters. Every position contributes to the movement of product, safety, productivity, and ultimately the success of the team and operation. But if you're asking me, and I'm familiar with most all of them, from loading trucks to executive leadership, the three positions that consistently stand out as strong, long-term career roles, my answer is the putaway forklift operator, the order selector, and the front-line lead and supervisor positions. I'll share some thoughts about all three, and then I want to share a bit about something just as important. Three of my go to entry level positions, or my favorite get your foot in the door tasks. Unloaders, loaders, and sanitation, because those are often the doors that open other opportunities in this industry. Ok, we'll start with the putaway forklift operator. This is the person responsible for taking inbound product and placing them into their correct warehouse location, often at height, at quite the pace, and always with safety and accuracy in mind. Put-away operators are trusted with the inventory, operating expensive equipment, they may be working in narrow aisles, with tall vertical storage, and the accuracy of the entire picking operation downstream. If the put-away goes wrong, everything past that step goes wrong. A mis-slotted pallet can cause lost inventory, missed orders, wasted man hours, and indirect time that can never be recovered. That's why experienced put-away operators are respected and valued. This role hones our forklift skills, teaches us system disciplines, and the importance of inventory accuracy, focus and patience. It's also a position that often leads to an Inventory control future, replenishment roles, lead operator positions and a track to Supervisor and front line management. And here's something people don't always realize, put-away operators are usually among the highest paid hourly associates in a facility, especially when experience, certifications, and productivity are factored in. It's not flashy. But it's an important position. And it's absolutely a career role. And If distribution has a heartbeat, the order selector is it. Order selectors are the engine that drives outbound operations. They take the orders, pick the product, build the pallets, and prepare shipments for delivery. This role teaches discipline and accountability in a way few others do. Order selectors live in a world of measured productivity, accuracy expectations, time standards and quality checks. And it's not for everyone, people sometimes look down on order selecting because it's so physically demanding. But in reality, it's one of the best training grounds in distribution. Selectors learn product knowledge, slotting logic, warehouse flow, time management, and personal accountability. They also learn how operations truly work, because when something upstream fails or gets messed up, selectors feel it immediately. The great selectors often become, lead selectors, trainers, safety champions, and Supervisors. I've seen countless leaders start as selectors, and the reason is simple, they understand the operation at ground level. And that experience cannot be taught in a classroom. Now let's talk about leadership. Front-line leads and supervisors are where experience turns into influence. This role is not just about numbers. It's about people. Supervisors are responsible for Safety, Productivity, Attendance, Training, Conflict resolution, Coaching, and Communication. They bridge the gap between Management expectations, and front-line realities. It's one of the most challenging roles in any warehouse, and, I believe, one of the most rewarding. Great supervisors, know the work, respect the team, always lead by example, hold everyone to the same standards, and I hope Coach instead of just correct their teams. This role opens doors to Operations management, Safety leadership, Training and development, Inventory and planning, and Executive leadership. In my humble opinion the best supervisors usually come from the floor. They've unloaded trucks. They've selected orders. They've operated equipment. And because of that, they lead with credibility. Ok, there's a little on three positions in the distribution field that many aspire to master. Now I want to talk about 3 positions that can help get us to them. When I'm asked how to break into warehousing I share some thoughts on the Unloader, Loader, and Sanitation positions. These jobs don't always get the respect they deserve, but they are not dead end jobs. They're great entry points and they are how many careers begin. First up is the Unloader. Unloaders are the first link in the inbound chain. They break down freight, handle every inbound piece, and set the tone for accuracy and safety on the dock. Unloaders learn product handling, teamwork, how to handle a quick pace and the Warehouse layout and inbound systems. I've seen many unloaders move into forklift roles, Receiving, Inventory and Lead positions. The flip side of the unloader is the loader. Loaders are responsible for the final step before product leaves the building. This position carries with it a lot of pressure. They must understand Weight distribution, Load integrity, Accuracy and Timing or dispatching, when the drivers will be leaving. Loaders develop attention to detail, physical discipline, and accountability. Many loaders become Drivers, Dispatchers leads and Supervisors, even Safety leaders. And then we have the sanitation position. Sanitation teams keep facilities Clean, Safe, compliant and audit ready. Without sanitation Slips and falls increase, Equipment breaks down from running over debris and Product quality can suffer. Sanitation can offer us Steady work, Consistent hours, and a foot in the door to our industry. And I've seen sanitation associates move into building maintenance, Equipment operation, Safety roles, and Supervisory tracks. Here's the truth about distribution careers. Very few people start at the top. Most start where opportunities or positions are open. I believe what separates those who grow into other positions from those who stay stuck in one isn't the starting job. It's showing up, being on time, Learning the operation, saying yes to or accepting training, maintaining a positive attitude, and always Following safety and procedures as instructed. I'm going to say it again, this industry rewards consistency. If you prove you can be trusted with Time management, Equipment, Safety, and People, more doors open for us. So, when someone asks me, what are the best jobs in distribution? I struggle with my answer. Yes, put-away forklift operator, order selector, and front-line lead or supervisor are outstanding career roles. But every career usually starts somewhere else. Unloaders. Loaders. Sanitation. Those aren't just jobs. They're starting points. And in distribution, if you're willing to learn, work, and grow, there's no ceiling on where you can go. So honestly, I think the best job in the distribution industry is the one you love doing. Thanks again for the question and thank you for spending a few minutes of your day with me. Always be planning your next step, and remember the safety of you and your team always comes first!
Major retailers are retreating from the logistics sector as American Eagle and Office Depot pull the plug on their third-party services. This strategic pivot returns focus to core retail operations, forcing thousands of outside brands to find new fulfillment partners. On the technology front, Gatik has reached a major milestone by launching fully driverless commercial trucking operations at scale in North America. These autonomous medium-duty trucks are now executing daily revenue-generating routes across Texas, Arkansas, and Arizona without human intervention. Drivers and consumers are also feeling the pain at the pump as diesel prices surge amid a severe winter cold snap. Refinery disruptions in the Gulf Coast and high heating oil demand have pushed the benchmark up by more than 16 cents in just two weeks. We explore the recent surge in gold and silver prices, weighing inflation fears against global instability and market psychology, and consider how Trump's negotiation style plays out in diplomacy and financial markets. We also examine a new film about Melania Trump, why it misses the larger political moment, and how culture increasingly drifts away from economic reality. Central bank buying is what he believes boosted confidence in retail investors to back the metal trade. Ben later explains signs that gold's impressive run can signal the "beginning of the end" of the U.S. dollar's positioning as the global reserve currency. What can replace it? Dealers argue the decision misreads state law and opens the door for OEMs to bypass franchised networks.Ten VW, Audi, and Porsche dealers filed suit this week, alleging Colorado improperly granted Scout a dealer license by treating it as an EV-only manufacturer.Dealers argue Scout's extended-range EV system is effectively a plug-in hybrid, disqualifying it from EV-only exceptions in state law.The lawsuit also claims Scout is an “alter ego” of Volkswagen Group, which already has franchised dealers and is barred from direct salesThe affordability conversation is turning its sights on insurers. After years of sharp rate hikes, home and auto insurers are posting near-record profits—and lawmakers are taking notice.Insurers are rebounding strongly, with the property and casualty industry posting its highest underwriting profit in nearly 20 years.Lawmakers in states like New York and Oklahoma are pushing profit caps, arguing rate hikes are out of step with household budgets.Auto insurance rates have stabilized nationally, but remain uneven by state, fueling continued consumer frustration.Lemonade is launching a new auto-insurance product built specifically for Tesla Full Self-Driving users, promising per-mile rates up to 50% lower when the software is engaged—an early glimpse at how insurance may evolve alongside partial autonomy.Lemonade will price insurance based on when Tesla's Supervised Full Self-Driving system is active versus human driving. The product relies on new vehicle telemetry data enabled through a technical collaboration with Tesla.Launch begins in Arizona on January 26, with Oregon following a month later. The move signals insurers are preparing for a future where software performance, not just driver behavior, sets risk and price.Lemonade president Shai Wininger said, “A driver who can see 360 degrees, never gets drowsy, and reacts in milliseconds isn't like any other driver.”This episode of the Automotive State of the Union is brought to you by Amazon Autos: Meet customers where they shop: reach high-intent buyers shopping for their next Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Burnout isn't about working too many hours. And imposter syndrome isn't a confidence problem. In this episode, I sit down with Garrett Wood, clinical hypnotherapist, executive functioning specialist, and founder of Gnosis Therapy, to unpack what's really happening beneath burnout, high masking, and the boom-and-bust cycle so many high achievers are stuck in. Garrett works with executives, founders, and entrepreneurs who want high performance without sacrificing their health, relationships, or peace of mind. His work is rooted in biopsychosocial science and nervous-system-first performance, helping leaders build success through their well-being—not at its expense. Together, we explore imposter syndrome, nervous system debt, misalignment, and why traditional fixes like mindset work, balance, or self-care often don't stick. This conversation offers a radically different—and deeply validating—lens on burnout and sustainable success. What You'll Learn in This Episode 1. Burnout Is Nervous System Debt (Not Weakness) Burnout happens when stress, pressure, and constant masking outweigh recovery and regulation. Your body has a bio-budget, and when withdrawals exceed deposits, burnout becomes inevitable—no matter how "resilient" you are. 2. Why Imposter Syndrome Persists for High Achievers Garrett explains why imposter syndrome often shows up in capable, high-performing people—and how it's tied to nervous system overload, attachment patterns, and identity pressure rather than lack of skill or experience. 3. The Power of Integration: Subconscious, Conscious & Somatic Lasting change doesn't come from mindset alone. Garrett's work integrates: Subconscious (clinical hypnotherapy) Conscious (outcome-based coaching) Somatic (body-based regulation) This is why change holds—even under pressure. 4. Burnout as Misalignment, Not Fragility People don't burn out because they're fragile. They burn out when there's a mismatch between their biology, beliefs, and environment. You can thrive at 80 hours or break at 40—alignment makes the difference. 5. The 7 Drivers of Sustainable Success Garrett walks through the seven areas that determine whether success feels energizing or depleting: Sensory intelligence Bio-budgets (energy, sleep, recovery) Emotional regulation Core beliefs Attachment patterns Values alignment Executive functioning strengths Burnout always lives in the gap between nervous system needs and environment across these dimensions. 6. Why "Balance" and Self-Care Don't Fix Burnout Many high achievers try downtime, vacations, boundaries, or mindset work—and still feel stuck. We talk about why these tools fail when they're not paired with nervous system calibration and identity alignment—and how recovery needs to be systematic, not accidental. Key Takeaways Burnout is nervous system debt, not personal failure Imposter syndrome is often physiological, not psychological Sustainable success is built through well-being, not sacrifice Alignment matters more than hours worked High performance can feel lighter, calmer, and more fulfilling Connect with Garrett Wood Website: https://www.gnosistherapy.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gnosistherapy/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gnosistherapy/
The Department of Transportation is deploying artificial intelligence to enforce regulations against companies hiring illegal foreign drivers. This new initiative aims to identify fraud regarding non-domiciled CDLs that officials warn are driving down wages for American truckers, as detailed in DOT to use AI to go after illegal truckers. Southeastern Freight Lines is expanding its reach south of the border through a new partnership with Fletes Mexico Carga Express. The move is designed to streamline less-than-truckload shipments between the U.S. and Mexico with real-time tracking and faster customs clearance, according to Southeastern Freight Lines joins regional carriers moving into Mexico trade. A recent industry report indicates that parcel shipping rates have reached record highs driven by a proliferation of blanket surcharges. Even as fuel prices have declined, carriers hiked fuel surcharges significantly year-over-year to maintain revenue, a trend analyzed in Proliferation of parcel delivery surcharges drives up shipping rates. Finally, a new episode of The Long Haul features an interview with a non-domiciled CDL holder sharing his perspective on the regulatory crackdown. In this episode, I dive deep into why protein—especially high-quality whey protein isolate—becomes non-negotiable as we age, and why so many popular products completely miss the mark. I explain the real differences between whey concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate; why lactose intolerance is often a quality issue, not a whey issue; and how misleading media “best of” lists often favor cheaper, inferior formulations loaded with additives, sweeteners, and questionable sourcing. I also share why I launched B.rad Nutrition in the first place: after struggling as a consumer to find a truly clean, grass-fed, cold-processed whey protein isolate sourced directly from small family farms in Wisconsin and verified free of heavy metals. We also zoom out into the bigger longevity picture—how whey protein works with exercise to preserve muscle mass, grip strength, gait speed, and explosive power as we age. I break down the research, including a 2024 meta-analysis on whey protein in older adults, explain why leucine thresholds matter more with age, and connect the dots between strength training, sprinting, and long-term health markers like mile time, 400-meter performance, and grip strength. If you’re older, trending plant-based, short on time, or simply confused by the protein aisle, this episode lays out exactly what to look for, what to avoid, and why protein needs to come first—every single day. TIMESTAMPS: Whey protein continues to earn scientific support for its powerful health benefits. Pure andbioavailable whey isolate is the gold standard for whey protein. [01:05] It is recommended that you prioritize high-quality when it comes to supplements. [05:29] When wanting to purchase organic, bear in mind that if the item has thick skin like an avocado, it is not necessary to buy organic, but berries and other fruits and vegetables with the skin that is consumed, it is preferable to go for organic. [06:30] Whey is a byproduct of cheese manufacturing. [07:37] In older adults, whey protein can help maintain strength and muscle mass. [09:39] The time in the mile run is regarded as the single best predictor of one's ability to age gracefullythan any other thing, any blood value or laboratory test. [12:41] A missing feature of a longevity exerscise program is that brief explosive effort, sprinting andstrength training. [14:45] The body's ability to synthesize proteins, called protein synthesis, after a meal declines with age.[20:44] You need to focus on getting quality sources of protein that contain adequate levels of all nineessential amino acids. [22:51] It is recommended your goal to be around one gram of protein per pound of your ideal bodyweight.
