Monk Fruit Extract: Zero-Calorie Sweetener, Surprising Benefits? Ep. 1241 MAY 2025A recent PRISMA-guided systematic review published in Nutrients synthesized findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the impact of monk fruit extract (MFE) on metabolic health, lipid profiles, inflammation, and regulatory considerations. The review included a number of RCTs (note: while some search results indicated 10, others mentioned 5 included studies; refer to the final published article for the definitive number). The findings indicate that MFE may help reduce postprandial glucose levels (by 10–18% in included studies) and insulin responses (by 12–22%). Some studies also reported reductions in inflammatory markers such as IL-6 and TNF-α. No severe adverse effects were observed in the reviewed trials. The review also notes that MFE is approved for use in the United States and China, with its status under review in the European Union. The authors suggest MFE shows potential as a functional food ingredient for metabolic health, though they highlight the need for long-term clinical trials and a harmonized regulatory framework to confirm its long-term safety and efficacy within sustainable health strategies. Clean Power Hydrogen CEO Jonathan Duffy joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share news about the company's new license agreement with Lisheen H2 Energy Park Limited, known as Hidrigin. The collaboration includes a License Agreement granting Hidrigin the rights to manufacture up to 2GW of CPH2's innovative MFE electrolyser technology over the next 20 years. Additionally, the agreement encompasses a Sales Contract for the immediate delivery of a 1MW MFE220 electrolyser unit by CPH2, marking a significant advancement in Ireland's hydrogen infrastructure. Under the License Agreement, the electrolysers built will be dedicated exclusively to Hidrigin and will not be sold to third parties. CPH2 will receive staged payments as project milestones are achieved, as well as revenue from component sales and a per-unit technology fee. Hidrigin plans to integrate these electrolysers into its solar and wind energy projects, producing green hydrogen for commercial sale via its Lisheen BioEnergy Campus. Backed by €100 million in funding, Hidrigin's first green hydrogen pilot project is expected to start in 2025, with the first Irish-made MFE220 unit anticipated for completion the same year. This agreement aligns with CPH2's mission to expand clean hydrogen production and bolster Ireland's renewable energy infrastructure, fostering growth in the hydrogen economy and supporting nationwide decarbonization goals. #proactiveinvestors #cph2 #cleanpowerhydrogen #aim #cph2 #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Are you looking for a highly respective quantitative program that will prepare you for a career in the most demanding, analytical, and data-driven areas of financial services? Today's guest, Jacob Gallice, Executive Director of Berkeley Haas Master in Financial Engineering program, shares what it takes to get accepted to this highly competitive program. Welcome to the 540th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me. Before we dive into today's interview, I want to mention a resource at Accepted that can help you prepare your statement of purpose to a Master in Financial Engineering program as well as the other graduate programs. Download 5 Fatal Flaws to Avoid in Your Grad School Statement of Purpose to learn how to avoid the five most common mistakes we see in grad school statements of purpose, as well as tips on how to write a statement of purpose that makes your story memorable and highlights your qualifications for your target graduate program. Our guest today is Jacob Gallice, Executive Director at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business' Master of Financial Engineering. Jacob earned his bachelor's at Binghamton University and his MBA at NYU Stern. He has worked for Goldman Sachs and Heidrick & Struggles in the financial services world. In 2017, he pivoted to admissions as Associate Director and then Senior Associate Director of Admissions at NYU Stern before deciding he preferred west coast weather and moving to Berkeley in 2021, first as Program Director of the MFE, then he became Executive Director of the MFE in March 2023. So I can still, I think, congratulate you on your promotion, right? Still within 12 months. [1:56] Sure. Thanks. Congratulations, Jacob, and welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [2:02] Happy to be here. Now let's start with a really basic question. What is the Master in Financial Engineering program at Berkeley Haas, and what does it prepare one to do? [2:06] Excellent question. A financial engineering degree is a specialized master's degree here that prepares one to enter the field of quantitative finance and more largely, can prepare someone to enter the fields of financial technology, namely in roles such as data science, machine learning. But largely speaking, what we're talking about here are individuals who are interested in the intersection of technology and finance and working within the ecosystem of what we kind of call the niche field of quant finance. Can you provide an overview of both the full-time and the part-time options at the MFE program and roughly how many students participate in each of the programs? [2:48] I can indeed. So we enroll about 80 students in our flagship full-time program. We're one of the only programs out there in the market that is a one-year or 12-month program. So the program is intensive, it's immersive, but it prepares students very well to enter and break into this field. So that is the one-year program. We can certainly get into that a little bit more in due course. I contrast that with the part-time program, which gives students the flexibility to do their studies over a two- to three-year period, and it's a much more small specialized cohort. Typically you're looking at roughly 7 to 10 students in that cohort. It's really designed for working professionals who are simply looking to augment their education, their studies, and apply that real world knowledge directly on the job. So we started that program a few years ago to sort of allow those students who otherwise did not feel it was necessary to leave their job, but still wanted to tap into the great education here at Berkeley Haas. Do they basically have to be in the Bay Area for the part-time program? [3:59] Actually they do not. No, we do allow students in that option to take their courses remotely if they so choose. Is there an in-person component to the part-time program, and do both the online and offline students ever meet?

E a Forza Italia?

Lara and Jennifer talk to Zack Jackson about the creation of Module Federation and its place in the Micro Frontend landscape. Zack explains the benefits of Federated Modules, the need for code splitting, concerns with deploying micro frontend dependencies and more. Zack schools Jennifer on Webpack basics like plugins vs. loaders, and explains how to navigate Webpack's expansive API surface. Jennifer & Lara ask about Zack's journey to creating Module Federation and his learnings along the way. Zack shares key concepts to getting started with Module Federation and resources to help developers get startedFor Module Federation blogs and more: https://scriptedalchemy.medium.com/For more on Zack Jackson: https://twitter.com/ScriptedAlchemy
In our second installment on Microfrontend (MFE) Architecture with Angular Joel Denning, the founder and core contributor for Single SPA teaches Jennifer and Brian the approach to building MFEs with Single SPA. Joel gives us a brief introduction to Single SPA and how it came about, along with the challenges he was trying to solve at the time. We also learn from Joel a few strategies for sharing dependencies, such as module federation or SystemJS.The biggest takeaway from this episode is that MFE architecture requires independent deployments. That means you should be able to deploy a single SPA without having to deploy all applications in the MFE. Of course, there are other opportunities to tackle when building an MFE, including server rendering, sharing dependencies, and sharing components that we discuss.Part 2 of our series on MFEs is jam-packed with knowledge as well as tips and tricks for tackling the complexities of building at scale with microfrontends.https://twitter.com/Joelbdenning
We are also always being told that schools are supposed to be centres of communities, especially in rural areas. If that's the case, then it follows that services such as broadband would be centred around these places. So in this episode, if I were the MfE, I would be making broadband hubs around schools.

For the last couple of years, I've been telling you what I would do if I were the Minister for Education but today I am joined by Gary Keogh, who, after many years working in the UK has some advice for me - in a way it might be best called What I Wouldn't Do If I were the MfE. Gary has over 10 years' experience in education, working in secondary school, undergraduate / postgraduate teaching, adult education, and teacher-training. He is the author of three books, has run marathons and even finds time to play gigs as a singer/songwriter. He says he is a dad-to-be, which should put a stop to his gallop! Gary asked me if I'd be interested in talking to him because, like me, he has witnessed how the Irish Education System tends to blindly follow the education trends of the UK and while that may have had some benefits 20 years ago when I was a newly qualified teacher, the same cannot be said now.

Curious about how 'those bureaucrats in Wellington' think? Sarah Perriam, host of Sarah's Country uncovers the nurturing nature of the woman with one of the hardest jobs in the primary sector right now. With policy flying out the door at pace from Minister Parker, her team has been elevated within the Ministry for the Environment as they have realized to achieve the outcomes they need to work with farmers and growers on the ground and provide better feedback loops. Sarah has an in-depth yarn to Sara Clarke, Director - Policy Implementation and Delivery at MfE understand the humanity behind the women tasked with implementing climate and freshwater, the Overseer review, and intensive winter grazing regulations being rolled out and she wants to do this with relationships across the sector to work together to see progress. "We need to have all parties in the room leading this change in order to design something that's going to land well and be implementable at the end of the process, potentially to something like emissions pricing, which ultimately will affect 20 to 30 thousand farms across New Zealand," says Sara Clarke. The capabilities of 102nd Security Forces Squadron Airmen to defend the perimeter of Otis Air National Guard Base were put to the test during a no-notice exercise here, Jan. 27. Security Forces ensure resources and personnel are kept safe and secure 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These professionals are knowledgeable in the fundamental aspects of a concept known as Force Protection – a doctrine that mandates the safeguard of lives and valuable resources. According to Joint Publication 3-10, Joint Security Operations in Theater, “Force Protection is multi-dimensional, providing multi-layered protection of forces and resources. It covers actions at home station, in transit and at deployed locations. It includes not only protecting military members and civilian employees, but also their families, contract employees, and visitors while on an installation.” “In the Security Forces enterprise our members are called Defenders,” said 2d Lt Allen Nancarrow, operations officer for the 102nd SFS. “The term comes from our motto, Defensor Fortis, [meaning] Defenders of the Force. It is the responsibility and mission of every Security Forces Defender to provide force protection. The members of the 102nd Security Forces Squadron stand ready to react to any situation that could endanger the force.” To ensure personnel assigned to these critical positions are prepared to meet the challenges of such an important role, Mission Focused Exercises are routinely conducted. MFEs are simulated but realistic scenarios that test the competency of Airmen and provide confidence in their skills and training, but also provide leadership with a clear evaluation of mission capabilities. “The IG is committed to evaluating all aspects of mission on Otis ANGB ranging from SFS protection to Cyber mission execution,” said Capt. Craig Schoeck, Director of Inspections, “Embrace the changing exercise culture; it’s about progress not perfection.” To this end, the wing Inspector General’s Office, assisted by wing inspection team members from the 102nd SFS, planned a no-notice MFE to evaluate Security Forces’ response to an individual speeding past a checkpoint at an entry gate. The “suspect”, an inspector with the IG, floored the throttle of his POV when the entry controller waived him forward. True to his training, the controller deployed the active vehicle barriers, stopping the suspect in his tracks. Response to the attempted breach was instantaneous as communications between Defenders, coupled with their quick and skilled reaction to the scenario, brought an umbrella of security down upon the scene, and the assailant. Once the suspect was taken into custody and hand-cuffed, Airmen descended upon his vehicle which was searched thoroughly. Their efforts paid off. Raising the stakes, not only did the suspect storm the gate, but he was also “armed” with two simulated concealed weapons. Had this been an actual event, there would be more to the story. In this case, it was a simulation – but a simulation that yielded confidence; not only within the Airmen who protect the force, but by those who work on the installation each and every day who know they are safe and secure, due in no small part to this group of Defenders protecting them. Airmen were evaluated on their ability to stop and apprehend a suspect, searching the individual and vehicle, and proper procedures upon discovery of weapons. They effectively handled the situation. “Exercises such as this one, accomplish two things: First, it allows the unit to showcase their capabilities. Those capabilities are the products of training, communication, resources, and leadership,” said Mr. Scott Etler, Director of Inspections and the scenario’s ‘perpetrator’. “Second, it gives the IG the opportunity to provide unbiased feedback to the commander on how truly effective those capabilities are.” The 102nd SFS is committed to defending the mission by ensuring the safety of the wing’s most valuable resource, its Airmen. All personnel support force protection – all personnel serve as security forces’ eyes and ears. If you see or hear of anything suspicious, contact the 102nd IW Base Defense Operations Center at 508-968-4303. Remember, if you see something, say something!

Posts of Responsibility are promoted posts in Irish schools. During the recession, a moratorium was imposed on these posts. When they were to return, we were promised they would be revolutionised and made more relevant to 21st century leadership. Instead, nothing changed except for new labelling. In this episode, I'll be exploring how we missed out on a decent chance to examine the value of posts of responsibility and if I were the MfE how I would reassess these posts

If you've worked in a primary school for at least a decade, and you were asked what was the number one change in pupils since you began your career, it wouldn't be a surprise if children's mental health was top of the list. However, accessing services for mental health is almost impossible, leading to a deterioration of behaviours and putting the health, safety and well-being of all children at risk. This week, I'll be arguing that if I were the MfE, I would provide proper mental health services for pupils.

Summertime 2019 is drawing to a close, and it's time to beat that last blast of heat with some great tunes. When Video Game Grooves throws a summer block party, we have at least five people, which means regular hosts Jeremy, Paul, and Anthony are joined by two guest hosts this week. First, returning friend of the show Pete Smith is fresh off his release of Witcheye on Android and iOS, and he's here to talk about a little Secret of Mana with us. The music from an unofficial release takes us back to simpler times when trees were whales and JRPGs were pastoral, pastel, and primitivistic. (yes we had to search for a third "p" word -ed.) Also along for the ride is Debug Records' Caleb Denney, who we finally cajoled to come back to feature Mother Fucking Earthbound. In contrast to our first feature, MFE has its tongue in its cheek and its bionic slingshot in hand and hits us with a fun summertime vibe. We discuss the musical stylings of Erich WK and the ways in which Earthbound flirts with... musical re-appropriation. In our second segment we dismiss Pete to his always-on partying lifestyle, and we cover the new releases during our slightly-extended rest period, as well as highlighting some exciting products that are now shipping. In our final section we talk to Caleb about the post-mortem of Debug's first release, and talk about the fan (and non-fan) reaction after the vinyl arrives in homes around the world. What went well, what could have gone better, and what will he take into the label's next release, revealed inside! The Scoop on Berkeley’s Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) [Show Summary] Dr. Linda Kreitzman, Executive Director of the Master of Financial Engineering Program at UC Berkeley – Haas is passionate about the program. On today’s podcast Linda will take us through specific aspects of the program and what makes it unique, what it takes to be successful in the program, and some of the expected outcomes for graduates. Listen in to the “Queen of Quants!” Interview with Linda Kreitzman, Assistant Dean and Executive Director of the UC Berkeley Haas Master of Financial Engineering Program [Show Notes] Our guest today, Dr. Linda Kreitzman, earned her Honours Degree in Political Science, masters degrees in English, French and Spanish and later on a Ph.D. in Economics. Most importantly for our call today, she became program Director of the Master’s in Financial Engineering at UC Berkeley – Haas in 2000 and Executive Director of the program in 2006. Poets and Quants recently named her the “Queen of Quants” and in the same interview she identified herself as her students’ “surrogate mother.” Let’s learn more about the Haas MFE from this ultimate insider. Could you give an overview of the MFE program highlighting its distinctive features? [2:12] It’s a one-year program that starts in March and ends the following March, with four academic terms. After 75% of coursework is completed, students go anywhere in the world for a paid internship. The program is ranked #1 in the country and has 50% faculty and 50% industry professionals who teach in the program. We admit students who have PhDs, masters or straight from undergrads. We have a pre-programmed set of classes that anyone can take before coming to the program, which helps us assess them. We believe success is not just what happens in the MFE but also post-MFE. We place each and every student, which is what we love to do. If we find a student who is doing really well academically, we can recommend them for admission as early as their junior year, and then bring them on board and mentor them before they officially join. Any student at any university in the world can contact us about this. I understand that you’ve been the Director from Day 1. Why did Haas decide to have an MFE? [5:30] Haas’ decision to create the MFE came a little bit before I came on board in 2000, with professor emeritus David Pyle and dean Laura Tyson. There was a demand for financial engineers and students who could be very technical, with a stats programming skill set already, which MBA programs didn’t offer. There were other MFEs, CMU for example, but we were the first to launch an MFE at the business school, to make sure our students were not considered typical quants just doing number crunching, but that they had economic intuition and strong communication skills, which is what differentiates us from others. We wanted the ability to position our students in any field in finance or technology, not in the back room doing number crunching. What makes the MFE different from an MFin? Or an MBA? [9:45] The MFin tends to teach more the corporate finance side and is a general degree. With the MFE we are looking for people who already have strong programming, stats, math, and finance experience. We bring people who already have had corporate finance, and maybe already passed CFA level 1. Our program is much more technical, more data-science oriented. Also, the MBA program does not prepare students months or even years in advance but we do. Obviously academics, specifically in advanced quant subjects, are important to the MFE. The average GRE/GMAT quant percentile is 93.2 and the average verbal percentile is 77.7. The average UGPA is 3.75. Beyond the stats, what is the MFE looking for? [11:16] We are looking for people with strong logic skills, with a good understanding of financial markets (or willing to learn that), who are open to taking different courses to find their path,
