“That thing that made you weird? It's your superpower now.” In this episode, Michael Dargie chats with illustrator, animator, and all-around macabre misfit Ben Walker-Storey. From his spooky spot in Grass Valley, California—known for gold rushes and now monster sketches—Ben opens up about his life as a creator navigating ADHD, artistic reinvention, and DIY horror storytelling. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. Ben is the creative force behind Cheap Chills Fan Club, an online brand that's part creepy, part kitsch, and fully him. He draws, designs, animates, curates, and riffs on everything from vintage goths to B-movie monsters, often through alter ego “Roman Candelabra”—a persona born out of pandemic-era content making and camera anxiety. Together, they explore Ben's childhood obsession with He-Man and horror flicks, the joyful weirdness of mid-century design, and how his awkward 14-year-old self inspired his favourite character, Grigor. From live-streamed sketch sessions to animated shorts and a newly rebooted podcast, Ben's doing it all on his own freaky, funny terms. Whether it's making weird T-shirts, studying bad transfers of Day of the Triffids, or drawing 80s goths from yearbook photos, Ben is a creative rebel worth watching (and listening to). You'll laugh, you'll nod, you'll probably want to draw something after. Quotable quotes “The world doesn't care about you—and that's a good thing.” “I can't do things another way. I literally can't.” “Roman Candelabra just popped into my head. It was perfect.” “Grigor is me at my most awkward—he's my most honest character.” “That thing that made you weird? It's your superpower now.” Episode highlights Gold Country Life | Ben lives where the gold rush began—jeans might be the new treasure What's Ben Up To? | Goths, monsters, T-shirts, and animated dreams Clip Studio Love | Why Ben left Procreate for a better creative workflow ADHD & Art | Why rebellion and creative obsession go hand-in-hand He-Man Changed Everything | Where Ben's character obsession began Enter Grigor | The awkward devil-boy mascot of Ben's empire Under the Skin | The horror movie that broke Ben (in a good way) Seagull Baby | Imagining how parenthood affects horror response What the World Should Know | No one's watching you—do your weird thing Advice for Rebels | Patience, authenticity, and leaning into the awkward Roman Candelabra | The goth alter ego that gave Ben creative freedom Where to Find Ben | Cheap Chills Fan Club, Instagram, YouTube, and more Links from the episode Ben Walker-Storey on Instagram (https://instagram.com/cheapchillsfanclub) Cheap Chills Fanclub Website (https://cheapchillsfanclub.com) Cheap Chills Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/cheap-chills-on-art-and-monsters/id1322125727) Hosted by: Michael Dargie THEREBELREBELPODCAST.COM | LINKEDIN.COM Get Your Copy of Michael's Book: "BrandJitsu™: Move Your Brand From 'Meh' To Memorable" Indigo | Barnes & Noble | MichaelDargie.com

What's up, dudes? Remember when Sears, JC Penney, and Montgomery Wards would print wish books? Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ and Michael May from After Lunch do, and they're with me to look through the 1985 Sears Wish Book! From clothes to jewelry to toys, it had every gift idea you could possibly want! The book starts off with a nice little poem, spread out every fourth page. What follows immediately are pages of value gifts, including an actual suit of armor. Then there are red pages of gifts under $100. Merry Christmas indeed! Next comes women's fashions followed by jewelry and girls attire. Of course, boys clothes, shoes, men's wear, and accessories come next. After the Christmas decorations are a wide variety of appliances, clocks, dish ware, and sports gear. The best part of the entire publication follows: toys! After the Super Powers line, GoBots, Transformers, and Voltron are highlighted! The relatively new Sectaurs line gets a whole page, and both GI Joe and He-Man get double spreads! Return of the Jedi gets a page, and M.A.S.K. Shares a page with Wheeled Warriors!Subsequently, Barbies, stuffies, TVs, and cameras get entire sections devoted to them.Dual cassette decks? Check. Oversized fleece terry pullovers? Got ‘em. Masters of the Universe soft and snuggly slippers? Definitely! So grab your Omagles, pick up your pool cue, and scour through this episode on the 1985 Sears Wish Book!Horror Movie BBQFB: @HorrorMovieBBQTwitter: @HorrorMovieBBQIG: @horrormoviebbqAfter LunchGive us a buzz! We bring you back in time to Tad's childhood, where he was influenced by He-Man and many other shows of that era. In our Advice segment, Tad talks about how being a Jack of All Trades can actually be a boon to set you apart as an artist. Send us a textIf you're reading this, chances are you grew up with cartoons. We all grabbed a bowl of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs on Saturday mornings, and sat cross-legged in front of our family TVs as kids to watch generation-defining 'toons — ranging from Bugs Bunny to My Little Pony to He-Man. But at some point, "cartoons" crossed a tipping point and became "animation." The Flintstones, The Smurfs and Scooby-Doo evolved into South Park, Ren & Stimpy and The Simpsons. And just like that, cartoons weren't just for kids anymore. So to what do we attribute the staying power of animation? Is it nostalgia? Is it that we embrace our entertainment growing along with us? How did we get from Steamboat Willie to Pickle Rick? Pop this particularly wide-ranging edition of FYF into your earholes, and kick it around with the boys.

Tonka needed something to get them out of a $10,000,000 hole. The needed to transform their situation. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Simple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those. [Pinpoint Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, and we're talking about empires. And the one you gave me now is I have to admit, I am familiar with the brand, but I'm not an active participant in the brand. I think I've mentioned on here before, I raised four daughters, and so today's topic is Transformers. And none of my daughters were ever into Transformers as a toy. I was beyond toys when Transformers, I think first came around. So I've never even really jumped into the movies. But big, big brand. Stephen Semple: Huge brand. Dave Young: Tell me how they got started. Stephen Semple: Well, and the interesting thing, I almost included my oldest daughter, Crystal, in the recording of this, and I decided that, no, we might do a follow-up episode with her because she is a massive Transformers fan. Dave Young: Wow. Okay. Stephen Semple: And the interesting thing is she never played with them as a kid, but she found herself into the fandom. And today there's a whole thing I want to do about fandoms because it really speaks to the role that social media plays with a lot of companies. Dave Young: I feel like as a kid, I would've loved them. Stephen Semple: Because there's this unbelievably rich storyline behind Transformers that is incredible. And then it's actually one that is fragmented into the Michael Bay Transformers storyline versus the historic ones, because Michael Bay is the one who made the movies. It's this crazy world when you dig into it. But, the story of Transformers is actually a story of a battle between two decent-sized companies. So it's not normally what we do, but it was so interesting, I thought we got to talk about this because it's a story about a battle between Tonka and Hasbro. Dave Young: Oh, man. Just like Wonka and the other guy. Yeah. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Today the Transformers franchise, I think is a $25 billion franchise between the movies and the toys. It is massive. And the story goes back to we're in July of 1983, and Tonka is struggling for a new hit. Tonka is being run by Steve Shank, and they're like $10 million in the hole, and they're known for trucks. And think back to the '80s, what's happening, video games are growing and the market is shifting away from things like playing with trucks. And Tonka did not shift with it. So they're really, really struggling. And Shank has hired a Mattel veteran, Pat Fellie. He's the guy who basically helped turn things around at Mattel with He-Man. So he was basically the really a key person with developing of He-Man. And so they need something quick. And the shortcut is to license existing toys because the development and manufacturing is done. It's quicker and cheaper to market. So they go out everywhere looking around for something to market, and they come across this toy that Knickerbocker has. Knickerbocker is going out of business, and it's this interesting toy, which is a car and a robot, but it's a cheap knockoff. The real one is being done in Japan by Bandai, which is making this thing called a Machine Robo. And so Steve Shank heads to Tokyo to get the rights. And Bandai demands, okay, well, we can make this for you, but you got to buy 800,000 units as part of the deal, and Tonka has never sold that much,
With a rare exception here and there, most scientists will at least complete a college-level science class before making their first cancer research breakthrough. Heman Bekele, on the other hand, is just wrapping up his sophomore year of high school. By the time he was named Time Magazine's Kid of the Year in 2024, Heman was already generating buzz in the scientific community. The year before, he'd won the grand prize in the 2023 3M Young Scientist's Challenge, in which kids compete to think of the most unique solutions to common problems. His entry? A soap that could potentially be used to treat skin cancer, inspired by his early childhood years in Ethiopia. “One of the things that really stood out to me was that a lot of people worked really long hours outside in the sun,” says Heman, who first began developing the idea when he was around 11 years old. Over time, he learned more about skin cancer, its prevalence in low- and middle-income countries, and the lack of awareness and treatments for patients in those countries. “I wanted to take action within the field of skin cancer and make it more affordable to get treatment,” he explains. From there, Heman began a long, slow, trial-and-error process that ultimately led him to soap as a treatment delivery device. “What is the universal product that everyone uses? I landed on soap, which significantly outweighed every other option.” In this episode of the Your Stories podcast, Heman discusses the story behind his idea for a soap to treat skin cancer, along with the need for affordable skin cancer treatment and the challenges of finding scientific mentors when you're still too young to get a driver's license.

[2 Chronicles 5:11-14 NKJV] And it came to pass when the priests came out of the [Most] Holy [Place] (for all the priests who [were] present had sanctified themselves, without keeping to their divisions), [12] and the Levites [who were] the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, and with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets-- [13] indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers [were] as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, [saying]: "[For He is] good, For His mercy [endures] forever," that the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, [14] so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.A ____________________ mentality is not the problem. It's a symptom of the real problem: _______________ from truth.[Matthew 11:27-29 NKJV] "All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and [the one] to whom the Son wills to reveal [Him]. [28] "Come to Me, all [you] who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.Transformative Rest comes when God to reveals the __________ about ___________ in the light of the truth about ___________.[John 21:11-17 NKJV] [Hebrews 3:12-15; 4:8-9 NKJV] Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; [13] but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, [15] while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." [4:8] For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. [9] There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.The Promised Land of “Rest” is not a ___________ or a ___________, it's a ___________.[Exodus 20:18-21 NKJV] [Hebrews 10:11-14 NKJV] And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. [12] But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, [13] from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. [14] For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.Jesus took our ___________ in the sacrifice so we could ___________ ___________ in His place of rest.[Hebrews 4:11-13 NKJV] Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. [12] For the word of God [is] living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. [13] And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things [are] naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account.[Genesis 32:24-30 NKJV]

Föstudagsgestur Mannlega þáttarins í þetta sinn var leikarinn Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson. Hann hefur mikið látið að sér kveða eftir að hann útskrifaðist úr leiklistarskólanum, bæði í leikhúsi og fyrir framan myndavélina þar sem hann hefur leikið margvísleg hlutverk. En svo fyrir rúmum tíu árum fékk hann fyrsta hlutverk sitt í erlendu kvikmyndaverkefni og þá fór boltinn að rúlla. Í dag flýgur hann heimshornanna á milli og leikur í gríðarstórum kvikmyndum og sjónvarpsþáttaröðum, Game of Thrones, Succession, nýjustu ofurhetjumyndinni um Captain America og nú er hann að leika í kvikmynd um He-Man, eða Garp eins og hann kallaðist á íslensku. Við fórum með Jóhannesi aftur á æskuslóðirnar, en hann ólst að hluta til upp í Færeyjum og brunuðum svo með honum í gegnum lífið til dagsins í dag. Psalm 88 WorksheetOne of the most interesting things about this Psalm and the next is that they are written by 2 men named Heman the Ezrahite and Ethan the Ezrahite. Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were each descendants of Levi's sons Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Asaph was from Gershon; Heman from the line of Kohath; Ethan from Merari (1 Chr. 6:31-48). Heman has the added distinction of being the grandson of _______________________ (1 Chr. 6:33).Asaph wrote 12 Psalms, 11 here in book 3 of the Psalms; Heman wrote Psalm 88 and Ethan wrote Psalm 89. So 13 of the 17 Psalms of Book 3 are attributed to David's key music leaders from the tribe of Levi. The tone of Psalm 88 is very much one of _____________________________. It appears the Psalmist is facing suffering and death is very discouraged. It is not regarded as a Messianic Psalm, but several verses remind me of the suffering Jesus endured. As I read Psalm 88, look for the different ways death is referred to. Also look for the 3 times he speaks of calling out or crying out to the LORD. A man _______________________ death cries out to the LORD V. 1-9This man is despondent, but at least he is __________________________. Be honest with God in your prayers like in Psalm 88, and then go on to the kind of perspective that Psalm ____________ gives! The first reference to death is in verse 3, the word grave or Sheol. Sheol occurs 64 times in the Old Testament. The second reference to death is in verse 4, the word pit or bor. Bor occurs 61 times in the Old Testament. The third reference to death is in verse 5, “adrift among the dead.” The word for dead is mut, which occurs 693 times in the Old Testament. The sixth and seventh references to death are the words darkness and depths in verse 6.The word “wrath” in verse 7 reminds me of when Jesus was bearing our sin on the cross and cried out, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me” (2 Cor. 5:21; John 3:36). Verse 8 reminds me of Jesus “shut up” on the cross, with so many of His followers not there to support Him. Jesus can identify with the Psalmist and any of us who feels neglected or forsaken by _____________. Verses 1 and 9 begin and end the first section by crying out to the LORD in the midst of this man facing death. A man ______________________ death cries out to the LORD V. 11-18Verses 10-12 feature 6 questions that it appears the Psalmist fears the answer is no but Christians now know the answer is ________________ in Christ!Let's not forget our count of references to death – verses 10-12 have the eighth through ________________ references to death! Verse 13 gives the one note of hope that after death, the “___________________________” will come. We borrow that hope from this being near to Psalm 86 by David.“I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forevermore. For great is Your mercy toward me, and You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.” -Psalm 86:11-12Back in Psalm 88, the Psalmist wants to know, he wants to feel what David feels and __________________ in Psalm 86, but he is on the struggle bus. Verses 15 to the end make that struggle clear.Verse 15 gives us at least the 14th reference to death. With other references to being “cut off”, “wrath” and “terrors,” we may get all the way to ________________ references to death. Why is this discouraging Psalm in the Psalter, meant to be sung by the people? Sometimes getting the way we feel out there begins the ___________________________. Psalm 88 is like parts of the book of Ecclesiastes, that really describe the emptiness in life without God. Ecclesiastes brings to despair to then drive to faith in God (Ecc. 12:13-14). Psalm 89 does that for book 3 of of the Psalms. After the discouraging note of Psalm 88, Psalm 89 includes this thought to God's people when they feel discouraged:Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, nor allow My faithfulness to fail. -Psalm 89:33

Yes, there is news to talk too - some of it huge. Like a certain huge dragon. Huge fundraisers. Huge SDCC ecto-glow announcement. Two huge properties join forces (gotta build 'em all). One huge Shredder (bro lifts). But bigger than ALL of those, is the unexpected parcel of absolute joy sent by our favourite Canadian, the one and only Colin Betts. This has to be seen (heard?) to be believed. In spite of some truely awful postage costs, comes so many gifts filled with attention to detail, insight, humor and most importantly, love. It was a gigantic risk... a brand-new character and product line set to launch alongside some of the most popular toy brands in history. How would this new character--that no one knew anything about--be able to stand out in an increasingly crowded toy market? One way it would stand out was physically as a new era in toys was about to begin. But it was more than just the toy line, as a new animated series would also help skyrocket this character to popularity and sales figures never thought possible... So let's go back to the early 1980s to witness the creation, launch, and success of one of the most popular toy brands of all time. It was 30 months that changed the 80s...
