This episode was recorded at the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Sabine Mann, Cornell University; Dr. Will Mustas, Progressive Dairy Solutions; Dr. Don Niles, Dairy Dreams LLC; and Joey Airosa, Airosa Dairy Farms, introduce themselves. (0:48)Dr. Mann outlines the high points of her presentation. Giving an adequate amount of high-quality colostrum quickly after birth is essential to equip the calf with the best chances to stay healthy. Colostrum is more than a solution of water and immunoglobulins, and we are continuing to learn more about other nutrients and growth factors that colostrum contains. (12:03)Dr. Niles and Mr. Airosa talk about colostrum and maternity protocols on their dairies. Each has dedicated maternity staff in charge of postnatal calf care. Don mentions they often have public tours of their dairy and shares some anecdotes. Joey's maternity staff try to get colostrum in calves within 30 minutes of birth and have worked out a good communication system to ensure seamless calf care when shift changes occur. (13:57)Dr. Mann emphasizes the timing of colostrum delivery is critical. But what about the amount? Should every calf get four liters? Joey notes they bottle feed and have settled on three quarts for Holstein calves and two quarts for Jersey calves. Sabine says research backs that up - calves will not voluntarily drink much more than 3-3.5 liters. Using esophageal feeders to give four liters could be overfeeding in some cases, which could cause slower emptying of the stomach and thus slower arrival and uptake of immunoglobulins at the small intestine. The four liter recommendation came from the idea that good quality colostrum probably had about 50 grams per liter of IgG, and at that time, we wanted to get 200 grams into the calf. Perhaps making a sheet with recommended amounts based on calf weights could be helpful for maternity staff.  Dr. Mann also clarifies that the 50 grams per liter of IgG is not really good quality colostrum. Most herds average about 90-100 grams per liter of IgG in colostrum. She recommends every farm find out how good their colostrum is and optimize feeding amounts from there. (22:45)Dr. Mann notes the importance of making sure dry cows are not deficient in protein supply and ensuring the dry period is long enough to create high-quality colostrum. While it's commonly thought older cows have better colostrum than young cows, she underlines again the importance of measuring colostrum quality to know for sure. She also highly recommends measuring colostrum quality from individual cows before pooling so that poor colostrum does not dilute good colostrum. (31:04)Dr. Mustas shares some of the challenges he's seeing on dairies where he consults. What can we do to control the bacteriological quality of colostrum? He notes there's no reason we can't get very low bacteria counts pre-pasteurization. Making sure maternity areas are clean and sanitary, udders are prepped very well, and harvesting equipment is not neglected are all great strategies. (35:53)Dr. Mann talks about individual cow variation in colostrum production and some factors that might influence including placental interactions, hormones, and genetics. (38:04)Scott and Sabine discuss some of the research around supplementing with choline during the dry period and subsequent colostrum production. (41:28)Dr. Niles comments that pasteurization of colostrum has been one of the most exciting technologies to come along. On his farm, the pasteurizer has given them much more control over colostrum quality and delivery time. Dr. Mann agrees storage of colostrum has given dairies the ability to be strategic about how they use colostrum, what colostrum they use, and to also plan for seasonal colostrum shortages. She agrees with Dr. Mustas that clean colostrum harvesting equipment is key to low bacterial counts. (44:13)Dr. Mustas talks about how the beef-on-dairy phenomenon has altered colostrum protocols. Calf ranches are giving deductions for poor colostrum scores when calves are received. Some operations even offer premiums or discounts on daily yardage depending on individual calf colostrum scores. (50:21)Joey, Don, and Sabine comment on the importance of finding the right people to work in maternity and instilling the idea that taking care of cows and calves is both a great responsibility and a great honor. (52:56)The panel wraps up with their take-home thoughts. In today's episode, we dive into the interplay between the gut and immune system, focusing specifically on the critical role of immunoglobulins in mucosal immunity. Immunoglobulins, specialized glycoproteins synthesized by B cells, serve as the frontline defenders within the gastrointestinal tract, where they neutralize pathogens and maintain immune homeostasis. We also explore the mechanisms by which these antibodies fortify the intestinal barrier and aid in preventing dysbiosis. We finish by going through tools for supporting immunoglobulins. Topics: 1. Introduction - Overview of the gut-immune axis and focus on immunoglobulins. - How low levels of immunoglobulins can contribute to dysbiosis. 2. What Are Immunoglobulins? - Immunoglobulins (Igs) are glycoproteins produced by B cells. - They play a critical role in recognizing and neutralizing pathogens. - Antigen-binding sites for specific targeting. - Essential for immune homeostasis and pathogen elimination. 3. Immunoglobulins' Role in the Gut - Protect mucosal surfaces exposed to antigens. - B cells differentiate into plasma cells, and secrete immunoglobulins into the gut lumen. 4. Layers of the Intestinal Lining - Intestinal lumen is covered by a protective mucus layer. - Mucosa consists of epithelial cells, including mucus-secreting goblet cells. - Lamina propria beneath the epithelium is rich in immune cells. - Submucosa beneath mucosa. 5. The Function of the Mucus Layer - Acts as a physical barrier against pathogens. - Functions as a biochemical barrier by housing antimicrobial peptides and immunoglobulins. - Primarily composed of mucins secreted by goblet cells. - Goblet cells release mucins in response to stimuli, forming gel-like mucus. 6. Introduction to Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) - sIgA is the most abundant immunoglobulin in mucosal secretions. - Forms a protective barrier in the mucus layer. - Plays a critical role in immune exclusion by trapping and neutralizing pathogens. - Helps maintain non-inflammatory defense at mucosal surfaces. 7. Production of Secretory IgA - Plasma cells in the lamina propria secrete IgA. - IgA binds to receptors on epithelial cells and is transported across to the gut lumen. - sIgA to neutralize pathogens effectively within the mucus layer. 8. Functions of Secretory IgA in the Gut - Binds to antigens like bacterial walls, viruses, and toxins. - Traps antigens in the mucus to prevent adherence to epithelial cells. - Provides immune exclusion, reducing pathogen access to the gut lining. - Maintains mucosal barrier integrity to prevent inflammation. 9. Impact of Low sIgA Levels - Contributes to dysbiosis by allowing pathogenic bacteria to proliferate. - Intestinal hyperpermeability. - Increased risk of intestinal inflammation and infections. 10. Comparison with Other Immunoglobulins: IgG and IgM - IgG is most abundant in blood. - IgM is produced early in immune responses. - IgM can also be secreted into the gut lumen in IgA deficiency. 11. Immunoglobulin Supplements - IgG supplements. - Colostrum: IgG to help neutralize pathogens. - Supports gut barrier integrity. 12. Supporting Immunoglobulin Levels - Colostrum - Probiotics, prebiotics - Vitamin A - Zinc 13. Conclusion - Immunoglobulins, intestinal health, and immune balance. Thanks for tuning in! Ever heard of immunoglobulins? While colostrum is experiencing a renaissance, you should seriously weigh the immunoglobulin supplement versus colostrum benefits.Partly because colostrum is a LOWER potency option, that sometimes isn't even standardized (depending on the brand) to guarantee how helpful it will be.That said, immunoglobulins (aka. IgGs) can be incredibly helpful for things like leaky gut (gut permeability), histamine intolerance, recovering from a stomach bug or food poisoning, and supporting your immune system during cold + flu season.Plus, I'm going to share why I prefer immunoglobulin supplements over colostrum, what the difference is between the two, and how to use them. Also, I want to how you how to avoid the fake, over-hyped colostrum + immunoglobulin supplements found online (even on Amazon)!Let's dive in!In This Episode:How I learned about the amazing benefits of immunoglobulin supplementWhy you should use immunoglobulinsDifference between immunoglobulins and colostrum benefitsHow do immunoglobulins work?Benefits of immunoglobulinsHow to take an immunoglobulin supplementBest immunoglobulin supplement + where to get itQuotes“[Immunoglobulins] were traditionally used and still are actually for more diarrhea-dominant problems. So if you've got a lot of loose soft stools, diarrhea, or even something like inflammatory bowel disease.”“IgGs can be found in the serum of your blood, and they also can be found in the serum of the blood of cows. And so historically, when people supplement with colostrum, that's derived from dairy, and it contains IgGs. This episode unpacks the complex relationship between diet, the gut microbiome, and cancer prevention, emphasizing that the foods we eat might be only part of the story. While popular diets like the Mediterranean, Ketogenic, and Anti-inflammatory diets have shown benefits in supporting energy, reducing inflammation, and boosting mitochondrial function, their efficacy is heavily influenced by the diversity and health of our gut microbiome. Keystone strains—beneficial microbes that play an outsized role in gut stability—are often depleted due to modern lifestyle factors, including processed foods, overuse of antibiotics, and environmental toxins. Without these essential microbes, our bodies may struggle to metabolize nutrients effectively, regulate inflammation, and maintain a strong gut barrier, all of which are crucial in cancer prevention. As research increasingly highlights the microbiome's role in immune function and treatment efficacy, a new focus emerges: not just what we eat, but what our microbiome is equipped to digest. In this episode, we discuss practical strategies for nurturing gut diversity, from incorporating prebiotics and probiotics to leveraging fasting and mindful eating practices. By focusing on microbial health, we can better support the immune system, potentially enhancing our body's response to cancer therapies and overall resilience against disease.HIGHLIGHTS[03:43] What are Keystone Strains?[04:39] Metabolized Nutrients[08:33] Factors that Limit Your Response to a Robust Immune System[12:12] Rebuilding the Microbiome[16:21] Immunoglobulins in Supporting Your Immuno Response[18:10] Knowing what the Microbial Community Looks LikeSTEMREGEN: https://www.stemregen.co/products/stemregen/?afmc=beautifullybrokenCode: beautifullybrokenLightPathLED https://lightpathled.com/?afmc=BEAUTIFULLYBROKENCode: beautifullybroken (comes with free phone consultation)Silver Biotics Wound Healing Gel: https://bit.ly/3JnxyDDCode: BEAUTIFULLYBROKEN CONNECT WITH FREDDIE Check out my website and store: (http://www.beautifullybroken.world) Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/beautifullybroken.world/) YouTube: (https://www.youtube.com/@BeautifullyBrokenWorld)

Maternal human milk is the absolute best food for newborn nutrition that supports all of their accelerated growth in the first year. And although we have a basic understanding of the composition of human milk, every woman's breast milk has a different complexity when it comes to the nutritional content. But, you may be wondering, what exactly is breast milk composed of? For our 48th podcast episode, I review the general composition of human breast milk and what the variations are between preterm, term, and donor breast milk. I also discuss some of the anti-infective protective properties in maternal breast milk and how a preterm mother's milk has unique and complex properties that are lacking in donor breast milk. I discuss human milk fortification, the different formulations available, and why it is so important in our preterm population. I share why donor breast milk is used in preterm infants over formula and explain its protective mechanisms against necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Finally, I discuss how the pasteurization process, although important, impacts the composition of donor breast milk. I share why it is so crucial that mothers feel supported and are educated. Building trusting partnerships with NICU mothers will help to promote their milk expression, establish breastfeeding, and nurture the feelings of motherhood. A supportive environment coupled with education, has the potential to positively impact the mother's milk production in the NICU and beyond. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Simon: Hi Dr Cabral,I've listened to all your podcasts on fasting and detoxing and now do a daily 12-14hr fast and an (almost weekly) 1 day reset fast. I am curious though: as a Vata-Pita who is a bit too stressed and getting a bit less rest than I'd like to (though otherwise healthy), is a day's fasting putting my body under more stress than I should be? Also, rather than getting the ‘mental clarity' many speak of with fasting I tend to get brain fog and lethargy; aside from being inconvenient is this a concern and is there anything i can do to counter it without impacting the detox and autophagy benefits? Thirdly, I'd love to hear your thoughts on going lunch-to-lunch instead of dinner-to-dinner? I find skipping dinner easier and figure it means I'm not breaking my fast with a big meal close to bed and also benefit from a nights sleep on a very empty stomach. Thanks so much! Simon: Hi again, I have a couple more questions about the 1 day reset: would taking a typical ‘liver detox' supplement (milk thistle, dandelion, schisandra, etc) during the 1-day reset assist with liver detoxification? Also, is it ok to swap out some shakes with bone broth? Or even lemon/salt water if I'm not hungry? So many other questions but I'll leave it at that! Thank you for giving so much time and energy to the community! Lindsay: Hello. In today's podcast (7/11) you mentioned if you have low blood pressure you are unlikely able to drink as much water as you need without salt. Can you elaborate on that? I have low blood pressure and have a hard time drinking water. Wondering if there is a correlation. Meghan: Hi Dr C, I have been going back through previous shows and there seems to be a fair few that mention C Sections and after care with scar tissue and what not but I couldn't seem to find any that look at how to prep the body before having a C Section to help support both the Mum and baby? Also did you have any tips/thoughts about exposing the baby with the mothers bacteria to try and help support the babies microbiome that it will be missing not coming through the vaginal bacteria and anything else that a Mum can do in preparation of a C section birth? Thanks so much. Meghan: Hey Dr C, following on from my previous question about prepping for a C section. Is there anything in particular that I can do to reduce my chances of developing any post surgery blood clots? Thanks Nick: Hi Dr. Cabral! Love the podcast. I'm writing to you seeking help for my wife. She has a long history of mental illness(schizophrenia, psychosis, catatonia). She spent 3 weeks at the phsyciatric hospital last winter. Spent 6 months in phychosis without any help from medications. She started working with a functional medicine doctor last summer that ran a stool test and she suspected a parasite. She prescribed alinia and put her on sbi protect immunoglobins and within a couple days started coming out of psychosis. Over the last few months she started having another setback after trying to stop the sbi protect immunoglobins. Started getting brain on fire feeling and alot of head fullness and and pressure. We ran the big 5 and confirmed she has some elevated candida, aluminum, and tpo antibodies close to 500. She is currently on the parasite protocol. and then the limited yeast and heavy metal detox. She is about to undergo a lumbar puncture to test for nmdr receptor encephalitis. It's been a slow long process and would really appreciate any more wisdom you could give us on this issue. In today’s episode, we have Dr Matt Flory from the functional health team and a cause-based medicine practitioner. We talk about the brain gut connection and brain fog. We also discuss fibromyalgia, where that comes from and how we can help with that. This is a series, so it's going to be a short, sweet conversation, just enough for you to take back and apply Tell us about functional health team, and your cause-based medicine movement. (3:15) Functional health team was born out of that to be a support system. To elevate the level of support and the convenience of support that a person can access, you don't have to travel just to get your care from the nutritionist and physical fitness and doctor and for things from things like that. The cause-based medicine approach, is about the understanding, the acknowledgement that there's kind of a right way to go about things, and not just from a “I'm right in that person's wrong”, but from a physiologic biochemical, how the body works perspective. If you're going to try to influence your body's metabolism doing a nutritional program, you better well make sure that the GI tract is in a state where it's going to be able to receive, to digest, to absorb those nutrients.  What have you discovered about pathogenic bacteria? (12:12) Dr Matt mentioned he was lucky real early on to treat his first auto-immune case. It somebody who had been referred to be for a completely different reason, but he saw some external signs of inflammation, from a fairly young woman How he helped patients to realise that if you've been doing something for three and a half years and you still have these signs, then maybe you don't have the exact rate formula there. The discovery of an overgrowth of all the normal organisms. So instead of putting more probiotics in her body, we needed to peel off some of the normal microbiome and that level things out. Explain about the direct effects on neurons and nerve signaling the microbiome? (16:18) - There's a huge network of nerves of neurology in the gut and the connective tissue of the gut. So there could be a direct influence from this microbiome. Our hormones, our neuro-transmitters, these little molecules called neuropeptides.  - Another way that this happens, is by modulation of an immune response or through inflammation and it doesn't have to be severe inflammation. - How the word “stressors” could mean an actual injury. It could mean certainly the day to day stress that we have as part of our daily lives. But even more so they include things like organisms, infections, toxins? - We have certain areas within our body that their purpose is to regulate our relationship with our environment.  What do people often misunderstand about the immune system? (19:36) - Immunoglobulins sequester things like bacteria or toxins of that nature sequester it so that it doesn't get in. One of our five major classes of why white blood cells are called eosinophils. They live in higher concentrations in that second layer, deep in the gut, so that if the first layer of the gut has some failure, then we've got a backup system.  - In a nutshell, bacteria forms a huge part of our, the health and our wellness. We should have bacteria in our bodies, a nice balance of bacteria because they convert nutrients and make them usable for us and also helps with the balance in the body.  - Homeostasis is like a balance, like a pendulum, or a clock, If that pendulum is always pulled up over to one side, that set point is pulled way up over here, then the system, which is the clock is not going to be functional. - It doesn't always have to be right in the center, because if it gets pulled off a little bit and the system is in a positive environment of motion will then it's going to find its way, It's going to kind of be moving back and forth. What effect do chronic stress have on the body? (23:12)   - There is a constant battle between well and unwell, the season health. Stress and relaxation is always this battle back and forth everyday. When we tip over to one side and move that set point is when we allow ourselves to continue a condition that is prolonged and we move our set point to that balance starts to shift into whatever direction. - The reason we have chronic pain and chronic conditions because of our habits. - There's a great book called the telomere effect, talking about the disease span How do you make health a key part of your life and the way you operate? (36:53) - The brain affects our immune system or the gut affects our hormones and our immune system and the brain.  - Findings from thermography scans where they pick up the heat readings or inflammatory areas of the body shows that specific parts of the gums or teeth, there will be hot spots where there's inflammation. - Sugar intake is just plain and simple inflammatory number one, it has a leverage effect or it has multiple influences on the body. It's going to then have. A influence on that microbiome. And it's going to feed organisms that you don't want really growing there in good numbers.

Abstract: Human cysticercosis is a disease caused by larvae of the cestode Taenia solium. It is the most common cause of adult-acquired epilepsy world-wide where it exacts a debilitating toll on the health and well-being of affected communities. It is commonly assumed that the major symptoms associated with cysticercosis are a result of the direct presence of larvae in the brain. As a result, the possible effect of peripherally located larvae on the central nervous system are not well understood. To address this question, we utilised the Taenia crassiceps intra-peritoneal murine model of cysticercosis, where larvae are restricted to the peritoneal cavity. In this model, previous research has observed behavioural changes in rodents but not the development of seizures. Here we used ELISAs, immunoblotting and the Evans Blue test for blood-brain barrier permeability to explore the central effects of peripheral infection of mice with Taenia crassiceps. We identified high levels of parasite-targeting immunoglobulins in the serum of Taenia crassiceps infected mice. We show that the Taenia crassciceps larvae themselves also contain and release host immunoglobulins over time. Additionally, we describe, for the first time, significantly increased levels of IgG within the hippocampi of infected mice, which are accompanied by changes in blood-brain barrier permeability. However, these Taenia crassiceps induced changes were not accompanied by alterations to the levels of proinflammatory, pro-seizure cytokines in the hippocampus. These findings contribute to the understanding of systemic and neuroimmune responses in the Taenia crassiceps model of cysticercosis, with implications for the pathogenesis of human cysticercosis. B., Macpherson, A. J., Powrie, F., Lam, L. H. Abstract: Background: Identifying which taxa are targeted by immunoglobulins can uncover important host-microbe interactions. Immunoglobulin binding of commensal taxa can be assayed by sorting bound bacteria from samples and using amplicon sequencing to determine their taxonomy, a technique most widely applied to study Immunoglobulin A (IgA-Seq). Previous experiments have scored taxon binding in IgA-Seq datasets by comparing abundances in the IgA bound and unbound sorted fractions. However, as these are relative abundances, such scores are influenced by the levels of the other taxa present and represent an abstract combination of these effects. Diversity in the practical approaches of prior studies also warrants benchmarking of the individual stages involved. Here, we provide a detailed description of the design strategy for an optimised IgA-Seq protocol. Combined with a novel scoring method for IgA-Seq datasets that accounts for the aforementioned effects, this platform enables accurate identification and quantification of commensal gut microbiota targeted by host immunoglobulins. Results: Using germ-free and Rag1-/- mice as negative controls, and a strain-specific IgA antibody as a positive control, we determine optimal reagents and fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) parameters for IgA-Seq. Using simulated IgA-Seq data, we show that existing IgA-Seq scoring methods are influenced by pre-sort relative abundances. This has consequences for the interpretation of case-control studies where there are inherent differences in microbiota composition between groups. We show that these effects can be addressed using a novel scoring approach based on posterior probabilities. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of both the IgA-Seq protocol and probability-based scores by examining both novel and published data from in vivo disease models. Conclusions: We provide a detailed IgA-Seq protocol to accurately isolate IgA-bound taxa from intestinal samples. Using simulated and experimental data, we demonstrate novel probability-based scores that adjust for the compositional nature of relative abundance data to accurately quantify taxon-level IgA binding. All scoring approaches are made available in the IgAScores R package. These methods should improve the generation and interpretation of IgA-Seq datasets and could be applied to study other immunoglobulins and sample types. Copy rights belong to original authors. Immunoglo-what? Immunoglobins are a technical term for antibodies. They are your front-line soldiers on the battlefield whenever an antigen is introduced. It could be a virus, fungus, bacteria, or synthetic environmental toxins.  For many people on fad diets or restrictive diets which make the effects of iron and PUFA overload worse, the immune system is already running on overdrive. Taking exogenous immunoglobulins such as the Ultimate IgG product from Just Thrive can help to take the burden off of the immune system in various ways as microbiologist Kiran Krishnan explains in this interview.

Immunoglobulins reside in the lining of your intestinal tract and help to bind, neutralize, and deactivate irritants and toxins in the gut. When your immune system and/or gut is compromised, it is helpful to supplement with immunoglobulins. This additional support helps to protect your immune system from getting triggered by these various irritants. Research tells us that immunoglobulin supplementation can help those who struggle with SIBO, IBS, leaky gut, Histamine issues, H. Pylori, inflammation issues and more. They’ve been shown to benefit those who have tried many other therapies and failed to see results. The best way to trial immunoglobulins is to start an initial assessment for 2-3 weeks. You may plateau around 8-9 weeks. Maintain the plateau for 1-2 months and attempt to wean off or find the minimal effective dose. They can also be used when in a flare.   The consumption of dairy products has been a mainstay for as long as mankind has been able to capture and milk animals of all kinds. Sheep, goats, cows, bison, water buffalo, donkeys and horses. All are still milked to this day. There may be others. These are the ones of which I am aware. I want to talk about this tradition that has helped our species thrive and develop over the centuries and millennia.  But first, I want to take that blessed moment to say welcome to all the new listeners and welcome back to you veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by the homestead every week. I appreciate you all so much. I’m so excited to share with you what’s going on in our neck of the woods this week. Today’s Show Homestead Life Updates Why We Drink Raw Milk Traditional Kefir Recipe Homestead Life Updates Oh my gosh, is it hot where you are? Whew!! We’ve been experiencing a real heat wave here. Temperatures that are normal for late July and August. Thank goodness that we will be back to normal for next week. Highs in the high 70’s and low 80’s. Today is great. The 90-degree days drained the energy right out of me. I expect that in the middle of summer. But come on, it’s still 3 weeks until the summer solstice. Garden and Orchard Speaking of draining energy. The garden is burning up. Well is would be if we weren’t diligently watering every day. The orchard too. And the weeds are still progressively taking over. This time of year I’m really pressed for time. Milking twice a day. Making cheese. Going to the Farmer’s Market and on and on. As I’ve said before, the garden gets pushed down the list of priorities. This too shall change in the future. It takes a lot to get a business off the ground. Once we are more established, we can let up a little bit, I think. Creamery A little progress has been made on the creamery. It is still creeping along compared to the plan that Scott originally made, but it is what it is and we persevere. It’s the journey that is important. It’s the system that we are setting in place that is important. Goals come and go, but the system remains. Animals We still have a couple of baby bulls for sale. If you are looking to improve the beef and dairy genetics of your herd, the Normande cow is a good bet. Visit our website at www.peacefulheartfarm.com and go to the contact page and let us know of your interest. We also have a 1-year-old and a proven 2-year-old bull that are available. As we move to AI for our very small herd, we no longer need bulls. One less thing to keep up with. We have our ground beef on sale $6.00 for one pound, $250 for 50 pounds and $500 for 100 pounds. We also have a few – very few – lambs available. Again, go to the website and let us know of your interest in a whole or half lamb. $380 for a whole lamb and $200 for a half. www.peacefulheartfarm.com Alright that’s it for homestead updates. Let’s get on to the topic at hand. Why We Drink Raw Milk I’m going to talk about why we consume dairy products; the benefits. Our dairy products come straight from our grass-fed cows with no alteration from their live state. It’s all about the nutrition. Traditional foods raised using traditional methods produces that traditional robust health of days gone by. I’ll get to the specific health benefits in a moment. If you’ve been told that drinking raw milk is dangerous, you’ll be surprised to know that you’ve been misled.  The truth about raw milk? An extensive look into research and claims made by the FDA and CDC related to raw milk being dangerous have been found to be completely unwarranted. It actually benefits your body in many ways, and although it might have earned a reputation among some for being dangerous, you shouldn’t miss out on all this amazing superfood has to offer because raw milk benefits are truly impressive. What is “raw milk” exactly? It’s milk that comes from grass-fed cows, is unpasteurized and unhomogenized. This means raw milk contains all of its natural enzymes, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals — making it what many refer to as a “complete food.” Eggs fall into the “complete food” category also. Everything needed for growth and health is contained in the package. No need for sterilization or added sugar. But can’t raw milk cause problems due to the risk of consuming bacteria? The risk of this happening is very, very low. In fact, according to medical researcher Dr. Ted Beals, M.D., you are 35,000 times more likely to get sick from other foods than you are from raw milk. Reference in the show notes. You can get sick from consuming any food. Your risk of illness from raw milk is quite small. The CDC reports that there are an estimated 48 million foodborne illnesses diagnosed each year. Yes, your heard that right. 48 million. Of these 48 million illnesses, only about 42 (about 0.0005 percent!) each year are due to consumption of fresh, unprocessed (raw) milk. Dr. Chris Kesser did a thorough investigation to get the true impact of raw milk illness and death (as the CDC makes it sound inevitable). He found that your chances of becoming hospitalized from a bacterial illness caused by raw milk is three times less than your chance of dying in a plane crash. The statistics indicate that most accusations and concerns over raw milk have been overstated, and because of that its health benefits remain underrated. Raw milk benefits are numerous and can help address a large number of nutritional deficiencies that millions of people, especially those eating the standard American diet, are currently experiencing. For instance, raw milk benefits allergies and skin, all while containing beneficial nutrients available in a living product. Five Benefits of Raw Milk 1. Reduces Allergies Studies now suggest that children who drink raw milk are 50 percent less likely to develop allergies and 41 percent less likely to develop asthma compared to children who don’t. A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology involved 8,000 children with various diets, and one of the conclusions that researchers made was that by drinking raw milk, children experienced “naturally immunizing” effects. As documented on the Real Milk.com website, many other studies carried out over the past century have shown that raw milk benefits and supports children’s growth and development in other ways too. Examples are: increased immunity against infections, dental health boosted and support for skeletal growth. Again, reference in the show notes. You might be wondering: How can raw milk reduce allergies, and isn’t dairy tied to high rates of intolerance or sensitivities? Nutrients like probiotics, vitamin D and immunoglobulins (antibodies) found in raw milk naturally boost the immune system and reduce the risk of allergies in both children and adults. Enzymes found in raw milk help with digestion but are often reduced or destroyed during pasteurization. Without those enzymes, lactose intolerance is much more likely. 2. Helps Improve Skin Health Dairy might have a bad reputation when it comes to causing or worsening acne and skin inflammation, but this is far from the case with raw milk. As I’ve said, the benefits of raw milk are numerous, but surprisingly one of the most common reasons that people consume it is to benefit their skin. The success stories of people consuming raw milk to improve conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne are very widely reported. Raw milk benefits the skin for the following reasons: It contains healthy fats: Because raw milk contains large amounts of healthy saturated fats and omega-3 fats, it supports skin hydration.  It supplies probiotics: Probiotics in raw milk can kill off or balance bad bacteria in your gut, which can dramatically affect the health of your skin. Research shows that inflammation and unbalanced gut flora contribute to skin issues such as acne and eczema. 3. Helps Prevent Nutrient Deficiencies  According to the USDA, nearly 300 calories a day in the average American’s diet (out of a total 2,076 calories) can be attributed to added sugars or sweeteners. In comparison, nutrient-rich foods like raw dairy, fruits and vegetables only contribute about 424 calories. One serving of raw milk contains about 400 milligrams of calcium, 50 milligrams of magnesium and 500 milligrams of potassium. These minerals are vitally important for cellular function, hydration, building bone density, blood circulation, detoxification, muscle health and metabolism. 4. Can Be Used to Make Probiotic Foods Probiotics are microorganisms that line your gut and support nutrient absorption. They also help protect you from foreign invaders like E. coli and parasites. The best way to include probiotics in your diet is to get them in their most natural state, which includes raw milk products, such as cheese, kefir and yogurt. Real, raw and organic probiotic yogurt, cheeses and kefir have been consumed by some of the healthiest populations living around the world for thousands of years. Some disorders probiotic foods are known to help with include: Diarrhea Inflammatory bowel disease Irritable bowel syndrome Skin infections Weakened immune system Urinary track infections Vaginal yeast infection 5. Doesn’t Contain Added Sugar or Synthetic Ingredients In addition to pasteurization, conventional milk also usually undergoes a homogenization process. Homogenization is a high-pressure process that breaks down fat into tiny particles — however, fat subjected to high heat and pressure becomes oxidized and rancid. Many low-fat dairy products also have thickening agents added to make up for lost texture. Raw milk needs no added thickeners or shelf-stabilizers and also doesn’t contain added sugar or flavors. Most foods have some levels of natural sugar, including raw dairy, which has the type called lactose. The natural sugar in dairy is balanced with other nutrients and therefore not a concern (even healthy for you in moderation). Raw Milk Nutrition Facts Raw milk is truly one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world and has a nutritional profile unlike any other food. I understand if you’ve been cautious in the past about drinking raw milk because of all the negative media it might have earned. Let me help ease your mind. As a species we have been drinking this luscious, delectable beverage for thousands upon thousands of years. Today more and more people are drinking raw milk. We are slowly getting back to wholesome, unadulterated food that has served us for millennia. Over 10 million Americans now drink raw milk on a regular basis. They do so because of the benefits which include: Healthier skin, hair and nails Nutrient absorption Stronger immune system Reduced allergies Increased bone density Neurological support Weight loss Help building lean muscle mass Better digestion What exactly makes raw milk such an incredible superfood? Let’s take a look at its unique nutritional profile, and it will become clear. Raw Milk Benefits: Nutritional Profile of Raw Milk Fat-Soluble Vitamins A, D and K2 Because raw milk comes from cows or goats grazing on grass, research studies have shown that it contains a higher level of heart-healthy, fat-soluble vitamins than milk that comes from factory-farm cows. These vitamins support the brain and nervous system and are crucial for development, focus and brain function. Fat-soluble vitamins also support bone density and help naturally balance hormones. Short Chain Fatty Acids, CLA and Omega-3s In addition to being high in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, raw milk from grass-fed animals is a rich source of butyrate, a short chain fatty acid that’s widely known to control health issues related to inflammation, slow metabolism and stress resistance. Additionally, raw, grass-fed milk is packed with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has been tied to cancer prevention, healthier cholesterol levels and can even help reduce body fat. Essential Minerals and Electrolytes: Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium Raw milk is one of the highest sources of minerals and electrolytes, of which many people need more. Whey Protein and Immunoglobulins By far, the best-tasting curds and whey protein come from our raw milk. CHEESE. Also, whey protein is fantastic for anyone who’s looking to burn fat and build or retain lean muscle. Whey is high in the following enzymes: alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, bovine serum albumin and immunoglobulin. Probiotics: Kefir, Cheese and Yogurt Probiotics are only found in small amounts in raw milk, but when you ferment raw milk to make foods like kefir, yogurt or cheese, the good bacteria dramatically increase. In fact, there are no other foods in the world as naturally high in probiotics as cultured dairy products. And these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to raw milk benefits. Raw Milk Benefits vs. Conventional Milk Let’s compare. Dairy products have gotten a bad rap over the years, but this is actually mostly due to the pasteurization process. When milk is pasteurized, it destroys many of the nutrients that make raw milk beneficial. Why is pasteurization even performed in the first place then? Because it exposes milk to very high temperatures, it can also kill harmful bacteria that are possibly able to make their way into the milk. However, as I mentioned before, it’s very rare for these types of bacteria to be found in milk to begin with. There are other options to ensure the bad bacteria doesn’t get into the milk in the first place. Key nutrients and enzymes are greatly reduced during the pasteurization process. If you consider the fact that many of these nutrients are not only reduced, but altered from their original states, you can understand that some of these nutrients are completely unavailable for your body to use and can be very difficult to digest for many people. Allergies and lactose intolerance are higher with pasteurization as well. Another major negative of pasteurization is that it destroys the digestive enzymes needed to break down and absorb certain nutrients. In the previously mentioned study, researchers found lactase (the enzyme in dairy) levels are greatly reduced with pasteurization, which is one explanation as to why so many people are lactose-intolerant. A survey conducted by the Weston A. Price Foundation found that of 700 families interviewed, amazingly about 80 percent of those diagnosed with lactose intolerance stopped having symptoms when they switched to raw milk. Raw Milk Nutrients To put things into perspective, according to medical studies, the following nutrients in raw milk are 100% fully active and during pasteurization they are altered or destroyed: Vitamin A, 35% reduction; Vitamin C, 25-77% reduction; Vitamin E, 14% reduction; Iron 66% reduction; Zinc, 70% reduction; B-Complex Vitamins, 38% reduction; Calcium, 21% reduction; Enzymes, 100% destroyed; Immunoglobulins, damaged; Whey Protein, denatured. Again, all of these nutrients are 100% active in raw, unpasteurized milk. Pasteurized milk is a lesser product. As I mentioned earlier, they end up adding stuff to a product that was perfect before pasteurization – unless contaminated by careless practices. How to Make Traditional Kefir Kefir is a fermented milk drink similar to a thin yogurt that is made from kefir grains, a specific type of mesophilic symbiotic culture. The drink originated in the Caucasus, Eastern Europe and Russia, where it is prepared by inoculating cow, goat, or sheep milk with kefir grains. These instructions will be for cow’s milk kefir. Milk kefir is not only easy to make, it is a delicious, probiotic-rich, versatile beverage your whole family can enjoy. This recipe uses the direct starter culture. You will not have to maintain kefir grains. Perhaps you can learn that a little later. What You Need Equipment: Glass or plastic container Plastic, wood, or stainless-steel stirring utensil Coffee filter or cloth Rubber band to secure the cover Ingredients: 1-quart raw cow milk (Needs to be very fresh. Kick It With Donna episode 50 – Freedom from Judgement Do you ever tire of feeling judged?  Susan Johnson is my guest today. She talks about her journey of freeing herself from judgment. Show Notes: My guest today is Susan Johnson. She is a health coach for her business called Invigorated. She also works for the Thermography Center of Dallas. Susan’s son Josh was born weighing 3lbs. 4 oz. Susan breastfed him for fourteen months. When she stopped, he had digestive issues that her pediatrician insisted was due to Josh’s low birth weight.  Susan was not happy with this explanation and became an advocate for her sons health. She discovered that Josh was intolerant of milk and soy.  Finding things her son could eat without becoming sick was her new norm. Sending Josh to school didn’t work out well because he was sick all the time.  Anyone with small children knows that kids get every bug known to mankind at school and then come home to give it to mom and dad.  This made play dates and extra curricular activities impossible.  Home schooling was the only option Susan had. She eventually found out through an allergist/immunologist that Josh had X-Linked agammaglobulinemia.  Yes, that’s a long name.  This is an inherited disorder in which a person has low levels of protective immune system proteins called immunoglobulins.  Immunoglobulins are a type of antibody.  Low levels of these antibodies make you more likely to get infections. There is always something good to be had in bad situations.  Josh is now 20 years old and has completed three years of college.  Life goes on for him albeit a little different from everyone else.

Endotoxemia. A fundamental driver of chronic disease. What is it? And more importantly, what do we do to address it? In my podcast with Dr. Jill Carnahan this month, she unleashes a torrent of compelling science and clinical savvy on all things endotoxemia. From heart disease and diabetes to autoimmunity (genetic or acquired) and mast cell activation, Dr. Carnahan is clear that pathological intestinal permeability (she discusses testing, but at this point in her career believes most everyone who sees her with chronic disease has IP) drives inflammation by allowing excess microbial endotoxins- primarily as lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- to enter circulation. Focused on root cause functional medicine (toxins, diet, infection, genetics), she concurrently heals the gut to drop the inflammatory burden. A key intervention for Jill is sugar-free, GMO-free, serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI), and we spend quite a bit of time on why SBI is crucial. With 43 human trials behind it, if you are not using SBI yet, you’ll be compelled to start, I suspect. We also have a fun dialogue on the role of fatty acids and toll-like receptor activation, connected directly to LPS. Jill shares a handful of very compelling case vignettes AND talks candidly about how she set up an extremely successful functional medicine practice and positioned herself as an expert in the field. And let me know: will you be changing how you prescribe high fat diets based on the research we discuss?
