When you finally receive that long-awaited email announcing tenure, you expect it to change everything—less stress, more freedom, and the chance to finally pursue the big dreams you've been putting on hold. But what happens when the reality doesn't live up to the hype? In this episode of the Mid-Career Series, I share my own post-tenure story. Instead, I found myself stuck at the top of the promotion ladder in the middle of a financial crisis, still overworked and unsure of what was next. If you've ever thought tenure would be the turning point that finally allowed you to regain control of your academic career, this conversation may feel uncomfortably familiar. In 2013, Gregg Renfrew founded Beautycounter—the beauty brand that pioneered what we know today as the clean beauty movement. The brand gained a well-respected reputation for its commitment to using safe ingredients in its products and for refusing to include any formulas that contained questionable or harmful chemicals. Renfrew's commitment to customer health and her advocacy for cosmetic regulation set her apart from her competitors at a time when clean beauty was just an idea, not an entire industry. She last joined us in 2019, before the company's sale to a private equity firm in a deal that valued the brand at $1 billion. Since then, she's had to make several pivots—from being asked to step down as CEO to leaving her own company to watching it go into foreclosure. Her latest pivot has involved starting a new company with the same commitment to clean beauty called Counter, and she's back to tell us all about the new venture.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

David Clancy is a world-class sports physio and author who's taken more than a few sharp turns in his career. He's had to face the same questions many of us wrestle with: Do I stay in the safe lane or risk starting over? How do I manage different passions without spreading myself too thin? What do I do with that voice in my head telling me I don't belong? In this episode, David and I dig into the practical side of career pivots and personal growth, including: •The real reasons people avoid changing direction—even when they know they're unhappy. •How to make a career shift without blowing up everything you've built. •Why imposter phenomenon can be a sign you're on the right track, and how to keep it from paralyzing you. •The challenge of chasing multiple passions and what filters help you decide what's worth pursuing. •How relationships—not networking, but genuine ones—end up making or breaking your next move. •The skill of listening, and why it matters more than being the smartest person in the room. This isn't theory. It's a conversation packed with examples you can relate to if you've ever thought about pivoting, felt stuck in a role you've outgrown, or struggled with the noise of self-doubt.
Dr. Salvatore Forcina's story reads like a movie. Born in war-torn Italy, he arrived in America at 28 with only $40 in his pocket—determined to become a doctor. Against language barriers, setbacks, and poverty, he rose to serve as Chief of Surgery in New Jersey hospitals, treating thousands of patients. In this conversation, we explore: The resilience it takes to chase a dream against all odds The sacrifices behind a lifetime of healing others Why his memoir, The American Doctor, is a testament to perseverance and purpose

In this episode, Nico takes you inside the ugliest closing he's faced yet — a 13-unit deal in Lakeland, Florida that nearly fell apart multiple times. What looked simple on paper turned into a brutal capital raise, endless back-and-forth with lenders and title companies, and a closing process that stretched out over a week of chaos. You'll hear the unfiltered truth about raising $220K that felt like pulling teeth, what it's like when your team can't deliver, and how even experienced operators get blindsided. This isn't the glossy “We Closed!” story you see on Instagram — this is the grind of real multifamily investing. If you've ever wondered what it actually takes to survive in this business, this episode is your reality check.
