The Atlanta Braves completed a sweep of the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Truist Park on Thursday night. The game featured a matchup between Chris Sale and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and while the latter threw a great game, it was the 2024 NL Cy Young Award winner who stood out with a complete-game shutout. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman talk about what was a career-defining outing from Chris Sale against the Dodgers, one that felt very much like a throwback performance from starting pitchers of old. They discuss the excitement of hopefully getting to see Sale pitch in the postseason again after he was injured during the Braves' last playoff run and whether he can possibly add another Cy Young to his trophy case. Jake and Jordan also talk about Tarik Skubal returning to Detroit this weekend to face his old club, Shohei Ohtani eyeing a return to the mound on Sunday and why the Dodgers losing Roki Sasaki to the IL comes with unfortunate timing. The guys then welcome Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers to discuss his incredible turnaround this season, playing behind Jacob Misiorowski and getting Aaron Judge out as a position-player pitcher. They then close the show by making their picks for this week's The Good, The Bad and The Uggla. 1:41 - The Opener: Chris Sale's complete-game shutout 16:59 - Could the Braves and Dodgers meet in October? 24:09 - Skubal, Ohtani and Roki updates 33:36 - Jake Bauers joins the show 49:29 - Playing with Jacob Misiorowski 58:40 - The Good, The Bad & The Uggla Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

What happens when a PA decides to add an MBA to their career? In this episode, I'm joined by Matthew (Matt) Wetherhold, MS, PA-C, DFAAPA who shares why he decided to pursue an MBA at this stage of his career and how he's using it to explore new opportunities, grow as a leader, and think differently about what the next 10 to 15 years of his career could look like. We also talk about how his perspective on financial independence (FI) has evolved over the years. After initially discovering the FIRE movement and thinking early retirement was the goal, he realized that he actually enjoys the work he does. Today, he sees financial independence less as a path to quitting work and more as a way to create greater flexibility and make career decisions based on what interests and challenges him. As PAs, we have unique opportunities to continue learning, take on new challenges, move into leadership, and change directions throughout our careers. This conversation explores what it can look like to intentionally build a career around growth, opportunity, and the options you want for your future. In this episode, we discuss: Why he decided to pursue an MBA as a physician associate / physician assistant What made this the right time in his career to go back to school How an MBA can support career growth and leadership development His interest in taking on more leadership roles How he sees his PA career evolving over the next 10 to 15 years Why a PA career doesn't have to follow one linear path How financial independence changed his approach to work and career decisions Why he no longer sees early retirement as the ultimate goal How financial flexibility can create more opportunities to pursue work that interests and challenges you The value of making career decisions based on more than just the paycheck Whether you're considering going back to school, interested in leadership, or simply thinking about what you want the next chapter of your PA career to look like, this episode will encourage you to think more broadly about the possibilities, options, and freedom available to you through the journey along the way to financial independence as a physician associate / physician assistant. Jimmy Jenkins, before writing stories and books, earned his law degree from the University of Maryland. After graduating law school, Jimmy undertook a commitment to public service by becoming a criminal prosecutor for several years. Jimmy wrote Green Rush Fever because he felt a need to tell the story about how his family's small farming operation entered the nascent Florida hemp industry in 2019. Aside from his analysis about growing hemp, in Green Rush Fever Jimmy also writes about his family's tradition of having a strong conviction in their faith and a tenacious belief in the power of having the robust loving support of one's family members. "I was working in New York City for over 6 years as a criminal prosecutor when my father got ill. My wife and I decided to move our family to Florida temporarily to take care of him. Having that time with him allowed us to realize that there was a lot of life that I had missed while chasing the brass ring in NYC. I knew I wanted to use my skillset but not chasing that hot-shot trial lawyer lifestyle. I found a really great position as lawyer-editor with a small publishing company in Florida.  It was more of a consultant position. And it was like working with friends and assisting them in what they're trying to do."

America needs more power. Data centers are accelerating demand, utilities are planning billions of dollars in new infrastructure, and households will ultimately help pay for much of it.But what if we invested some of that money in the households themselves?Ari Matusiak, co-founder and CEO of Rewiring America, makes the case that homes can become a meaningful part of America's energy infrastructure—and that households should be compensated for the value they provide to the grid.In this wide-ranging conversation, Ari and Nico explore the rise of Homegrown Energy, why the old equilibrium between utilities and customers is breaking down, how hyperscalers could help fund household energy upgrades, and where regulators and utilities are already testing what's possible. They also get into the harder question underneath all of it: who gets to participate in the value created as we build out the grid? For Ari, the opportunity is bigger than electrification. If households can provide real value to the grid, the question becomes whether we continue treating them primarily as customers, or start investing in them as part of the solution. That could create a very different deal: more capacity for a power-hungry economy, more flexibility for the grid, and tangible value flowing back to the households helping make it possible. Are there other technologies you've scouted on the frontlines of the Clean Energy Revolution that you think we should be covering here on SunCast?Hit us up - team@suncast.me with your feedback & recommendations. If you want to connect with today's guest, you'll find links to their contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://suncast.media/episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America! You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.suncast.media/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today's guest and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 950 other founder stories and startup advice at www.suncast.media.We'd love if you'd leave us a 5 ⭐ rating & review and it's never been easier: https://www.ratethispodcast.com/suncastSubscribe to Valence, our weekly LinkedIn Newsletter, and learn the elements of compelling storytelling: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/valence-content-that-connects-7145928995363049472/You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalus(00:00) The Fastest Path to Power(00:12) Meet Ari Matusiak, Rewiring America's Founder(03:17) The Thread Behind a Career of Big Problems(09:42) Winning an Affordable Housing Bond in Rhode Island(22:47) Rewiring America and the 42% Emissions Insight(27:06) Reframing Households as Energy Infrastructure(29:57) Why the Grid's Political Economy Just Shifted(41:13) Energy Value vs. Community Benefit Payouts(42:30) Building the Missing Middle Market(48:47) The Slow Start of Homegrown Energy(55:31) Data Centers, Grid Distortion, and Homeowners(1:00:25) Illinois as the First Domino(1:05:23) Answering the Subsidy Critique(1:15:13) Dignity, Shared Winning, and What's Hardest

During August, the Motherkind team and I try to practise what we preach by slowing down, taking some time off and making the juggle just a little easier over the summer holidays. So, throughout the month, we're bringing you some of our most listened-to episodes of the year so far. What if becoming a mother didn't make you less ambitious, less capable or less valuable at work, but actually gave you skills that could make you better at your job? This week, we're revisiting one of our most listened-to Motherkind episodes of the year, and it's a conversation I think every working mother needs to hear.I'm joined by Vanessa Kingori, who became the first woman in British Vogue's history to become Publishing Director and found herself navigating pregnancy and new motherhood while leading one of the most powerful media brands in the world.Vanessa shares the extraordinary pressure she felt when she became pregnant in such a senior position, including being told that her pregnancy was exactly why businesses were reluctant to put women into these roles. Rather than hiding it, Vanessa did the opposite: she became deliberately visible and set out to make things easier for the women who would come after her.We talk about why working mothers so often feel they're failing at both work and home, even when they're actually performing brilliantly. Vanessa explains why motherhood can make women better at time management, decision-making, prioritisation and leadership — and why businesses that underestimate mothers are missing some of their greatest talent. We also get practical about the juggle: asking for help, having honest conversations with your partner about the division of labour, building your village and surrounding yourself with people who support the life you're trying to create. And Vanessa shares a powerful reminder for any mother questioning her career, ambition or identity: you don't have to choose one version of yourself. You can be ambitious and deeply present. A leader and a mother. Career-driven and family-focused. As Vanessa puts it, she's a better mother because she works — and a better business leader because she's a mother. This is a conversation about working motherhood, career confidence, ambition, mum guilt and redefining what success looks like after children.

have a wonderful repeat guest, Anna Runyan, this week on the show! I always learn something from Anna, and this show is no different. I see Anna as my brave big sister in business, and she has taken brave leaps personally, too. For example, as you will hear, she moved with her family to Europe for a year, which is on my bucket list! Either way, Anna represents not following the traditional path to me. She is someone that took an intentional look at her life and work and purposefully decided to build her personal and professional life on her own terms. When I was pregnant with my first child, like so many of us, I tried to fit my growing family into my existing work instead of the other way around. Anna was like, “Nope!” This isn't for me. There must be a better way. And she found it and now helps others with that same dream. So, if you are a closet dreamer of a better way to live and work, this show is for you!During our podcast, Anna and I chatted about:The story behind her company Classy Career GirlHer learnings traveling nomadically as a family and when she realized she wanted to come back to the U.S. and settle in FloridaHow did Imposter Syndrome or (phenomenon) show up for Anna as she was building her businessWhat Classy Career Girl offers and what's next for her companyHere is more about Anna:Anna is the creator of The Corporate Rescue Plan and The Classy Career Girl® Certified Career Coach Program. She is a former corporate consultant turned entrepreneur. Her website was picked as one of Forbes Top 100 Websites For Women and one of Forbes 35 Most Influential Career Sites. She's been featured on Fox, The Wall Street Journal and People StyleWatch magazine. Anna was nominated as San Diego Magazine's Woman of the Year and her podcast was named as Yahoo's 10 Best Podcasts.Prior to founding Classy Career Girl in 2010, Anna worked for Booz Allen Hamilton where she spent 8 years managing a client delivery team and managed a $75M annual U.S. Navy budget. She was a Certified Adjunct Instructor at Booz Allen Hamilton and a Professor of Management at DeVry University. She received her MBA from University of California, San Diego and after a year of traveling around Europe with her husband and three daughters, she now lives in Florida. Before we begin, please be sure to share this show with a family member, friend or colleague. When his shifts were cut during the pandemic, he took a telemedicine job to pay the bills and ended up loving it. Suneer Chander is an emergency physician who co-wrote the article "Telemedicine as a career, not a side gig," published on KevinMD. He makes the case that telemedicine is the most impactful public health advance to come out of the pandemic, yet most doctors treat it as weekend income instead of the career patients actually need it to be. You will hear why so few physicians work in it full time, what a day of asynchronous care in sexual health, obesity medicine, and psychiatry really looks like, and the red flags that signal a company using your license rather than respecting it. Chander argues the field needs committed clinical leaders, not moonlighters. You will hear which doctors are the best fit, the red flags to watch for, and how Chander says to weigh an offer beyond the paycheck. Partner with me on the KevinMD platform. What happens when you reach a certain level of success and realize the financial strategies you've been using may no longer fit where you are today? In this episode of Capability Amplifier, I sit down with Dana Cornell, founder of Cornell Capital Holdings, for a fascinating conversation about how successful business owners can think differently about taxes, investing, income, risk, and protecting what they've built.Dana has seen both sides of the financial world. He managed more than $1.4 billion at Morgan Stanley, served hundreds of clients, and eventually gained access to the advanced planning strategies being used with families at a very different level of wealth. What he saw changed the direction of his career.Dana realized there was an enormous difference between traditional wealth management and the coordinated approach available to ultra-wealthy families. Eventually, that gap became big enough that he decided to leave and build something different.Dana and I dug into what he learned behind the scenes, the mistakes successful founders often make with their own money, and why your financial strategy needs to evolve as your business and wealth become more complex. In this episode, Dana and I break down:Why Dana walked away from a $1.4 billion practice at Morgan Stanley? The 1% advisory fee that may actually be costing you closer to 20%Why do the ultra-wealthy keep most of their liquid capital out of stocks and bonds? What founders should understand about private and pre-IPO investing? Why the tax planning on a business or real estate sale has to happen before you sell? The risk most wealthy families overlook, and it isn't the marketEveryone has a CPA, an attorney, and an advisor. Almost nobody has a quarterbackOne of my biggest takeaways from this conversation is that financial complexity requires coordination. You can have a great CPA, a great attorney, and a great financial advisor. But if nobody is looking at the entire picture and taking responsibility for how all those pieces work together, opportunities can easily get missed. For successful founders and business owners, this is an important conversation about making sure the wealth you've worked so hard to create is being managed with the same level of intention you bring to your businessTake Dana's free financial diagnostic quiz (10 questions or less — get your wealth score and freedom score): https://cchquiz.comWant Dana's tax calculator? Today on The Gist, guest host Scott introduces a 2022 conversation between Mike Pesca and former US Senator Al Franken, who discusses his return to stand-up comedy and looks back at his tenure in the Senate. Franken examines how his background as a comedy writer and performer informed his sharp, forensic approach to committee hearings, including his memorable question during Jeff Sessions' confirmation that ultimately led to the Attorney General's recusal, and his viral exchange with Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos over growth versus proficiency. He and Mike also discuss the cynical comedic worldview of Lindsey Graham, the breakdown of cross-aisle Senate comity, and Franken's proposed reforms to fix the modern filibuster. Nearly twelve years after the Thanksgiving 1985 bombing at Hilltop Mobile Home Park, investigators received a tip that shifted their attention to Michael Roy Toney, a 31-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history. After a five-month investigation and grand jury proceedings, Toney was indicted for the bombing deaths of Joe Blount, his 15-year-old daughter Angela Blount, and his 18-year-old nephew Michael Columbus.Toney's capital murder trial began in early May 1999 in Fort Worth. Susan and Robert Blount testified and nearly 80 pieces of physical evidence recovered from the destroyed trailer and the victims were presented. Prosecutors argued that the Blount family had not been the intended target and that Toney had mistakenly placed the briefcase bomb outside the wrong trailer. The prosecution's case relied heavily on testimony from Toney's former wife and estranged friend, who both testified that they accompanied Toney to a business beside Hilltop Mobile Home Park on Thanksgiving Day 1985 and that Toney carried a briefcase away from his truck and returned without it. The defense challenged both accounts and emphasized that there was no physical evidence presented at trial connecting Toney to the bomb. They also returned attention to former Hilltop resident Mikey Huff, who had been investigated repeatedly over the years. On May 20, 1999, after approximately four hours of deliberation, the jury found Michael Roy Toney guilty of capital murder. During the punishment phase, more witnesses provided damning testimony against him.If you have any information about the murders of Joe and Angela Blount and Michael Columbus, please call the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tipline at (888) 283-8477.You can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at gonecold.com For Gone Cold merch, visit gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
