Scott Carter is our guest on this episode. He is the coordinator of the office for the Beatification of Venerable Fr. Emil Kapaun. Fr. Kapaun is one of the newest deceased persons to be declared Venerable by the late Pope Francis in February 2025, which is a step closer to being declared a saint in the Catholic Church. Fr. Kapaun is best known for his faith-filled and heroic participation in the Korean war. Scott tells us about the young Emil's penchant for being an outdoorsman at a young age and his love for sports while he was in the seminary. Fr. Kapaun was ordained on June 9, 1949, and was assigned to a parish in Kansas. Fr. Kapaun's real calling was to minister to and serve soldiers in the war. He served as a chaplain in World War II and returned to the States when the war ended. In 1949 the Army put out a letter requesting chaplains for the Korean War and Fr. Kapaun told his bishop that he wanted to go. Scott says that Fr. Kapaun had a missionary spirit. There is an iconic picture of Fr. Kapaun celebrating Mass on the hood of a jeep. While in the Korean War, Fr. Kapaun was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Medal of Honor for saving a soldier about to be shot. Eventually Fr. Kapaun was captured and sent to a prison camp. While in the prison camp, Fr. Kapaun did everything he could to help his fellow prisoners maintain their dignity while encouraging those that wanted to give up. While his captors took Fr. Kapaun to his death, he asked forgiveness for any wrong he might have done to any one of them. Throughout his life and at the hour of his death, Fr. Kapaun put his faith into action. Miraculously, Fr. Kapaun's remains were found many years after his death in Korea and were returned to Kansas where he is buried at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. Scott ends the podcast by recalling a reflection given by Fr. Kapaun on the radio in Tokyo in April of 1950 on the Beatitude found in Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers…” Scott asks anyone who is praying for the intercession of Fr. Episode 89 - This week we put a bow on our month in Korea exploring various genres. Our final film is The Good, The Bad and the Weird (2008) which is a western set in Manchuria in the 1940's. It is an interesting film which is a parody/riff on The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, where a mix of Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters are all going after a map that allegedly leads to buried treasure. Speak (https://speak.com) may not be very well known to native English speakers, but they have come from a slow start in 2016 to emerge as one of the favorite partners of OpenAI, with their Startup Fund leading and joining their Series B and C as one of the new AI-native unicorns, noting that “Speak has the potential to revolutionize not just language learning, but education broadly”. Today we speak with Speak's CTO, Andrew Hsu, on the journey of building the “3rd generation” of language learning software (with Rosetta Stone being Gen 1, and Duolingo being Gen 2). Speak's premise is that speech and language models can now do what was previously only possible with human tutors—provide fluent, responsive, and adaptive instruction—and this belief has shaped its product and company strategy since its early days. https://www.linkedin.com/in/adhsu/ https://speak.com One of the most interesting strategic decisions discussed in the episode is Speak's early focus on South Korea. While counterintuitive for a San Francisco-based startup, the decision was influenced by a combination of market opportunity and founder proximity via a Korean first employee. South Korea's intense demand for English fluency and a highly competitive education market made it a proving ground for a deeply AI-native product. By succeeding in a market saturated with human-based education solutions, Speak validated its model and built strong product-market fit before expanding to other Asian markets and eventually, globally. The arrival of Whisper and GPT-based LLMs in 2022 marked a turning point for Speak. Suddenly, capabilities that were once theoretical—real-time feedback, semantic understanding, conversational memory—became technically feasible. Speak didn't pivot, but rather evolved into its second phase: from a supplemental practice tool to a full-featured language tutor. This transition required significant engineering work, including building custom ASR models, managing latency, and integrating real-time APIs for interactive lessons. It also unlocked the possibility of developing voice-first, immersive roleplay experiences and a roadmap to real-time conversational fluency. To scale globally and support many languages, Speak is investing heavily in AI-generated curriculum and content. Instead of manually scripting all lessons, they are building agents and pipelines that can scaffold curriculum, generate lesson content, and adapt pedagogically to the learner. This ties into one of Speak's most ambitious goals: creating a knowledge graph that captures what a learner knows and can do in a target language, and then adapting the course path accordingly. This level-adjusting tutor model aims to personalize learning at scale and could eventually be applied beyond language learning to any educational domain. Finally, the conversation touches on the broader implications of AI-powered education and the slow real-world adoption of transformative AI technologies. Despite the capabilities of GPT-4 and others, most people's daily lives haven't changed dramatically. Summer is in full swing, and with summer for academics comes the typical question, “Do you have summers off?” I can't speak for all academics, but summers don't mean the lack of work, but the shifting of work. We go from our primary focus being on teaching and into other pursuits that we don't have time for during the school year. Typically that means research and writing.  For me, it is no different. I've been doing a lot of writing, working on the Experience by Design book and making some progress. Of course, I think that everything I am writing is terrible. At some point soon you can be judge at how bad or good it is. But rather than thinking of “bad' or “good”, I'm thinking more in terms of “done” or “not done.” And “done” is better.Another part of my summer is doing this podcast. When this was started over 6 years ago, the biggest challenge was getting people who wanted to chat about their work. Then gradually PR firms would contact me about their clients who could appear on the show. Now, getting guests is no longer the hardest part. Rather, it is getting the episodes out to keep up with the number of conversations that I'm having. This means that I'm going to try to go to launching an episode a week. This is no small feat given that this is a one-person operation. Communicating with guests, having an introductory conversation, recording the conversation, recording intros and outros, audio engineering, loading it up, updating the website, creating promotional materials. All of it is me. That's a lot of work.The biggest payoff is the conversations that I get to have with the people who appear. I think about how I would have never have learned as much as I have and made the connection that I have if it wasn't for the podcast. And that's pretty cool. And makes the work worth it.My guest today has been part of many different design projects, including the Most Important Conversation Initiative. Chad Lefevre and I were once neighbors, me living in Detroit and he being born in Windsor. Has since traveled the world doing design work. From the United Way in Calgary (we also have in common that we worked for United Way) to working with thought leaders at Design Shop to tackle society's most complex problems (like peace in the Korean peninsula), he's covered a lot of ground. We do likewise in our conversation. Along with those topics, we look at the impact of AI on society and the workforce, and how we need to design a new way of being. We talk about how we are entering the Creative Economy, and how creativity is the new currency. We talk about even though people are resistant to change, change is the only constant in life and this moment requires it. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian girl, kidnapped for two years, escapes A Pakistani Christian girl, who this month escaped the Muslim who kidnapped her, said he forcibly converted her to Islam and repeatedly sexually assaulted her as his so-called “wife,” reports Morning Star News. On the night of May 24, 2023, as her family slept, 14-year-old Muskan Liaqat was kidnapped at gunpoint from her home in Sheikhupura District, by Muhammad Adnan and his father Muhammad Arif. Muskan said, “They took me to their home, where they tortured me and forcibly took my thumb impressions on some papers. I was later told that I had become a Muslim and Adnan was my husband.” A member of the Salvation Army church, Muskan said she was treated as a sex slave. She said, “I was raped and beaten by Adnan … on almost a daily basis. As a result of repeated sexual abuse, I got pregnant in 2024.” Severe torture by Adnan resulted in a miscarriage in the fourth month of her pregnancy. She said, “I used to cry all night and prayed to God to rescue me from this hell, but it looked like my prayers were not reaching Him.” The trauma led her to attempt suicide by cutting her wrist. Judges routinely ignore evidence related to the children's ages, handing them back to kidnappers as their “legal wives.” Thankfully, she got away and is now in a safe house. According to Open Doors, Pakistan, which is 96% Muslim, is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. South Korean doctor charged with murder after full-term abortion On July 2nd, a South Korean doctor was arrested and charged with murder following the abortion of a full-term baby last year, reigniting national debate over the country's ambiguous abortion laws and medical ethics, reports LifeSiteNews.com. On June 28, Judge Park Jeong-ho of the Seoul Central District Court approved arrest warrants for the surgeon, identified as Shim, and the facility's director, “Yoon.” Authorities allege the child was born alive and then deliberately left to die, which they say amounts to murder through “willful neglect.” The case dates back to late 2024. Evidence suggests that the baby was alive both before and after the procedure. The abortion was allegedly committed via labor induction – a method that, if resulting in a live birth followed by intentional death, could meet the legal definition of murder under Korean law. The Korean Medical Association condemned the incident, stating: “A fetus at 36 weeks is a baby who could survive well if born, and terminating a pregnancy at this stage is tantamount to murder.” Psalm 139:13-14 says, “For You [God] created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Trump's Big Beautiful Bill defunded Planned Parenthood Trump's “Big Beautiful Bill,” which he signed into law on Friday, July 4th, defunded Planned Parenthood for a year, reports LifeNews.com. The defunding provision, outlined in Section 44126 of the bill, effectively terminates Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services, closing a loophole that has allowed the organization to access federal funds despite the Hyde Amendment's ban on direct taxpayer funding for abortions. Pro-life critics have argued that those Medicaid reimbursements indirectly paid for the abortion giant to kill more babies by abortion. It is the first time that the radical Planned Parenthood abortion business has been defunded. The vote, as we reported on Friday, was 218-214. The new law will redirect hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to community-based, pro-life healthcare providers and away from Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion. Planned Parenthood, which kills over 400,000 babies in abortions annually, received $700 million in taxpayer funds last fiscal year. Death toll in Texas flash floods climbs to 79, 40 remain missing At least 70 people are dead in central Texas after devastating flash floods slammed the Texas Hill Country, with water rescues taking place along the Guadalupe River, which rose rapidly early Friday morning to the height of a two-story building, reports CBS News. (Watch this video to see the rushing water in Center Point, Texas which tears down trees and threatens a bridge.) A dozen are still missing from Camp Mystic in Kerr County, a children's Christian summer camp. 13-year-old Stella Thompson, a camper who survived, talked with the Dallas NBC affiliate. THOMPSON: “You'd see kayaks in trees. It was horrific, because we had no idea. First responders in the water. There were huge trees ripped out of the ground.” Tragically, in a last act of kindness, Richard Eastland, the director of Camp Mystic, died trying to save campers as floodwaters from the Guadalupe River overwhelmed the camp, which is on the banks of the river, reports the San Antonio Express-News. More than 750 girls were at the camp when the flooding struck. The dead include 38 adults and 21 children, with 18 of the adults and four of the children unidentified.  Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott spoke from the heart. ABBOTT: “When Texans face a challenge, we come together, we unite. We will be relentless in going after and ensuring that we locate every single person who's been a victim of this flooding event. We're not going to stop today or tomorrow. We will stop when the job is completed. This is a 24/7 operation, day and night. A 22-year-old woman, who was carried by the raging waters 20 miles from Hunt, Texas to Center Point, survived as she clung to a tree. Carl, who lives along the Guadalupe River, explained what happened to KENS-TV 5. CARL: “True miracle. There's no other way to explain it. “I came up on the deck and she saw me. So, she started to scream out loud. I thought she was in the water going down the river. I finally looked and was able to spot her in the tree. I began to holler back to her. ‘Hey, I see you. We'll get you help. Hang on. Hang on.' Because she was desperate! “After they were able to pluck her out, we brought her into our house and gave her a shower, clothed her because it had stripped all of her clothing off, gave her something to drink, gave her a nap. We called her grandmother in Corpus.” Thankfully, she had no broken bones and only a small wound on the top of her head.
