Talkhouse Podcast
Barry Johnson (Joyce Manor) with Greg Mendez

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a couple of friends who swim in the same punk-inspired scenes but whose musics are pretty different: Barry Johnson and Greg Mendez. Johnson is the singer and guitarist for Joyce Manor, the pop-punk/emo/indie-rock/something-something band that's been blasting out short, to-the-point songs for nearly two decades. There's something perfectly economical about everything the band does: Their records often clock in at under 20 minutes, so there's no fat or filler to be found. The latest is being hailed as their best, which is saying something for a band whose chosen genre rarely seems to age well—something Johnson laughs about in this chat. The album is called I Used to Go to This Bar, and it was produced by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz. Check out the song “I Know Where Mark Chen Lives” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Greg Mendez, takes a Spartan approach to songwriting as well, but his songs are much more quiet and reflective—you'll definitely hear Elliott Smith vibes on his new album, Beauty Land. Mendez has actually been making music nearly as long as Joyce Manor, but their shyness didn't really push through into wider view until a self-titled album in 2023. Now he's ready to take the next leap—this new record is on the Dead Oceans label, which has released records by like-minded souls Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, and Bright Eyes. Check out the song “Gentle Love” from Beauty Land right here. In this conversation, Mendez and Johnson talk about how they first met, about the ups and downs of sequencing an album, and about doing the stream-of-consciousness creative practice called “morning pages,” where you just write whatever pops into your head. Johnson doesn't want you to see his pages, and you'll find out why. Enjoy. 0:00 — Intro 2:47 — Start of Conversation 5:16 — On sequencing records 7:58 — On releasing new music and planning modern album rollouts 9:20 — On the benefits of slower rollouts and appreciating singles 10:58 — On how they became friends 13:52 — On living in New York, and midlife crises 15:42 — On surfing, skating, and Long Beach 19:50 — On discovering punk through skating culture 20:28 — On touring's impact on creativity, and finding inspiration from other musicians 23:08 — On overcoming writer's block, exercising your creativity with age, “morning pages,” and Kurt Cobain's diary 32:21 — On upcoming tour plans and keeping audiences' attention while playing solo 34:14 — On seeing musicians transfix an audience, getting emotional at concerts, and live versions of songs Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Barry Johnson and Greg Mendez for a great chat. BEST OF HACKING THE AFTERLIFE These are excerpts from a number of podcasts - with conversations with people offstage about how things work.  Charles Grodin, Robert Towne, Phil Hartman, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix stop by briefly Prince stops by, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Hawking, Robin Williams, and two animals stop by - Hira, the dog and companion of screenwriter Robert Towne, and Mr. Bailey, the companion and pet of Luana Anders. Both have insight into how animals incarnate, how consciousness functions.  It's a free wheeling discuss with lots of different concepts flying around.  Someone requested us doing a conversation with animals - and out of the many podcasts, conversations where animals showed, up, these were a few with a dog I knew (Hira) and walked for 3 years for my boss Robert Towne.. Hira showed up during a session we did with Robert. He was a skeptic until I asked Hira to tell Robert something I didn't know, that only he could remember. Jennifer said he was showing her challenging a buffalo on Catalina. Something only Robert could have known. Luana is our moderator on the flipside, and is responsible for teaming me and Jennifer up - and also was close friends with any number of people who show up (Charles Grodin, etc).   It's hard to characterize this as anything but an extended conversation about how consciousness functions or incarnation works. Enjoy.

Welcome back to another lively and unpredictable episode of Vision Cast! Hosted by George, Angela (now formally embracing the name Rachel James), and Preston, this episode is packed with personal milestones, exciting new tech ventures, and a deep dive into holistic energy healing. The cast is joined by a vibrant panel of fan-favorite recurring co-hosts, including "Delectable" Donald, "Vivacious"Veronica, "Rockin'" Rita, "Farting" Phil, and JC (aka the "Juggleu Man").The show kicks off with a round of warm welcomes and a few major personal announcements. Angela takes the floor to share a significant life update: she is in the process of legally changing her name. After years of feeling disconnected from her birth name, she has found peace with the name Rachel, officially announcing that she will now go by Angela Rachel James. Alongside her name change, she shares a tech update, revealing that after a frustrating battle with a malfunctioning Google Pixel, she has officially rejoined the Apple ecosystem with an iPhone 13.The tech talk continues as Donald excitedly unveils his latest passion project: the AI Radio Network. Distinct from his other ventures, this new platform streams exclusively AI-generated music across a wide variety of genres, from smooth jazz and country to R&B and mashups. Because the music is entirely AI-generated, it bypasses copyright restrictions, allowing listeners to submit their own AI tracks to be featured on the stream. Our beloved Rita geeks out over her HumanWare Braille e-reader, sharing how she downloads and reads books and magazines in Braille, specifically highlighting a Kurt Cobain biography she is currently reading. The centerpiece of the episode shifts to a more spiritual and holistic realm when "Vivacious" Veronica leads a fascinating demonstration on energy healing using tuning forks. Veronica explains how she uses the metallic instruments to clear negative energy, remove bad attachments, and harmonize the body's frequencies. She treats the listeners to a live audio demonstration, striking the tuning forks so the audience can hear the resonant, high-frequency chiming. The hosts are visibly (and audibly) relaxed by the sound, noting how the tone changes as the negative energy is "cleansed." Veronica also briefly touches upon her use of crystals, Reiki, and Tarot, painting a vivid picture of her holistic practices. As the episode winds down, the hosts share a rapid-fire round of life updates. JC announces an exciting three-month summer getaway to the beautiful islands of Puerto Rico. Preston shares that he is settling into a new apartment, marking a fresh chapter in his life. The group also navigates the usual, hilarious hiccups of a live show — from rogue screen readers suddenly reading out text, to brief power outages, and accidental mutings. Throughout it all, the camaraderie, laughter, and genuine friendship among the Vision Cast crew shine brightly, making for a heartwarming and highly entertaining broadcast.

Although Frances Farmer was a star of Hollywood's “Golden Era” and an intellectual powerhouse in her own right, her achievements have been overshadowed by myths surrounding her public struggles with mental health. Her periods in psychiatric hospitals and involuntary confinement have entered pop culture lore, immortalized by everyone from Jessica Lange to Kurt Cobain. In the first of two parts, Lena and Alissa consider Frances's early rebellious years, her ascent to fame, and the relationships that shaped her burgeoning career.  This episode was first published on 06/10/2021. Melissa Auf der Maur's new memoir, Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A '90s Rock Memoir(DaCapo, 2026) is a remarkably open-hearted, clear-eyed memoir of the '90s Alternative era by the bassist of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins Even the Good Girls Will Cry begins with Auf der Maur's bohemian upbringing in Montreal, where her early, deep connection to art and music gave her entry to the colorful and thriving local creative scene. Working as a cassette DJ and ticket girl, she would see (and sometimes meet) the luminaries who'd pass through town--Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Pavement, Sonic Youth. Thanks to a thrown beer bottle and a long-shot fan letter to a PO Box, her band Tinker scored a life-changing opening slot for The Smashing Pumpkins and, sensing her natural talent on bass, Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love, just one of the many uncanny threads that weaves destiny throughout this riveting memoir. Whisked from her local scene and thrust into the eye of a hurricane of grief on a global stage, Melissa joined Hole for the band's 1994 Live Through This world tour just after the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Hole's prior bassist, Kristen Pfaff, with Courtney Love at the center of it all. It was a tour of passionate intensity, as a chaotic yet stunningly powerful band constantly threatened to spin out of control. Melissa brings the reader with raging intimacy into the action, offering a heroic portrait of the unforgettable Courtney Love as she howled into the darkness as if to keep grief at bay. That was only the beginning of Melissa's journey through alternative rock. Part rock memoir, part travel diary, part psychedelic scrapbook, Even the Good Girls Will Cry is a behind-the-scenes rock 'n' roll memoir with a soulful intimacy and mystic undertone that sets it apart from memoirs by her peers. It is a vivid dispatch from the last analog decade, artistically capturing that bygone era in all its messy, angsty glory. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 990 – At first glance, he reminds you of Dennis Gardeck, maybe even Pat Tillman (or Kurt Cobain, according to Paul Calvisi.) Watch him play, and yeah, the Gardeck similarities continue. Hear him speak, and you feel like you're talking to Budda Baker in terms of how he describes his style of play. In other words, new safety Andrew Wingard, before even playing a down of football in a Cardinals uniform, is trending towards being a fan favorite. Recently, Wingard sat down with Calvisi and Craig Grialou to discuss why he chose Arizona after seven seasons in Jacksonville, why going undrafted might've been the best thing to happen to him, and why he plays like he plays.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Iranian state television has broadcast a message in the name of the newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The message was read by an announcer and gave no clue as to the state of the leader's health. Some reports say he was injured on the first day of US and Israeli attacks. In the message, he said Iran would avenge the blood of its martyrs, and continue to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which one fifth of the world's oil passes. We hear from people in Iran, many of whom say they are now living in constant fear. We also report from the US, where public approval for the war with Iran is the lowest at the start of any conflict since the Second World War, with around 41% agreeing with the US decision to attack Iran. In other news, a court in Russia has given life sentences to four men convicted of carrying out one of the worst terrorist attacks of recent years - the mass shooting at a concert hall outside Moscow. Also: an auction of a remarkable collection of legendary guitars - including Kurt Cobain's trademark 1969 Lake Placid blue Fender Mustang and other famous musical instruments, literary artefacts and sporting and film memorabilia - which belonged to the late billionaire American businessman, Jim Irsay. The Global News Podcast brings you the breaking news you need to hear, as it happens.
