On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a couple of friends who swim in the same punk-inspired scenes but whose musics are pretty different: Barry Johnson and Greg Mendez. Johnson is the singer and guitarist for Joyce Manor, the pop-punk/emo/indie-rock/something-something band that's been blasting out short, to-the-point songs for nearly two decades. There's something perfectly economical about everything the band does: Their records often clock in at under 20 minutes, so there's no fat or filler to be found. The latest is being hailed as their best, which is saying something for a band whose chosen genre rarely seems to age well—something Johnson laughs about in this chat. The album is called I Used to Go to This Bar, and it was produced by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz. Check out the song “I Know Where Mark Chen Lives” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Greg Mendez, takes a Spartan approach to songwriting as well, but his songs are much more quiet and reflective—you'll definitely hear Elliott Smith vibes on his new album, Beauty Land. Mendez has actually been making music nearly as long as Joyce Manor, but their shyness didn't really push through into wider view until a self-titled album in 2023. Now he's ready to take the next leap—this new record is on the Dead Oceans label, which has released records by like-minded souls Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, and Bright Eyes. On the 76th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author Greg Prato review the 1991 all time classic grunge album by Nirvana, "Nevermind." Nevermind changed everything. Music, fashion, pop culture and Nirvana lead singer, guitar player and songwriter, Kurt Cobain became the voice of a generation. The band included underrated bassist Krist Novoselic and new hard hitting drummer and future leader of the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl. Nevermind was Nirvana's 2nd studio album was produced by Butch Vig. It made it to #1 on Billboard album charts and eventually went 13 times platinum and sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. The album broke the grunge movement and was partially responsible for killing "hair metal." The album has been awarded numerous accolades and along with its first single and video, which is the poster child for the 1990's and grunge, "Smells Like Teen Spirit. This was the Tom's pick. Melissa Auf der Maur is an acclaimed musician, photographer, curator, and producer, best known as the former bassist of rock bands Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. Her new memoir Even the Good Girls Will Cry covers those heady rockstar times of the 1990s, and is out now. She has also released two solo albums, Auf der Maur (2004) and Out of Our Minds (2010), the latter of which is part of a larger project that also includes a comic book and a short film. Melissa's photographs have been exhibited internationally, including at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and have appeared in such publications as Spin, Elle, Nylon, and American Photo. Iranian state television has broadcast a message in the name of the newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The message was read by an announcer and gave no clue as to the state of the leader's health. Some reports say he was injured on the first day of US and Israeli attacks.
