When his family bought their bargain fixer-upper, they thought the only work ahead was cosmetic. But the house had a darker history, whispered by neighbors and hinted at by the local fire department: a mysterious blaze in the '80s, a man trapped inside, and a black candle that survived untouched. As renovations began, hidden rooms, cold blasts of air, and shadowy figures emerged. Over the years, the strange activity escalated—doors locking and unlocking on their own, children lured by something only they could see, and guests spotting strangers who vanished in an instant. What exactly was waiting for them in those walls… and did it ever really leave? Navigate the midnight hours of life and faith with profound wisdom from author Aubrey Sampson, Enneagram 4 (4-7 pairing), as we discover what we actually find in spiritual darkness through Aubrey's soul-wrenching journey of losing her best friend Jen and encountering the "dark night of the soul." Learn why spiritual dryness isn't failure but invitation, how to support others through their darkest seasons without trying to fix them, and why some of our most profound encounters with God happen when He feels most absent. Aubrey offers honest hope for anyone walking through grief, spiritual darkness, or seasons when faith feels impossible - showing how the midnight hours can become places of sacred encounter rather than spiritual failure. Based on her book "What We Find in the Dark," this conversation provides hard-won wisdom for finding God's presence in the very places where He seems most hidden. Watch on YouTube! Send us a textPodcast Title: Breaking Bread Together – A Simple, Accessible Communion Devotional from London, EnglandScripture Focus: Luke 22:19–20, 1 Corinthians 11:23–26, John 6:53–58, Hebrews 10:19–22Welcome to the Daily Christian Prayer Podcast with Reverend Ben Cooper, broadcasting from London, England, and connecting believers worldwide through RB Christian Radio. In this powerful five-minute devotional episode, we explore the sacred practice of communion at home—breaking bread and sharing the cup in a simple, heartfelt way that strips away unnecessary religious barriers.Have you ever felt unworthy of taking communion? Or perhaps church traditions and religious authorities have made this profound act feel distant or inaccessible. Today, Reverend Ben Cooper dismantles these walls with a straightforward and loving invitation to reconnect with the heart of what Jesus commanded when He said, “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). Communion isn't about perfect settings or elaborate rituals—it's about remembering Christ's sacrifice and celebrating His redemptive work.Reverend Cooper guides listeners through an intimate, unedited communion experience direct from his London studio. He gently reminds us that “it's just bread, it's just grape juice, but it's what it symbolizes that holds the true power.” This devotional emphasises that the elements themselves are simple, yet profoundly symbolic—the bread representing Jesus' broken body, the cup His blood poured out for redemption (1 Corinthians 11:24–25).One of the most powerful moments in this episode is addressing the common feeling of unworthiness: “Maybe there is something telling you that you're not worthy. That is a lie,” Ben assures. “You are worthy because of Him.” This truth liberates listeners from the religious gatekeeping that has prevented many from embracing the blessing of communion. The episode is a beautiful balance of respect for the sacred symbolism while fostering a spirit of accessibility and grace.Whether it's been days or months since you last took communion, this devotional creates space for genuine spiritual connection. Thousands worldwide are joining in breaking bread at home, work, or anywhere life finds them—reclaiming communion as a daily Christian practice of faith, remembrance, and unity.Support This Listener-Funded Ministry The Daily Christian Prayer Podcast is free but not free to produce. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 408The Saint of the day is Dedication of Saint Mary Major BasilicaThe Story of the Dedication of Saint Mary Major Basilica First raised at the order of Pope Liberius in the mid-fourth century, the Liberian basilica was rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III shortly after the Council of Ephesus affirmed Mary's title as Mother of God in 431. Rededicated at that time to the Mother of God, St. Mary Major is the largest church in the world honoring God through Mary. Standing atop one of Rome's seven hills, the Esquiline, it has survived many restorations without losing its character as an early Roman basilica. Its interior retains three naves divided by colonnades in the style of Constantine's era. Fifth-century mosaics on its walls testify to its antiquity. St. Mary Major is one of the four Roman basilicas known as patriarchal churches in memory of the first centers of the Church. St. John Lateran represents Rome, the See of Peter; St. Paul Outside the Walls, the See of Alexandria, allegedly the see presided over by Mark; St. Peter's, the See of Constantinople; and St. Mary's, the See of Antioch, where Mary is supposed to have spent most of her later life. One legend, unreported before the year 1000, gives another name to this feast: Our Lady of the Snows. According to that story, a wealthy Roman couple pledged their fortune to the Mother of God. In affirmation, she produced a miraculous summer snowfall and told them to build a church on the site. The legend was long celebrated by releasing a shower of white rose petals from the basilica's dome every August 5. Reflection Theological debate over Christ's nature as God and man reached fever pitch in Constantinople in the early fifth century. The chaplain of Bishop Nestorius began preaching against the title Theotokos, “Mother of God,” insisting that the Virgin was mother only of the human Jesus. Nestorius agreed, decreeing that Mary would henceforth be named “Mother of Christ” in his see. The people of Constantinople virtually revolted against their bishop's refutation of a cherished belief. When the Council of Ephesus refuted Nestorius, believers took to the streets, enthusiastically chanting, “Theotokos! Theotokos!” Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 5, the Catholic Church celebrates the Optional Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four most illustrious churches of Rome, along with St. John Lateran, St. Peter, and St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Christendom's first Marian shrine for pilgrims. This feast commemorates a miracle of the snowfall that occurred during the night on this day in the year 358 on the site where the Basilica of St. Mary Major now stands. The Virgin Mary had appeared in a dream to two faithful Roman Christians, the patrician John and his wife, as well as to Pope Liberius (352-366), asking that a church be built in her honor on the site where snow would fall on the night between August 4th and 5th.That's why another name for the basilica is Our Lady of the Snow, Saint Mary of the Snow, and the feast of today is Our Lady of Snows, la Virgen Blanca, in Spanish.Nowadays, in Rome, during the pontifical Mass and the second vespers, the traditional shower of flower petals descends from the ceiling of the basilica to commemorate the August snowfall in 358.Pope Francis' mortal remains are buried in St. Mary Major. He was laid to rest near the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Every home has a purpose. Satan wants to destroy that purpose, and God wants to restore what's already been destroyed. No matter what you're walking through, no matter what you're dealing with, no matter what season of life your family and your home is in right now, God sees you, God loves you, and He wants you to win. We were created in the image of God to reflect His glory and His attributes. Our homes are meant to be a reflection of who God is, so that others become curious and we can point them to Jesus. Whether you're in a season of victory or feel like your home is falling apart, God wants to continue growing what is already going good and revive what may seem dead. Satan's tactic is to question the truth of God and to compromise the truth of God. The enemy wants to plant seeds of doubt and drive a wedge between us and God. But God has made a career of mending broken things. He calls us to stop hiding, to take a step toward Him, and to allow Him to fix what we have wrecked. God wants to clothe you in His love through His Son, Jesus, and He wants you to trust Him with the broken pieces. Take a step towards God. In 2016, Anand Pandian was alarmed by Donald Trump's harsh attacks on immigrants to the United States, the appeal of that politics of anger and fear. In the years that followed, he crisscrossed the country—from Fargo, North Dakota to Denton, Texas, from southern California to upstate New York—seeking out fellow Americans with markedly different social and political commitments, trying to understand the forces that have hardened our suspicions of others. The result is Something Between Us: The Everyday Walls of American Life (Stanford University Press, 2025), and How to Take Them Down, a groundbreaking and ultimately hopeful exploration of the ruptures in our social fabric, and courageous efforts to rebuild a collective life beyond them. The stakes of disconnection have never been higher. From the plight of migrants and refugees to the climate crisis and the recent pandemic, so much turns on the care and concern we can muster for lives and circumstances beyond our own. But as Pandian discovers, such empathy is often thwarted by the infrastructure of everyday American life: fortified homes and neighborhoods, bulked-up cars and trucks, visions of the body as an armored fortress, and media that shut out contrary views. Home and road, body and mind: these interlocking walls sharpen the divide between insiders and outsiders, making it difficult to take unfamiliar people and perspectives seriously, to acknowledge the needs of others and relate to their struggles. Through vivid encounters with Americans of many kinds—including salesmen, truck drivers, police officers, urban planners, and activists for women's rights and environmental justice—Pandian shares tools to think beyond the twists and turns of our bracing present. While our impasses draw from deep American histories of isolation and segregation, he reveals how strategies of mutual aid and communal caretaking can help to surface more radical visions for a life in common with others, ways of meeting strangers in this land as potential kin. Anand Pandian is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University. Lilian Calles Barger is a cultural, intellectual and gender historian. Her most recent book is entitled The World Come of Age: An Intellectual History of Liberation Theology (Oxford University Press, 2018). Learn more about your ad choices.
